So far receiving great internet in France. At home its just as fast if not better than my internet provider. Considering using full time. Im impressed
So I currently work away 5 days a week and stay in a Premier Inn, problem is I bring my gaming laptop to get by in the evenings and I have been limited to either my phone data (I have a 5g unlimited plan but get 5g very rarely) and then the ultimate WiFi which is 15 pound a week and is worse than my phone data, the ping is too high in both circumstances and it makes gaming impossible. I took a risk and thought I’d bite the bullet getting the night hawk m2.
So I decided to pay the extra as I’ve heard the m2 tends to get slightly faster down speeds vs the m1, now there was no point paying the big money for the newer versions as 5g in the UK is still too hit and miss for the most part.
Long story short I only get around 50 ping now and I can enjoy my evenings gaming. Even using it on the go when my phone has close to 0 data the nighthawk is giving me a fast connection.
FYI I’m with Vodafone on both my mobile and the m2 router.
Very recommended.
Bought this to replace a TP-Link 4G mobile router. Very pleased – huge jump in speed to 32 Mbps in a rural area with less than perfect coverage.
Lots of devices connected simultaneously with no drop in speed. You can remove the battery and keep it permanently plugged in.
Tried the router out in a place where I’d had absolutely no wifi reception prior to buying. Got a decent signal straight away and was able to spend the time working in my van while also enjoying the view!
I have to say I’ve been delighted with my MR5200 and use it extensively in my car. It gives me fast internet access when on the road. I’m a chauffeur and my passengers have used the device too. One had a video call on the road and there was not a single drop-out. Very happy to recommend it.
Great router, works very well, Its our main Internet access at home and we take it away in our caravan and its never failed. Easy to install, and configure. I would have preferred SMA connectors as opposed to the ts9, as the cables can drop out, but a minor grip. A lot of money, but a lot of router!
TBH not worth the money I was expecting to do amazing things. I’m using In my house for faster 5G Internet via external anntena managed to pull 200 MBS from it and 60 upload but still need time to set it up I find the wireless range not good. So I plan on using the LAN port to my gaming router with lots of range to solve the issue. Snap dragon is good but the idea of dumping my slow land line has gone out the window for now.
I use this device as a main internet source. I do not have a landline broadband connection. And I work from home as a data consultant, requiring a constant, fast internet connection for data analysis and online video meetings.
This is an excellent device paired with EE. I travelled around Europe (roaming) with this gaining excellent speed. At home in the Cambridge, UK, I often get over 100mbps download speed and over 30mbps upload speed.
I also have a Huawei 5G CPE Pro 2, which seems to be slower than this tiny unit on the 4G network; it was getting around 70-80mbps download and often struggled to go over 15mbps upload speed. Until 5G becomes available in my area, my life (ie., work) will depend on this tiny device. Highly recommended.
For a router for the RV it’s a crazy amount of money but it works really well. Easy to set up, rock solid in performance and good battery life. Heartily recommend if you can get past the hefty price tag!!!!
Great with an unlimited data card. Use it in the caravan. Expensive but much better than the Huwawii (?) one we have before. Use it for smart tv, phones, games, tablets
I bought this due to having issues with my home full fibre system, my partner works from home and sometimes needs to travel and this is perfect, it has never let us down yet, simple to set up and battery life is really good, I bought an external atrial to help with the signal at home but really I don’t need it as the unit is just as good without the external aerial.
This NETGEAR router is brilliant for on the go we got a pay as you go EE SIM card, battery life is very good, reception brilliant we got 5G using 4 devices at a time can’t not get 5G at home on phones so very pleased
Bought this to see if I could replace BT fttc. Have used it instead for 2 months and even with poor 5G and good 4G signal it gives me 60-120mbps. Used it for hundreds of zoom meetings, hours of Netflix, etc, and it’s been solid.
I have enough confidence to cancel my BT contract.
This router worked wonders will away as we did not receive any signal on our mobile phones, yes it could have been the networks we are on, but once we had a dedicated data SIM card we had no issues. Easy to use and link your devices. It is pricey but in this case you get what you pay for and may not suit everyone’s budget. Another bonus is it’s 5G ready as well
Purchased the M2 version when it was on offer for about the same price as the M1. I have put an unlimited EE data sim in which was easy to fit.
It gets really fast, circa 150mb download speeds and I connect up to 6 devices at a time, with at least 3 streaming video.
It could do with a more expensive feel and casing as it is a premium price. It could also have a better display, but overall, I still give this 5 stars.
I didn’t quite know what to expect but the place where we are staying in London has extremely slow internet so basically I couldn’t work as I need good up and down speeds. Based on reviews from other countries I gambled on this device. I bought a sim plan from Vodaphone with no limits on size of data or speed. Popped it in the unit, fired it up, went through some basic setup and immediately did a speed test with it just sitting on the kitchen table. Got well over 100 mbps Down and more importantly for me app. 40mbps Up. I haven’t tried to optimise anything as it’s fine as is but I’m sure if you are in a good coverage area you could do a lot better. The only downside I see is the price.
