As an avid DIY enthusiast in the UK, I recently purchased the Bosch Home and Garden Glue Gun PKP 18 E, and it has become an indispensable tool in my projects. I primarily use it for crafts, home repairs, and minor woodworking tasks. What I absolutely love about this glue gun is its quick heating time, allowing me to get started on my projects almost instantly. The ergonomic design and comfortable grip make it easy to handle for extended periods without any discomfort. The precision nozzle ensures precise application, enabling me to achieve clean and professional-looking results.
However, there are a couple of aspects I found slightly disappointing. Firstly, the glue sticks tend to run out quite quickly, requiring frequent replacements, which can be a bit frustrating. Additionally, the power cord could be longer as it sometimes restricts my movement, especially when working on larger projects.
Overall, the Bosch Home and Garden Glue Gun PKP 18 E has been a reliable and efficient tool that has greatly enhanced my DIY experience. Its impressive heating time, comfortable grip, and precise application make it a valuable addition to any DIY enthusiast’s toolbox. Despite the minor drawbacks, I highly recommend this glue gun for its performance and versatility.
It never fails to impress with its exceptional performance and reliability. With its quick heat-up time and precise application, it helps me bring my creative ideas to life. The comfortable grip makes it a joy to handle, and its versatility allows me to tackle various materials with ease. From DIY projects to repairs, this trusty tool has become an indispensable part of my creative journey.
Great item, has a plug attached to it so bear that in mind if you needed a more portable one but this works great for me. Feels like it’s built well and no issues so far.
Love this glue gun. I’ve tried so many. They either don’t have a small enough nozzle or don’t stick things very well or fall over. This has a stand that actually works. Has got the bonus of the extra heat. Long lead as well.
This glue gun looks and feels much more sturdier than others I’ve used in the past. Heats up quite quickly then maintains the heat. A long thin nozzle for accurate placing of glue in tight spots but, for the price, I would have liked a interchangeable larger nozzle included.
This is a very good glue gun, and I am slightly embarrassed to admit I’ve bought 3 of them so far, for use with different types of glue stick.
What I like:-
The Long nozzle.
Very often, I’ve struggled to use other glue guns because they don’t allow me to place glue accurately into awkward areas. This glue gun solves that with a very useful long nozzle that allows you to place glue precisely in little nooks and crannies. Seriously, don’t under-estimate how useful that is.
The Trigger:
The trigger action is smooth and allows a (user-dependent) consistent bead of glue to be applied.
The Lead:
The lead is a little over 2m long which is long enough to be useful without being a pain to store.
What bothers me:-
Slow Heat-up:
The glue gun has quite a slow heat-up time, in my opinion. It’s actually not that bad for a mains glue gun, but I also own Bosch’s excellent cordless glue pen (for 7mm glue sticks) which heats up in 15 seconds and is very quick and convenient to use.
Wasteful feed mechanism:
This is why I own more than one of these guns. The feed mechanism pushes from the back, and so you have to feed a fair bit of a glue stick in before any glue comes out. Then if you want to change the type of glue stick, you have a fair bit of the existing glue stick to get through before the new colour/type of glue emerges. This is particularly annoying when you have to feed a new stick in to allow the gun to push through the first stick, and then the new stick can’t be removed easily without risk of damaging the feed mechanism. This is more of a pain than it sounds, a decent glue sticks aren’t that cheap and cheap glue sticks do not perform well. Hence, I ended up buying another couple of these guns when Amazon had a sale on.
All in all, the ownership experience is pretty good. The glue-gun works well and if you register promptly after purchase, Bosch give you an extended 3-year warranty. Even at full price, they’re fair value, given the usefulness of the long nozzle and that 3-year warranty, but keep an eye on the price, because they do drop under 20 fairly regularly (though not for long) and they’re a bargain if you can grab one when they do.
Do consider the Bosch Glue pen too though, as the rapid heat-up time and cordless convenience make a really appealing package.
Works very well once it’s up to temperature. It’s surprising how quick you get through the glue sticks so get more and make sure they are the 11mm ones. As with all hot melt guns you need to be quite quick as the glue cools and solidifies quite quick. Don’t leave it somewhere where it can cause damage as the end gets very hot and the glue does leak out of the nozzle between applications.
