This scanner is perfect, i’ve had this scanner for a couple weeks now and I’ve had zero problems. We use Onedrive and the upload is super fast. The one complaint I do have is the plastic is a bit cheap and looks like after some wear and tear it might break.
I am writing to share my experience with a scanner that I have been using for the past year. Here are some of the reasons why I find it to be a practical and reliable tool for everyday use:
User-Friendly: The scanner is designed to operate without the need for a desktop computer. I find this to be very convenient, as it allows me to easily scan documents without having to deal with any additional equipment.
High-Quality Scans: The scanned PDF files are of excellent quality. This eliminates the need for a traditional flatbed scanner, which can be cumbersome to use.
Specialized Support: I encountered some difficulties with delicate papers and narrow receipts that could not be detected by the scanner’s sensor. However, the manufacturer’s support team suggested using Raven Carrier Sheets, which helped to protect the documents during the scanning process.
Long-Lasting: I have scanned over 3500 papers so far, and the scanner is still functioning perfectly. This is a testament to its durability and longevity.
Overall, I would highly recommend this scanner to anyone in need of a practical and reliable tool for daily use.
This is just the coolest device I have to import documents. I had a little trouble setting up the location of where i wanted my scans to go but Raven technical support walked me through and I was good to go. great service for a great product. I just love this thing. I always imported documents with my HP 8720 but it always gave me grief especially trying to make a PDF. Well the Raven does it all for you. You just have to find a good PDF program which is difficult to find. Adobe use to be a one time purchase and now you need to renew every year. I bought another PDF Program it is so so but forget that, this is a raven review. Just trust me the Raven will simplify your document scanning life. FAST, ACCURATE, NEAT. I love it.
I was looking for a Mac compatible scanner with standalone capabilities, with direct upload to cloud destinations. Read a view reviews and took the gamble, had to order it through Amazon Uk because it was not available yet in Europe. It turned out very good, fast and reliable. After a few weeks Raven contacted me by phone (!) to ask me if i was satisfied. And I am! She explained (in an e-mail) how to make groups to directly scan to different folders within a cloud-destination.
I just received and set up the scanner, signed up for Raven Cloud, and started scanning. The assembly of the machine was easy except attaching the input tray, which was a little tricky to snap in. I connected the scanner to my home network via ethernet so I can’t say how well the WiFi setup and connection works. It recognized the network instantly over ethernet.
Scan quality is excellent (admittedly a small sample), OCR was outstanding – better than Adobe or anything else I’ve used. Speed is amazing – as long as I remember to press okay / send.
OCR of a complex document (actually the quick start instructions for the scanner, laid out in “story boxes” with graphics) to a thumb drive took a while. Probably because OCR actually happens on the cloud and not on the machine. I think in the future if I want things OCR’d I’ll send them to the Raven Cloud so it (hopefully) does not hold up processing on the scanner.
The website is easy, intuitive, and snappy. Adding users and destinations is easy. Managing received files is easy. I have not played with the editing features on the site yet.
First impressions – the scanner is a great value and so much easier to use than previous scanners I’ve owned, even easier than the expensive (thousands of dollars) multi-function devices in my place of employment. Definitely recommended.
Raven Original Scanner takes everything I hated about scanners and fixed it. The large touchscreen makes it a breeze to scan, upload, and organize documents. It’s now a part of the daily routine to scan everything that comes in and then shred it.
I highly recommend the Raven Original Scanner for anyone in need of a high-speed, quality scanner. This scanner is able to handle large volumes of documents (of all sizes up to letter) quickly and efficiently, while also producing clear and accurate scans.
The Raven Original Scanner is also very easy to use, with intuitive controls and a user-friendly interface. Additionally, the scanner is built with durable materials and is designed to withstand heavy use.
If you modify the settings (just a couple of taps), you can easily scan thicker ID cards, credit cards, or odd-shaped documents. I have done this on several occasions and very rarely do I have to do it more than once to get it right. I have also had very, very few jams or misfeeds that weren’t my fault.
Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase of the Raven Original Scanner and I believe it is an excellent option for anyone in need of a high-speed scanner.
Love having the scanner available and close by. Makes it so easy to scan the pile of papers on my desk so I can get rid of them. I especially like the width adjustment to hold a receipt as it is scanned in the raven. On the con side, it does have a very large footprint and I wish the input tray was easily removed or folded to help with the amount of space it consumes.
