I was concerned by the profusion of articles across the internet about Samsung’s Quality Control, but still decided to go with this as I wanted a high refresh rate 4k monitor with good HDR capabilities without dealing with any of the OLED burn in drama (old enough to have dealt with that from CRT screens, no interest in repeating the experience) and VA panels have always been considerably easier on my eyes than IPS ones.
My unit has no problems whatsoever. The colour balance is superb, the contrast is excellent, the picture and motion clarity are both exceptional. I have seen no scan-lines in any content, there are no dead-pixels, and the local dimming feature works properly. I actually had to turn DOWN the brightness in HDR content as the display is quite capable of creating genuine glare, which is a new experience for me from a computer monitor.
The curve is slightly disconcerting for about half an hour then becomes imperceptible but it does create a slight oddity. I started out with the monitor as far back on my desk as possible—which is fine, but the typical “touch the screen at arm’s length” advice makes for a much better experience.
As mentioned by others, the stand itself and its connection to the monitor, while perfectly secure, wobbles when using the controls (or dropping a reference book on your desk) due to the swivel/adjustment mechanism. The only other minor quibble I have is that the “mood lighting” feature of the back LED which is supposed to colour cycle to match whatever you’re viewing simply doesn’t work and will always show some variety of blue. You can pick your own static colour perfectly fine though, and I honestly wouldn’t have noticed this at all if I hadn’t seen it mentioned elsewhere and chosen to check my own unit.
I’m more than satisfied with my unit and would recommend it to anyone. I will note that I did make sure to buy from Amazon themselves as I was sufficiently concerned by Quality Control horror stories to want the peace of mind, but it proved unnecessary.
I though my LG was good, but this blows the socks off it. The blacks are sooooo black and lights hurt your eyes (I had to turn the brightness down). Came with an adapter if you need a vesa mount. Does take up quite a bit of desk space.
FPS game play is so much better. Being able to see into the shadows.
For watching movies, the curved screen is odd, as it is for desktop use, but you get use to it.
Only complaints are it should have some settings on as default, the stand could be a little better, but main one is the controls. My LGs nipple is so easy and quick to use, but the separate buttons on the Samsung (4 way plus centre) can be difficult to press.
I’m a software engineer which means screen real estate is very important.
This monitor is amazing.
The blacks are perfect when working in dark mode and don’t strain your eyes.
The only criticism would be when using with Mac, if you’re doing productivity work, not gaming, you’ll need to disable HDR as the white windows bleed into the blacks.
Fantastic piece of kit, but comes with a huge price tag.
My monitor in particular has a slight popping sound which reading about the monitor some do have, hoping this will vanish in time like some have reported and only really noticeable when no other sounds are playing.
For gaming, it is amazing as the screenshots i have attached of F1 show.
Takes a lot of space on the desk, but as i was replacing a multi monitor setup it has not made that much difference.
VFM? – well thats all depends on the individual perspective. For me, i think its slightly overpriced, but at the same time i dont regret buying it at all.
After confirming the order I got second thoughts on spending so much on a monitor but once it arrived and got it set up I have no regrets. Great picture quality, a screen that is a joy to work and game on and is way better than my previous dual non matching monitor set up. It has great picture in picture modes too.
Huge fantastic monitor with a lot going for it. After hearing the many scare stories online about Samsung quality checking, I was quite sceptical going into this purchase. I’m so glad I did purchase one. The panel was perfect with no dead pixels and the monitor was loaded with the latest firmware out of the box. A trouble-free experience. Be vary careful when lifting the monitor, it is genuinely a heavy beast. Ask a friend for help if you need it, better than the alternative.
I did encounter the slight creaking aspect for about the first week when the monitor warmed up, but that has disappeared entirely with regular use. If you have this issue, genuinely just wait a week or two and it’ll eventually stop.
The monitor is great, but oddly, I got the best experience when paired with an Nvidia card. The AMD card I had didn’t seem to achieve the peak brightness that this monitor was capable of (seemed to cap at 1000 nits). When switching out to an Nvidia card, I was able to reach the 2000 nits brightness advertised. I can’t rule out whether this was a configuration or driver issue, but worthwhile noting. Your mileage may vary on this aspect.
