Used this to replace the existing HDD on my slow laptop, it has made a very noticeable difference, everything loads a lot faster.

A good cost effective hard drive to a Lenovo Ideapad 100s. Windows 10 installed using the Microsoft media tool prior to installing the new HDD. The original 26Gb HDD became additional storage. Highly recommended.

There are better SSDs on the market for sure, but not many quality branded SSDs that beat this for value.

If you are running an ‘old school’ mechanical hard drive in your PC, this will change your life. Once an SSD is installed you will boot quicker, and the general running of software is snappier all round.

I trust Western Digital with my data, I’ve been using their products for years, talking of mechanical drives, I still have some of theirs that have been running 24/7 for nearly a decade.

Well packaged and delivered quickly, seems a little flimsy but good for the price, installed into a PS4 so didn’t need top spec speeds (pointless as PS4 has a limited speed anyway) Working great and plenty more room for games/saves, thickness os great as fits in a ps4 with no issues. May consider these for ext ssd’s if reliability holds out.

After upgrading from a hard drive, boot times increased to some pretty darn good speeds along with the overall OS being snappy. Other than that simple, budget friendly, maybe not if you’re the type to work with larger files than 10GB every hour other than that if it fits the budget it fits the budget.

For me this WD 2Tb SSD was a fantastic option, as an upgrade for my Laptop and worth the money. Even though I bought and installed the WD GREEN SSD’s for what I needed this SSD for, mainly gaming and fight simulators. Then adding this SSD into my Lenovo IdealPad 500-15ISK laptop gave me fantastic performance increase. Where games took 5 – 7 minutes to load, on a aging HDD. This same software loads and is playable, within 1 -2 minutes. Which is better measure of performance, rather that 200/300Mbps read/write times. Also added benefits swapping to this SSD gives me, Upgrading or applying software on my laptop, is much a faster, backing up my disk contents is faster, remote or network access to disk contents, much faster.

I just wish I had done this upgrade a few years ago. If you are currently on the fence around purchasing this product…….then don’t be, it is worth it. Trust me when it comes to every-day performance, then WD Green is a good as, WD Blue and will give your old Laptop or PC a new lease of life

I bought this to replace a HDD in an older laptop and it worked perfectly. I used Macrium Reflect to clone the disk using a USB to SATA cable I already had. It was a fairly simple process although I had to take care when cloning as the old HDD was 1TB so I had to adjust sizes but that’s all fairly easy.
After cloning and swapping the HDD for the new SSD the laptop booted normally and ran quicker.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFor most people buying a budget SSD drive, this will probably do just fine.

But not everybody will be happy so bear in mind the speeds I measured:
500MB per second reads, 130MB second writes

Installing games or copying large files onto this SSD isn’t super fast (writes are comparable to an mechanical drive).

However, once you have installed everything (Windows, or games) then loading will be fairly quick.

If you plan to write large files to this drive regularly (video files or whatever) then it is not a great option.

This is why you will not see a “Write Speed” in the product description above, it is not missing by accident.

I purchased this back in June 2019 and it is still going strong today. It was extremely cheap, and for the money, it’s pretty damn good. If you want to breathe new life into your old computer or laptop, but don’t want to blow out a lot of money, then this is a valid option. Although I am concerned about the later reviews of this product, but I can honestly say that I have never had any issues with it, and it’s still as fast as the day I got it.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersFirst off if you wish to boot your OS off this SSD go and get the WD Blue SSD for a few pounds more.
Basic simple SSD here, I boot my OS off it but it lacks its own built in RAM which would normally contain a map of where your data is saved. Instead it’s saves on the SSD itself so it just takes that slight bit longer to load up my OS than a WD blue.

Regardless it came and I banged it straight in no messing. Had to move to sata port 4-6 as 1-3 were for disk drives, once I did that it ran at full read/wright speed.
Ive had it in about 2 months now with no issues what so ever and it is significantly faster than my old HDD, I bought it in a pinch and it is well worth the money but I will get a Blue in future for reliability and that little bit more speed.
I never knew this before I bought mine so maybe you should know just so one day in years time your wd green doesn’t eventually end up as non degradable waste.