I was planning to buy a new Scansnap iX1300 duplex WiFi scanner (which, at the time, was $270.00). I really wanted the Raven Original scanner, but I considered the price premium of $125.00 – given that I don’t need to scan documents very often – to be too great. I think that the price difference between the two above-mentioned scanners is completely justified, as I believe that the Raven Original scanner is better, but I, personally, couldn’t justify the extra cost.
Over the Christmas period, Amazon reduced the price of the Raven Original scanner, and the price premium over the Scansnap iX1300 dropped to $50.00…and I happily bought the Raven Original scanner (and was relieved that I hadn’t already bought the Scansnap).
The Raven Original scanner was very easy to set up. I have downloaded the Raven software to my phone and to my laptop, but I actually configured the scanner itself directly from its own touchscreen.
The Raven Original scanner can easily be configured and operated without either a phone or a computer. You simply insert the documents that you want to scan, and press the “SCAN” button. You can set the scan resolution and destinations directly from the touchscreen, or use one of the scan profiles that you have previously created. This is a stand-alone device.
I know that I haven’t had the scanner for very long, but I am delighted with its performance…and, based on the thousands of glowing reviews, I don’t expect that to change.
I also like that Raven is an American company. The only thing that I think would improve the Raven Original scanner is if it was actually made in America (I realize that this also applies to almost everything that we buy, unfortunately).
Many things I like about it:
-Can be used stand-alone and scanned directly to a cloud folder in Google Drive, Dropbox and others.
-It has a very nice touchscreen.
-Scans Pages Fast (takes a few seconds to process after each scan).
-I received several emails after registering to offer set-up support for free. I ended up agreeing to a 15-minute phone review where the person asking questions solved what I thought was a drawback of the machine (having a favorites selection to scan to select from a couple of google drive folders–turns out the group button can be used in that way)
-Offers a Raven Storage Account at no cost, good if you’re not using another online service.
-A new little riddle or witty saying is displayed in the corner of the screen each time it wakes up, nothing to do with scanning, but it makes me smile. The Mark Twain of scanners, lol.
I’ve been regularly scanning business documents for about 15 years and have used several scanners, and multi-function copiers (Konica, Toshiba). This is the best. This scanner is a good deal for the price.
This is a nice very versatile network scanner. The only gripe I have is that your only choice for configuring its destinations is through its built-in touch screen. For most, this isn’t going to be a problem but, for me, it hampers my ability to support it remotely. For example, if I want to add or change a destination due to staff changes or anything else, I have to drive to the scanner’s location to perform the task at the scanner itself. If it had a network-accessible UI, I could do that remotely. That’s an annoyance most people wouldn’t have to deal with and that’s the only reason I knocked a star off.
This is by far the best scanner I have used.
This is what happens when you combine engineering with good usability and software.
It is very user friendly, simple to set-up, quick to operate and scans double sides.
I always do extensive product benchmarking and check out product reviews and couldn’t find anything similar to what Raven Original and Pro had to offer. I ended up going with the Original model due to the lower price and because I didn’t need so many pages scanned per minute.
I also have a brother professional all in one printer (DCP-9020CDW) but the interface and scanning capabilities are limited and I was never able to set up scan to email.
I love the simplicity of the raven scanner original model, the continuous software updates and friendly and easy to reach support.
Seems like Uber for scanners, which leave other scanners in the dark ages.
I just wished the price point would be more affordable.
I was a little cautious about this one as it was a bit more expensive than others, but it was worth it. I primarily wanted a scanner for scanning documents/tax/expenses and do NOT want to connect it to a computer. I want the scans to go to google drive so i can access on whatever computer i am on.
This took 5 minutes to setup. The scanner is super quick and will scan either single sided or both sides. I scanned 12 pages in less than a minute, it sent the PDF to google drive and i was done.
Pros:
– Big screen makes it easy to set options
– paper feeder for multiple sheets
– setup for google drive or mail
– can output to PDF or JPG
– Double sided scanning a real bonus
– Scans are clear and clean (unlike taking a photo with my phone)
– Quick. 200/300 DPI are super quick. 600 DPI takes longer but 1 page still took less than a minute to scan (double sided) and send to drive
– Setup was super quick. Take the tape off, plug it in, setup wifi and then (on computer) create account @ raven.com and connect Google Drive. Then login on scanner and you’re done.
Cons:
– bit pricier than other scanners
Really impressed, very good quality scans, easy to setup email and network shares.
It is missing the ability to send it direct to a printer which would be nice for copying big documents.
