Background im a huge nioh fan, dark souls/elden ring fan. But all of those games had mechanics i didn’t like, that being the infinite rolling around like a rolly polly to dodge enemies attacks. I always found it out of place and just stupid. This game has added in a parry like sekiro but god damn does it feel good. Now there is a learning curve, although once you’ve passed that learning curb like sekiro you will feel like a complete and utter badass, and the game actually becomes easier. Ironically the hardest bosses in the game are the first and last boss. Some bosses can be a cake walk, but every single one was enjoyable.
Not only that but enemies stagger when you hit them with each hit unlike sekiro, which makes each battle actually feel like a fight. Now obviously you can’t spam attacks on enemies, they will get to a point of were they cannot be staggered, but it is made much clearer when this happens. This is one of the best combat systems i’ve experienced in any game and is up there with star wars jedi survivor and the god of war games, EASILY.
There are some things holding this game back however, the first being the graphics. God i love this game and it’s easier to get over the fact that the graphics are outdated. But i wish this game had tripple a graphics and wasn’t using the old nioh 2 graphics. The second is the loot system, LESS IS MORE. honeslty loot is dropped way to much in this game, and personally the weapon i got in the first 10 missions is the one i ended up using the entire game. It is a good system as there is some R&G where each weapon has two skills and each weapon type has a unique moveset. So ideally you want a specific type of weapons with the two skills you want for that weapon that are unique to that weapon type. So it gives you a reason to grind for that weapon on specific missions. This easily could of been expanded with legendary skills that you could get, and feels like a missed opportunity. That being said it’s still a good system, but they just go crazy with the amount of loot you get.
PVP code needs to be improved as well. But when players aren’t magically moving around the map and the connection is smooth. This game SHINES. honestly have not had this much fun in a multiplayer game since i was a kid back in the black ops and mw3 days.
All in all there are some things holding this game back. The story could also be improved a bit, but i still found it interesting and good. Overall im giving it a solid 8/10. This could of easily of been a 10, if the graphics and loot system was better. It is such a shame because gems like these are few and far between. Personally think this is the best souls like game for me and brings me back to the days where i actually had fun with games and couldn’t wait to get home to play it. Hopefully we get a sequal, can’t wait for the DLC.
A great game both a evolution and refinement of their previous games , the difficulty curves is steep but they give you the tools to mitigate that without needing rely on co-op, great bosses with 2 skill check bosses forcing you to refine your play style to beat them.
Overall better than Nioh 2 (too many mechanics with little explanation and a crazy steep difficulty curve)
Firstly I’m not a Nioh or Dark Souls fan – just because im rubbish at them. For those looking for a comparison in terms of difficulty I found this game more forgiving.
I have really enjoyed the game so far, I like the pace of it and love the combat. Each kill is rewarding and getting to a new flag is a relief as your morale grows.
What I do have a love but mainly hate relationship with is the boss encounters. On one hand they are thrilling but the other they are very difficult and take a lot of time, grind and watching of youtube videos haha – however when I finally defeat them it feels like a huge achievement. Sadly im really stuck on one at the moment stopping me progressing.
Overall do some research before you buy but if you have Game Pass give it a go and try perservere.
Good game if you like the Dark Souls, Nioh type games.
Very similar to Nioh which to me is a good thing
Pretty fun game once you get used to deflecting. But it’s a bit short.
I’ll start by saying purely from a gameplay/mechanics perspective, the game is excellent. It’s a nice mix of Nioh and Sekiro combat and feels satisfying to play.
For the negatives, the loot system is not great. Every other enemy will drop a weapon or piece of armour which by the end of a mission results in over 50 pieces of gear you need to sift through.
It’s a linear story game which is fine, apart from that every story mission is the same. Fight through 15/20 minutes of mobs and then fight 1 boss. No levels introduce any interesting concepts and everything is solved with the “CHARGE!” approach until everything is dead
Nioh/sekiro fan should be satisfy . Dont give up although the first boss is very challenging 🙂 .
Looked forward to this game for a long time and it hasn’t disappointed. Well done team ninja. Couldn’t call it nioh 3 but it does still have have that same nioh feel with a bit of sekiro style deflecting thrown into the combat and a new way of doing the stamina.
A great game, its challenging for casual gamers with a hard first boss, but that’s training for what comes after. Persist and you’ll enjoy the ride. Good value for money.
