A good sized bag that slides on to a rack that you find out later is sold separately for about 20,
However the bag is a sturdy very well made,
The top expands if necessary to accommodate extra items, waterproofs, snacks etc.
I was surprised to see the bag is fully lined further adding to the quality.
As for how long it will last only time will tell, That will be a lifetime I hope!
I should point out that it was not possible to fit the rack without some alterations because the rails on my built in bike rack are too thick for the clips, hopefully not everyone would have that problem.
Muy buena compra y a pesar de que su tamao, tiene un espacio aceptable para guardar cosas
Many reviews already for this Topeak trunk bag, I just want add that my bicycle helmet DOES fit inside and zipped closed as long as the upper extension portion of the trunk is unzipped for maximum room. Some bicycle helmets may not fit but mine is a pretty standard size from a popular maker, most will certainly fit inside.
I have used Topeak trunk bags for years. This being the 5th I’ve bought and the 4th one with the mtx system.
Slide onto a suitable pannier rack, and it locks in place with no chance of moving, never mind falling off.
They are fitted to 4 of the families’ bikes, and I gave one to my eldest son when I gave him one of my bikes.
Depending on model they hold enough kit for a long day ride including rain jacket, food and spares. They also come with a shoulder strap so you can carry it easily when off the bike, should you need to.
Highly recommended from me. Things are only expensive if they aren’t suitable for their intended purpose. These bags are very suitable.
Love the fact that it’s so easy to attach to the specially designed rack.
It’s smaller than my previous top-box, which was part of a very good Ibera kit comprising two panniers and a clip-on rack.
But that kit doesn’t fit my new e-bike, so I’ve had to find the best compromise solution. This one and its associated bracket work almost as well; except that I’ve had to use cheaper (not so good) panniers with it.
The rack system, the stuffiness and portability….thise guys really jnow that stuff. Beat system out there.
I bought the soft tail M2 rack because I’m on a VIVI Electric Mountain bike and I wanted to use it as a commuter as well. The Topeak M2 is the only rack which makes sense. Seat post racks are for the birds. I soon discovered this rack was special in that it has a special track for their line of bags! And that’s what led me to select this one.
I got a lesser-priced one that looked just like another one that had panier bags that unfolded from a zipper pouch on each side of the bag. The one I bought didn’t have that feature. Just as well… I’m riding a soft tail mountain style bike.
I used to strap my lunch bag to the back of a seat post rack and “it worked” but took around 1-2 minutes of work to get it mounted securely and another 1-2 to remove it. Royal pain. This bag holds about the same amount as my lunch bag. So I’m good to go … better to go really.
Only wish would be “make one that is suitable for being a lunch bag!” At the moment I simply put my stuff in a sturdy plastic bag (two actually) and then drop that into the bike bag. It works. But if there was a spill, I’d be less than happy. But if there was a hard plastic insert or something like that? “chef’s kiss!” Would be awesome.
It’s so fast to get in and off. It holds what I need to take to and from work. It helps me choose the bike over the car more often.
This is a great bag with so much space and enables me to ditch the rucksack on my commute so I’m cooler on the bike during the hotter summer months although it would be better if it was waterproof rather than having to use the hideous looking cover which I won’t be buying as it looks like too much faffing around and I’ll probably go back to using a rucksack during the winter. It loses a star because it rattles like made due to the loose fit on the rack which was driving me mad so I fixed it by putting the piece of card that came with the rack underneath it which has pretty much solved the issue. I’d recommend this to anyone as you could use it year round so long as you don’t mind the cover that you have to buy separately which I think should be included considering how much you have to pay for it but still regardless of this I think it’s a great bag and I’m glad I brought it.
Absolutely love this bag. I use in place of a backpack now when I’m not riding the bike.
I didn’t want to spend the money for this bag or the rack mount that it requires. I looked at a variety of other options on Amazon and even bought one of the less expensive and slightly smaller units available.
In the end, this bag is very high quality and the rack system with its slide in track and locking system is super convenient.
