Excellent range of features. Sturdy, well built and will take the rough and tumble of life on out doors. IP rating and water safety features means you don’t have to take care of them as you would your phone. Keys tones and squelch can be switched off to make for a less jarring experience in quieter situations. Battery life is good, but recharge is slow so plug them in regularly. First full charge was surprising long. Leave them plugged as soon as they arrive and wait, perhaps 24 hours or more! Would recommend
We used this in cars following each other but we didnt get the distance, which in fairness may be because a car is a bit of a Farraday cage so may have limited the range. Also took ages to charge but not sure why.. Sound quality was okay. Good build quality and if you are using this within 1-2 Km its probably more than fine.
A pretty good radio, range isn’t as good as my friend’s cheap Baofeng’s but it was trying to transmit through several concrete walls and structural steel so should be good for most uses.
Weatherproofing seems to work well, certainly gives piece of mind when it starts raining while I’m working.
Takes quite a while to charge: Have to leave them on overnight plugged into the kitchen usb outlets.
Important note: If you leave them in a cold place overnight then go to use them you may find the speakers to be very quiet. Just open the weatherproof seal on the charging port and it will release the air pressure and return the volume to normal.
Brought these to a music festival because phones rarely work and they were fantastic. Great range and Batteries lasted 2 days of solid use. Easily got 3-4Km range from campsite to main arena
Does what you would expect. Easy to use and solid build quality.
They float well and the light does light up when in water.
The charger seems to take a day or so to bring them up to what I think is full charge.
Would recommend. Tested in the middle of London and the range was almost a mile with lots of buildings and stuff in the way.
We (family of 7) went to Portugal last summer for holidays. We has 2 rental cars and this 20way walkie talkie became very handy for communicating between the 2 cars. Excellent battery life and super clear sound.
Easy to use and great looking. Need to get the microphone very close to the mouth and speak loudly to be heard. Battery life is so so, and it takes several hours to charge.
Brought these for my 4 year old son. He is into more grown up things and these were just great for him. They sound great and are easy for him to use. They look great and the battery life is good. They are also just the right size. Great item.
I bought this for an 8 yr old, and they are a great hit, so sturdy and easy to use. I’m sure they are meant for serious work, but being waterproof is a great bonus for kids.
They have linked them to the different set the neighbours have so 4 boys have great fu
The distance quoted is obviously less in built up areas, but pretty good in the countryside. The only thing that I disliked, was that I asked the seller a question regarding the items and didn’t receive any response.
We used these in the lake district without any issues, even from 5 miles away hill to ground. Like any radio that has low output power, these won’t punch through dense objects or hills. They are waterproof, robust and well made. Battery life could be worked on by using Lithiums, but you can recharge the supplied batteries by USB very easily, and if you run out you can use AA’s. Very pleased with the purchase, they do exactly what they said they would, and they are miles and miles ahead of the cheap ones you find on Amazon. I have dropped them, got them wet, and they have always worked. Ok so they colour, yes I am not a fan I would have preferred at least an option other than yellow. Great purchase.
A bit chunky but feel very well made. I have had them clipped to a buoyancy aid while paddle boarding and they work beautifully. They have been submerged for extended periods while swimming also and all good.
Only pain is the flashing light when exposed to water. If this could be switched off they would be perfect.
Range is well over 3 miles and the battery life seems to be for ever. I’ve used them for hours and still don’t need charged.
Well worth the money if you are looking for a robust pm
good overall, but one of the pair of batteries only charges to two bars and not three bars like the other one.
it is clearly faulty, but i wasnt ready to use them straight away which meant i couldn’t return them/it by the time i realised.
in summary, check both batteries charge fully as soon as you receive the item.
The radios were delivered on time. It was easy to put the batteries in and they were fully charged. They were given to my grandson as a present he is pleased with them. He has not had them long enough to comment on use and battery life.
I brought these to use whilst sailing, much easier than shouting from one end of the boat to the other. On the whole they are good consumer grade radios, but for my use their are a couple of downsides.
