I tried a few of these USB 3.0 to HDMI adapters and found numerous problems with them, including flashing monitors and random freezing. Usually these symptoms would show up with about two weeks. On the HP forums, someone mentioned to try the DisplayLink Certified adapters as they seem to work better. I installed this adapter and then waited, and waited, until more than 30 days had passed to see if this adapter lived up to the claim.
It’s been 49 days and this adapter simply works, without all the glitches I had with the cheaper versions that were not DisplayLink Certified. I’m very happy with this purchase.
I wanted to attach two extended displays to my MacBook Air 2015 (running Monterey) and had a terrible time finding a solution until I came across a YouTube video that directed me to this product. One display was already plugged in to the mini-DVI port. I bought this to plug my 2nd monitor (HDMI output) to my laptop’s USB port. My monitor has a VGA output too but I decided on the HDMI because it was cheaper with faster shipping. I bought an HDMI cable too.
It arrived fast and took me about 15 minutes to set up. I followed the directions and easily downloaded the appropriate driver from the StarTech website. It didn’t work immediately even after I rebooted my laptop which made me worry it wasn’t going to work at all. I then tried opening up the DisplayLink driver file directly from my applications folder. Once I did that, it prompted me to adjust a security setting giving permission for the adapter to access my computer’s video (or something like that). Once I changed the security setting, it immediately worked. The adapter is expensive but I am so happy to finally have two displays!!
My thunderbolt mini 3 only allowed one screen to be paired on the M1 chip, but buying the Startech USB 3.0 to HDMI allowed me to connect my HDMI monitor via USB 3 to the thunderbolt mini with the other HDMI port on the mini used for the other screen. Now I have a 3 screen iMac using the iMac as the central screen. All I had to do was download the DisplayLink Manager and it worked well. Hopefully remains good through future software updates.
After three tries at getting the correct adaptor this was the one which work OK with my Laptop which didn’t have the DP Alt Mode option. So very happy that this adaptor works well with two additional screens as well.
We’ll I am a very happy chappy with this. Couldn’t recommend more!!! Best usb graphics card out there !
I use a Mac mini but require a 3 display , as Mac mini’s only only have a hdmi port and thunderbolt 2, I couldn’t connect my third display with out a usb graphics card.
I have tryed cheaper alternatives and have suffered terrible lag even just when using my mouse.
So being honest I didn’t have high hopes for this product be a USB adapter . But I am absolutely amazing, there is absolutely no lag, handles videos and films perfectly, which is great for me as I use this display to ethier run my CCTV app or OBS Studio.
I can’t say for Window’s , but on Mac, you need to to make sure that the display link driver you “keep in dock” , and set to “open at login” . Otherwise every time you log in you have to open the driver . – but I’m sure I this is something startech could easily rectify with a software update perhaps.
I bought this to run a third screen on my old Mac Mini and later adopted it for use on a Windows Laptop for similar purposes.
It managed very well, I used to watch football streamed via the internet in full screen on a 47″ TV via HDMI and it wasn’t half bad. There was some motion blur, but I dont know if that was the adapter, the stream or the TV.
On the windows laptop I noticed that the CPU usage % would run very high when this was in use whch could be a problem if you are streaming whilst doing other things, but for watching movies with no other activity and for having a dashboard on a big TV whilst working it worked absolutely fine.
Unlike many other adapters like this, it does exactly what it says on the tin – and well. It is rare for me to write a review but just how hassle-free this was to use needed commending.
As a second screen, have this hanging off of the hub on my display to daisy into a second display. Just works for me because that means just one cable.
Followed the install steps (download and install the software before plugging in) and second screen up and running without issue. No visible delays or quality issues compared to main screen connected directly to laptop via HDMI
I wanted two monitors on the desk separate to the laptop display, my parents were struggling with the screen size on the laptop and did a lot of things that having two independent screens would make their lives so much easier (unknown to them) their laptop didn’t have enough ports to run two screens so this little device sorted the issue via a usb perfectly.
It was very hard to find a product that connected with a macbook air 2015 and this is the product! It connects to my Samsung screen pefectly now I have multiple screens.
I use this to circumvent the limitation of two displays on Mac Mini M1. I have the DisplayLink driver installed and this connected to the USB-A port and it detects it no problem. Works just like a third monitor. No lag, no delay, no problems.
