Installed within hours of arrival after previous, more expensive, but well known Pump repeatedly triggering RCD within days of it’s third birthday (3 year warranty but small print showed motor only 🙁 ) This was identical to the previous pump so this time I decided I should try something different. A dead fish floating on top following hot weather triggered me to source an urgent replacement. So far so good.
We had the bigger version of this pump, but it was a pain to clean and actually too big for our pond. This one is much better, does the job perfectly….pea soup to crystal clear in a few days! And it takes less than half the time to clean!
Really impressed with this pump and filter. The pond water really was grim only a couple of weeks ago and having given up on the old pump some months ago, I thought this pump had a challenge. But the pump has done a brilliant swift job of sorting things out. Its a bit fiddly to open and clean but thats my only relatively mild complaint. Would recommend.
I really wish I’d taken before and after photos. You could barely see the fish in our pond, we had no idea how many were in there following a visit from a heron and not having any protective netting in place. In less than a week it has gone from cloudy and murky (even the plants were covered) to absolutely crystal clear. We have cleaned out the filters every few days (which is a piece of cake). So pleased with the results. Now we can actually exactly how many fish we have and see the bottom of the pond.
I have been using this for nearly 4 years now, I removed the white pebbles and added charcoal balls and clay tubes (I didn’t really need to, but I heard they are good). Fish have been healthy, happy and fat. Best filter for my setup!
Seems a decent product, an all-in-one pump. Filter and UV light. Bought this to ensure the water stays safe in my pond due to sudden increase in goldfish (babies). The water does seem clearer which unfortunately makes it easy to see the blanket weed and other crud on the liner. Easy enough to open and rinse the filter and media. Was initially unsure if the UV light was working but can see the light when looking into the pond at night. Only downside is that the pump component seems too big to clip into its appointed space in the casing so sits awkwardly on top. This doesn’t prevent closure of the casing though and I suspect is unimportant. So far so good.
Bought this when my small garden pond turned into green sludge! Cleared the pond a treat, nice selection of fountain styles, easy to use. Did need cleaning a fair bit at first but now the pond is clear I’m not having to clean it as often. Cleaning is super easy. Did a great job and my fish seem chuffed!
I’ve been using various “brand leader” pumps and filters for 20 plus years. I recently moved our pond site and downsized it. I was just about to get the card out at the local aquatics store and thought “hang on, I’ll have a look on Amazon-it’s been nearly three days since my last purchase”. So off I trundled. Anyway, this looked perfect and had similar performance figures to my brand leader choice but for nearly half the price. One of two of the reviews were a little negative but chidingly so. I bought it, installed it just as the sun came out (and stayed out) and despite there being little vegetation to help it the water remains clear. Cleaning is pretty straight forward and takes 5 minutes but does need doing weekly at the moment. I am happy with the price. I am happy with the performance and checking with the fish they have confirmed they are happy with the water quality and the new position of the pond as now they get to see the sun all day. They’re just waiting for Google Earth to take an updated snap of the garden so they can see what it all looks like.
Been in my pond for about 2 weeks now noticeable difference in water colour fish seem to be more active just needed to clean the filter every couple of days. Don’t wear good clothes when doing it!!!.
I bought this pump 5 years ago in May 2017 …this pump has run all year twenty four hours a day…and we are in Cumbria with ice sheets on the pond …never switched off and never replaced any parts just clean the filter regularly …still going strong just like the day it was installed…keeps my koi pond clean and algae free and I would recommend to anyone a super product do not hesitate to buy one …also the fountain feature works well and it also feeds a small water feature that flows into the pond at the same time …it really is a special piece of kit !!
Bought this pump for my small pond which contains fish, and it seems to be perfect. Comes with different fountain effects, which is great. It also clears the pond quickly. Plenty of cable if your electric supply is far from your pond. Would recommend.
The pump is working fine. So far so good.
My frustration lies in the non standard fittings.
As my outdoor tank is quite deep I wanted to extend the fountain pipe so that it was actually sticking out of the water. I toddled off to various fish places to no avail due to none of them fitting. I had a look at this manufacturers website and can replace the fountain pieces but there’s no guarantee that I can use these as an extension or indeed if there is a separate extension piece that I can purchase.
