Although technically classed as a British brand, Sekonda watches were originally produced in the USSR. That’s all changed now of course, so there’s no need to fear that you’d be supporting an evil regime. In fact, nowadays they are made under Communist China, in Hong Kong. Some have feared that the likes of Huawei phones might be broadcasting data back to Beijing, although I’m fairly sure that they haven’t taken to bugging analogue watches. Even if they had, then fairplay to them. I haven’t tested it with one of those scanners like you get in spy films. However, if there really were to be a small microphone inside then I can only applaud their efforts. Fortunately, I don’t actually know any state secrets so it doesn’t really matter to me anyway. Even if I did, whenever speaking about them I could simply play a very loud audio tape of Doreen and I making love, in order to throw any listeners off the scent.
Anyhow, this is a rather nice time piece. It features a chronometer, which is useful for timing such things as a morning jog, a respectful minute’s silence for the recently deceased or some boiled eggs. It came in a size that is slightly large for my wrist, although you can easily get a couple of links removed by the reformed criminals who work in any branch of Timpson’s. Although I wouldn’t let them anywhere near a Rolex, at this price you probably won’t need to keep an overly watchful eye on the process. Just insist that it be done there and then, and be quite clear that you are *not* prepared to leave it unattended with them, overnight.
Anyhow, all in all, this is a very nice looking watch with a reliable quartz mechanism. It’s waterproof up to a good few metres, and thus ought to cope easily with a bog snorkeling holiday to mid-Wales. It’s not quite in the Bond category of watches, mind. The second hand ticks, rather than sweep around with that extra touch of finesse. However, this would certainly be more than adequate for the main character to wear in a zany spoof of the genre.
This Sekonda watch arrived well presented with a cardboard sleeve around the main box. However, I did find it a bit annoying that the Amazon sticker had been placed onto the main Sekonda box, although it did peel off (with care). I feel that the sticker should have been placed on the white cardboard sleeve, but this is likely to be Amazon’s fault rather than the sellers. Otherwise, the watch is contained within a black, flip hinged box which although not the highest quality is definitely good enough to gift the watch in. The watch I selected to test was the silver stainless steel band / casing with a 45mm round analogue black dial and black bezel with tachymeter markings on. Inside the box there is also a 2-year warranty card with a website link on the reverse which outlines the instructions for the watch. The watch has a piece of protective film to protect the glass and there are bits of paper to prevent the straps — these protective elements need removing before use.
My partner is wearing the watch for everyday use and due to its neutral design and colours, it works well with any outfit whether casual or formal. He says that it is comfortable and has a good weight to it without being cumbersome. He also likes the fact that it is water resistance so doesn’t have to worry about splashes. It’s worth noting he doesn’t wear it in the shower as the chemicals in the soaps could affect the finish over time. The watch is water resistance up to 50 metres.
There is a small window to the bottom right (between the 4th and 5th hour) which displays the month’s date but unfortunately this doesn’t take into account months that have 30 or 28 days and you will need to manually adjust the date by pulling out the central crown winder on the right-hand side of the face. This winder is also how you set the time (by pulling the crown out even further — it has two steps). Push the crown back in when finished setting the date and time.
The watch also acts as a chronograph with the three smaller windows on the watch face. These three windows indicate the seconds, minutes and hours that have passed since you begin. It also has split times too if you need to record a few different timings. These functions are enacted with the two buttons either side of the main crown of the side of the watch. I feel like this is relatively basic but then again, I think you can only expect so much at this price range.
There are several choices of strap / face combinations available, but I opted for the stainless-steel band which seems very durable and matches the face of the watch well. It feels very secure. The face of the watch is very clear to read and even the smaller chronograph dials are readable. The hands and hour markers have a copper finish which adds a nice contrast to the black background and white minute markers. The watch uses Japanese quartz movements which should keep time well. It has a battery life of 2 years but since the watch arrived running, I’m not sure how long it has been sat in the warehouse and therefore how long the initial battery will last which is a bit disappointing.
Priced at 99.99 at the time of reviewing, I would say this is affordable for a watch of this quality and feels very contemporary which looks great on. It has obviously been made from premium materials and with all of the features included I would definitely recommend this watch. I think it looks more expensive than it actually is!
This watch feels very comfortable on the wrist and doesn’t weigh your arm down. It feels secure and light. It has a nice large face to easily see the dials especially the small chronograph dials. The strap is strong and is flexible enough to bend into shape to fasten securely around the wrist. There are suitable holes for large or small wrists. In a couple of years’ time (depending on frequency of use) the straps will need to be replaced which can easily be done via clips on each strap.
The hands on the watch including the ones on the chronograph have small photoluminescent material on the surface allowing them to glow in the dark. For it to work, it appears that the watch needs a significant amount of exposure to a bright source of light to be effective and lasting in the dark.