Only just unboxed this product, so not time tested yet. Was looking for a solution to the new M1 MacBook Pro only supporting single external monitor. This works the charm, hooked up to a USB-C to USB adapter, allows for the Mac to share to both screens whilst having the Mac screen separate (in essence having 3 screens). Worth the money!
I brought this for my laptop to allow a third monitor on my laptop mainly for text based work. I wasn’t expecting a lot as it is USB based. I plugged it and it worked, no hunting around for drivers or anything (on Win 10). My desktop appeared as expected. I then tried running full HD video, and the results were crisp and sharp. Even when plugged into a USB 3 hub shared with a full HD camera and DAC both of which were in use, the results were good. Quite impressed.
Works perfectly. Gives multi-screen not just screen mirroring. Star-tech’s customer service is also fantastic. Helped me around a few Apple update issues. First class, would not hesitate to buy again.
I was trying to find a way to add a second external monitor to my 2015 MacBook Air. I have a thunderbolt dock, but that will only support a second display if one of them is a thunderbolt display.
I found this and checked with the manufacturer that it supports Big Sur the latest Mac Operating System launched this month. They confirmed that it does. Installation is so simple, download the latest version of the software from display link, install, plug the device in, enable security permissions, check for start up on logon, and hey presto it works.
I could write an awful lot more about this, but its like that well known wood treatment, “it does what it says on the tin!”
The product, does what its needs to, is reasonably priced as the cheaper ones are not Mac Compatible, and it adds an additional external monitor to my older macbook, saving me much more expensive monitor.
Works perfectly! Additional monitor stress free.
The cd does not bring latest drivers for Ubuntu but it’s fine, on 20.04 you will need to get the drivers from the DisplayLink website. All drivers for all Operating Systems are there anyway.
Pros: Win 10 found driver, no problem. I got the second monitor over USB 3. Worked with USB 2 even through USB HUB.
Cons: Win 7 required drivers. Included disk had outdated drivers. After installation, had to update drivers for both Win 10 and Win 7 to get audio through adapter.
There is visible delay on screen connected with this adapter ( no matter if it’s connected to USB3 or USB2. If mouse hovering over desktop application there’s no delay, but if you go over simple internet page, mouse pointer just keep sticking from spot to spot, especially, when it hovers over any link. This doesn’t happen with the same co conditions, but when monitor connected directly to HDMI laptop output. There is no delays in that case. The most annoying thing is when monitor, connected through startech adapte,r could not wake up after sleep unless I physically reconnect it. There was delay at first week or two aster sleep and now this. I would return it, but window of return is closed right a week later after last day of return. I wonder if this company survives on this no return window. I switched to “Cable matters” now. No problems with wake up so far. Screen delay is a bit less.
Works for Mac and not much choice in market if don’t have usb c so very happy I got this to run a third screen. Sometimes need to plug in and out as doesn’t work 100% of the time from boot up. It is expensive but as I already said this works and not much competitio
No fuss, no mess, simply unpack from box, plug in and use – a very simple way to add an HDMI slot on your laptop, that nowadays seem to only come with USB slots! Buy and use, you will not be disappointed!
Well, I didn’t honestly think this would work. I’m running and Earning 2015 13″ MacBook Air which comes with one Thunderbolt port and two USB 3.0 ports. I already have one monitor hooked up to my laptop via the Thunderbolt port, and had been struggling to find any way of connecting a second external monitor. I tried using a USB 3.0 to USB-C converter, and then connecting that to an HDMI adaptor, but this did absolutely nothing. Pretty much nowhere sells HDMI to USB 3.0 or USB 3.0 docking stations.
At over 80 when you add in shipping, I almost baulked at the price. But I was desperate for a two screen configuration as working from my laptop was giving me terrible neck pain and which a laptop screen and a monitor was an improvement, they were both at different heights and really not what I wanted. I paid extra for two day shipping but the delivery ended up taking 6 days; turns out the seller had to change couriers due to Coronavirus and unfortunately chose ParcelForce, the worst company in the business. But Nicola was very quick to respond to the emails I sent chasing up the package and shipping info so kudos there.
Had an initial panic when I found out the drivers that needed to be installed were on a CD (my laptop does not have a CD-Rom), but was eventually able to find the download I needed on the StarTech website. Nothing has broken yet, if it starts playing up down the line I will update this, but as it stand I’m very happy with my (albeit expensive) purchase.