My current solution is to place the pump onto a sunken basket which results in less swimming room for the fish.
When I opened the box and saw the pump is about the size of a house brick I thought it was going to be too big for my tiny pond, but it is pretty invisible under the water and does an AMAZING job.
I had a green pea soup of a pond with 4 goldfish I genuinely couldn’t see because the water was so green and thought I needed to do something before it finished them off.
The pump was so easy to install. Put it together in two minutes, drop it in the water and turn on. However I had the use the I try too s to manually ensure the UV light was on as you can’t see it very well in the water (it doesn’t show at all in my pond) You can adjust the fountain water pressure to whichever height or power you like it or turn it off – and even remove the fountain all together. It also has a little nozzle to fit a hose on should you wish to have a cascading water feature / waterfall but I have turned this off. I chose the circular fountain (it looks like a jellyfish apparently) and it produces a lovely trickle noise, – the pump motor is just about silent which is great.
For the first 48 hours I didn’t think it was working as the water was still green and gloopy I swished out the foam filter every couple of days (which got quite mucky and showed how much of a good job it was doing but a really easy 5 min task) and by day 6 the water was crystal clear and has remained perfectly clean and clear since.
It is a superb little pump which works hard and produces superb results. My fish are very happy and I can at least see them! The fountain looks fantastic and has really added something special to a very boring pond, which is now crystal clear.
After being treated to get rid of blanketweed last year, our pond was very murky and our fish could not be seen. The Cup 305 was easy to install and now after 3 weeks our pond is crystal clear. Because we knew there’s a lot of ‘stuff’ in the water, we have rinsed the filter twice a week. The amount of sludge each time has been unbelievable and we have bought a spare filter so we can complete the operation quickly. The only thing to be aware of is that the unit is quite heavy to lift out of the water whilst leaning in from the side. Having said that, the bottom of our pond -and the fish – are now visible, so we are well pleased
We had a small pond installed, and prematurely populated it with five small goldfish. Predictably the small floating fountain thing wasn’t an effective filter, so with a bit of research, I bought this CUP-305. Despite the reviews, I have to admit I was skeptical, as I thought the pond was too far gone – you can see how green it was on the first day I installed the pump. I literally couldn’t see more than an inch below the surface.
Fortunately, despite this, it was relatively easy to install the pump. It seems well thought out, for example, the spout tube telescopes, and is on a ball-joint type thing, so even if the base isn’t perfectly level, the spout can be. The most time consuming thing about fitting was routing the cable safely – I ran it through conduit into the shed where I installed an additional socket to plug in to (only do this if you know what you’re doing!).
Anyway, I got it running and each day I checked. For the first couple, I wasn’t convinced anything was happening, then I wasn’t sure if I was imagining it but I could swear I could see deeper into the pond.
I installed it on 30th of March, and by 5th April, the pond was beautifully clear. It’s a bit difficult to see in the photo, because of the reflections, but you can see the stones on the bottom, the fish, even the pump body (i turned it off just to take this photo).
All in all, I’m thoroughly impressed with the CUP-305. Its done a fantastic job, not to mention it was a good bit cheaper than similar devices available locally. I’ve not tried cleaning it yet, but it should be fairly straight forward. The top panel unclips, and gives access to the filtration media inside.
This pump has a surprisingly powerful flow rate for it’s size, my pond is only small but was thick with green algae that I have tried various powders and liquid remedies none of which have helped clear. But within two days of installing this pump I can now start to see the bottom and my long lost gold fish, I’ve even got a frog ! I have set up the pump using the tee piece and the fountain, and found that the two flow control’s on the tee piece worked brilliantly in controlling the flow rate to the fountain and a waterfall I have feeding into the pond. I couldn’t really see the U.V.. indicator light but the water was so green I couldn’t see the pump when I first put it in, All is becoming very clear and I am very happy with the quality and performance of this pump.
Ordered this pump/filter as I’d just about given up on my pond ever being clean and clear of algae. This arrived, Friday pm well within time, took me 15 minutes to fit plug, and submerge the filter. Switched on, adjusted the fountain and left things alone. By the end of the day, water was starting to look clear, Next day, the pea-soup had all but vanished. 36 hours later, the water is crystal clear and I can see the bottom and the plants contained within.