It also always seem to try to default to scanning to raven cloud, I haven’t yet found how to setup ‘scan to…’ defaults yet.
But so far so good, quick, good quality, good value for money.
The scanner is running a custom Android software. It’s extremely easy to use. There are various scanning qualities, options, sizes, and more. It also has a companion app so you can access your scans iOS, Android, Mac & PC.
It is able to scan directly to a wide variety of file sharing services, including Google Drive, Neat, One Drive and more.
What I found most interesting is that the scanner comes with unlimited file storage directly through Raven. I thought it was going to be a lame gimmick, but when I tried it for myself, it turned out to be great. When you scan to Raven, it organizes chronologically and allows you to edit PDFs within the web app. The web app also allows you to stamp and sign documents, which is something I was surprised to find.
I highly recommend any of the several options from Raven, but if you have the money to spring for it, I think this is truly the perfect scanner!
I just got this thing and have only done a bit but first impression is WOW. Having the big touchscreen interface makes using this thing 10 times easier than my multi-function printer. It works great, is fast and super convenient to use.
Update:
This is the second update. Original item had an out of the box problem and raven dropped the ball on taking care of me. I was very angry, to say the least. Long story short, my issue was escalated and the supervisor that came to the rescue went out of his way to resurrect the relationship. Also, because of warehouse closures (end of the year stuff) he had a replacement scanner shipped through amazon fulfillment vs their warehouse to get it into my hands almost immediately.
Even though there was a snafu, they went out of their way to make it right in the end. I’d recommend them in a heartbeat. I’m removing one star for that initial customer service deal.
Prior to purchasing I had an idea that would revolutionize our home organization! We have a NAS (small file server on our WiFi network) that I wanted to use for scanning our mail. Currently, we have a dedicated desk that has been buried under months of invoices, statements, documents, confirmations, flyers, pamphlets, school mailings, volunteer mailings, and countless more that my wife insists we keepjust in case. The Raven was my solution if I could only organize the scanned files easily. My idea was to make folders for each category with sub-folders when I needed more organization. The Raven not only was able to do this but it made it painless to select the right destination! My one and only issue was the effort involved with establishing new folders required me to enter the network file path manually (these are long at times) and the network login/password for every. single. folder. every. single. time. I had a new group of documents (e.g., heating bills). However, once done, I did not have to do it again and they all remain after unplugging the Raven Scanner too (thank goodness!). Thank you, Raven, for making the organization possible and easy!
Customer support is unbelievably great. I could not get some receipts to scan because they were very narrow. The next day a customer service representative sent me instructions and a video that he appeared to have created just for me. Putting the document feeder on the narrowest setting and placing the receipts all the way to the right of that allowed the scanner to sense the documents.
A phone meeting with another representative provided information on how to scan thick items like passports and identification cards. You just temporarily disable the multi-feed sensor. Works great.
The document feeder only handles about forty sheets at a time. If you have longer items, simply scan the first forty pages, then click the add button after you load the next forty. It scans all as one continuous file. You can also review the scanned pages and remove any you do not wish to keep.
The OCR mode is always active on my scanner and it works amazing. I can scan numerous miscellaneous documents, send them to a thumb drive and an email address, and search them anytime I want. This is great for records that you want to keep but may not regularly need. No more boxes or files full of papers.
Customer support also pointed out that you can attach a keyboard using the USB on the back of the scanner so you can quickly name each scanned file if you want to avoid the slower digital keyboard on the touchscreen.
I highly recommend this scanner. I love getting rid of hard copies and easily handling incoming mail and other items.
I like this a lot more than I thought I would.
The features I really like:
– Goes directly to the cloud – I don’t need to involve a computer to scan. When I get something I drop it in, it goes directly to google drive and I categorize it later. Very easy to use!
– OCR’s documents, making them searchable .
– Orients pages the right way – landscape pages get rotated, etc. Of the hundreds of documents I scanned I did have a problem with one 50-page document printed in a cursive font where about 10% of pages were upside down and I had to re-orient them at the touchscreen, but this was very much the exception, and I was able to fix it at the scanner.
– Wireless
– Allows me to delete pages or re-orient them on the touchscreen
– Fast, scans double sided pages no problem, removes blank pages.
– I can easily scan a multi-page document with different size page sizes.
Some things I don’t like:
– It listens on port-80; there is an unauthenticated web server that allows you to upgrade firmware and download logs. The logs contain the cleartext wifi password. Rookie security issues that should not exist.
