I decided to upgrade to this tent, after my partner and I really enjoy camping, and we like to bring quite a few bits and find the extra room this tent offers, really allows us to spread out. It’s the first tent we had that allows us to stand up and walk around inside it. This might seem pointless or trivial, but we were stuck inside this for 2 days during the horrific downpours the UK endured first week of August, and having the ability to stretch our legs stand up right, sit up properly in a chair etc – really helped.
The divider that splits the tent 50/50, we didn’t need, but I was curious to see how that would work with regards to the inflatable double bed. What would happen is one corner of 1 persons feet (a few inches only) would basically run into the divider, so if you can cope with that, or you arrange your bed sideways on, you could have 2 doubles on opposite sides of the divider.
The guide mentions 15 minutes to erect the tent, well for the untrained couple who have experience with 3-4 other tents over the years, I can say it was more like an hour on our first try. After that I’m sure we could improve to half an hour, although 15 minutes seems a tad ambitious!
Clearly the weight of the thing, despite a great carry case, is such that this is only ever going to be very short distances from the car. Sure you can comfortably pull it over flat surfaces, but realistically these aren’t to be found much beyond a carpark.
My minor concern is the built in “temporary hooks” that double up as the base attach for the poles, are literally 3-4 inch pieces of metal that have no covering, and get rolled up into the tent lining when it gets put away. I’m almost certain at some point, one of these will catch the tent in such a way, by the laws of chance, and punch a hole straight through. I hope I’m wrong. Otherwise can’t fault i
Go camping every year and wanted a larger standing tent, so purchased this. The tent was super easy to put up and very big inside. The tent held up very well in the torrential rain of North Wales. The rain was pretty bad and even the grass underneath the tent started to flood with pools of water, but the bottom of the tent held up really well as there were no leakages which was great. There was only a very small area where I found a few drops of rain inside the tent but apart from that it was perfect. It’s very well ventilated with the mesh windows but can get chilly at night during colder temperatures but it was a lot colder than expected for the end of July. Can’t wait to use it again on our next trip.
Tent is absolutely massive, very simple to set up and take down, but gets Very cold of a night as it’s like 80% mesh.
I’d recommend this to anyone who wants a bit more room while camping
So easy to put up. Up in 10 minutes with to people. Clear instructions with colour coding, makes it so simple. Loads of space inside. The head room is amazing. Withstood heavy rain showers without leaking. Great ventilation, so very little condensation.
Used this for the first time last weekend. We had help putting it up but could easily do it with two people, possibly one if you are clever. We had a lot of wind and everything held up beautifully. I would recommend replacing the stakes which are the usual lightweight aluminium that comes with most tents. We had no rain so I can’t attest to its water resistance yet. Overall I’m very happy with my purchase.
For the money, this is excellent value. It’s like a tipi, but lighter & more portable with the handy case, and dries out easier as it’s a tent. Other tunnel tents we looked at were much smaller for same price.
We were super impressed with how fast it was to put up- we were being a bit slow on our first attempt making sure we knew what everything did, so took maybe 45 mins. But I would honestly now say 10-15 mins now we know what to do. Really easy, and no threading bars through fabric at all.
The only downside was the design with separate top cover (necessary for windows) meant there was a draught and it got really cold at night – so bring proper sleeping bags (we only brought a duvet). The flip side is the ventilation and windows are so lovely in the day – so swings and roundabouts!
Super pleased overall, our friend said it’s like a hotel room (once we inflated our deep inflatable mattress) – which is true! We fit our double inflatable mattress, full size travel cot and bags, with plenty of room to spare – probably enough for two single roll out beds if needed.
Just come back from the first time camping in this tent and so happy with it. Love the way it looks, how easy it is to put up and take down, the door is great as it’s a velcro opening as well as a zip, east for kids when they are back and for. Had a raised blow up double airbed in the and so much left over room , it’s view and ventilation is great when you have the sides open and lovely closed at night time. Can’t wait to camp again now, slept amazing, weather was great but I think it will be more than OK in rain and winds. My camping buddies loved this tent too especially for the price
Firstly I love the tent, easy to put up and spacious once in. Blackout room divider and walls means you can sleep in past sunrise!!