I got mine from Amazon warehouse which made it a more attractive price.
Ok most important. Don’t buy the glue sticks that are advertised on the same page as this glue gun. This gun requires 11mm diameter sticks and Amazon is advertising 7mm. They won’t work properly as they won’t feed through.
Apart from that once you have the correct sticks all seems OK. Brought Bosch as a brand I trust and all seems as normal. Would be nice to have an on/off switch or even a led ..but is acceptable.
This is an honest review after 2 years of regular use.
Pro:
1. Relatively easy to use, although power cable is a bit heavy, but sturdy. Wonder if for same money you can get a full cordless with similar basic features nowadays..
2. Thin pin that was useful, gives a bit more precision to your job
3. Basic, but reliable so far.
4. Stays on table standing, but design is not great, could have been better
Cons:
1. Temperature control doesn’t exist, however it takes the glue to correct melting temperature
2. If left plugged for some time it starts to heat the body and starts leaking in the back. Check my picture, I have cleaned it but it somehow started accumulating glue on that end.
3. When you put it standing on table, using that metal thing, while still plugged, make sure you put a plate or something under tip, because it will start leaking slowly. You don’t want glue on table or floor.
Overall happy, but next time will be looking for cordless if anyone created it, plus thinner tip and temperature control. Thanks for reading my review.
My old glue gun finally went up in a puff of smoke after years of service. Having tried quite a few other makes and returned them because of various issues and poor quality, finally settled on Bosch.
Can’t think how I ever managed without one, in all my years of crafting. Ok so it doesn’t have a temperature control nor an on/off switch, but then neither did my old one. The extra length nozzle is what makes this tool so much better for crafting as it becomes a kind of shaping tool as well as an applicator. You can buy extra nozzles but the downside is that the gun has to be warm enough before you can switch them over – a poor safety factor in my opinion.
Mine doesn’t drip glue all over the craft area when put aside. However the trick is to learn how to control the flow of glue before putting it down.
After a few weeks I decided to try another make as I needed a second gun. It smoked the place out and it definitely wasn’t steam from the glue stick. I wanted another one for colour glue sticks. In the end I just purchased another Bosch and I confess that later on I will probably buy a third to hold a different nozzle.
Personally speaking the pros far outweigh the cons and as a crafter of over 40 years the Bosch glue gun comes highly recommended as a “no bells or whistles” straight forward glue gun.
Arrived today which was expected and I immediately gave it a test run.
Pros:
It is very light and a decent size.
There is a generous length of quality lead
The nozzle is very fine and fairly long (one reason for buying this one)
Cons:
The instruction book is very vague
The nozzle has to be attached but there is a metal cup that goes onto it before fitting it so some guess work during assembly.
The gun is designed to be able to rest on a wire stand and its handle whilst warming it can stand there but is precarious to say the least prone to fall over and dribble hot glue.
Use I used it to glue together some plywood parts. The gun heats up after about 7-8 minutes and having already inserted the glue stick you squeeze the trigger to push out the hot clear glue from the nozzle apply the glue and contact together the parts. It dries really quickly and goes from clear when hot back to white again once it has cooled the parts are stuck fast. The only problem I had was as mentioned in the cons above once you have applied the glue you need to work quickly and putting the gun back in its built in stand is tricky as the cable tends to cause the gun to tip over fiddling with this means the glue is cooling all the while. I will make a stand for mine from polymorph or some such to holster the gun between applications. When hot and on its stand it does leak a tiny amount of glue so do not stand it on a surface likely to be damaged. Luckily the leaked glue cooled and peeled off my work top .
On the whole I think this is a good investment my first hot glue gun and am very happy with it so far. I many add to this review if anything else comes to mind later.
I have used this hot-glue gun for about a year now. I don’t like reviewing after just one or two uses as I feel some things don’t always show up straight away. Overall 4.5 stars (can’t show half stars so it looks like a 5*) because it’s pretty good but has a couple of small niggles.
Would I buy again if it broke – Yes.