The battery is said to last up to two years.
No app is needed to operate this watch. It is simple and works right out of the box.
A smart looking solid watch that will last a long time.
A lovely Mens watch. Well-made and looks stylish.
When the world is going towards smart watches, this watch brings it back to old school simplicity.
An absolutely amazing watch. It arrived quick and it was very well packed. It is very sturdy and very well made. It looks very stylish and it blends well with any style of clothing.
This watch has Japanese quartz movements providing quality timekeeping. Battery life up to 2 years. Appropriate for any event whether it’s casual everyday wear or a more formal occasion.
It has a very durable and resistant double straps.
It has up to 50 metres water resistance perfect to wear whilst bathing and swimming and for everyday wear without having to worry about it or needing to take it on and off every time you take a shower or take park in any activity that involves water.
This watch fastens with an interchangeable black leather strap. The watch has a round, stainless steel case with a black bezel, tachymeter markings and a black dial. Features include 1 second chronograph timing up to 1 hour, 24 hour read out, a date display.
It’s an absolute masterpiece at an affordable price. Amazing quality, very sturdy, well made and resistant….also very versatile. Definitely worth the price. I am gladly recommending this to anyone who is looking for a good fair priced watch.
I had this watch in the “Black, Black” option, which features a leather strap, black and stainless steel face, with rose-gold coloured detailing.
Currently retailing at 89.99, I was impressed by this watch and it’s features, including a stop watch, date and 50meter water resistance.
I got this for my Dad but I was a bit reluctant to give it him, as I like it for myself. It’s quite lightweight but it’s just too big for my wrist (not in length but the size of the face).
On my Dad, this watch only just fitted him on the largest hole, but there’s room for extra to be added.
I ordered this for my husband as he loves his watches, and he is a particular fan of Sekonda.
The watch comes in a nice display box, so as with most watches, it would make for a very good gift idea.
After taking it out of the box, we noticed the limited instructions. It’s not a big deal and watches aren’t the most complicated of items to use, but it would have been nice to have something reasonably substantial to refer to.
The watch is very well made as you’d expect for the price and the Sekonda name. The strap is strong and feels very well made where the pin joins the watch face. Something we can’t say about other watches we have both had in the past.
The face of the watch looks lovely. There doesn’t appear to be an alarm but that doesn’t bother him. He likes watches for their looks and feel, and this one is great on both fronts.
Very smart looking watch, a big 45mm dial sporting a tachymeter, around the bezel. The model is 30023 Velocity and It has three ‘buttons, a winder and two others for various functions for the timing, split timing and resets.
The strap and case are made in stainless steel and the strap matches the ‘chunky’ feel of the watch. with a good clasp.
Instructions are sparse, to the point and accessed via the Sekonda web site as is the warranty. A little disappointed that there is no alarm or day display, it’s not as if it’s not big enough to carry off both. Guaranteed waterproof to 50 meters, it can be worn whilst swimming. At a penny under 100 it does look more expensive.
Despite the lack of an alarm, I will go with four stars for quality and price.

This gents watch from Sekonda is a lovely. In this modern age of apps, bells and whistles it’s kind of refreshing to get back to basics with a nice watch. The target audience here is difficult to pinpoint, as it feels slightly too posh for every day wear, but with the different dials on the watch it’s a little bit too fussy to be used as a dress watch.
I was slightly surprised as I consider myself to have medium wrists but I actually used the very last hole on the black leather strap. The watch itself is very attractive but it’s black and gold styling, and there are 3 mini dials providing a stopwatch function and a date window. There is no light or alarm.
To summarise, this is a good looking watch with a good build quality and represents decent value.
Sekonda has a long-standing good reputation for good quality budget watches. They are British design and use Japanese Quartz Movement which will produce good results for the price.
Generally speaking this is a nice looking Chronograph watch with a fairly good and tasteful design. For the price it represents good value.
You can however tell some of the small differences compared with going up to the next price level, which are mainly down to the finish, presentation and finer details, which all give you that extra sense of pride of ownership.
* For instance on this Watch, the strap is just Leather Upper rather than full leather. You can change this though if it bothers you. (See photos of other strap colours/types that I have tried)
* Also often on pricier watches the part of the face around the edge is often raised more, making the distance from face to glass more shallow and looking nicer to the eye.
* The presentation box is decent for the price but not quite luxury.
The chronograph generally works well although it can be a little difficult to read exactly where the second hand is pointing to, not unique to this watch. The minute hand for the chronograph also moves around gradually like the main hour and minute hands rather than moving forward one step each time the second hand passes zero (60). I would have preferred the step approach personally for greater clarity on the minute reading.
There is also a dial which for me is a little pointless, just helping you tell the time in 24 hour mode (IE 4:00PM equals 1600 hours). It basically is a single pointer that moves around a dial which is marked every 2 hours and labelled every 4 hours.