But I purchased mine from amazon warehouse in a “used – Like New” condition so I wasn’t happy to find once I put it up (after the returns window had passed as I’d purchased in January) that the tent pegs were missing, it has definitely been used as full of leaves and two of the fibreglass poles had been snapped. Poor quality checking from the teams in the warehouse there, this item is solidly in the “Used – Good” category so I do feel like I was slightly ripped off.
If you like the look of this tent I would recommend it- not for the 8 people it says it can hold though!! Spacious enough for glamping for two and three of you’re pals. Could probably fit 4 adults but it’s would be cozy and you’d lose much of the living space. Do shop around as it’s often on sale for ~300
4 stars for the tent as a whole, it can be a bit breezy inside without the room divider in as the windows are mesh and there’s nothing protecting between the doorway hole and the first windows if you don’t have the divider in place.
I have been buying Coleman’s tents for years and have never been let down. I have only just set this one up briefly in the garden to check how long it takes to put up (20 mins)and to see size and height. Very pleased with the size but would say it’ll be more comfortable with 4/5 adults. 6-8 would be possible but it’d be “cozy. As for height this is the tent I’ve been dreaming off and as a 65 year old no more crawling about. So far so good.
Superb glamping tent easy to erect with colour co-ordinated poles, it took my wife and I only 15 minutes. Our first camping adventure was on a farm in the Brecon Beacons and it withstood the elements very well in the 30mph gust’s and torrential rain not a drop of water got inside, however our awning was demolished by the weather. The air circulation inside the tent is spot on as there was no condensation in the morning. There are 2 useful storage pockets inside for your gadgets and the hinged door is a nice touch. The tent was easy to pack away and it actually fitted back in the bag.
The only thing I didn’t like was there are no power hookup intakes but there are ways around this.
I’ve used this tent twice. The first time the weather was beautiful and it was extremely cool when you open the windows. It got a bit cold during the night. The second time was at the lakes and it rained non stop, it handled the wind well and didn’t let any water in at all, just make sure your rain cover isn’t touching the actual tent and it should be fine.
It won’t do you much good outside of late Spring/ Summer but if you’re on a family trip over the warmer months it’s the perfect tent.
There’s plenty space inside for a double air bed and some chairs. If you’re all using sleeping mats you might get 8 in but it would be tight.
I’d also get a warmer sleeping bag in case it does get a bit chilly during the night and if it’s too warm, use it as a blanket.
Assembly is easy enough although extremely awkward to do alone as it needs balancing and you have to be careful otherwise you’ll bend the poles. If there’s two of you, you should have it up in about 25 minutes.
Overall ideal summer family tent.
We were happy with this tent.
It’s a shame there isn’t more options to block out some of the light.
The door rod broke after the end of our 4 night trip. Moreover, the door is poorly thought out with respect to implementation. It needs to be able to be held open, rather than flap around.
However, overall, the tent is very well constructed.
The tent is easy to set up and pack away.
The is plenty of room for two camping beds and a few furniture items, e.g. camping table etc; and room to move around inside all corners of the tent, without having to stoop down to do so.
The tent can allow lots of ventilation possibilities but as I say, you might want to consider bringing some other form of light blocking material to stop those early morning sunrises breaking your sleep too soon.
We recommend this tent.
Good starter tent. Simple to put up. Simple colour coded poles. Withstood night of wind and rain with no leaks.
Negative point is once the sides are closed when raining, feels very enclosed and if door is open rain can drop inside doorway.
Struggled to get back into original bag once used. As other reviewers mentioned stitching on case is weak so I now use two large bags to pack.