Pros:
USB charging
Floats
Cons:
Not loud enough, volume only goes to 7, but at that level it is difficult to hear above a boat engine
No longer waterproof if you plugin a speaker mic or headset in
Mic connection is on top, so if you lean forward, the cord pulls out
Expect I will end up replacing these with some commercial grade radios.
Bought these as a present for my little brother who lives in another house a whole town away as a ‘cool’ way to talk to him. I was skeptical it was going to make the distance (2.82km as the crow flies) over the valley, woods, and buildings that separated our towns but to my pleasant surprise, it did! As long as he was outside and I was sat by my window his voice transmitted almost crystal clear! I am very impressed, to say the least. The only downside to these walkie talkies is the battery life. Sometimes the batteries last for what seems forever, however, sometimes they also died when the batteries were half full. Standard AA batteries also seem to last longer than the ones provided. It might be worth buying other rechargeable AA batteries and using them instead.
Water and bump proof. Floatible and no scary noise at the end of transmission. What not to like? 🙂
When used with comercial PMR rafios the latter one were making annoying RF/FM noise at the end of every transmission (not a roger beep). T92 are not making such noise when transmitting to other T92 or commercial PMR (tested with Motorola XT660D and Kenwood 3601). Interesting that both commercial models are making this noise when transmitting to T92 but not when transmitting to other commercial PMR (xt660d to 3601 or 3601 to xt660d).
Back to Motorola T92: really nice sound quality, dropping it on concrete shouldn’t damage it. No range problems in whole our house and garden. Not yet tested outside due to C19 lockdown.
Son loves it and so we do. Highly recommended!
Some advantages over comercial PMRs (Motorola XT etc.):
– you can use alkaline or rechargeable AA batteries (ie. if provided battery packet died)
– you don’t need to carry additional charger – it’s charged via standard small usb connection so you can use whatever charger or power bank you have (although xt660d have usb psu but still you need to tske its desktop charger)
– better waterproof class than xt660d
If you look PMR only for business or home (no trips, hiking, playing with children etc) then you may consider commercial XT series:
– desktop charger
– Li-Ion battery
– digital PMR mode (lower sound quality but on higher distance it is eliminating annoing loud noise)
– more things programmable via PC software but usually less on device itself
– Kenwood 3601 is much more smaller and lighter so easy can be carried in pocket while T92 and XT are rather on rugged big and bulky side.
grips of T92:
– not too sensitive vox – not enough to monitor small baby if some wanders
– I’d prefer to see more VOX sensitivity levels ie. 10 instead of just 3
– big size
– no desktop charger
FYI: original Motorola earpiece works fine. other no-name one was disconnecting itself way to often, so if you experience similar problem look for orginal earpiece
Warning: if you decide to use different batteries – check if they are still floating before you assume so (as per instruction on battery compartment lid)
The models that I received this weekend (April 2020) are 16 channels (the front grill is also slightly different to the picture).
They came with 8 channels enabled but there’s a simple procedure explained in the user manual to enable channels 9-16). Press MENU then press and hold + and – at the same time for 3 seconds and “16CH” will be displayed. You’ve then got channels 1 – 16 (plus the 121 ‘privacy codes’ per channel) to choose from in the menu.
Don’t usually review something like this so quickly but a weekend of playing with these around the house and in the woods has impressed me.
Not exactly tested the range at all yet but the battery life seems good, they’re very robust and will stand up to a few knocks and scrapes which is great if a small child is going to be playing with them.
The menu system is very easy to navigate and intuitive, no real need for the instruction manual.
Perhaps by modern walkie talkie standard they’re a little chunky (and heavy) but they are obviously waterproof, so understandable.
I bought 2 sets of these for use when sailing in the scout group and they work great.
We have on a few occasions unwillingly testing their waterproof status and they they are waterproof, they also float with a flashing light.
disappointingly though when the radio does get wet the speaker can temporarily fail and needs washing under the tap (i guess to get the salt water off) and then dried properly, if this isn’t done the sound out of the speaker is reduced to a whisper. the radios also don’t float with the light facing up, this is down to the weight being in the body and not the aerial but if floating it minimises the view.
Still happy though and when they next drop in price i will be getting some more for work
