Fantastic little radio with really clear sound. Volume can go quite high too. Easy to tune and transport. I chose the white colour and it looks fab. Very neat product and possibly the best radio I have had. There’s also a headphone socket too.
Looks neat and good sound for such a small radio. 5 presets which is enough for us.
Very easy to set up and programme favourite stations. Good sound quality. Would highly recommend for the price.
I live in an area that caused problems for my previous radio (am/fm, not DAB). Reception was poor on the few stations it could pick up. This often resulted in it being switched off. This unit gives clear sound from many stations and is an excellent background music source. If you don’t expect hi-fi quality and nightclub volume then you will not be disappointed.
ice compact radio good sound and easy to set up
I bought this radio as a Christmas present for my wife who likes to listen to one particular station well now she can clear easy tuned and she has many more stations to choose from. Very happy with it, small size is perfect for her to use anywhere. Both of us really pleased with it.
Great having 5 pre-set channel buttons. Just one touch rather than trying to tune it in each time. Aerial a bit flimsy and bent on first retraction but not always needed anyway!
Excellent Sony DAB. Radio. Easy to use .
Sleep timer excellent.
Volume not very high only grumble.
Quality sound Buy !!!
Perfect for my wife, who has Alzheimer’s but can understand the device’s operation.
This product is fabulous it is great and easy to use. It works perfectly well.
My wife needed a small DAB radio for the kitchen. Sony’s reputable brand quality fitted our bill nicely. It is living up to expectations. For sure its not super loud and perhaps a little “tinny” in sound reproduction compared to Hi Fi units, but as a fairly inexpensive and easy to use portable radio then it is plenty enough for listening as a background audio source for a domestic kitchen.
This is a smart little radio purchased to replace a Sony radio, which has been in the family for years and is just being downgraded to the garage! It’s a good looker – in white – and has a good sound for its size and price. We are certainly pleased with it. I looked long and hard and decided this was the best value for a battery radio for the bathroom with rechargeable batteries, it’s proving a good choice.
I bought this radio as a present for my sister, so I don’t have first-hand experience of it, but she says she is delighted with it. She says it’s easy to use and she loves the styling of it.
Small radios never have the highest quality sound because it is not possible in a small cabinet. However, this does a good job and is very effective and loud enough to work in the bathroom. Neat and compact.
At first bought the cheaper ‘Histon’ on recommendation by an organisation because I needed to access stations on DAB plus. However the volume control was faulty and build quality not as expected.
I returned the ‘Histon’ and decided to pay twice the price for this Sony. Worth every penny.
The sound quality is great, easy to use, however make sure you press ‘enter’ once you have scrolled through to your selected station. The 5 pre-sets are great for quick access to your favourite stations, the screen looks quality and the radio is well built.
I chose white because it is mainly for the bathroom.
Excellent all round.
It’s a good looking radio and great for the bathroom. However it has very short battery life and in the UK using the mains adaptor is not an option while showering. If it had a rechargeable option it would be perfect. Reception is good, sound is adequate and being Sony it should last longer than the poor quality Robert’s radio it replaced – also from Amazon.
I was very pleasantly surprised to find this radio (for my bedside) so easy to use, excellent sound quality, lights swiftly going ‘off’ so no distraction from sleep
compact and attractive to look a
Mum has altzheimers. She wanted a radio. This was selected because of ease of use and good sound quality reviews.
The radio has exceeded my expectations.
I quickly set up the radio for mum, including the One Button Station Pre-sets. (Five of them on the top of the radio).
Basically there is an On/Off button On the top. Then five buttons for the Station Presets. Then a lovely volume button. An ariel on the back for FM signals.
There is an easy to use tuner, though mum will be unlikely to use this.
An addition is dual Mains & batter use (Three AA’s IIRC)
Every day when I phone mum, the radio is on in the background and mum often answers by saying:
“Good afternoon, Classic FM radio here. We hope that you are enjoying the show!”
Mum totally loves using the radio. It has enhanced her life.
I was not expecting it to be this positive for her.
If you have a family member with Altzheimers, and they want a radio, I recommend this one.
For anyone else wanting a radio, I equally recommend this radio.
This radio sits on my bedside unit. I use it predominantly with ear buds. So far, I’ve only used it with Duracell batteries, and it is proving very economical. Easy to operate, especially by touch in the night, my only quibble is the brightness of the display, and the absence of adjustment, either in brightness or duration. All in all, an excellent product.
Surprisingly good sound quality compared to the previous radio i replaced which also connects to hifi (fm is real time, not recorded loop for radio station i like)
Also, it has batteries !! Which i didnt appreciate, i wasnt sure if it had or not. So bonus, portable sound when you eed to sit on the balcony and chill.
sound is what you might expect, limited by speaker
its REALLY tiny, much smaller than you expect!
Wanted a DAB/DAB+ radio for the kitchen. This was a great choice for myself. Easy to set-up (it practically does it its self) and use. Nice little LCD screen displays the station you are on and what track is currently playing. Volume is ample enough for my needs. A little bit on the pricey side, compared to other models, but happy I purchased it none the less.
I cannot fault this radio, lovely small compact size that looks great in my kitchen, great sound and reception and a large choice of digital stations to suit all tastes, I cannot comment on the sleep timer as I do not use this function, also I do use it in the garden with batteries while I am doing my jobs, perfect.