I purchased the bag version that does not have panniers. This allows more storage in the side pockets. I am able to get all my essential tools including my portable air pump all into one side pocket. The other side pocket holds my wallet, phone and personal items. I placed my small cable lock in the rear water bottle pocket because I rarely carry extra water.. There is an interior pocket in the lid of the center storage area that holds my bike keys, lock keys and other small items.
The center storage compartment is very large and extends even taller if needed. Right now I keep a spare tube and a couple other items that use a very small portion of the available space.
The outer lid has a mesh pocket and an elastic laced hold down area. I have not found a great use for this area yet. I do wish the mesh pocket had a velcro seal so I could trust any contents to stay in there throughout my ride.
This is my first rear rack and bag and I have found 2 issues that I hadn’t thought too much about previously. First is there is no view of the bag while riding, I can’t turn my head enough to see any of it to make sure everything is okay. The second issue is that I am getting older and it was already getting difficult to mount up by swinging my leg up and over the seat, now I need to keep that leg high enough to clear the entire rear bag and the seat.
I previously used a handlebar mounted bag which worked great, I love having more storage with the new rear bag for day trips or runs to the hardware or grocery store. I really love the handlebar area that has been freed up now that the front bag is no longer needed.
Great offer on this via French store, took an age to arrive but very pleased when it did. This is the version without panniers, which is fine for my use. This bag expands at the top and I can fit a lot of things in it. Very pleased.
Not used the bag yet but happy with quality of it. It seems sturdy and the inside is a great size
I really like this bag and have used it for longer rides on my gravel bike. I mainly put my phone, keys, food and water, and an extra shirt. Note this only works with Topeak racks.
Love the quick connect, the expansion feature and side pockets. Was gift for my partner and I will be getting one with the panniers for work commuting.
Feel like they are great value for the money.
I purchased 2 bags. One for my wife and one for me. They attach to and detach from the rack very easy.
There was some rattling on my wife’s but I believe it was because she wasn’t carrying any weight.
There well built and has plenty of room for what we carry.
I had originally bought a cheap bike trunk bag, that fastened with velcro straps. I gave that a 1 star review due to the short straps, and the hassle to get it on and off the rack. So that ended up in the trash, and I bought this Topeak bax, along with the MTX universal adapter. Great idea, and works like a charm. I can get the bag on and off in mere seconds., with no fuss! So pricey, but since it does exactly what I want it gets and deserves the 5 stars! You get what you pay for, so in this case it is more $$s but a fine bag! Worth it in my opinion!
I love the easy slide-in feature to hold it neatly on bike. Design & size is pretty good, not only it can hold me helmet, but also some small things that I usually carried with me when going out. One important feature it has is the built-in reflectors around really help the safety in dark. Love it.
We purchased two of these Topeak MTX DX bags for our Ebikes. One was perfect, no issues. The other had a missing latch, where it snaps into the Topeak rack. The entire latch assembly, with two screws through the bag, were never installed. It also had the expansion zipper teeth sewn into the side of the bag fabric…so you couldn’t zip the expansion portion. So the design of the bag and the materials are great….but having two major defects in one bag tells me that there is no quality control. Of course, Amazon’s return and replacement was wicked easy and effective, so kudos to Amazon.
Love this back-rack bike bag. I had my bike shop install the over the tire mounting system so it was done properly. I ordered the bag from Amazon as the price was much less expensive than my bike shop.
I fit in a book, Tupperware of fresh cut up fruit, 3 bottles H2o, hand towel, sunscreen, car keys, DL & CC, bike lock, mini-pump, small first aid kit, and cell phone.
Glides on easily on/off locking/unlocking in place.
Had all my stuff bungee corded to my rack. I have an ebike and had been removing everything to lighten it for loading on my platform rack. Had to take apart each bungee. If I wanted to lock my bike the locks were under my jacket and lunch; again had to take it all apart to get to the lock. Now it’s all neatly in the bag and when I get ready to load the bike just slide the bag off. Had considered the smaller one and I’m very glad I chose this one – just right, holds the important stuff and is not bulky.