– For documents that are OCR’ed and documents that go to the cloud it includes /author and /creator tags using the email address you used for the raven account. I was able to sanitize on linux using qpdf, but this is an extra step I don’t like. For documents that go, e.g. to a local NAS and are not OCR’ed the tags are not present.
– The touchscreen is not as responsive as it could be
– It appears to SLAAC an EUI64 IPv6 address, but it is not usable – IPv6 appears to have been disabled.
Other:
I happened to have a very small USB keyboard which I attached – this makes it easier to name documents at the scanner. The device is Android so you can use the touchscreen to name documents, but the keyboard is easier.
It is a document scanner – probably not the best choice to scan photos, etc.
To do everything local, you download Raven Desktop (from the raven website), then use the “printer cable” looking cord that has kind of a square-ish end that goes into your scanner, and a USB-A connection on the other end that you plug into your computer. (NOTE: on my Raven scanner, the square-ish port you want to plug this cord into on the back of the scanner had a sticker over it that said, “Not Required”…which is a little misleading, because you CAN still use that port, you just don’t have to if you don’t mind scanning into the Raven Cloud) Once you attach the scanner to your computer via USB, Raven Desktop will automagically load up the correct drivers for you, then you can get started! If you want to keep things local, you’ll just want to designate a folder on your computer where you would like your scans stored, and then be sure to pick that folder as the ONLY destination when you scan.
It’s really cool, too, that you can actually choose multiple destinations for your scans in Raven Desktop! So, if you had a backup drive where you wanted to maintain additional copies, you can do that all in one go. But at the same time, if you want to make sure all your stuff stays local, you can turn off the internet connection in the Settings.
I love how fast it scans BOTH sides of documents, as well as the convenient settings like auto-straighten, and remove blank pages, and that it can auto-detect the length if it’s something like a long receipt. One thing I’m not sure about just yet is the OCR function. I believe I read that the AI for that is in the Raven Cloud, so I don’t think you can use that function if you scan directly to your computer through USB. However, you can use the open source program NAPS2 (Not Another PDF Scanner 2) to scan with this scanner instead of the Raven Desktop program, and NAPS2 has a computer based OCR function. It would be really nice if they could add a choice in the Workflow settings of Raven Desktop, to use NAPS2 OCR so you could use that while keeping everything local. But that’s my only complaint.
We got this 2 months ago to replace scanning from our old copier which we used to scan to email. The old copier was manual duplex (pulls in paper 2 times to do double sided scans). The old copier didn’t support new security protocols. This fit the bill for our small 6 person office and is small enough to be at our receptionists desk. Now she doen’t have to go all the way to an old copier to use an old manual duplex scanner.
We don’t use all the features. Our primary usage is as a wifi standalone duplex scanner that scans to email. With that said we would’ve liked to use our own Office 365 SMTP server but it keeps saying our .org email address is not a valid email address. I think it only allows .com email addresses for the server email setup. We use the built-in email server from Raven and it works fine when I add them to our whitelist.
Being able to fax without a phone line using Raven’s service is also nice.
Being that we only scan to email we would like on-device OCR processing but that would drive up the cost of the device. If you need OCR it only works when you save it to the Raven cloud.
It’s a good value if you use all it’s cloud services/features. Free outbound faxing will save you some money but you’ll need another solution for incoming faxes.
Having multiple users (unlimited) is nice but as a shared device we just keep one user and upkeep an email address book. Another gripe I have is that email addresses must be inputed one by one from the screen. There is no way to import an address book via the cloud. I haven’t tried the new desktop app. A quick video shows it has a lot of features but doesn’t mention importing an address book. Each user will have to configure their own address book.
As far as duplex scanning it is fast and you can tell it before hand if you want it face up or face down when scanning single sided documents. That’s nice. Compression is comparable to our copiers in other locations. At higher dpi settings the quailty really shines through. They are so clean and clear. Its still relatively fast at higher DPI settings.
I have a few family friends that have small businesses and I would recommend this to them but they are actually retiring in a few years.
I was looking for a scanner for my business and the main requirement was that it had to work without a computer. I mostly use it to scan receipts, but it can do any double-sided documents including business cards.
I had unrealistic hopes that it could scan a stack of receipts which unfortunately did not work. I don’t blame Raven though as the receipts were folded, edges weren’t torn evenly, etc. I was able to scan 2 years worth of receipts in record time though because you can continue adding pages via a simple touchscreen button and set it to save files individually. It then uploads straight to my Google Drive folder.