Now I’m no techie so my expertise in this area is limited, and I rely a lot on others knowledge and experiences… Now I suppose the one thing that is most striking is the price. I had to think long and hard before shelling out, but fortunately it came up on a Amazon Prime Day deal which made it easier to swallow…. As for the technical side of things I only have my hotspot phone to compare it with. I’ve watched countless YouTube videos on various routers and overall this came in as the router that ticked my boxes… We regularly travel away in our camper and this makes things easier for a start. The connectivity to our other devices is easy as is the speed it runs at. We both tend to stream a lot more these days and connecting things like a fire stick or other devices is very useful. We both also like to check our emails and keep up to date with family and friends, or more than not simply scroll through FB. Some will say a much cheaper router could have done this, but I’m a better to have more eggs in the basket than 1 or 2 type of person so it’s all down to personal choices…. The one thing I’m still experimenting with at the moment is antennas. I’ve seen that many conflicting reports that it’s hard to know for certain which is the right one. I started off with the basic Bingfu twin Ariel. They are cheap an cheerful and do an okay job. I’m now experimenting with a Poynting Puck antenna which seems to be better but still not perfect. My next port of call will be the Poynting 4g and a more expensive antenna. So I think it will be just a case of experimentation ….. My one area of concern are the pins where you connect your SMA to TS9 adapters for the antenna. They seem very tiny and fragile, and after reading reports of others breaking them off when inserting the adapters it makes me nervous. Some of the adapters seem very tight to fit in and require a little more pushing, and also don’t seem to push in very far at all. So at the moment I’m being very careful when I do this…. You will also need a SIM card for the M2 to function. At the moment I’m using a Smarty unlimited data card which has worked well in all the areas we’ve travelled too. I’ve also googled areas that we will be traveling to in the future, so may well use a different provider depending on where we are. EE seems to be the most used one. I regularly do a Speed test so everything is down to what you want …. So overall what does a no tech person think of the M2 ? …. I like how it looks and the ease of use. I can connect up to 20 devices but at the moment 3 or 4 has been our limit, and up to now have not had any real technical issues. It has very good speed capabilities, but no doubt like everything will be superseded in the future. I can use it at home/office or on the move, either in my van/car or in my pocket. It probably requires some protection such as a case or holder. In settings I can see who is online and block others from using it. I can set security levels, and check how much data I’m using…. As a 4G router I think it’s very good and suits my own personal requirements. As for the cost of purchasing? I’m retired so income is limited, however past experiences tell me what is a better option, but this will always be something down to your personal choice and pocket…. For now I will give it 4 stars simply because of the cost.
It is a power and simple to use LTE Mobile Hotspot Router with a visual display showing its usage, text messages and errors encountered. It has a long battery autonomy and has been fully tested on all national UK Networks with excellent signal coverage without the need and use of external aeriels. For anybody who needs a functional and ease of use Hotspot Router to plug and play with no fuzz look no futher it works straight out of the box and as long as you have inserted an active Sim. Extremely happy with the purchase and the only down fall is the 5G version is three times as much but otherwise high recommendable piece of hardware for all levels of users.
Ok so this is not the cheapest, but it has the best features. It’s mor like a conventional router than a pop in your pocket Mifi unit. The battery lasts about a day. Charging needs to be done with the power adater that came with it or a suitable high wattage charger, it will take an age to charge this from a standard USB charge, if at all. I use this mainly in my caravan which with an external antenna is great. Plug in a USB stick with a few films on and your good to stream them on to any device that is connected to it. Dual band WiFi and a good old fashioned ethernet port means that you can connect anything you like. The Netgear App is probably the best way to make any necessary adjustments. All in all a really good buy.
Very easy to set up. Pop the SIM card in, select provider, and you’re off. You can set data limits/warnings via the app. All very straightforward. Speed will depend on distance from masts etc, but I’ve already seen speeds of 100mb/down and 25mb upload, which beats my BT Fibre connection at home!
Excellent bit of kit for a mobile office. Does exactly what it says on the box, easy to set up, and when I’m home I plug it into a Netgear extender and the whole house has internet. SIM card is 30/month for unlimited use (sold separately-I got the SIM from EE in the U.K.) … unlimited internet whether I’m in the car, stuck in traffic so have to quickly hold that teams call and present my screen while parked in a lay-by or in a garage, if you’re in a coffee shop and you want secure ‘instant’ internet rather than than having to provide your life history to their ‘free’ internet service. When I’m in the car with all four kids who want to stream or play games on their mobile devices, iPads etc. and likewise if you’re out in the countryside. On holiday if this lockdown ever lifts. The range is up to about 15m line of sight but is not strong enough for home use to get through walls etc. hence I bought Netgear’s EAX 80 Wi-fi extender to connect it to when I’m home.
For mobile office and general home use this mobile router is perfect, I’m really really impressed. Battery life is also phenomenal, I’d suggest a week between charges, is what I’m currently doing and I usually have 6 devices connected through it using it all day 12/13 hours a day at least. Though I’m not sure what the spec says on battery life.