If you keep in mind the limitations, then this watch offers good value whilst lacking that final touch for extra pride of ownership.
See photos.
—EDIT 17 October 2022—
Changed the strap for a Blue/Grey leather one. Much more comfortable, and I like the look of it
more this way. (See Photo) (Also see another photo with how it looks with other different coloured leather straps).
—EDIT 28 October 2022—
Eighteen days after setting the time I checked again. The Watch had lost 2 seconds, which is pretty accurate for the price of the item. Estimated to lose approx 40 seconds in a year.
Hope this is helpful to you.
This was 89.99 at time of review, which I think is a great price for a beautiful watch. My husband absolutely loves it. It’s leather strap is comfortable and has a beautiful design on the fascia. Top marks from us!
I really like this watch and it’s far more attractive in real life than the promotion photos suggest. I chose the black-face and silver case option with the black strap and the rose gold detailing. Unless you look closely and see the Sekonda branding, this could pass for a watch that cost a great deal more. It is comfortable to wear and it does look good. It does have a functioning chronograph that is quite basic, but what else would you expect in this price brand?
Packaging is fairly minimal, but certainly adequate. My only gripe is that this watch is sent out working, so depending on how long it has been sat in storage, you may not get the suggested two years in before the battery needs replacing.
At the time of writing this review, the cost is 89.99, which is good value for what you get.
This watch look very stylish, it has the divers watch look but things like the bezel cannot be rotated and it does not have an illuminated face so a fashion watch really.. That said water resistant to 50m so definitely safe in the pool or sea on your jollies. I assumed Sekonda was made in Russia but it is now designed in Britain apparently with, according to the web, Japanese movement assembled in China. The build quality is nice with a chunky strap with leather on the inner surface. It has a simple stop watch facility that has second, minute and hour dials. 24h max duration, it is started stopped and reset using the top and bottom two small buttons. It came set to bang on the right time in a lovely windowed box so you can see the face. Looks great on.
This is a nice looking watch from a range which has six other broadly similar designs, but with different straps or bracelets and different coloured faces. I got the black/black, which has a black face and a black leather strap. The strap is 22mm and is quick release, so can easily be changed if you fancy different looks.
The hands and simple, single line minute markers are rose gold coloured, which I think looks pretty smart. They’re not luminous, though, so you may struggle in darkness, although they do seem to pick up any available light and glint easily.
There are three small dials on the face – seconds, minutes and 24 hour. There’s also a date window, should you want that. The seconds and minutes can be used as a stopwatch or timer, using the upper and lower buttons on the right of the dial to start and stop it. The 24 hour dial seems to just confirm if it’s morning or afternoon, assuming you’ve set the date correctly. You need to access the instructions online, using the supplied url, and search for model 30017, then you can see how to set everything.
The case is stainless steel, and the bezel surround is black with tachymetre numbers on it, but I’ve no idea what that means. Given that the watch is only waterproof for swimming, rather than diving, I guess this detail is more for show. The watch face is quite large at 45mm. I have narrow wrists for a man, but am happy to wear this, so it’s not too large, thankfully. The battery is meant to last for two years, but I find that they often last longer.
I like the watch and feel that the price is very reasonable for what you get. Given the wide range of looks available and the ease of changing the straps, this seems a decent buy for everyday use or even as a dress watch.
This is a really nice quality, smart and contemporary looking chronograph watch, which being Sekonda, I expected to be good quality, and indeed it is. This is a very comfortable watch to wear, not overly heavy, but not flimsy, and quite slimline (not too chunky like some). There are a choice of strap options, this one being leather. The strap is certainly also good quality, but to be honest, I prefer metal straps. The strap has a good amount of adjustment.
Sekonda are a reasonably quality end watch brand, but at the less expensive end, making this great for smart / casual wear, and suitable as a day to day watch, since it’s not overly expensive It certainly couldn’t be described as being cheapo. It looks and feels decent. Styling is chronograph, with working functionality (up to an hour chronograph, with per second accuracy, 24 hour dial, and date window).
This Watch has a clear black (analogue) face design, with inner windows for the date, and chronograph dials. The watch face is easy to read in good light, but a little trickier in poor, since there is no in-built back — light or luminous hands, like many have, which is slightly disappointing.
The presentation box it came in is pretty rubbish, and ill-fitting. It is really tacky, with a flimsy clear (well, clear-ish.) thin (little more than) cellophane window. Where it’s so ill-fitting, obviously when packed, the crown had been pushed in, since the watch was working. Therefore, if the watch has been sitting around in a warehouse, the life of the battery will be a lot less, before you need to change. If buying as a gift, and you want to check before wrapping etc; you’ll find it nigh impossible to get back in the box, which being so flimsy, just split apart.
