Once set up, easy to use and gives good all round assessment of body compositio
The product itself is awesome. I had the previous model of this scale, and I was not let down by the new model.
It works fast and very easy to use and understand the results of each scan, the instructions are super clear.
Great scales – easy to use and detailed analysis. There is an app you can use on your phone which does the job, i.e. it easily records your stats, allows you to graph two different data fields against one another, and lets you set a weight goal. Understanding my body composition makes the extra money versus standard scales worthwhile.
Great item but these scales aren’t accurate (we all know that already) Still nice to see if things are on the right track!
Brilliant scales! You have to accept that figures will change slightly depending on the time of day you take your stats and also your hydration. 5 of my friends have used them and we are all a similar size/weight but different muscularity and the readings have given a great interpretation of our physicality, being different and in line with what we expected. They are very easy to use and seem robust.
This scale is simple, quick to set-up and easy to use. And at the same time, it is much cheaper than the professional gym scales that will provide the same level of information.
I have been attempting to loose fat and gain muscle. These scales make the job so much easier. Also a good all round health check for all members of the family.
I love these scales I use them all the time! My customers love seeing all the different readings and are amazed when they change! They are easy to use and I love that they recognise me every week!
Does what it says on the box. As a personal trainer I look for things that can measure and also motivate. I have found the metabolic age rating on this item has really kick started my clients into taking action. I have a professional set of weighting scales and at first these Tanita Scales weighted much lighter but now seem to have settled and weight the same as my other scales, which is good. I have found you need a good floor so make sure you have a board under the item if on a soft carpet or weigh on hard tiles/surface.
Finally I got one. 🙂
I had my first fast delivery on monday, but when I got it to work, I found out that it was faulty it didn’t give te segmental reading as soon I measure my weight, on the screen came up with lines and soon after switched off, without any reading
I contacted Amazon, explained the issues and without hesitation the sent me another replacement the next day
I sent the faulty scales back in no time and next day I got the replacement
I got my Scale on tuesday, got it to work, and it WoW me big time. It does what it says on the tin
and as I am Study Nutrition and Personal Trainer, this tool is going to be very handy for what I want to do.
I am on track with my weight loss and fitness level and this scale will give me an idea of the results I need
for the price I paid is a good piece of kit to have, and I definitely recommend it to anyone who is into fitness like myself
overall
I Am very satisfied so far with the scales and of course with the service
Thank you Amazon UK, keep up the good work
Firstly this is a good set of scales with a host of body composition readings such as body fat%, bone density, visceral fat, BMI etc. The whole process takes a matter of a few seconds.
To get the most out of the scales you need to weigh yourself at the same time of day and you need to be adequately hydrated. The manual recommends weighing just before the evening meal but I guess that assumes you follow the same routine every day and don’t, for example, have a snack or consume a large amount of liquid in the period shortly before that evening meal. To counter this I tend to wake up, have a drink and then weigh myself after I’ve been to the loo in the hour or so following waking up. With this routine my results have been pretty consistent with only a couple of wildcard readings.
One thing I noticed that I found interesting is that my weight differs if I simply stand on the scales or stand on the scales holding onto the handgrips. I found that holding the grips adds about 300g-400g to myoverall weight – which I guess is what the grips weigh?
Many years back i lost a lot of weight (over 5 stone) and have maintained my weight ever since.
Having said that I’ve never truly been happy and wanted to go one step further and change my body so i wasn’t embarrassed to take my shirt off. I started eating right and exercising regularly but wasn’t seeing the results i was expecting.
I started reading a lot on the subject and it turns out that your body isn’t really designed to lose fat…..out genes see it as a bad thing to be losing precious energy stores and that pound of weight you lose can be nothing more than through dehydration rather than actual fat loss. I was at the gym and noticed the resident personal trainer whip a set of Tanita scales out to use with a client. He then started to talk about body fat, hydration, muscle mass, etc and i was amazed to learn that from a simple set of scales you could learn how your body is composed and therefore understand just what is happening as you train. So i bought these scales and i genuinely can’t recommend them enough.
I have so far lost nearly 20lbs of body fat, increased my muscle mass and best of all my visceral fat (the stuff inside you around your internal organs) has nearly halved.
I now weight myself every week, still eating a healthy diet and training regularly and the results speak for themselves! If you need motivation and want to understand whats happening to your body as you train, you need these scales!
A LITTLE TIME CONSUMING TO UNDERSTANDING THE READ OUT AS YOU HAVE TO KEEP REFERRING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS BUT I’M SURE I WILL GET QUICKER THE MORE I USE IT
Easy to use machine, have had a couple of problems where it doesn’t reset to zero and adds a few ounces on!.. so you need to move it around the floor a few times to get a zero reading.
The item arrived two days later from the date that I was informed but this delay was due to the local post. However when I communicate with DHL I was informed that the code that I was given it was for the convectional post and not for air service, I believe that is something that I have known from the beginning.