I’m pretty sure the number of connections it can manage is more, I think it’s up to 20. Again, more than I have ever needed.
Brilliant bit of kit not only has it created a home office where ever I am, but it’s also cut my home internet costs in half, to that regard it would have paid for itself in just a few months!
Great device, although expensive it did make a huge difference in speed and connectivity I’m regularly getting speeds of over 108mbps as before i used this I was struggling to get 20mbps you have to try and move it into a decent position but when you find it well it’s good really good!!!?
The Netgear NightHawk M2 is ideal for my purposes,i use it in my home as my default router and it covers the whole of my home with good speeds on download and uploads with a Vodaphone unlimited sim card, also when we go on holiday in our motorhome it works just great at home or abroad, yes its expensive but a good investment in the long term.
I’m travelling around Europe fixing machines that are designing a drug to help with Covid-19 in R&D labs. This MiFi has transformed my work and my hotel life. I connect my phone, iPad, laptop, firestick and VW Van and anything else I want to it. It works brilliantly with an EE 100GB sim. Watch prime, Netflix, bbc, itv, Apple TV all either in the hotel or at work while I’m waiting for Machines to do their magic. Thanks Netgear, your Nighthawk M2 really sorted me out!
Hard product to review, not many comparable products on the market. Personally it’s got me out of trouble not being able to have wifi installed in my house currently. It works, I’m getting very variable speeds [8 mbs to 101 mbs] even using ethernet cables and the router always showing 4G+ in an urban area with strong wifi.
Still to try connecting a Poynting arial to see if that makes for a steadier connection when I get the right TS9 connectors.
Main sticking point is the construction of this thing, considering its almost the same cost as an iPhone it’s all plastic body makes it feel so cheap. The back which requires removing often if using the battery has an absolutely appalling design with snap on clips, can easily see those failing. Personally I just have it plugged in full time without the battery installed.
So, if you need emergency wifi or you’re travelling this is a good option with a data only sim card deal.
Update: A few weeks living with this device and a few things to note. Trying to turn the thing off can be a nightmare. The power switch seems to ‘touch screen’ so has no feel and I have spent half an hour now trying to turn it off (via the power off screen) and had no luck. On the opposite end of the process, the start up is very slow indeed. Much slower than my previous device mentioned below. So yes its quicker. But it is such hard work as well.
Previously … After many years of using a Huawei E5577C and getting great service from it, I thought I’d upgrade to something that has had great reviews as I am sure the tech in the devices is better now than when I got the Huawei unit which was way way cheaper. I’m not a techie sort of person who deals with this stuff on a day to day basis but then I didn’t need to be with the Huawei. The Netgear Nighthawk arrived, has a quick start manual and inserting the battery, the item turned itself on. Went through the set up of new passwords no problem, it showed I had an EE card in the device but told me I am not connected to the internet and that my internet connection is disconnected and APN Set up is required. None of this is mentioned in the manual that I can see. Sorry, but what is APN and why do I need to know this when many other devices have been plug and play. I put the EE sim back into the Huawei and it worked fine. So I put the sim back into the Nighthawk, reset it, and it came up with the same message. So it wasn’t the changing of passwords etc that were causing the issue. I went and got the ipad and entered the browser address to bring up the dashboard and there made some settings which were intuitive to make and it started to work. The Nighthawk knew I had an EE card in the slot as it showed that on the display as well as the messages from EE, so why did I have to go through all the hassle of going into the dashboard to simply select EE as the sim card in the device. As ever, Netgear devices can be the most puzzling but there is some good news and that is the device on one speed download/upload test (I will do more) was twice as quick as what I was getting on the Huawei which worked but was just old tech. I should also add the battery is twice the size as the Huawei one, if not more and the Nighthawk device bigger and heavier than the Huawei. Lots more testing to be done but in summary, once the hurdles were over come, the unit is solid and fast. – Larry
I have BT for my landline broadband and was coming to my contract renewal. I can’t get full fibre. Max download speed 14mb with a service guarantee of only 3mb.
I put my 3 sim(UK) from my phone to the unit and I’m blown away. I regularly get 16 to 20 mb download speeds and in testing got to over 40mb.
Location wise I’m by the sea, a lack of masts in one direction. I’m also in a block of flats.
I’m asking the building management if I can put an external aerial in place.
If you have limited landline broadband options this could be a winner for you.
Initially had problems with the first firmware which stopped charging when the device was around 38 degrees. This was a common problem for lots of people. So far did not get that problem after the latest firmware.
In poor reception area I get about 0.6 MB (about 4-5 megabits) down and 1 MB up speed, and in excellent areas 5.5 MB down and about the same up.
The build quality is good, but not exceptional for the price. I actually prefer the non touch screen of the MR1100, because the screen keeps activating whenever I accidentally brush across the buttons when I am getting out of pocket etc. Short 5s or so, but all contributes to draining battery.
Battery life on light use is around 18hrs. Yet to try constant download.
In this model they took away the SD card slot. Would be nice to have it considering it is 130 more than the MR1100 which has one. Also for this price another ethernet port would be good.