Very fast, but would recommend going for 512gb or something. Once I had it, and realised how much faster it was, I wanted more space of SSD. Will definitely upgrade in the future. However, this one is absolutely fine for the price. It is a little confusing to install if you haven’t done it before. You might find the screws you need are actually in your motherboard, as in you’ll have to screw the screws out of your motherboard which have been placed there for installing M.2 SSD. Or that there is a tiny screw somewhere in a little bag.

I bought this M.2 SATA SSD about a month ago along with a few other pc parts, I bought this one in particular because of the price it was and how good value for money it looked. After installing it easily into my computer I installed Windows 10 onto it. As the month went on I really liked the WD Green SSD as it sped up my pc massively and was such a good storage device for the price! I have installed my OS and a few games and still have about 40gb left on the SSD which is very good and hasn’t slowed down one bit! Would definitely recommend this SSD for anyone looking to speed up there pc and for extra storage!

This was definitely worth the money. I have a 2017 Dell Inspiron 13 5000 2in1 with the backlit keyboard, it was becoming so slow and unbearable. It had 4GB of ram and a hdd. first thing I done was uninstall google chrome, that alone sped up start up time then I added an extra 4GB RAM so I would have 8GB. That made the laptop feel much faster! After that I thought its able to be faster so I purchased a WD 2.5inch internal SATA SSD to replace the hdd. I now have VERY fast laptop, altogether I spent just over 50 on RAM and an SSD, now compared to spending 800+ on a new laptop it obviously made sense, great buy!

I have to say western digital SSD’s are one of the most consistent SSD’s on the market and this one is no exception. I bought this to put alongside a normal 1tb HDD for a quick performance boost. I honestly can’t recommend these enough. They are reliable and I have been using other WD SSD’s in the past and haven’t had any issues and they come with a 3 year guarantee.

Honestly a quick way to help you upgrade your PC’s and the WD green are a quick and affordable option to do this. Can’t recommend them enough.

Grandma donated her old laptop to our son after she moved onto using a tablet. My Dad has reset Windows before handing it over but when I had set it up it was not very quick. Decided to buy a WD 240gb drive and a usb – sata cable 37.50 all in. Used the WD drive clone software (just google for it) and about 90 mins later the laptop is transformed. Only 30 secs to Win 10 desktop including putting in the login pin. No excuse for him not to join the schools Teams lessons that start on Monday

Nice and cheap SSD, WD HDD have always been in my computers, but I have only started using the SSD’s (both sata and m.2) and I cannot complain.

For the general users use case, the only defining things for me is price and reliability. This ticks both boxes.

I have been a Samsung fan boy since I started using Solid state drives, but the WD Green SSD is more than enough for most people. I have been using these are secondary fast storage and replace drives for laptops.

    I cannot recommend them enough

I’m going to start off by saying I’m exceptionally pleased with this product. A fair few reviews moan about the speed of the drive, and to be fair there are faster drives out there for a bit more money but at this price point, it offered a significant update on the SATA 5400 RPM HDD, in my ageing system.
    In fact, it’s worlds apart!
My computer boots up and is ready to go in less than 25 seconds (including logging in) which is long way off the minutes it used to take. If you have to have the absolute fastest, spend a bit more and go for that but this drive is not slow by any means.
The only real negative I could find was that there is no guidance on installation/troubleshooting, not a problem for me, I know my way around a pc, but it could be daunting for the less experienced.
Have to say that installing the drive, clean installing Windows 10 on it and booting up went really smoothly. It’s a godsend now I’m working at home, setting up for the day takes no time at all.