Great purchase though. Recommend
I bought this tent because I liked the design and it has some good reviews. The tent was used for a few days holiday in Wales in late June. Unfortunately the weather turned wet and windy one night but thankfully It just about lasted out. It was rolling around a fair bit when the weather was at its worst during the night and a constant drip of water inside the tent on the floor near the door frame didnt help . Some re-pegging during the night was needed when the wind was at its worst. I bought extra strong pegs to tie it down which helped get it through the night and might be something to think about if you are purchasing this tent.
I think if the weather is ok and not too wet or windy in the Summer months this tent would probably be fine to use.
It certainly looks the part and has a nice design but I definitely wouldn’t use it in the UK or northern Europe in winter as the material is too thin.
We are so happy with this tent. It is easy to put up, as it’s all Colour coordinated and easily clicks in place, although you may need someone tall to Help you put the outer layer over the top. It is spacious, waterproof (rained heavily one day and no leaks or water inside at all), and it doesn’t feel like you’re camping! My husband is 6f6″ tall, and this is the only tent he has used that he can fully stand up in. The main door is great and it’s nice to have the 2 doors and the divider for if it’s ever needed.
The only negative thing I could possibly say about it, is its quite difficult to roll it up small enough to fit back in the bag neatly. We watched YouTube videos to find the best way, but once you’ve done it a couple of times it’s alright.
Overall, this is a fab tent, and is the envy of many.
I bought this one for my camping with my family (2 adults and 2 school kids). We’ve slept 5 nights in two different grounds (desert, grass) and this is a masterpiece.
Pros:
Lots of space. 4 people can sleep their throughing all their stuff unorganized on the floor and still have plenty of space. 6 people will do this easily as well. 8 people can be challenging, but achievable.
Easy assembling (10 minutes). Poles are well marked in colours so even if you have two left hands like I do you’ll find it easy to assemble. You can actually assemble this tent by your own, buy an extra person is always 2 additional hands.
Great door system which enables you to enter and exit as many times as you wish (like my boy does) smoothly.
Trolly. You won’t have to carry this (heavy) tent but you can use its trolly wheels and it is great.
Sleep with no cover: being in a war, desert night environment, we preferred not to add the cover so a slight wind could easily enter the tent making it a tent and not a sauna.
Cons:
It is extremely difficult to put it all in back in the case.
Pegs were impossible to use in the desert ground. I know that the problem is the ground, but the Manufacturer should be aware of this.
All in all, my expectations are that this product will last 10 years and this is definitely met my high expectations.
So far this tent has been fine I haven’t had bad weather to comment on the waterproofness but the tent is easy to assemble especially if you what a couple of videos first. The main problem I have found is with the bag it comes with which has ripped completely with minimal force being applied only the third time I put the tent away and it split with the zipper lining tearing away from the bag lining I wasn’t even pulling the zip I was just pulling the bag shut. The bag is very important to be able to transport the tent so why has it been made of such poor materials?
A great tent, was fairly easy to put together following the colour coding system. Instructions given are some what basic, it is printed on sewn on label’s just inside the bag, folding the tent back up to fit the bag was tad tricky, however there are tutorial’s how on You Tube. Highly recommend lying something on the floor, it get’s super cold at night. From using the tent, I would say this is more of a general use, come basic camping as the side panels are mesh, even though there is a fly over sheet to go over the top (from experiences, we recommend placing it on top of the tent when it is partially assembled.) does get rather draughty especially during the night time. Spacing required for this Coleman tent approx 20/30ft + square, for our small garden we managed it just, however was not able fully spread out the tent line’s properly, in some cases missed out many of the peg’s. Tip. To cut down on trip hazard’s, use lighting around the rope’s. Inside the tent their is a hook to hang a tent light, on either side are couple of tent pocket’s which is very handy, like wise the privacy screening (which can be added if needed.) Not sure how 8 people could squeeze in this Coleman tent, certainly at a push depending on person’s size could at a squash fit in six, ideally space wise the tent is more suited for four people with spare room.
POSITIVES (in my opinions);
*Has a lovely, sturdy storage case on wheels, making it easy to transport.
* It was very easy to assemble with colour coded tent poles.
