This is perfect, with 5TB he can keep lots of games on it.
Really easy to use.
Great ssd to free up space, 100gb (1 game) took 2 mins to transfer and that’s fine with me. And delivery was super quick.
Very pleased with this purchase, although spinning disks are still expensive (I paid 169 for this drive). I needed to obtain a fast USB drive for PC backups. I have not tested this on a console.
The kit is well built and looks Ok if you want it on display. The case has a cooling fan as the drive does get a little warm, but you can’t hear the fan. There are two USB ports on the rear to charge phones, etc. Mine contains a HGST HUS728T8TALE6L4 drive which is a “WD Ultrastar HC320 Data Centre Drive”. And its fast hitting over 260MB/s over USB3.0.
Looks high quality and durable and load times are decent as well. Will def recommend.
Purchased this 12TB drive almost 3 years ago to shuck and use as an internal HDD to my PC. To my amazement, the drive in the encasing was an original HGST manufactured HUH721212ALE604 (helium filled enterprise drive) selling bare for 100 more.
After 2.5 years, I can safely say this drive has worked flawlessly, reliably, speedily, quietly, and very cool; no doubt the best HDD I’ve ever owned.
I’ve just run CrystalDiskMark for this review, with all my desktop applications open; the drive has over 1400+ power on counts, 4000+ hours of runtime, and performance remains as impressive as the day I received it.
Unfortunately I cannot say whether the latest 12TB manufacturing batches contain this exact model manufactured in Thailand, but I felt it was important to review WD’s solid offering given how great the drive has served me for these last 2.5 years.
The 4TB hard drive is a powerful and versatile storage device that provides ample space for storing large amounts of data. With its massive storage capacity, it is an excellent option for individuals and businesses that require a significant amount of storage for their data.
One of the most significant advantages of the 4TB hard drive is its large storage capacity, which can store up to 4 terabytes of data. This makes it an excellent option for individuals and businesses that need to store large amounts of data, such as videos, music, and photos. It can also be used for backing up important files, which is crucial for protecting against data loss.
In addition to its large storage capacity, the 4TB hard drive is also fast and reliable. It provides high-speed data transfer rates, which means that large files can be transferred quickly and efficiently. It is also designed to be durable and reliable, which means that it can withstand the wear and tear of regular use and will continue to perform reliably over time.
One potential downside of the 4TB hard drive is its relatively high price compared to smaller-capacity drives. However, the cost per terabyte is typically lower for larger-capacity drives, which means that the 4TB hard drive may be a more cost-effective option in the long run for those who require a significant amount of storage.
Overall, the 4TB hard drive is a powerful and reliable storage device that provides ample space for storing large amounts of data. Its large storage capacity, high-speed data transfer rates, and durability make it an excellent option for individuals and businesses that need to store and access large amounts of data
Does what it says used for gaming only issue is Xbox pc app does not like installing to external hdd
10.9 is what you get so don’t whinge when you see its not 12 🙂
This is normal
great for storage, massive
For example, gears of war 5 takes a rounds 30 minutes to transfer over or to transfer back onto the external memory.
Battlefield 5/battlefront 2 (both very large games) take roughly that.
Red dead redemption 2 around 115gb takes about 30 ish minutes as well. Sometimes 35, but still. Beats downloading by miles.
Honestly, I’d recommend, and for peace of mind, as hard drives can have issues, I’d buy the added insurance.
Very good addition for my sons new xbox as not much storage, quick to move games across to, to save downloading them all again.. good value good make
The storage itself is ok but it was suppose to come with a code for free 1 month subscription for xbox ultimate. It was an expired code.
Seems to do the job ..needed extra ssd memory as I only had 256 gb installed, and modern games taking evermore memory ( red dead redemption 115gb) an external ssd fitted the bill with 1 tb memory.
Working well upto know ,it does get a little warm but it’s tobe expected.
Thanks Simon J Stuart for your Review here read every Word & its True The Thing here gave Me Creeps in Night while i was Formatting it & PAused it, i have had had nothing but Problems really Disastrous Ones with WDC | Seagate is Working GooD but i think Hitachi really has never Disappointed Me for All these Years! Active Cooling Block Don’t know about that to be Honest its just a Product Designed so Well that makes you Wanna Buy it! Its Really Unfortunate What happenned to your Unit but i with All My Experience & Failures have been Watching / Observing this Thing | So FAr Performance is Okay Except for that Noise, All Tests of Mine seem Successful
Writes to a reasonable speed when used for FTP transfer directly from Google drive using Raidrive software. Using FTP makes it much faster than usual download.
I run userbenchmark and I get performing way bellow expectations, operating at USB 3.1 speed (no idea why and that is why I thought to test with other cables and at another PC)
I have used it and benchmarked it in two different PC’s both with USB 3.2 ports, I have used different cables but results are always the same. Quick google search revealed am not the only one with same issue.