When I received product it give me immense disappointment as it didn’t work in first attempt.
I had it in my drawer for week and booked return but when it rejected to collect I called StarTech for support.

Working a treat on my Apple MacBook (Mid 2012). Running a Dell S2715H Monitor through my Thunderbolt port (via a Moshi Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter) and a Dell P2719H through the Startech adapter – with the Dell P2719H connected to my MacBook via it’s USB 3 chain (to Mac’s USB 2 port) , and the Startech adapter running directly out of one of the Dell P2719H’s USB 3 side ports. Happy to have finally found a 2nd external monitor solution for my old school MacBook! 🙂
After searching severally for an adaptor that converts USB 2 to a graphic port. A stumbled across this product and it works seamlessly. A bit pricey for what it does but works.
I’ve got a 2012 MacBook Air 11″ with macOS Catalina with an Ultrawide 2560×1080 monitor running via thunderbolt to hdmi, using SwitchResX to get the resolution supported. I wanted to run another identical monitor and was recommended this little adaptor to take care of the job. It works perfectly. I’ve now got 2x Ultrawide monitors at 2560×1080 resolution, along with the Mac’s own screen still in use. The install was a little finicky but following online instructions got everything working in the end. Highly recommended.
Had no more thunderbolt port available on my iMac 2019 to connect a second screen.. I got this plug adapter downloaded the display link driver .. and it works but had latency when switching screen with the mouse on heavy duty .. so I only use my second screen to monitor Consoles … but for the value it’s ok
I used this USB32HDPRO to connect a second monitor to my 2015 12 inch MacBook Air. I was using my thunderbolt connector to drive one display monitor (42 inch LG smart TV). I wanted to connect my LG gaming monitor for a second monitor and use my computer screen as a third monitor. It works fantastic no problems at all in set up. It is required, as the instructions say, to download the correct driver. The driver download was fast and easy as the instructions demonstrate. Could not be happier with the setup now. Internet going into USB3 hub and the USB32HD Pro also going into the same hub. The other USB plug I have another USB3 hub with my external hard drive. Many on internet say this is not possible, but they are completely wrong. I use it every day in my small music studio. I am able to slide any item I want to any of the three screens. All three screens were instantly on My MacBook Air in the system Preferences.
I was told by my graphics card provider (NVIDIA) that mine (940MX) couldn’t support 2 additional external monitors + my laptop screen even with an adapter. However I didn’t give up there. Made a little research, came across this little bad boy and now I can work both external monitors independently extending my laptop’s screen.
Highly recommend!!! P.S make sure you follow the instructions that come in the box first!
I tested with several android phones, using a small USB to USB-C adapter, works fine with the DisplayLink android app.
I can confirm it also works with Sony Xperia XZ and XZ1 Compact phones.
Very useful and a perfect alternative to a new laptop when using a cheap laptop. Needed additional screen real-estate and this allowed me to connect a second additional monitor whilst my laptop has only one HDMI port. Well priced.
This has been used 5 days a week for around 8 months – no issue with reliability.
The contradiction between a (lousy) built in Intel graphic adapter and using Adobe Premiere for editing videos is obvious for any videographer. This external graphic adapter simply allows my laptop to do what it is supposed to do, and not using CPU power and RAM to generate graphics, but just calculate :o) In a parallel upgrade of RAM and adding SSD drives, it has made my laptop fly as it has never done before
These items are brilliant if you want to add multiple monitors to you laptop or PC. I have been using these types of devices for years from Startech and these are just an updated version that works with Windows 10 and earlier versions and uses HDMI connection.
You won’t regret buying one (or more) of these.
UPDATE
=======
Just to update this review, I have now bought a total of 4 of these (so far) and have them all running on my laptop with no issues.
Sadly it does only 30Hz on 4K, but for browsing and watching Youtube is fine. I even manage to play few FPS on it, and although performance was not brilliant, I was impressed that it worked at all. Where it really shines is RTS.
In general, great item, and does the job. I’m not sure if 30Hz is down to this item not being HDMI2.0 or my TV, but it works just fine.

I have a mac and with every update the driver doesn’t connect. But with one phone call the team gets me connected everytime. Years later and I’m happy

In general, great item, and does the job. I’m not sure if 30Hz is down to this item not being HDMI2.0 or my TV, but it works just fine.