I also hoped it would come with software to parse out receipt data. Unfortunately it isn’t ready yet, but their tech support said it’s close. I have heard that the main competitor has issues with the software since it’s just basic OCR so this isn’t a big deal to me.
I am amazed that I continue to find new features though. Just today I noticed an option to send a fax so I gave it a try. I was shocked that the process was so smooth and shortly after I received a call to my cell phone which I used to test it. There doesn’t seem to be a fee for this service and I can now fax without a home phone line.
I can’t recommend this scanner enough. It’s a solid device that has been flawless so far. The company continues to put out updates to allow for connections to new software. I feel like it’s the Tesla of business scanners!
**UPDATE 2022-04-05**
Raven sent me a replacement scanner and a shipping label to send the defective one back. The new one is working great, very fast and pages are getting scanned completely with no issues. This company has an amazing level of customer support that I have not experienced in recent memory. Props to their support team, they’re great!
**Initial review**
Just got the scanner. Positive: Very easy to set up and get connected to Wi-Fi. I logged into Raven Cloud and the scans are fast. HUGE NEGATIVE: Scanned pages get randomly cut off at the end when set to Auto page size. Ok, so I will manually set the page size to 8.5 x 11″, that should solve it right? Nope. Now what was formerly cut off is just a blank section near the end. It’s like it’s out of calibration, when this happens it appears that the top of the page is shifted down more than it should be. There seems to be no way to calibrate the scanner.
I have opened a support ticket with Raven and I’ve heard they have marvelous customer support. Hopefully this is true. As of right now I am unable to trust that scanned pages are complete without looking through each page, which is a pain on a 50+ page document.
I opened an incident with Raven Support and they have determined there is a hardware issue with my scanner. They are going to be supplying a replacement. I have never received such a prompt and competent level of support as I have with this company. I will be sure to update this review when the scanner arrives.
Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1600 is superior, if it’s all about THE big touch screen then Raven wins but also Raven is more of a cloud , I want to see a desktop folder, it does have this but wasn’t an easy install, dont have time to call tech support which they encourage, so I reinstalled my
Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1600 , it seems s quicker and is easier it created a folder automatically vs the cloud , can’t load to cloud because i HAVE SENSITIVE INTO, SO IN SHORT
Fujitsu ScanSnap iX1600 IS SUPERIOR WITH BEING EASIER TO USE, QUICKER AND MORE SOLID, FEEL raven CARES AND ITS GOOD BUT FELT THEY DON’T HAVE The KINKS worked, they seem to want feedback that’s good, , JUST DON’T HAVE TIME TO SPEND TO FIGURE IT ALL OUT SHOULD BE PLUG AND PLAY NO NEED FOR TECH SUPPORT, BUILD IS SO LIKE The SCANSNAP, just should have been set up and go vs aset up and figure out how to create a desktop folder, scansnap also give you the progress, again if its about the screen go for it, if its about easy set up go with scansnap.
I needed something to help me go paperless and was gladly surprised that the Raven Scanner Original 2 performed better than expected. It can work by itself without an computer, or one can download the Raven app and tell the scanner what to do from the computer. You can hook it up through either a USB cable, a network cable or through WiFi. The actual setup of the Raven account can be done through the scanner itself and its one of the easiest setups I’ve seen for a device like this. It will upload the scanned file to many destinations, including to and encrypted SOHO NAS. My scanner does actually a bit more than the 40 pages per minute advertised.
What is the worst part of the Raven Original 2?
Nothing much to report here. Maybe that very thin and small cash register slips that are like 2 inches and under wide can’t be scanned vertically. Just shove that slip into the feeder horizontally and it will scan no problem. Don’t worry, the scanner software will auto correct the orientation if set in the menu. Slips that are regular 3 inches wide, go through the scanner vertically like mad.
Paper jams do happen, but that really depends on the paper and how long it sat in a certain position. I try to scan 20 – 30 pages at a time and fan the paper both sides before scanning, then just add the following scan to the previous scan to create a large PDF. The scanner combined multiple scans to one big PDF with 200 pages no problem. With big PDF’s like this, it takes a little bit for the scan to appear to what ever folder or cloud service you sent it to, I guess due to processing.
Over all I am really glad I’ve got my scanner and give it all thumbs up. So far I wore my shredder out, all the scanner needed was the occasional cleaning of the imager (paper dust from shredding beside the scanner and the old paper by itself).
What is the outstanding stuff?
The Raven Support. Hands down. Try it. Nuff said.