Used these to upgrade a couple of Geobook 3’s that come with a measly 32GB eMMC drive. Arrived super fast as usual with Amazon. Popped in and secured with single screw. Cloned “hard drive” to SSD with Macrium Reflect (freeware) and changed boot order in the BIOS. Worked as straight off the bat and I’m very happy with my purchase. Got it at 21 and noticed the price is creeping up daily so get one quick. WD Green is good for these laptops as they do not have built in fans so the low power produces minimal heat but still gives good speed.

  21. The Guide Staff says:

Perfect replacement for an ageing HDD, and I would encourage anyone who doesn’t have their OS on as SSD to upgrade, the difference is phenomenal, makes loading times a lot shorter, before it took around 40 seconds, but now down to less than 10 seconds. Easy to install (if you know what you are doing), but there are lots of YouTube videos if you don’t. Even though “cloning” your drive is popular, I would advise re-installing Windows (if that is your OS) using their media installation tool, always the best option.
But great SSD, and has transformed an old laptop!

Opening my laptop case was a bit of a faff but once open installing this was really easy.
I have a gaming laptop but had a mechanical drive in it and noticed it had really slowed down especially on boot up and when launching applications. This plugged straight into my m.2 slot and was instantly recognised. I copied my OS over to SSD and have kept the existing hard drive for storage. The speed of the SSD is fantastic… boots up in seconds and games instantly load well worth it and has made a huge difference to my laptop.

I needed some SSDs for some Raspberry Pi 4s, so SATA SSD speeds are fine for this. Paired them with a Ugreen M.2 SATA USB enclosure and they’ve been running perfectly for months.

Great solution for Raspberry PI 4, as it can run these SATA SSDs at full speed and power them quite happily over USB. Massive speed difference over using an SD card… and you get the reliability of an SSD (I moved from an SD card in my PIs to SSD as I was using disk write heavy apps, and had an SD card fail on me)

Thanks to this SSD I’ve been able to upgrade my old HDD-using laptop – which was becoming unusably slow to startup every time I turned it on – and its been given a new lease of life. Excellent value for money!

On the flip side, I’m not expecting this drive to last very long – the more expensive WD Blue drives are more reliable, apparently. However, I don’t keep any important data on the drive – its just a gaming/browsing laptop – and I still have the original HDD to reclone a new SSD from if I need to.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI ordered this product on a whim, whilst completely hammered. In the cold light of my hangover, I wondered why would I need such a tiny drive? It doesn’t even come in a wee box thing like normal drives do. It must be terrible, I thought, whilst seamlessly and easily plugging it into my motherboard and attaching one screw.

I decided to reinstall windows 10 and holy heckbiscuits BatFeld, every function ever was seemingly instant. Boot in under 9s? Are you mad? How can one make a cup of tea in under 9s? :O

Re: Title. This is one of the most significant changes I’ve made to my computer and much easier to install and utilise than I would have thought. Possibly my most satisfactory purchase on this site to date.

I have been a fan of Western Digital hard drives for a long time, their spinning disk drives are the most reliable I have found over the last 20 years. I trust their brand.
Now venturing into their SSD’s I have, so far, found them to be equal to their forebears. The drive specs are what they say, but most important is the reliability.
I have had one SSD drive fail on me in recent years, I know it can happen with SSD’s, it wasn’t a Western Digital though. I currently stick with their brand exclusively, I own a lot of their drives and they are without doubt the most reliable I have found. I’m sure there are other brands with similar virtues (NOT Seagate!) but I will be sticking with what has worked for me so well.

Golden Review Award: 49 From Our UsersHaving purchased a good value laptop for my son to use for schoolwork, we found that the 32GB of storage, whilst good for doing the basics and his school stuff, just wasn’t enough for things like backing up his photo’s from the phone and general storage of programs etc. Hence this purchase.
This is a pretty phenomenal product for under 29. It has increased the storage that’s available by over 7x. It took less than 5 minutes to fit, initialise the new drive and be up and running.
If you are at all wary of installing your own M.2 SSD, don’t be. As long as you get the right size and type, it’s a doddle. Watch my video to see just how quick and easy it was to install. A big recommendation
The only thing I will say about this WD Green, is that it is intended to be low power. So not the fasted SSD in the world but will also conserve the battery on you device….