I really like this bag! I’ve had it for about a month now and use it for work and quick grocery trips when I only need to get a few things. When I use it for work, I’m able to fit my wallet, lunch in a small Tupperware, masks, and two 16-20oz water bottles in the main compartment, and that’s when it’s not expanded. On the sides I keep my hand sanitizer, bike tools, first aid kit, keys and bungee cords. I also keep the divider and shoulder strap in the side pockets when I’m not using them. The water bottle holder doesn’t work well with smooth water bottles – I rode over a bump and my hydro flask went flying. It’ll work if you have a cycling water bottle though. I like that I can attach my rear light to the back of it too. It can be difficult to pull it off the explorer rack. Part of the plastic on the bottom chipped from me pulling too hard but I learned there’s a certain way you have to take it off. I don’t really use the divider. The only time I used it so far was when I bought a hot roast chicken and had to separate it from cold items when I went grocery shopping so it’s nice to have even when you don’t think you’ll need it. Overall it’s a good product and I think it’ll last a very long time.
Need to add a little rubber to where yellow catch fits into rack otherwise it rattles.. No worries though used small piece of old inner tube and gaffer tape.. Great saddle bag good sturdy build plenty of room for 6 cans
I use my eBike a lot about 18000 miles over 2.5 years till it was stolen, locked, but not locked to a post, etc. so the theives just popped it in a truck. The pack went with the bike, but I am buying another one. This one was 120 just a few weeks ago so it is a good price!
You do need the correct rack, so if you don’t have the topeak rack, it is an additional 55 us dollars.
But I had to make a hack. My seat is setback and low enough that the pack presses against it if it’s locked in the normal way. I simply used a couple zip ties to keep it secure and back a little. It works great like that. I don’t need to take it off but it’s easy enough to re-zip tie if I need to, or just let it touch the seat.
I actually have a model I got years ago with the zip out panniers. I was switching it between the two bikes I ride. I wanted one for each bike so I got the smaller one with the panniers. It was so small as to be useless so back it went.
I actually have some regular panniers and wanted just a trunk bag. I was putting my cell phone in the side compartment most of the time anyway. So now I put my old one on one bike, and I can use the zipout panniers, and this new one on the bike I do most of my daily rides on. I love the side compartments and I can use my other panniers if I know I’m going to need them.
I carry my tools and tube in the middle compartment. I actually find the water bottle holder useful for carrying a small spare.
I would really like it if I could use it like intended, and I can on the one bike. But it was easy to rig and very secure. I have extra zips with me just in case.
Exactly what I was looking for. I returned the smaller EX version due to lack of usable outside pockets. This one is a lot more expensive but worth the money since I want to keep it for a long time. It’s also expandable on top (zipper). The hard bottom with track fits the Peak rack. However, we already have pre-installed racks so ordered the Peak adapter which we hope will attach to our existing racks and allow us to use the bottom tracks for mounting instead of the old bungy method. Haven’t received adapters yet (they are en route) so will post more when they arrive. Hoping they can be mounted so we can slide the bag right onto the rack using the track.
UPDATE ON TOPEAK RACK ADAPTER: Works perfectly. Available here at Amazon in the $16 range. Rather than drilling holes, we attached the adapter to the rack using only two strong wire ties pulled super tight. Bag slides on/off with ease and the two wire ties hold the adapter securely to the bike rack. A cheap and successful hack. See photo.
I used this bag on a 40 mile ride. I was able to pack EVERYTHING I needed for this trip. I packed a lunch, first aid kit, tire repair kit, extra water bottle, hat, camera, etc. I also used the extra water bottle holder. My only complaint with the holder is that is needs to be tight. If you go over a bump the bottle could fall out as this did happen to me. I absolutely love the track and clip feature. Putting the bag on and taking it off was super easy.
I’ve had the Topeak rack for years and have just strapped everything to it. Finally decided to get a Topeak pack that slides right on and is secure. This is the perfect size pack. Side pockets are big enough to hold phones, wallet and keys. The center is big enough to pack a lunch or load our farmers market finds in. I was glad to get the one with the yellow inside(just preference), but easy to see anything inside it. The rear reflective tape is a nice touch and adds great visibility. Also came with a comfortable shoulder strap, so we can take it off and haul it with us.