To say I am pleased is an understatement. The resident goldfish seem happy, as best I can tell, they seem to like the flow of water and are more active than previously. Recommended – this does what it says on the box.
Just an update 3 July 2021, I have found that the filter needs to be cleaned every three weeks or so. I put a spare filter pad and rotate them, I clean the old one with pond water after fitting the new.
This was better than I had hoped for. My (small) pond was so green you couldn’t see the bottom. So I took the plunge and bought this filter. Overnight it made a huge difference and now the water is completely clear.
The unit itself is thoughtfully made. Easy to take a apart to clean.
The fountain comes with 3 heads all of which I’d be happy to use.
My only feedback would be that the uv light check window is hard to see when the pump is running (because it’s on the top and when the fountain is running you cant easily see through all the water splashes). It may have said somewhere- but the unit doesn’t ship with a plug. That’s certainly no issue – indeed very helpful – you have 3 meters of cable and I wanted one end of the cable to go through a hole in a fence – so not having a plug end was great. You may also want to he’s wire this into the mains. But I wasn’t aware it needed a plug so I had to rob one off an unused appliance- no biggy, but it would be helpful to have one in the box!
After receiving my pump and following the instructions for installation. I put power to the unit. Nothing happened . Thinking it might take a minute to prime I placed my hand on the water to straighten the pipe for the fountain . Only to be given an electric shock . I have returned the item. Will try again as this is usually a very good reliable brand. Will try the replacement tomorrow.wish me luck…………………. 2 days later I have now received my replacement and have to say I am delighted with the product. First stop was to test in the bath all working fine and my faith has been restored in this company .
Really great pond filter. Pleasantly surprised, I almost bought the bigger version for my 1000L litre pond but decided to give CUP-305 a go and it’s great. I’ve always kept up with pond maintenance but the recent heat wave increased the algae and I was cleaning my smaller filter every 2 days. Within a day this had it all cleared up. The UV bulb is on the top of the unit and can be seen clearly at night and is still strong after 4 weeks.
I clean the filter once a week. It’s easy. The clips that hold the two casing halves together are sturdy and take a bit of oomph to undo but thats good. Really easy to clean,it takes me 15 mins to wash off the pond grime and run some water through the fountain attachment and filter.
My small pond only houses 4 shubunkins of large size but my pond is surrounded by a wild garden and trees so a fair bit foliage falls in there despite fishing alot out with my net but after 4 weeks the pond is still crystal clear.
Edit: 4 years on, 35,000 hours of constant use, the pump started to lose a little of its oomph. Bought another one and looking forward to the next four years
First off, no pond pump can be supplied with a plug. It is meant to be hard-wired, it is the law. What you do after you receive it, is your affair. If you did not know this, maybe you should reflect rather than write a negative review because of an assumption that it would have an (illegal) plug
The filter media is lightweight, it is meant to be, it is biological media; you should not be cleaning it – ever, leave it where it is !
I ignored all the instructions, simply fitted a plug (not supplied) and placed it in the pond with none of the fountain heads etc. I left it for 14 days without any attention, the water was cleared, I could actually see the fish, dead chemically-treated blanketweed slime disappeared etc .. finally thought I should do some sort of maintenance, unscrewed the up-pipe thing, clicked off the lid, took out the sponge and squeezed it out in a bucket of clean water, clicked it back together, picked the gunk off the box and left it to do its stuff again – took me about three minutes
If you’re looking for a ‘dump it in the pond, neglect it for ages and let it do its thing’ this is the one for you
Bought this for a small pond (circa 250l) where had constant battle with green water (algae). The unit includes both uv light and filter and pump within the one unit so could replace existing pump. The filter comprises of three aspects, a section with small stones, another with small plastic bits and a foam pad which sits at top of unit. The unit started making a difference pretty much from the start with a noticeable difference in days. I’ve previously used barley straw extract to try to clear pond water but to little success.
Due to the large build up of algae I’ve cleaned the filters several times, first after three days, then a week later and then the next week. Hopefully frequency of cleaning will reduce down as the water clarity improves and excess algae is killed and uv light provides constant killing of new alage.