*** I’ve deleted partition and reformatted the drive, copied back the data and now am getting SEQ1M Q8TI 113mb/s Read and 107 mb/s Write. Searching online found out that drives almost full seem to slow down and maybe deleting and recopying the data had an effect similar to defragmenting that speeded up the drive (am no expert, just a theory) ***
I purchased this at a discounted price during a WD global sale, it is frankly staggering value for money. Albeit it’s an ‘old’ mechanical drive, rather than a solid-state affair. I needed some sizable space to be able to reorganize some pretty huge files, it’s great for the job.
WD quote the drive at ‘up to 140MB/s’ – which is fair, I’ve managed consistent 130MB/s sequential reads and over 120MB/s sequential writes. Small file random IO sees these rates drop like a stone as you would expect. But all in all it does well for a drive that is spinning at a reported 4800RPM.
It is a little power-hungry, it certainly wasn’t happy sharing USB power in my (non-powered) hub with other drives, but given it’s own USB port it is more than happy.
Update 03/10/2022: The drive has been returned to WD due to sector fails and ended with the drive being unreadable. Drive was sent back as RMA 3 weeks ago, so far no replacement sent however Ihad confirmation they received the drive
UPDATE 07/08/2022: The drive has had a lot of use 2000+ hours, and it has performed well. I changed my setup and moved away from the RPI4 and am now using a HP 800 G2 Mini I5-5500T which is giving me more bang for buck and I am getting better USB3 speeds, my system is built on proxmox with omv openmediavault virtualised in a VM, and the 5TB USB drive is used to hold media on a ZFS filesystem. I have recently started getting issues with read errors on one sector, this is under investigation to see whether its an actual disk fault or an issue with USB maybe dropping and causing a write issue. So far its only one sector.
The drive isn’t noisy the current temp is 51c according to smartd.
You can’t play ps5 / x/s games directly but you can play last gen and older supported games from the Hdd.
Biggest downside is the noise, its so loud and annoying but also doesn’t stop when you turn your console off, keeps churning away regardless.
If noise will aggravate you then look at the WD Black drives that down need external power, much quieter.
I have now downloaded all my PS5 and PS4 games onto this drive and moved a couple from internal storage over to this drive which frees up space on my internal storage.
To play PS5 games stored on this drive you do have to move them to internal storage which only takes a few minutes compared to several hours it would take to download them, PS4 games can be played directly from this hard drive which I do and they play great with no issues.
If your after external storage for your PS5 this does the trick, as this is the 8TB model the drive spins at 7200 rpm, but 5TB or less drive spins at 5500rpm which will give slower transfer speeds but will still be ok.
Just arrived, plugged it in to use it and low and behold, it holds 4.5TB of storage space rather than the 5TB that I bought it for!
Missleading.
This is a drive that has not been used at all. A fresh clean drive with nothing on it and I get this.
Kinda disapointed really. I hope W.D can respond to this and care to explain why.
If you advertise something, you have to SELL what you are giving.
This is actually a prosicutable offense of false advertising.
Until I can get around to getting a M.2 drive.
Saves me having to redownload from the psn store.
Does the job.
If I had of know I could stick one of these bad boys into my motherboards usb 3 port and it preform the way it does I would of bought one years ago. I got it about a week ago after looking ad ssd drives (already have an ssd as main HD) and mulling over costs vs a larger internal sata drive and happened on discussions about if usb 3 drives can handle game storage. I was personally caught up in the misunderstanding that you cant play games from an external hard drive, not to mention thinking you could would have people in the know laugh at you.
I’ve since installed two terrabytes of games from my steam account and epic account onto this drive. The only difference I have noted between my main SSD drive and this is that steam installs take a little while longer allocating space, but once done game downloads installed at 5mb a sec, which to be fair to this drive was the max my internet could download at, so not sure if it goes faster..
Either way, Ive spent weeks installing all the massive data games out of my accounts onto this drive and not had a single problem running any of them. No longer do I need to decide what I should delete so I can try something new. Now, I can have it all!
Erm, awesome drive. I regret the last few years making decisions about what I should delete so I can install something new. If only I had of know that a few quid could of given me so much freedom!!
The drive itself is of very high quality and it obviously contains a NAS grade hard drive, I am yet to be convinced about how efficient the small ‘cooling fan’ inside the unit is, but there are vents on the casing to keep the drive cool.
The storage is in fact 10.9TB, not 12TB as advertised. This is because they incorrectly state that there are 1,000,000,000,000 bytes that make up 1TB storage. In fact 1 TB storage equals 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. As a result you are are left with substantially less storage space than advertised.