I am a fan of the Topeak MTX mounting system. I have a Topeak rack on multiple bikes. I also have the EX bag, which is very similar. But I like the fact the side pockets are actually functional and can gold stuff. Also, I like that the DX bag has an expanding top which was all the extra room I needed on a 3 day bikepacking trip. The additional bottle holder is also a great feature. The bag mounts very securely and comes off quickly and easily when needed.
My bag is the DX–the larger bag but without panniers. This is a useful and convenient bike bag for around town. I’d write a perfect review if it were not for the the fact that the zipper to the main compartment fails in about two years of five to seven days a week of use. That ought not to happen–I have other gear whose zippers have lasted for over fifteen years of very rough use. I’d rather put the negative last but for the fact that there is nothing one can do about the problem if out of the two year warrantee period. I just called their 800-258-3068 number and the agent confirmed that they can neither repair nor replace my about three year old bag.
But you will get good use out of the bag for two years or so of regular use. It’s got convenient side pockets and a main compartment that’s big enough for a small to medium sized grocery purchase. It has a top mesh pocket that I find useful to take care of overflow (there are stretchable ties to lash a foot long three inch wide item down). There is a detachable strap that is useful if you want to walk around with the bag, for example at a market or a store.
The bag very conveniently slides onto a bike rack and clicks into place so the bag will not fall off and the release mechanism is quick and easy. The bag does not come with a lock but it could be locked to the bike with a thin cable. The rack itself is a special one and requires a separate purchase of about $35 (in 2018).
The picture shows the bag in place on my Specialized Mountain Bike.
If it weren’t for the zipper problem I’d give this bike 5 stars. As it is, I think my 4 stars are a shade generous.
I like this model had the other MTX model the one with the smaller side bags.
Don’t like the ones that fold out from the bag that’s parallel to their tires. Only problem I see and talked to other people about is the snap on models they seem to snap off quite often so I bought a keylock an oval shape one to snap in place on the seat for extra projection of snapping off and losing it, looks like I solved the problem.
I rode for years with a backpack. It is so much more pleasurable to have the back free. I keep all of my repair gear like tubes, CO2 crackers, CO2 canisters, multi hex key, patches, etc, in one side compartment. I keep my phone, wallet, external phone battery, phone charger chord and keys in another side compartment. In the center compartment, I keep sunglasses, headlamp, bike lock, spear water bottles and sometimes a beer or 2. I can keep all of those items and not even have to extend the height of the center compartment. The trunk clips on very well. I have put on over 500 miles since installing it in May and it still looks good and does what I need it to do. Hold stuff. It does not lock on. You can take it with you as it has shoulder straps.
I have owned 2 of these same exact MTX DX trunk bags since 2014. Overall, quality is excellent with the exception of the zippers and associated teeth. The bag handles the sun, rain, etc. and has excellent nylon material for the body. However, the plastic zippers used for the teeth last about 2 – 2.5 years of normal use. I ride everyday and I am constantly loading and unloading the bag to access my bike locks. If the zippers were metal, like the ones used on travel luggage, this bag would outlast my bike. I can only give it 4-stars because I know the zippers will fail in the next few years even with the this slightly redesigned 2017/2018 bag. Come-on Topeak, charge clients $2 more and install better zippers.
So, I bought this for a trip on my Trek DS3, but I wanted the flexibility to use this for small day-trips, and for runs to the gym. I have the Topeak MTX Beam Rack (V type) that has a quick-connect that I stick on my road bike for times when I want to use it, and so now I can get some extra storage when I feel like riding the roadie to a store or gym. I did not get the version with the side panniers as I have Ortliebs, and this has an expandable top in case I need more room. The MTX system is so convenient to add it quickly and securely to whichever bike (vs straps that will always have some level of ‘play’ in them. I just slide my tail-light into the strap and it is ready to go. It does have an adjustable divider in case you have something heavier that may shift during the ride.
I’m not sure I like the handle on top because it makes using the top pocket & cinch system difficult. The previous version had a decent handle on the back, which seemed better. The water bottle holder is a good idea, but if the bottle tends to fall out as other reviewers have mentioned, it’s a waste of weight and space. I haven’t had a chance to test-ride it, but it’s so much like my old version, I think it will work fine. The rigidity is superior to soft-sided packs, and the Topeak track system is far superior to attaching a rack pack using velcro straps or bungee cords.