Th watch has date function, but isn’t perpetual calendar type, which means you regularly have to correct the date. If I’m honest, I’d sooner it didn’t have the date at all if not perpetual. There are no instructions with the watch — you have to download them. That’s not really an issue, and common these days, but they aren’t the best instructions, and are generic — not specific to this watch model.
This watch is water-resistant to 50m. you won’t have to worry about taking it off in the shower, bath or when swimming etc.
It’s good to know that since the the breakup of the Soviet Union, Sekonda no longer has Russian ties. They’re British designed, made in Asia. If these were still in any way connected to Russia, then I wouldn’t wish to have, but they aren’t now (for many years)
In summary, this is a smart looking watch that seems quite well-constructed. It is nice quality, and reasonable value, but no light button or luminous hands, which is a shame, and rubbish presentation box. The calendar is old school, non-perpetual. Decent strap.
I really hope that you have found this review helpful
I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to take ownership of this excellent watch.
I have always been a fan of this style of watch and cannot stress enough what great value for money this watch actually is.
I chose the black face with copper numerals and fingers and a chrome strap.
It looks simply stunning!
I like the large face and weighty feel to the watch.
The strap has a complex clasp assembly. There is no chance of it coming undone accidentally.
I like the arrangement and Seconda stamped into it.
I like the timer action and the date view.
The timer has its own reset and start/stop buttons. These function well and don’t stick out too far.
Importantly it keeps time and has a two year battery life.
Silent operation.
On arrival your watch will arrive in a fabulous presentation box with inspection window and on a padded cushion.
The watch face is covered with a film and paper strips protects the brushed metal strap.
Got this for the hubs as it is simple to operate and doesn’t light up or bleep at him and no ‘app’ needed to keep the time set accurately.
There is no alarm function.
This is a very decent looking mens watch.
The case is stainless steel.
It has a leather strap (imprinted ‘leather upper’)
The fastening is a buckle.
There is a small window which displays the date only.
Setting the time is via the main button (crown)on the end which can be in 3 positions depending what is being set.
You need the chronograph to be in non operation when setting the time.
Pull out the crown to set the date (you cant set it between 9pm and 1am as it is set to already turn over to the next day)
Pull it further out to set the time.
Push it in when finished.
The chronograph/stopwatch can count min /sec/hr in the 3 little round windows and is able to time upto an hour.
There are two further press buttons to set and operate this feature.
You can time normally by pressing just the A button (see downloadable PDF instructions).
Press the B button to zero again
OR
Accumulate several timings by Pressing the A for on and again for off without pressing B in between.
When finished with, press B to Zero
You can also do split times.
Press A to start and B to stop
Press B again to use the time set.
Press A when finished with
Press B to zero
This watch is water resistant to 50 meters.
According to the instructions, that means you can bath and swim while wearing it .
There is a 2 year guarantee card.
This is tiny and meant only to show a date stamp from the vendor and the web access address for downloading the instructions.
The guarantee doesn’t cover accidental damage or that caused by misuse or tampering.
Neither does it cover general wear or the strap or bracelet
All in all a robust and reasonable quality waterproof watch without too many bells and whistles.
Comes in a cardboard presentation box
This is a great watch, Sekonda is a great brand and great value for money. The watch is waterproof, and is very nice to look at. If you look at the numbers on the watch face you can read what time it is. 10/10 would recommend.
Sekonda continues to make great quality watches, but on a site like Amazon, it is very easy to confuse flashy looking, much cheaper Chinese watches with a watch like this, which is in a different league when it comes to build quality, reliability, and resilience. Cheaper watches may claim to have 50 metre water resistance, but you may well find that claim is untrue the first time you take a shower, or go swimming. When Sekonda makes the claim, you know you can trust it.
This is a particularly smart looking watch, and I chose the silver, and black version with the black leather strap, because I didn’t want to have to take another metal strap to the jewellers for adjustment. I am very pleased with my choice, because it looks great, and has a fully functioning chronograph, unlike many cheaper watches. There is also a date window between 4 and 5 o’clock. The watch is powered by a battery, which should last up to 2 years before replacement is necessary. The silver stainless steel, black bezel, and black dial contrast really nicely, and the Sekonda logo is printed just below the 12 o’clock position, is easily readable, and gives the watch an extra feeling of quality.
Yes, you can buy 3 or 4 cheap Chinese copies of a watch like this for the same price as this Sekonda, and they will probably be inaccurate, the finish will tarnish, or fade, it will use more battery power, and is likely to stop working if it gets wet, or suffers minor impacts.
Personally I would rather have one good watch than a collection of cheap ones, and therefore I think this Sekonda Chronograph is well worth the money. One minor gripe, they should ship these with the winder pulled out to save the battery, because depending on how long they have sat on a shelf in the warehouse, the battery may need replacing in a lot less than two years.