The item it is as it was described. It is a professional model and I suggested not to be bought for home use that it is quite complicate to learn to use all its features.;
Body composition scales will be of interest primarily to people working out in the gym, or doing endurance training for running or cycling. They are helpful for those losing weight and checking whether they are losing muscle content by restricting calories, and also the amount of visceral fat. You may remember Dr. Michael Mosley – author of the Fast Diet – having high viseral fat even though he wasn’t particularly large around the waist. I’m gradually returning to training after surgery and I can see that in seven days my weight has increased from 69.9kgs to 70.2kgs. However that small increase is made up of a reduction in overall body fat from 8.3% to 6.9%, and an increase in overall muscle from 60.9kgs to 62.1kgs. I can then see that the biggest changes are in the trunk with 0.8kgs of additional muscle and a 2% reduction in fat. So my return to training is on the right track. Note that although I use kilograms, a small switch on the underside – ease to miss – selects weight measurement in kilograms, pounds and, stones and pounds.
These scales provide 20 measurements that are shown on a screen. Previous measurements can also be recalled but unlike the Tanita BC 601, it doesn’t have the facility to download that data to a computer. If you’re in training you’ll be used to keeping a log and this data will be an essential part of that, so it will need to be copied by hand. It was the absence of a link to a computer that made a difficult choice between these scales and the BC 601, made harder by Amazon significantly dropping the price of the Omron BF511 scales. I choose the BC 545N scales as Amazon were selling them cheaply as it was an opened box. I had planned to set up graphs to show the data; however, Tanita.com (not the UK site) have a free download of Healthy Edge Lite software that can produce graphs easily from the entered body and segmental data.
Measurements are taken quickly and appear to be accurate, if fact Tanita claim that their measurements are close to professional methods such as DEXA. A recent test of body composition scales published in Mens Health Magazine gave them top marks. It can be confusing reading the results as it’s easy to recall previous measurements by mistake, and I had a few choice words to say the first few times that I used them.
They are very expensive but they do meet a need. I find them really useful to determine what has caused weight loss or gain. The high point for me aged 66 was my metabolic age of 51, so I’m sure that they’re accurate!
Consistent readings if measured at same time of the day. Brilliant for monitoring progress of weight loss/muscle building.
Worth it if you’re giving personal training, and doing it on your own.
Bought these to monitor my fat and muscle levels as I decided to hit the gym more seriously and wanted to closely monitor myself to see where I was going wrong/right.
Very easy to set up and has recognised me every time I have stood on.
They feel good, solid quality and are adjustable to show KG/LB/Stone-LB by pressing a small button underneath the machine.
Now for the readings…
The machine takes several seconds to display readings showing the 3 main ones automatically (Weight, BMI and Fat).
At a press of a button it will scroll through the following (in order)…
Weight, BMI, Fat, Water, Muscle, Physical Rating, Bone, Calories, KJ, Age, Visceral Fat.
Then you can also view the following by pressing the corresponding buttons…
FATS… R Arm, L Arm, Trunk, R Leg, L Leg.
MUSCLE… R Arm, L Arm, Trunk, R Leg, L Leg.
My weight has been very accurate I would say, including body weight and bone weight. I have just fluctuated in body weight by a LB or 2 since buying them, where my bone weight has been either 7.6lb or 7.8lb, so I think 0.2lb is not much of a variation to worry about.
Since buying them I have weighed myself every day (bar one or two) my fat levels have seen readings between 14.7% (19/4/13) and 12.7% (17/5/15) in this period so I know it to be heading in the right direction. However, I have seen figures all over the place during this time scale of 16.7% and 12.4% (on the 2/5 and the 5/5 respectively). I could put this to being in different states each time I weighed myself. I try to weight myself at the same time each day, when I get up and after a pee, but working shifts this can mean its 5am or 1pm.
My muscle levels show a similar fluctuation in weight of between 147.8lb (19/4/13) and 151.6lb (17/5/13) and an up/down scale in between.
Its the same with the other weight and percentage readings, they fluctuate, but are constant too, my right side arm is always 1/2lb more than my left side and my right leg compared with my left is always 1lb more with muscle weight and my fat % is always a little more on my left side.
I am not too worried about this fluctuation as the overall readings show an average steady trend of a decline in fat and increase in muscle, which is what we all want.
Weigh yourself everyday and keep a record of it, but don’t worry to much about your day to day weight as its a marathon and not a sprint, so just think of the overall trend.
Talking about keeping a record, its a shame that the scales cant be downloaded (the biggest issue in my mind), you have to keep a paper record of what is happening. I bought a book to do exactly this.
There is also a Tanita app for the iPhone (not sure if available for others) that you can enter the information into this.
This has had rather poor reviews by users, but to be honest I find it excellent and VERY helpful for these scales as it shows graphs of what is happening so you can see at a glance rather than flicking through pages of written records. The main problem for me is that you cant enter st/lb, only lb, so I have to convert my weights to LBs (I am still old school and like to know Stones).
In conclusion they are a very good scale and very helpful, but rather expensive and missing a few tricks (like downloading data).
I would recommend them still.