The monitor’s HDR function is brilliant, I really loved the size, the 1000r curve and overall display quality.
However, the monitor had a green pixel fail on first power on in the centre of the screen ( it was permanently lit ) and it also had horrific yellow banding across the centre third of the screen which was very visible on every white webpage you went on.
This monitor is great for gaming. For office things, you do not need to spend that much money I do believe
Absolutely brilliant monitor nothing matches it on the market in my opinio
I’m heavily into gaming, enjoy fast paced shooters and cinematic triple A titles. Tried the LG 38GN950, Samsung Odyssey G7, Asus PG32UQ, but this is a totally different level of immersion. The HDR performance is incredible and lifts every game I’ve played to almost total immersive realism. My unit was direct from Samsung and shipped with the latest 1011 firmware, I’ve had no performance or build quality issues. I’m in the process of replaying all my favourite games as they are so much more enjoyable on this. Absolutely love it and can’t recommend enough to any serious gamers.
Super bright, Super fast, it has a couple of bugs where the monitor flickers when pc is waking from sleep (fixed by turning off and on), The screen used to randomly go black for a second (fixed by turning off the rgb lights at back).
My particular unit got a stuck pixel 2 months after purchase.
Other than that, I really like this monitor and wont be upgrading for a while.
Pro’s
——-
* It’s lovely.
* Incredible for gaming.
* Awesome and helps you be more productive. That’s not a throw away comment. I provide network / server / infrastructure support and it’s an amazing screen to use to manage my customers networks and systems. The ease at which I can move my open applications around, and have the main app in the middle and the supporting apps each side, makes this screen a real benefit .
Con’s
——–
* It’s so expensive! It took an age to build up the courage to buy it.
* Make sure your equipment is compatible.
* It was a pain to set-up.
* Windows 11 is a must to get the best from the HDR.
* My other two screens are suffering from contrast / brightness issues since I added this. Tweaking their OSD has made no difference, although I have not had time to have a more in-depth look. I had no problems when I had four separate screens (but I still would not change the current set-up with the Neo).
* I thought the screen was broken as I couldn’t get it to work, until I found my graphics card has a Primary DP socket I needed to plug this into. I also have a primary HDMI – who knew!
Summary
========
Overall, and despite the expense, I think this was a great buy. I’m not a massive gamer any more, but I still dabble and love playing on it. However, the improvement in productivity and sheer pleasure I get from using it, is more than I expected. I assumed it would be good, but it’s actually great! I would love a second to go above it, but I think that would probably be excessive, and I don’t think I could find an arm to hold it up that high.
With that in mind, I got the Ergotron HX for screen size up to 49″, and it is worth the extra money.
sadly this monitor arrived in perfect, dent free, pristine packaging. huge and heavy. sadly upon opening, immediately i could see a large black crack down the left hand side of the screen. the front of the glass was 100% intact without a single scratch on the monitor. don’t think the box or even monitor had been dropped as no sign of impact which something so heavy would have made – can only think that somehow during manufacturing process something has happened which broke it. pity, i have heard about samsung quality control. so this review is not to reflect the quality of the monitor…however… amazon service was first class. i told them what happened via chat. they advised that of course i could return it – despite the value i would have expected some debate or push back. i raised the return and was impressed that it offered UPS collection which is great as the box is gigantic. UPS arrived next business day, collected and back at amazon within a couple of days. then return processed back to my card right away. A+ service from amazon. high value items like this, will always pick amazon for that peace of mind.
Worth the extra price over the previous version? Probably not, but the improvement over the back light and hdr definitely make the difference in my opinion.
Depends how much you use HDR but most of the earlier issues youtubers or reviews point out are ironed out and this is now a excellent, albeit expense monitor.
Loving it. It’s a huge statement to anyone who visits. It’s a piece of art. I would not, no, cannot ever go back to a regular monitor again.
Brightness and colour are amazing …. I think the best monitor you can buy right now.
Suitable for gaming and development.
Use with Samsung Easy Setting Box to allow screen to be split in sections for example you can simulate three monitors with this.
This monitor is awesome !