* It’s very spacious.
*It was able to withstand two evenings of high winds & heavy downpours.
* It’s an overall lovely looking tent
NEGATIVES (in my opinion);
* The material on the inner lining tore after a few hours of being up. This was not due to any tugging. This was the one thing I read in other comments before I made my purchase that caused me concern so I’m pretty annoyed it happened.
*It’s not so easy to re-pack into the lovely storage holdall.
Good tent, and we are happy.
This isn’t my first tent, but I chose to buy this one as I’m 6’2″ and am sick of stooping in tents! It’s nice and tall inside (but the top of the door is still low) and feels spacious. The proper opening door is fantastic. We use a bungee cord to hold it open if we need to, as it does always close itself.
We had quite a bit of rain on one night, but it performed great, no issues.
Putting it up is very easy. Much less stressful than fibre glass poled tents. I put it up and take it down on my own with no hassles. It’s easiest to put the poles in, then drape the outer sheet over before lifting and sitting the poles in the base. Throwing the top sheet over can be tricky on your own. With two people it’s a doddle (use the guy lines).
There ISN’T an inlet for a power cable to come in, which is disappointing. We didn’t have electric on our first trip, but we have on the next. It may have to just come through the door, but as the zips ONLY meet halfway up, the cable will probably pull the bottom zip down. It’s not ideal.
It comes with groundsheet style door mats which is a nice touch, but there is no groundsheet/footprint available. And with British camping, I’d recommend one. I bought a 3.5m tarpaulin from Toolstation for a fiver which does the job, it’s just fractionally too small, but it keeps the base dry and protected.
The pegs supplied are actually good! A real surprise for a tent to have good pegs as standard.
There are loops on two corners and the centre of the roof, to fit the divider, but it would have been handy to have the loops on ALL corners to give you a choice of position, and to be used to hang other things like lights.
It is a very bright tent. Great for us, but be aware of that, if you want a darker tent (there is a blackout version available).
Now, the tents only major downside. Temperature. If you’re camping in the warm summer days, it’s fantastic. It is incredibly well ventilated, especially when you open up the window “curtains”. But I wouldn’t take this tent on a cold trip (early spring etc) as air constantly flows under the outer tent (which doesn’t touch the ground), and the inner tent is mainly just mesh. It was chilly one night and it woke us all up. There’s no way to warm the tent up, so take extra layers!
Delivery was a little complicated but was remedied very promptly by Amazon customer service & UPS. Assembly: takes a while but this was our first time in a good few years & we are older! Therefore, I reckon it was our ineptitude rather than the procedure being complicated. It is full height all around inside – there is no stooping – a huge plus if one is older or has mobility problems. We have a king size air bed which fits perfectly with ample floor space left for camping equipment…etc. There are two handy pockets incorporated into the wall of the tent. The hinged door is pretty cool idea except there is no way of keeping this open (well none that we have come across). There is a second door which can be kept open. The middle partition is superfluous to our needs, but does offer some privacy if required. Our tent has been erected in the garden for the past week and a half. We have had the usual summer weather: very heavy rain & a lot of wind. It remained stable, completely dry with no dampness inside. Very pleased with this Coleman tent it really offers a ‘glamping experience!’
Easy to assemble. Put up in garden before we took camping. Didn’t realise the weather overnight. Tipped over because we didn’t use the guyropes but just tipping over bent some of the poles. So not that sturdy.
We bent the poles back. Took camping. Used all the guyropes. It withstood a week long storm. Fast winds. Thunder. Lightening. Hail. Torrential rain. No leaks. No moving.
great tent.
Great in size. bought this for two people as we wanted more glamping style of camping. we didn’t want a sleeping tent and a storage tent. This tent is big enough to use the separator down the middle. And have a LARGE double blow up bed on one side. With room around it. And the second side for a lounge and storage.
Literally a massive tent.
We basically had a studio flat as a tent.
My 6 foot partner could stand up straight no problem.