The only downsides of product are:
– takes some time to clean filter material and the plastic bits go into a small section within unit which can be fiddly to get back in after cleaning. I’m sure over time I’ll get more efficient at streamlining the process. Worth noting the plastic filter bits float whereas the stone obviously don’t so tipping out the filter material together into a bucket then adding water and netting out the floating plastic bits may be a quicker way of sorting those two filter mediums.
– The fountain feature includes three different heads and with a small pond needs some adjustment to avoid too much splashing of water over edges of pond. An adjustment can be made to the amount of water going upto the fountain head via a small ‘tap’ style hand adjuster on the fountain base. I’ve had to adjust this in situ a few times as it seems to move by itself and has reduced flow to a dribble. Easy to down by putting hand in pond but seems to lack resistance to stop it gradually reverting to original position.
However the unit overall is excellent value with similar units in local stores cost between 2-3 times the price. For the unit price I would not hesitate to recommend the product.
So this gives a pretty impressive performance for the size of unit. I have used it for a week and the pond has gone from murky to completely clear in that time. A couple of points:
1) This does NOT come with a plug attached! You need to get a normal plug and put a 3 AMP fuse in it – as these were only 15p each from my local hardware store and 1 for the plug that was ok – but it was extra hassle that I could have done without
2) The fountain options (there are 3) are all great – we have elected for the lowest one otherwise our pond is so small that the water didn’t go back into it!
Longevity of product is clearly a work in progress – I’ll come back in a year to update…. Good unit for the price
This has saved my pond and my sanity! I had a constant battle this year with algae. My pond was natural with no pumps or filters but this year I could not control the algae with plants, potions or shade and was constantly playing in it and waiting for the next ‘miracle’ cure that 95% of customers found worked a treat. I was always in the 5%.
I got electricity put at the end of the garden and bought this pump and it was truly miraculous.
By the next morning I could see a hint of fish through the pea soup and by 7 days the pond was clear!!!
I found I had 14 fish when I thought I only had 7 (I thought I was seeing the same one twice but it was a different fish!)
I had to clean it out every couple of days at first as the pond was so disgusting but when it was clear I cleaned it once a week. It is easy to take apart and clean. The instructions are easy to follow. I have had 6 months of clean and clear pond and have taken it out now for the winter. I gave it a thorough clean out and it is now in storage. I will put it back in again at the beginning of Spring and look forward to a year of happy pond and happy fish
what can I say, initially I bought the larger unit cup-311 thinking larger would be better but when it was delivered it was obvious it was too large for my 3ft square above ground pond bought as a tactile stimulation for my child who has cerebral palsy – so I contacted the customer services dept and they couldn’t be more helpful – so cut a longer story a bit shorter returned larger unit and ordered the smaller one. On unpacking this was definitely the correct size for my pond, following the instructions closely the unit was installed within ten minutes- it took me longer to feed the lead through my house wall than to get the unit up and running – fully adjustable water flow for the fountain to be as small or large as required – added bonus of being able to add an extra feature (like a waterfall) or to use as a return flow to make the fountain even more versatile – haven’t seen any improvement in the colour of my pond water – but its only been in an hour or so at the writing of this review – which I will add to in a week or so once noticeable water murkiness with the hope of giving the additional star please see photo/video after initial instillation – I will add another when the water quality improves- hope this review helps give ideas of fountain height and size for people not sure what unit to go for.
I must say this seems a nifty little pump, with the added advantage of a UV filter which kills green “pea soup” very rapidly. I initially bought the larger size but instantly realised it was too big for my bijou pond. Amazon’s return policy is very user-friendly. After a few days I had to clean it, which is not a big deal. Be careful when removing it from the water, as it gains quite a lot of weight suddenly. A bucket of warm water, a cloth and a brush did the trick for the housing and sponge, and I washed the media with a sieve under the tap. Be careful not to drop any parts into the pond, also wear rubber gloves and wash hands afterwards, as there is a (very remote) risk of Weils disease. The fish seem to have perked up no end, they are darting about like Michael Phelps. Now all that remains is a muddy suspension which I’m hoping will eventually clear.
The fountain head is telescopic, allowing it to operate at up to 60cm or thereabouts. If your pond is too deep you can always park the pump on a brick. I prefer the bell fountain which is adjustable.
(3 months later) I’ve had to clean the pump monthly. It doesn’t seem so good at dealing with blanket weed, hence I’ve reduced it to 4 stars.