Why?
a) – it seems quite well made, robust and has thus far proved reliable.
b) – because it puts out a relatively high volume of adhesive, quickly – meaning I can stick quite a lot of stuff, quickly, without waiting for glue to heat up.
c) – it uses 11mm diameter sticks rather than the 7mm sticks (i.e. as found in ‘toy’ glue guns like the sub 5 model I replaced with this Bosch PKP 18E). That’s more than twice the cross sectional area so more than twice the capacity output all other things being equal.
d) – heater is greater wattage than many competitors (so quicker start and more volume all other things being equal).
f) – access to longer sticks (in 11mm) so less time spent inserting new ‘follow on’ stick.
g) – has a slim metal nozzle (easier to poke into narrow slots) which feels more durable than competitors using plastic.
I did a fair bit of research before buying and concluded that this was one of better models available – notably the heater in this was bigger than most and it struck a reasonable balance between cost and likely performance.
It’s not perfect so half a star off for small niggles….
1) won’t easily stand up and often falls over – a bench stand or holster might help – but would add bulk and cost.
2) dribbles a small amount of glue from nozzle, when left standing – workaround is to switch off when not using, but this necessitates waiting up to a minute before one can re-use
3) won’t easily store back in supplied box as power cord is a tad too stiff (needed to cover power use) and plus a bit big
Overall niggles are minor and not ‘show stoppers’. Overall this Bosch PKP 18ER is significantly better than my ‘toy’ 7mm stick gun it replaced. Because it works properly I find I use it a lot more often than ever I did my cheap/nasty ‘toy’ glue gun. Bottom line if you are serious about using hot-melt glue then get a serious industrial grade glue dispenser gun.
Might have worked for others, but not good enough for me.
Glue does ooze from nozzle while standing, but not as much as other glue guns I have used.
I would not say this is a precision glue gun, it’s just as messy as other glue guns and does not give a fine enough bead/line that I need for small gift box and card making.
I had hoped that I would be able to add embellishments but the way it handles the glue (messily) I’m not gonna risk it and will stick to good old pva from now on.
I’m gonna stick to double sided tape and pva from now on.
🙁 🙁 🙁
Update: I was way too hasty leaving my review. Yes it does ooze but that depends how much you squeeze the trigger. I was squeezing way too hard at first meaning the glue was spewing out of the nozzle while left resting.
The glue being wasted now I’ve mastered this gun is very minimal and nothing I am concerned about any more.
I have managed some thin beads which are ok for small gift bag or box making, I recommend to swipe the nozzle on to another surface prior to dispensing on your area to be glued before attempting that. Get rid of the ooze blob before applying to the working area first and your glue line should be tidy and good.
Overall, I think practice will make perfect and this gun is now a good buy as far as I’m concerned.
Sorry if I’ve put anyone off buying this gun because now I’m loving it!
I have had numerous glue guns and had lost faith in them due to buying glue guns that “looked the part” but ended up being of poor build quality and ineffective in the delivery of glue.
Still holding boxes of glue sticks acquired over the years I kept hunting because the principle is good and very useful.
Because the design of the Bosch glue gun, against some of it’s competitors, did not inspire me, I had passed it bye until I recently noted the good reviews for this product on Amazon…..so I took a chance.
Result!….this has been a very good “best buy” for me and I am confident will be for you.
The metal delivery nozzle is approx. 25mm long by 3mm dia…which has a nice soft black silicon shroud as it joins the main body This nozzle design allows you to see exactly where you are placing the glue accurately and can also be used to remelt glue just applied.
Once the glue gun is up to it’s very hot temperature a gentle squeeze of the trigger allows the glue to flow smoothly and stop on release of the trigger.Importantly constant operating temperature is maintained whilst switched on, by the guns circuitry,..it is always ready and a dream to use!
On top of every thing else it also has a good quality 2 metre butyl rubber/silicon mains lead.
After switching it off from the mains supply you can even continue to use the glue gun for a while afterwards….fantastic!
To sum up….. this tool is one of those that, “if I broke or lost it, I would replace it”, without hesitation.
If there was a case of “looks can be deceiving” this is one….it may look dated but boy does it do the job well!
….and ladies, this is one of those “boys toys”…penknife, torch, trainset, glue gun!