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for expanding my sons Laptop storage!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNot the fastest SSD on the market, but for the price, its a must for older systems. I have fitted lots of these to older systems from 5 to 7 years old, and used them as windows drives. Basic speed is only twice as fast as a good HDD on sequential reads, but on random is ten times faster. This will banish the spinning wait wheel on windows and make your older PC much more responsive. Easy to install, just needs a standard SATA power and data cable, and if there is no space on the mainboard just unplug the DVD and use its cables.

Either Windows didn’t like the SSD or Windows is just a spoiled and angry child that refused to work properly.

After about 4 reinstalls and tweaking in bios, I got everything up and running and it’s smooth sailing now.
Didn’t have those problems installing an M.2 Drive or a Sandisk Extreme Pro a year ago so again, not sure if it’s just this one that windows didn’t like.
With that said, I’ve used and installed a tonne of WD HDDs over the years so I wouldn’t dismiss this series just cause I had problems with this one drive. Give it a go and very likely you won’t have any issues.

Very happy with performance and price/gb.

I wanted a cheap low power drive that I could run from a small SBC for extra storage without needing a seperate PSU.
This drive has done the job well.
Ok so it’s nowhere near as fast as my NVME drives in my main PC but its soooo cheap and used for extra storage for games or in my case just to store code im working on this is a bargain.
It would make for a superb cheap boot drive for a HTPC or similar system as its very low power and obviously silent.

Had the drive from december last year and have to admit that it was one of the best decisions I made. Its fast compared to my previous one(regula hdd). I cannot go in advanced details but have to assure you everything is ok with it. Mention: i never move my laptop around, keep it only in one place.

I just cannot believe why did i wait so long to get an ssd?? Its so cheap, incredible.

I have now purchased quite a few of these drives. The ‘normal’ spinning hard drives in laptops and desktops are the main bottleneck that makes a computer slow. Once these are installed the system will be much faster to use AND to startup. I don’t really understand why manufacturers still supply computers with the old type of drive. You don’t get as much storage space for your money with a Solid State Drive but the compromise is more than worth it!

One thing to bear in mind is that i have tried ‘cloning’ my old drives to this SSD [and other SSDs] and it is problematic, so i would always recommend a clean install if you are going to be using this drive for your operating system.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this Solid State Drive for my Tell gaming desktop PC. Whilst it wasn’t easy to install physically, the end results are extremely pleasing. I basically made a back-up of Windows 10 from my existing HDD and then reinstalled a cloned copy to my SSD, so basically making the SSD my main Windows boot device allowing me use my old HDD as a 1TB storage device.
So the beauty of running Windows off this SSD is that it’s increased the overall speed of my PC by 3 or 4 times over easily. It’s fantastic. My PC boots up now in literally a matters of seconds. Games boot up extremely quickly also. So extremely happy with this purchase.
The only downside is that it didn’t come with any little screws required to fix it down to the motherboard. So initially I had to improvise and use a bit of wire. So before buying I would advise checking your motherboard’ s slot for SSD and make sure you have what you need to apply the SSD successfully.

Golden Review Award: 62 From Our UsersBought this device to bring back life to an 8 year old HP DV2 laptop that was struggling with Windows 10.

The device arrived in a standard retail box with a few instruction on the packaging but no software or any USB to SATA connection cable to facilitate the transfer of data and operating system. If you don’t already have such a cable or facility then you may want to find a SSD which comes with this cable and software included.

The recommened software to facilitate the transfer of OS/data to the SSD is AOMEI and is available online. The standard (Free) version is sufficient to transfer the OS and data and will allow, if required, the current main disk content to be transfered to a smaller SSD.

The SSD itself comes out of the box in an unformatted state and therefore requires an initial formating process to be performed. This needs to be done using the “Disk Management” page facilities of windows 10. NTFS is the recommended format but others are available if required. SSD’s can usually be sucessfully formatted using the Quick format method.