I bought this as a bedside radio, to replace a previous Sony FM/AM portable that I had had for over 30 years. The radio was easy to set up and tune, and the sound quality on both speech and music is excellent for a unit of this size. The radio displays the RDS station name and radio text. There are, however, a few annoying features and limitations:
– To disable or re-enable the wake-up timer (for example at weekends) requires five or six fiddly key presses. My previous radio required just one press of a button
– The wake-up timer will *only* function if the mains power supply is connected. So useless if you’re somewhere with no electricity
– There is no “snooze” function
– I had hoped to be able to to read the time if I woke up in the middle of the night. However, the backlight is far too bright to leave on at night, and without the backlight reading the time in the dark is impossible
– Possibly important for some: the radio must be stood upright — the telescopic aerial won’t extend if the radio is laid on its side
Won’t go into detail here, as others have done that… but I bought it as a replacement for my old transistor radio which I used in the bathroom which finally died recently. With that I struggled to keep it on station, and could only put it in one place right by the window to get the channel clearly. The new digital one picked up all the stations straight away, and is happy anywhere in the room. It’s attractive, compact, and I love it! (I’m using rechargeable batteries.)
The ten preset stations are very useful (DAB x 5 and FM x 5). The only slight problem is that if you disconnect from the mains you have to turn on again for battery power. There are quite a number of features in the menu many of which I have not explored as yet.
Love this item. I’ve been after a small radio for the kitchen for sometime. It was so easy to set up. The sound quality is good (I’m no expert on radios but it certainly fulfils our needs). Haven’t used the sleep mode as it’s for the kitchen. All in all extremely pleased with my purchase.
Really pleased with this DAB+ radio from Sony. I have not used it on mains as it last forever on batteries. Other DAB radios I have had in the past last at most 6 hours on batteries. I would say this outstrips even what Sony say for battery life. I must have achieved over 30 hours.
The station memory works when I change the batteries even if I leave it over night with no batteries in and not on mains. The alarm clock does not work on batteries but I knew this before I purchased.
Sound is good for what it is and I run it through a Bose connected speaker which is excellent. Picks up many more stations than I have seen on any previous radios I have owned.
Great buy cannot go wrong.
A great little portable radio. Bought it for my elderly parents: It needed to be easy to operate, have a sleep mode, sound decent and be light weight. This radio ticks all those boxes at a sensible price. The sound could be a little better but for its size is perfectly acceptable (and better than a PURE portable that I have)!
My parents use it regularly and seem genuinely happy with it.
Be very careful with the aerial on this radio if you press it slightly too hard when putting it up/down it will bend and break off!!
That being said, this is a very stylish, compact radio with great sound. I use mains in the bedroom and batteries in the bathroom.
The light up screen is very bright and can be switched off when you go to sleep if you wake up and touch any control it lights up for a time check.
Strangely, the radio alarm is great but then, there is no snooze function. Some people, like me! could switch it off and never wake up in time again.
I can’t understand why such a sophisticated little radio couldn’t have a snooze button?? So 4 out of 5
Great radio. I hesitated for a while but now I have it no regrets at all. Easy to use, visually easy to read and volume has a great range and can be put on really low for late night / early hours background. Only 4 stars overall because it does not have an inbuilt charger for rechargeable batteries but not a big deal.
All the Sony XDR radios are excellent. The model that is larger than this one is beautiful to look at and has wonderful sound. The smaller model to this one is a little wonder, and is great for travelling with. With this model I think the joy is just that it is so easy to use. This summer I have grown quite addicted to picking up this little set and moving between the rooms and out into the garden with it. 5 DAB presets, 5 FM presets. Turn it on, autotune on both modes on first use, set the presets, RDS on the FM stations. Magic, The speaker is set up for speech, of course, but I listened outside to a live relay of the Schumann Cello Concerto on Radio 3 on it the other night and found the sound surprisingly detailed. It can’t match the larger XDR radio, though. If you are in the mood for instant radio whenever and wherever you want it you will find this ideal.
This is a well designed multi-function radio at an affordable price. A big improvement on the earlier model. My husband is losing his sight and has no problems with it. The function buttons on the face keep them well away from the pre-select station buttons. There are now five of these. The middle one has a small dome, making it easy to select any. The light is optional but comes on anyway whenever you touch a button, revealing the station, time and other details. It goes off automatically after about 20 second after you switch off. A highly recommendable purchase
Sound not as good as my old Roberts Play 10. Has 5 presets instead of Roberts’ inadequate 3. However alarm function will only work if plugged into the mains — WTF? — what if you are travelling, have to catch a flight, are keeping accessory-weight down or don’t have a power outlet handy? Stupid design decision by Sony. At least iPhones have an alarm on battery. As with the Roberts, I like to use 4 x rechargeable AA batteries; Sony has a useful battery meter and low-battery warning. Sony station-change delay of 1 to 3 seconds compared to Roberts’ 1 is irritating. Sony has better DAB reception of weak signals. Could do with a bass/treble control. Very flimsy upper aerial/antenna: retract by thumb and forefinger, not collapsing the end!
The transportable “tranny” type radio has Sony’s usual styling flair and appears to be strongly built. To operate the set there is less button clicking needed than is the case with most cheaper sets. For example, the volume is adjusted by using a cosy rotating knob. Navigation through the station lists is performed by using a strongly purpose built flick switch. The five assignable buttons for favourite stations are simply pressed like any buttons on an analogue set. To my mind, the sound output is first-class for a small portable appliance. By using rechargeable batteries I am able to take the set with me from room to room. Short and sweet: I like my Sony DAB/FM radio. No regrets.
Purchased for My father in law who is blind. This is the second one I have purchased for him. He loves these radios. He listens to the radio most of the day and now has one in his bedroom and one in his front room. He likes the button layout as he finds it easy to switch between the stations. The radio has DAB and FM settings so there is a wide choice of stations to tune into on the presets (8 from memory – or it may be 10). The sound quality is good for this size radio and the set up is easy. All in all I would say that this is a good radio.
