The BG Electrical WP22-01 Double Weatherproof Outdoor Switched Power Socket is a solid choice for those seeking a reliable and weather-resistant power solution for their outdoor spaces. With its IP66 rating and thoughtful design, this power socket offers convenience and durability, although there are a few minor considerations to keep in mind.
Weatherproof Reliability:
One of the standout features of the BG Electrical WP22-01 is its IP66 rating, which ensures protection against dust and water ingress. This makes it an ideal choice for outdoor installations where exposure to the elements is a concern. Whether you’re setting up lighting, powering garden tools, or charging devices, the weatherproof design provides peace of mind that your connections remain safe and operational.
Double Socket Convenience:
The inclusion of two power sockets adds practicality to this outdoor power solution. This feature allows you to simultaneously power multiple devices, reducing the need for additional extension cords or adaptors. It’s particularly useful for tasks that require multiple electrical connections, such as outdoor gatherings or DIY projects.
Sturdy Build Quality:
The BG Electrical WP22-01 impresses with its sturdy construction. The durable materials used in its design feel robust and capable of withstanding outdoor conditions. The grey color blends well with various outdoor aesthetics, and the unit’s overall build quality instills confidence that it will endure regular use without premature wear.
Ease of Installation:
While the installation process isn’t overly complex, it may require some basic electrical knowledge. The unit’s wiring and mounting may pose a challenge for those who are less experienced with electrical work. Clear and comprehensive installation instructions would further enhance the user experience for individuals tackling this as a DIY project.
Limitation on Switch Control:
One limitation to note is that the power sockets are controlled by a single switch. This means that both sockets are either powered on or off simultaneously. While this might not be a significant concern for many users, it could be inconvenient in situations where you need independent control over each socket.
Conclusion: A Dependable Outdoor Power Solution
In conclusion, the BG Electrical WP22-01 Double Weatherproof Outdoor Switched Power Socket offers a reliable and weather-resistant solution for your outdoor power needs. Its weatherproof reliability, double socket convenience, sturdy build quality, and ease of installation are strong selling points. However, the limitation on independent socket control and the need for some electrical expertise during installation should be considered. Overall, this power socket is a dependable choice for keeping your outdoor spaces powered and functional. A rating of 4 stars feels appropriate given its solid performance with a few minor considerations.
Purchased this to power my Hot Tub outside, and yes it needs to be weatherproof. Easy to install and wire up. I would recommend clear-sealant placed around the back of the unit where it meets the wall, and around the holes made for the wiring. Jut ensure if anything is plugged into the socket, the lid is shut and clicked on both sides to prevent water ingression.
it does what I need, totally useable. The plastic housing seems cheaper than another I have, hard to explain as the other I have seems to be better quality, thicker and more durable to the touch if that makes sense. Ok for the price though, I will see how it lasts.
Easy installation (its not rocket science. It’s simply wiring in a power socket), attached it to a wall. Done.
Each socket has a red light indicator to show when the power switch is on and power is live.
The locking cover is transparent black and has a reassuringly tight clip mechanism.
With the cover closed, only standard sized power sockets can fit inside.
It does what it says! It’s an outdoor weatherproof socket. OK as previously mentioned, the inclusion of a weatherproof grommet for the rear cable entry would have made it better, but certainly not a show-stopper. I hope the cover clips last through time, as previous ones I’ve had they have broken in the past!
Bought two of these. The first one I purchased was perfect. The second one I found it required a lot of force to close the latches on the waterproof front. This was even without any cables trailing out from the socket.
This is a good quality box, I’ve noticed them over the place used professionally at places like holiday resorts and for good reason. The only slight negative is how tight the locks are to get on and off, they do take a bit of effort. The box and necks are large enough so that a fitted plug with flexible plastic near the end of the cord – like you see on most electric gardening equipment – will still fit with the lid closed
When a product is this good, what more can you say about it? It’s solidly built, looks great (although I would’ve preferred it in brown but hey, that’s just me), it’s so easy to fit (even if you are mildly confindent with DIY/electrical), it works well.
BUY IT.
Well made unit. It allows connection from the rear as well as the sides and bottom. Some alternative units come with attached cables but in these cases the connection is from the bottom and whereas the cables can be disconnected and re-routed through the rear (drilling a 20mm circular hole), a big gap is left at the bottom with no means to blank it off. So I went for this one and bought a cable separately. Main criticism is that it is very stiff to lock and unlock.
Good overall construction and quality seals.
However, there is an issue with the conduit ‘knockouts’. These are press fit and have no seals.
After installation, I ran a garden hose over the box for a few minutes and then opened it up.
I noticed some water ingress on one of the upper knockouts through capillary action.
This weakness is easily solved by pushing out the knockouts and the sparing application of silicon sealant before refitting.
The only other mild issue are the front cover cosmetic/anti-tamper screw caps. They don’t fit very well and fall out.
I gave up with them and filled the screw holes with silicon.
The screw holes won’t leak as have seals, but as the screws are chromed steel, they will rust. A bit of sealant puts that concern to rest.
The darkened front cover allows the LED indication on each switch to be visible.
As a qualified electrician, I am very pleased with the quality of the terminations and overall construction.
I have now bought and installed several of these.
(And don’t worry, the one installed on the bare brickwork now has a rain shield over it too! )
I’ve installed stacks of these (and other brands) during lock-down and whilst I probably wouldn’t rave about all of British General’s products, these sockets are superior to all of the others that I’ve used and are a really good price.