Took 8 day’s after order date before it arrived, but it was worth the wait in the end. Does what it says on the tin and looks neat on my MTX bar rack. Most importantly it takes the weight out of my back pack and off my back. Nice piece of ki
I’ve been using this bag for over a month now, and have become a fan of it and the Topeak rack system. I have the Topeak MTX Rear Bicycle Basket for shopping trips, but this bag serves well on most daily rides. With the expandable capability, it holds a surprising amount of stuff, though probably not enough if you’re commuting and need a change of clothes, laptop, etc. Still, the main compartment will hold a U-lock, cable, a well-packed lunch, and more. The side pockets will hold things for which you need quick access and the outer wall is rigid so whatever you have in there will be reasonably protected. I’ve only used the water bottle holder a few times and haven’t had any problems, though if your water bottle is too large for the cords to securely wrap around the top of the bottle, I’m not sure if I’d trust it over a bumpy road.
The locking mechanism that secures the bag to the rack has yet to fail me, but I still use a small bungee cord to secure the bag to my seat post as insurance. The loop on the back securely holds my Cygolite tail light, even on the bumpier rides. Overall, I love the ease and speed of removing this from the rack when I leave my bike locked up and the handle makes it easy to carry the bag. A great product!
I absolutely love this trunk bag. I have issues riding with any kind of pack on my back. The side pockets are big enough to swallow a u-lock. The divider in the main bag lets me separate my wallet and smart phone from the rest of the space. And that space easily holds a gallon of milk, or a bunch of bananas, or the door prize from the company picnic. When I’m commuting, I can stash a sweater and more in the main bag. As other reviewers have mentioned, a half empty water bottle and a bumpy road are not a good mix. Your water bottle (or favorite travel mug) will go flying. Other than that, it is the most convenient thing to have on a bike.
I have an MTX Trunk Bag EX, but wanted to try out the DX with the side pockets. The pockets are great for tools, wallet, phone, snacks, etc.
The down side of the DX vs the EX, is that on the DX, the handle is on top, and you you cannot strap a sweatshirt or beach towel on top, like you can with the EX. This DX has a mostly useless water bottle holder in the back instead of a handle. You cannot reach the water bottle while riding, and most bikes already have a bottle holder.
I found that I could add a strap I bought at Amazon (BootYo! PackYo Packstrap cinch/ lash strap with QUICK RELEASE latch) to the back. Pull out the water bottle straps and insert this strap through the buckles. Now you can hold your towel or clothing where the water bottle is. You don’t need to cut anything, so you can easily go back to using the water bottle if you like. Photo attached.
Note: I had the older EX version of this bag for a short period before realizing it was too small.
This bag is a pretty solid addition to my suite – the other panniers I have are the Arkel Grocery Bag and the Ortlieb Commuter QL 3.1.
I use this bag when I know I don’t have to take my computer to or from work on a particular day.
Pros:
Good size. Fits a change of clothes for work, a large lunch, a small notepad, bike tools, and phone/keys/wallet in a small space.
Side pockets actually hold things on this model compared with the EX version’s tiny mesh siding.
Mounting seems secure.
Reflective strips are very bright.
Cons:
Mesh on top not exceedingly useful.
Water bottle holder doesn’t hold smooth bottles well even when adjusted; I’ve lost a kleen kanteen.
This model’s addition of a water bottle holder removes the strap that makes it easy to take off the bike. It’s now a bit more awkward to slide off the rack if the rack isn’t perfectly straight (my super tourist DX rack came with a bit of a bump in the middle).
If you have a Topeak Explorer rack or any rack without a lowered side rail, this thing will be too wide for you to use this and another traditional-mount pannier at the same time. Ortlieb QL racks will be fine, however.
Neutral:
Zippers don’t inspire confidence based on other reviews and looking at it, but I haven’t had any problems yet.
Overall: Worth it for its convenience. I can feel how light my bike is when I use this rather than my full side panniers, which is nice.
Great for day trips or day rides where you want to bring lunch.
Some small issues depending on what types of hardware/water bottles you already own.