Another downside, Is that because most of the underlayer of tent (the main part of the tent) is all netting due to the windows. In the evenings it doesn’t keep any heat. So even when you go camping in the summer. You’ll still need to wear around 50 layers because there is no warmth at all in that tent at night. You will literally freeze.
Bought this tent for a festival as my old tent had become worn out and I wanted something I could entertain in.
The Cortes Octagon 8 certainly hit the spot. On the Friday of arrival at the festival site (in beautiful Blessington, Wicklow, Dublin, Ireland) rain was light, the weather was warm and the sun was even breaking through the clouds.
Not having read the setup instructions in advance (or even yet tbh) it took about 20 minutes to pitch on my own. Once the music ended, I and 15 of my closest friends were able to party in the tent (yes, 16 people partying inside) until dawn.
The sun was splitting the stones on Saturday but we were comfortable in the tent with the windows(?) open. Closing them in the early evening the tent remained warm and comfortable for the night in spite of rising winds and a steady increase in rain.
On the Sunday, we had driving rain and gale force winds until 9pm, The main stage of the festival had been shut down by 5pm (though all other stages remained open). Once I adjusted the (sturdy) pegs the tent remained firmly anchored to the ground and provided shelter for our neighbours who needed rescue from their cheap popup tents. The only damage we sustained was a slight buckling of one of the poles by the door, which was easy to fix later.
I recommend this tent for parties and festivals in the summer, or where it’s warm. For 4 season use modifications would be needed (addition of doorway coverings to the outer skin and an insulating layer between the inner and outer skins would make this a very effective, lightweight and portable yurt.
The tent itself is pretty great. I love it to be honest. It took a couple of times putting it up to learn how to do it, but then its really easy, and one person can do it – I’m five foot tall and I did it alone – but it is significant easier and faster with two people. It is fully waterproof, as evidenced by camping in pouring rain on a beach on the Isle of Mull and in the Lake District. It gets lots of admiring comments from other campers too
One negative was the storage bag the tent arrived in was torn around the zip when it arrived. I don’t know how anyone could ever get this tent and all the poles etc in that small storage bag anyway, so I’d say the wheeled storage bag was a waste of time, for me anyway. A second negative is that the inner dividing (very flimsy) curtain is really not very good. It doesn’t reach the floor – there is a several inch gap at the bottom that I don’t understand at all…. it doesn’t attach to the main tent properly and when unzipped down the centre, there is no way to hold the the two halves clipped back.
Our tunnel tent was starting to wear out so decided to grab one of these when it was heavily discounted at the end of the summer. Was a bit unsure about switching from our serious-camper, sober green, 4 man tent to a bright orange mini-big top, but once it was erected (quickly, in half darkness) and we spread ourselves out in it, no going back. Just two drawbacks – interior is dominated by a dark grey floor fabric and is pretty cavernous, which means that it’s very hard to illuminate – even with two really bright lanterns, still feels pretty dark. There’s also very little hope of warmth at the start or end of the season when it’s nippier, because the inner tent is very perforated (about 50% of the wall area is mesh) and the outer tent has two wide open areas in front of the doors (the doors are in the inner tent), with air circulating freely between these openings and the gap between inner and outer tent – so there’s no prospect of keeping the interior warm when it’s chill outside. Still a fantastic tent for mild weather. The headroom, the views out, the space – all fabulous
I am completely in love with this tent.
I should begin by mentioning that it is still fairly new so I can’t comment on wear and tear over time, but I can say a few things:
– it is a beautiful thing. It stands out from the crowd. It’s colourful and original and with the windows open it feels like a gazebo, and I can’t get enough of the door that opens like a real door!
– Coleman are a trusted brand for a reason. Within a couple of uses, this tent has been put through it’s paces and come out with top marks. It has survived strong winds, torrential rain, hailstones the size of marbles and a muddy river flowing underneath it making walking on the groundsheet feel like walking on a waterbed. No leaks whatsoever. Totally dry inside.