Provided they’re installed properly (by a decent spark if it’s a new circuit!) They’ll be entirely weatherproof and shouldn’t cause any problems for years!
I’ve seen these after years of exposure to sunlight and although they discolour slightly with UV it seems to be less than most of the plain grey ones and they don’t seem to become brittle from exposure to the elements.
Make sure you drill the drain hole at the bottom. Even though they are weatherproof you can still get condensation building up and it needs a way out!
If I was to grumble about anything to do with these then I’d say that the clasp that holds it shut can be a bit stiff but it does ease off after some use. And that’s being really picky.
The sockets were very easy to install. The main reason I was just replacing an old damaged double socket. I would suggest if your going to attempt to fit one from scratch you should consult a qualified electrician to safely run the wires. Very easy to fit you will need a drill to drill holes in the case to both feed the wiring through the back and the fixing screws. It has to strong locking clips to keep the unit closed. It looks good once fitted. I have a few concerns firstly the material the unit is made from feels brittle. I can’t say that it is but that’s how it feels. The locking clips are really tight and quite a struggle to both open and close. I felt I might break the clip as they are so tight. The other issue I have is the original unit I removed had a rubber seal which sealed the unit when the front plate holding the wires was screwed on. This one does not have a seal between the front and back plate. I’m fortunate that where my socket is fitted it’s under a conserve tory window, and it sits under the window sill. That means there is no way that water can run down the wall and get into the unit. I would suggest if fitting it to a wall with no overhead protection you would need to seal the unit. I have used silicon all around the unit where it touches the wall. It’s just a belt and braces thing can’t be to carefull with water and electricity. To sum up the unit felt brittle clips are tough to open and close, and no rubber seal. Having said all that it seems to be a well made unit with easy to follow instructions.
Due to the early freezing cold weather I decided to upgrade my single outdoor socket so it could keep my Camper Vans batteries topped up and also my car when I don’t use it for a few days (the alarms on both vehicles use about 1 amp per hour)
The one I’ve replaced is the single version of this double socket and it has worked flawlessly even though it can be quite difficult to clip/unclip the lid if using thick cable.
The review:
The first double socket that arrived had a manufacturing defect that needed to be returned (the lid would not clip together) but the replacement clips together fine (although stiff like the single but that’s because It’s IP66)
Installation:
Fitting can be a bit of a pain in the harris because each wall mounting recess has some kind of raised molding ridge which makes it very hard to centre the hole. Why the couldn’t of made it flat – and even put a little dimple – I don’t know as it almost looks like the manufacturer has intentionally made it difficult. Apart from that It’s easy to make a hole in the centre to thread the power cable through and unlike the wall mounting recesses this has a dimple so the drill can be centered (You can also put your power cable through the side or the bottom which should be pretty straight forward)
All in all it should last quite a long time but I have knocked off one star because one of the power LEDs does not work and they do not supply you with 4 wall mounting screws/plugs which would make it a lot easier to install.
Oh and I actually drilled a hole in the wall next to a 240v hall socket that was not used (first checking I wasn’t drilling into It’s cable) and with a length of cable and a plug I can plug it into the wall socket and turn the external socket on/off when needed.
Very good, but the instructions are wrong! Other people in their reviews have mentioned that the Gasket Seal was missing. After fitting it and testing it I realised I hadn’t got one either. The MK socket it was replacing had one and a very similar one is shown in the diagram of the instructions and is mentioned in note 5 of the instructions. I didn’t really want to send it back so contacted the manufacturers via email to see if they could send me a seal. They replied very promptly as follows:
“Thank you for your product enquiry.
We have had two different enclosure designs:
– Our original enclosure design had a separate black rubber gasket and the 4 corner posts in the back-box were simply plastic
– Our updated design has a retained gasket within the front piece and the 4 corner post have tapped brass inserts in them
Therefore, if you look in your back-box posts and find that the inserts are present then you do not need a gasket as it is retained within the front section of the enclosure.
If you have no inserts in the corner posts of your back-box, however, then you will need to get the entire enclosure exchanged as the switch over to the updated design was long enough ago that we have no separate gaskets to send unfortunately.”
As the instructions show and mention the gasket I quite reasonably assumed I must have the older version and sent it back for a replacement. Of course when the replacement arrived it was exactly the same. There is on close examination a recessed seal in the front box, so basically they updated the design, but not changed the instructions.
Having just purchased and installed one of these Masterplug 2 Gang Weatherproof Outdoor double sockets to the outside of my house for my outdoor Christmas lights to plug into, the Masterplug socket in comparison are as robust and as good as the more expensive and similar 32 MK Masterseal sockets for less than half the price. The Masterplug socket was easy to fix the rear casing to the wall with it’s many access cable entry points. The plastic grey outer casing appears to be as robust as the competitor outdoor MK sockets and I have had a few of those around my rear garden for my outside garden lights over the years. What I particularly like about these Masterplug sockets are the red neon indicator lights which show whether it is switched on or off and the large opening grips making them far easier to open than the MK sockets. My only concern is the dark transparent plastic lid cover which seems to be a bit more of a brittle plastic than the rest of the product casing and only time will tell whether or not it lives up to constant usage, outside weathering and exposure to the UV sunlight. That said it is the attention to the small details that I particularly like such as the rubber covers that just push on to the inside rear box to hide and protect the rear screws fixings and the small grey round plastic covers that just push on to hide the outer front screw fixings that secures the inside front lid to the rear of the socket casing. All in all an excellent quality product for the 17 paid.