This scale seems very well built and accurate and I have waited a couple of months to write the review to see if I can live with it, but alas I can’t. After having a Withings scale which automatically sent readings to their website and my phone I just can’t go back to writing things down then manually transcribing them into my fitness software.
If you are a paper and pen type of person, or have the time to enter readings into an Ipad etc. then this is fine for you. If you just want to hope on at the same time every week then look look back at your trends later then this isn’t.
Find out your weight and all sorts of other health indicators you might not enjoy knowing but need to know. I was a bit shocked by some of the read outs but am now highly motivated to manage down some of the less healthy readings and check my progress daily – smart bit of kit for anyone wanting to monitor their weight and general health quickly and easily. The product itself is robust and well designed. It takes bit of getting used to all of the readouts but as a frequent user you get familair quickly.
Well I have had my eye on these scales for such a long time but was put off by the 180 price tag. I took the plunge and ordered them last week, and now they’re in my possession I can happily say I needn’t have worried or hesitated because in my opinion they are well worth the money. As soon as I took them out of the box they looked special and I was very happy with the feel and the build quality of them.
It was pretty simple to set it up and get started. It uses four AA batteries which are supplied and easily fitted. The next step is set the date and time before entering your data into one of four user profiles, which was again very simple and took no time at all. Once your data is in you need to grab hold of the hand set and step onto the scales so it can record all your data, which it will then save to the user profile you just inputted. After this, each time you step onto the scale it will recognise you without you having to get your user profile up beforehand which saves time.
The results on the scale are really comprehensive giving you BMI, total body fat %, segmental body fat % and muscle mass for each arm, leg and the trunk; total muscle mass, bone density, BMR (in calories and kJ), visceral fat rating, body water %, metabolic age and physical rating. Prior to buying these scales I have been taking measurements of my waist, hips, forearm and wrist and then entering the info alongside my personal stats into a calculator I found online to get my body fat but I was never convinced I was measuring right or that the figure I got back was right. Now I have these scales I know I have something I can trust.
Just by reading through the manuals/leaflets that come with it you can see that a number hasn’t just been plucked out of the air and so far the readings have all been very consistent and if I’m honest, if I look at the whole picture and at my own physique, the combination of the readings paints a pretty accurate picture of what I see and what I already know, so it is great to have the info in numbers as it gives a baseline to work from. When I first went on it I was disappointed as my body fat % was higher than I expected and other measures were not as good as I’d hoped so it was a reality check. Metabolic age was a shocker, even though I admit I’m out of shape at the moment and trying to get my fitness back. So anyone thinking of getting these scales just brace yourself for what they may tell you as it might not be what you want to see or hear and as I say it truly is a reality check. However, in my case other results were re-assuring. Even though I was disappointed my body fat was higher than I wanted it to be I was happy to see that my visceral fat rating was pretty low and using these scales has served to motivate me to really continue in my quest to lose weight (and keep it off this time!), get fit and continue to put the effort in with the gym and diet.
I am also impressed by how quickly the scales record all of the data. In a matter of seconds you have a reading. Also, when I ordered the scales I thought they only measured in kg but in actual fact you can get lbs and stones by pressing the button on the back of the scales. Each time you click it cycles between kg, lbs and stones. If you’re not careful you’d miss it and not even realise it was there so that was a bonus find.
I would heartily recommend these scales to anybody. If like me you are really into health and fitness and healthy eating but are a slave to the scales, whose enthusiasm and motivation is easily knocked if you can’t see progress on the scales, regardless of whether you may be progressing in other ways such as losing inches or getting fitter etc and want cold hard facts to spur you on then these are the scales for you, believe me! I was torn between these and the Tanita BC543 but I decided that it was worth the extra money for the hand electrodes and the segmental readings etc otherwise in 6 months time I’d have probably ended up buying these anyway.
So all I can say is go for it, you won’t be disappointed!
EDIT: I should also add the customer service at Amazon is fantastic. Within 7 days of me purchasing the scales the price dropped significantly and they refunded me the difference when I contacted them. So keep an eye on the price before you buy as they do drop sometimes by 30-50 and then go back to around 180, so be aware. Well worth it at 180 and an absolute bargain when they drop in price.
I bought these scales as I wanted to clients to see their body fat loss, rather than worrying about weight loss. However, it also shows them their muscle mass, bone density, hydration levels, visceral fat and the most scary one Metabolic Age. How old there body thinks they are? Great news, they can reduce this if they reduce their body fat and visceral fat and increase their muscle mass and hydration levels. Excellent buy.
This is an excellent product, well worth the 180. It gives wt, and segmented per cent fat and muscle as it says it would. BMI is a new feature. It MUST be used on a flat and solid surface and MUST be used when one is well hydrated. For me this means a body water of 54-55 percent. If measures taken when dehydrated, ie on arising in am, then measures (except weight only) are inaccurate. The scales are highly reliable if hydration is controlled. (I believe this is because the bioelectric current cannot distinguish fat from muscle and bone unless there is sufficient body water.) My only complaint is that this particular version is so new that the manual and charts included are slightly out of date.