Second point to make, and this is important for XBox Series X users, this hard drive is currently not 100% compatible with the XBox Series X. For it to work properly (and to prevent your console crashing at start-up or when restarting) I recommend that you only plug the hard drive in after the initial boot-up is complete. I would also recommend disconnecting the hard drive before attempting to restart the XBox Series X or installing any updates to the operating system. At this moment in time, any attempt to re-boot the console with the hard drive plugged in causes the console to freeze on start-up, forcing you to to initiate a hard shut-down. I find this a problem purely with the D10 12TB hard drive as I get no issues with the Seagate 8TB hub when plugged in to the console. This leads me to believe that there is a driver issue with the D10 that needs to be fixed for the XBox Series X. At this moment in time if you have this hard drive plugged in while performing a system update on your XBox Series X, I have real concerns that this could lead to your console being bricked.
When it does work, the hard drive is fast (certainly faster than my old 8TB hub which is beginning to show wear and tear). However I would recommend holding off buying the D10 if you were planning to use it for the XBox Series X at least until the issue has been properly patched on the console.
Update: 19th January 2021
After reporting my concerns regarding the compatibility issues with the 12TB drive to both Microsoft and Western Digital in December, Microsoft released a new operating system update for the XBox Series X last week which has now resolved the issue. Users should have no problem now keeping their drive plugged into their console when rebooting or when initially booting up their console. Wester Digital help desk indicated that they received no similar reports before mine, so it’s important to let them know as soon as you get an issue.
Good: 12TB of fast storage supplied by award winning WD Black drive. It clocked up to 250Mbs on the transfer replacing the USB powered Samsung I had on my XBOX One X which maxed out at 125Mbs.
Good: Reduced to sub 200 and 3 months Xbox Ultimate Game pass included price this at little over 15 per TB and enough storage for the next gen of gaming.
Good and bad: Power supply rather than USB Powered. Includes 2x 7.5W USB Charging ports but means this is always on. Good and bad right!?
Good and bad: This thing is always on unless you unplug it. If you don’t have your Xbox on FULL OFF this drive will grind away often while your console is on standby. The power light is white, not too bright and slowly pulses away. This always on drive state make response times amazing but there is no power management it seems.
Good and bad: Fan not loud (some people complain they don’t hear it) but drive grinds/reads can be heard when its quiet. Louder than my other drives.
Best external gaming drive there is unless you step up to SSD at 5x the price 1/5th capacity.
Both drives are noisy, but this Western Digital is a little noisier and slower.
The drive stops after some time of inactivity. Only time will tell how this affects its lifetime, but I would expect all this stop/start is not a good thing. It takes about 10 seconds to start up and begin to return data when a read request is made.
It has a fan and 2 USB connectors at the back, but I don’t care about this feature and haven’t used the USB ports.
I’m reasonably happy with the drive.
I’ve always used Seagate and honestly they are sufficiently good enough. They do what they are supposed to do. But possibly 99% of all Seagate HDDs work perfectly and then there is that 1% that doesn’t or that 1% that Plays up. I have had a couple of Seagate items that have had problems. It is usually the small connector where the usb/hdmi port on the HDD itself buggars up and you can no longer access you main catalogue of games or music. Which lets face it is a major worry/hassle. So from now on I am going to spend a little bit more to have better quality metal work on the port of the HDD. The strength of the metal is much better. Probably thicker and welded better so it doesn’t just mangle up or fall off completely.
YEP, it’s Western Digital for me from now on I think. And they look a lot better don’t they!? I know it’s only aesthetics but I like things to look good as well as work good!! Don’t you?
There are complaints about it not being future proof enough for the next consoles in terms of transfer speeds below 5GB/s with USB 3.0. It also uses a proprietary version of the micro USB standard that has a wider connection but is not as common in place of the Type C connection. I chose to buy nevertheless for my collection of games and transferred all my content, as default. It does bother me that for compatibility with newer consoles with the exception of Windows Core OS features it may prove a challenge to appreciate. As the point of backwards compatibility in Xbox One, series X may require a format to continue to function, with older support algorithmic partitions. Hopefully that is not the case with software as a limit in 2020.
I found no major problems with build quality although used to Aluminium it is tough and rests with rubber feet on the white plastic base material.
Inside the 12tb D10 is a Western Digital DC HC520 drive. I quick google of said drive will reveal this is an enterprise grade drive.
Coupled with it being on offer for two hundred notes means that when on offer this is a bargain. I stripped the drive out and gave my nas a handy boost.
Bit about it as an external drive. The case is plastic fantastic which is disappointing at this price point. Its chunky though and has a small fan. I’ll likely reuse the case with an old drive.
Either way the drive that came with it is a beast. Very fast with a low margin of error and built to last. The drives literally run all day every day in data centres so will be more than enough for your games collection.
The real limit here on performance is the USB interface. Again perfect for games or as an external drive but a true sata connection sets it free.