Once the disk is formatted the AOMEI software is used to transfer the os and data. This can take over an hour depending upon the amount of data to transfer. Once complete the current main disk needs to be removed and the SSD put into its place. The PC should then boot up on the SSD and work as before.

On my aging DV2 boot up and general running of programmes was greatly improved. The computer also stopped using a memory card used for readyboost as it stated that the computer was fast enough not to require it.

Overall I was very pleased with the result. The PC now runs at an acceptable level for general domestic use.

Other things you may want to consider. The SSD described here is a Western Digital Green. Western Digital also do a blue version. The difference is in the way and speed that data is written to the internal chips. The green version is not as fast at writing big files as the blue version is. Also both the Green and Blue version have a SATA version 3 interface. Old PC’s like my DV2 have a SATA Version 2 interface (compatable with V3) that runs at half the speed of V3. As such fitting a blue to my PC would be of little benefit.

SSD’s have a life (number of writes) associated with them. For most domestic use PC’s this should not be an issue. If the PC is heavily used (ie high graphics video mastering,CAD, etc.) it might also be worth increasing your computers memory (if possible) to reduce the workload on the SSD. Most SDD manufacturers produce software that examines their SDD’s and can determine their health/remaining life. This software can usually be downloaded free from the manufactures sites.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve been using this product since April and has never had any issues with. For what I’ve been using it, which is mining,
it has performed well and 120gb is more then adequatefor it’s purpose.
It is small, lightweight, narrow and thin, silent and above all fast! I can say that I’ve been using WD products for a very
long time and has never let me down nor did it cause any issues even if minor.
Product arrived well packed and in time agreed when making the purchase, price is very suitable if you don’t have a
big budget yet you still hope to get a good performance out of it.
I am personally very pleased with this product and would recommend it as a standalone or an addition to other drives.

A first class drive, runs fairly cool in use, so is electrically efficient. 500 GB is an ideal size for making backup copies, at today’s typical file sizes. Larger drives are more suitable for photos, films and audio storage. Smaller drives are more suitable for ‘boot’ and ‘root’ partitions etc.
We prefer to use 2.5 inch drives, less heat, less noise, less energy and more compact. Will comfortably fit in a pocket for mobile backups.
Mechanical drives do not suffer from limitations on the number of writing cycles and cost less per Gigabyte than faster SSDs. Wear can be reduced for backup drives by switching them off when not needed, also saving energy. We eject our backup drives when not in use and store them securely.

Golden Review Award: 29 From Our UsersUPDATE 4.1.19 (knock 1 star off)
Since using this as a scratch disk and recording, I’ve noticed any footage I record on OBS becomes corrupted and shows significant packet loss and stuttering in game. The SSD is now solely used for editing videos as I suspect that heavy timeline scrubbing may have caused this issue. Note: still a good SSD for every other purpose.

    EDITED 8.9.18 REVIEW
While most people would get this to put their operating system and core programs, I use this solely for the purpose of editing (scratch disk). Essentially, I’m going to put this SSD through its paces. I hate editing on a hard drive since I am bottlenecked by the read speeds, using an SSD as a scratch disk should alleviate stuttering and playback issues.

Since WDs offering is basically a sandisk SSD, I knew that the performance is what I expected. If you are going to get this to put windows or whatever, then I highly recommend this size if you just need something cheap and cheerful, but more importantly reliable. You won’t be disappointed by the boot times either.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersIf you are looking to speed up boot time? you are? great!
With this budget SSD (Solid State Drive) you will increase your boot time to just a couple of seconds instead of the long 30 or so.
while it does have low storage you can buy ones that have more storage however the price goes up.

This SSD also comes with software which you have to download from the manufacturer’s website which gives you diagnostic information on your SSD’s. I would recommend this to anyone out there looking for a faster boot up time and is on a budget!