– little things matter… like high quality tent pegs that don’t bend as soon as they feel stone, and a hook in the centre to hang up a lamp
– it is SO easy to put up and take down
– it is big. I’m a tall girl and love the fact I can walk around the WHOLE of the inside with a lot of headroom to spare. That being said, you’re only going to fit 8 people sleeping in it if you have a separate space for cooking outside of the tent. I like to set it up with the curtain in the middle to separate it into a sleeping space and a cooking/eating space. I set my camp kitchen up like a home-kitchen… a table for washing up, a table for my 2 camp stoves, a shelving unit for storage, and a double fold out seat in the living area, and that leaves room in the sleeping area for… comfortably, no more than 3 people I’d say. We had 2 people and a puppy bed last trip. That was pretty spacious.
This review has been written after a week of camping in Cornwall. Weather in that week has been as follows; extreme heat, extreme windy conditions, extreme rain and all of the above at once…
I know nothing about the water proofing levels. So after reading people’s feedback saying it was 2000 whatever instead of 3000 as other tents, I bought a most seller water proofing spray on amazon and sprayed its flysheet after erecting it to test it. It was a 10 mins job. So my review does not reflect the original water proofing of this tent.
It stood up well in crazy wind where you’d doubt you make it through the night. I pegged not only the corners of the groundsheet but also the windows/flaps very well with a hammer. Water did not enter from anywhere BUT THROUGH THE THE ZIPS. there are flaps over the zips but because it was windy, the flaps’ velcro bits, which should be top to bottom rather than 3 little patches, flapped and water made its way through the zips. Now when I say water I mean a few little drops on the floor. But when you think about 6 set of zips, it is 6 sets of tiny droplets which may splash on things that should avoid water but we were OK really.
During the heat, the windows gave a nice airy space when needed. People said it was breezy at night as window nets let cold air in considering there is a gap between them and the flysheet but in a sleeping bag, well wrapped up- we didn’t feel anything. Our very little son wasnt bothered either.
It is very spacious and easy to set up- even by one person. You may want to watch videos on youtube if unsure but you cant go wrong with colour coding. Fly sheet may be a bit of a hassle trying to put over a very high tent once erected. But there are easy ways (youtube videos) of doing it. After all, I would suggest this tent for heavy campers as wel as first timers- families and small groups.
We haven’t used the room divider as we liked the feeing of its big open space.
It also has two mats which we used as indoor shoe mats by the two entrances.
I have read people moaning that water goes down the flysheet and through the doors when it rains. I found two solutions to this:
1- keep the damn doors closed. It is still airy enough with everything zipped up anyway.
2- give it a punch or two (on the doors) and wait for 5-10 seconds for water droplets to flow down before entering/leaving the tent.
My problem was putting it back into its carrier bag after using it!! It happened but took a while… practice made it better. But it was a hassle for me.
Hope this review helps if you’re in doubt about this product.
I gave a lot of thought to purchasing this tent and read the reviews and specs very carefully. Now I’ve had a chance to use it, I am very pleased I bought it. In spite of its large size, setting the tent up is easy and straightforward, though it is not something I would like to have to do single-handedly in a strong wind. Once erected, the steel frame is rock steady and the internal space it provides is amazing – the comfort and luxury of all-round standing height is such a pleasure and the tent still had plenty of space to move around in even after I set up a double bed, inflatable sofa and two tables. The rigid, hinged door is marvellous – why don’t all tents have them? The greatest attraction about this tent though is the all round windows as I simply hate being enclosed in a giant bag. The upper half of the inner lining is mesh which means when the outer skin sections are tied back you have perfect visibility of the outside. Moreover, because it is mesh the air circulates freely through it and, for the first time ever, I was able to sit comfortably cool inside my tent with the sun shining and all the bugs were all shut out. This is not a tent I would like to use in winter as this same air circulation through the mesh of the inner would make it uncomfortably draughty at night, but as someone said, it is big enough to have a pop-up tent inside if you wanted a completely draught-free sleeping compartment. I am looking forward to using my Octagon again for the rest of this summer’s camping.
