We got one these a year back and we’ll impressed with results. This past week bought a second. The fans are so neat and unobtrusive – and having both allows us to distribute warm air in two directions! Happy customer.
The fan itself is nice and sturdy and works absolutely fine but I am just not sure it actually makes much of a difference. We have quite a big room and I find the wood burner takes some time to heat the room so I thought we would try using one of these. I have positioned it as instructed and if I put my hand in front of it, I can feel the warm air but I don’t feel that overall it helps in heating the room any faster or better.
I needed a small one because I don’t have much of a gap between the top of my stove and the register plate.
Our stove is recessed in a deep hearth and although it always looked cosy it didn’t chick out much heat. With one fan there was a huge improvement. I bought a second and we are snug as a bug in a rug.
I’ve have given it 4* for heat distribution because it is so small but if you can’t accommodate a big one that’s the laws of physics for you. It emits literally no heat – it’s not supposed to. Why Amazon would ask for a rating on that .
It seems reasonably well built – the blades need to be lightweight so they wouldn’t take any abuse, but in a typical location for use I think they are robust enough.
I’ve had quite a small stove installed hence requiring a small fan. The 1st one I purchased required a gentle nudge for it to spin. It was only when I purchased a 2nd fan for the other side of the stove I realised that the fan works automatically. I’ve returned the 1st fan and replaced it with a 3rd which has also started to work without my intervention. I’ve read quite a few reports about the longevity of the fans – only time will tell.
I purchased this little fan in February, 2020 and decided to see how it performed daily for at least 3 months before submitting my review. So in essence, the fan has now been spinning for an average of 14 hours per day, for at least 90 consequtive days, spending a total of 1,260 hours spinning.
Did it live up to my expectations?
1) Reliability has proved to be 100% satisfactory. This unit has without fail, started to spin soon after lighting our Aga Little Wenlock Stove, usually between 5pm and 6pm each night. It runs very quietly, and impressively is still running at 8am the next morning, even when the stove has gone out. (But then this stove is cast iron so retains its heat several hours after the fire has extinguished.)
2) It has always been quiet in operation, such that my wife and I don’t even hear it spinning.
3) Crucially on performance: This aspect, is where I give the product maximum points! Its small blades spin quickly, and although it is no way comparable to a 240 volt mains powered fan, the improvement of heat circulation from our little stove is very noticeable. The impact is very subtle. With our stove mounted in the alcove of what was an open fire previously, a lot of the stove heat dissipated into the surrounding bricks. With this little fan doing its job, that heated air now flows gently into our lounge.
4) Testing performance: Two little aspects convinced me that this fan was delivering improved heating performance:
Firstly was placing the fan on one top corner of the stove, and standing in it’s hardly noticeable draft, then standing at the other corner of the stove, (no draft), comparing warmth, on a cold night. It felt much warmer standing where the fan was aimed.
Secondly, our double length lounge (heated only by our little stove and a double radiator each end), warmed up much quicker, with the TRV valves of the radiators cutting off their heat much earlier than prior to using the stove fan.
Conclusion for me: This product scores my maximum points, which is 10 out of 10.
Final consideration regarding use, and noise:
I have noted that some folks have reported noise in use. One aspect that will cause undue noise is if the unit is not seated properly flat before use. With our Aga Little Wenlock stove, the top is not flat, as it has some cosmetic ridges etc. So for that reason, it is a must to experiment initially when positioning the device, to ensure that it will not rock, ie. it needs to be seated in a stable position. This was a two minute job for me though, and not an issue.
I will likely be purchasing a second one of these units before next winter, to have one on each side of our stove.
Our stove is quite small so I went for this because there wasn’t space on the top for a larger fan. The first time I tried it I wondered if the stove would reach a sufficient temperature to get the fan to spin up, but actually it did quite easily. It is important to install it in the correct place though, which is at the side of the stove.
Once spinning up you can feel the air moving and it deflects a sheet of paper, which is as much as I’d expect of it.
You do have to have realistic expectations here: the room does not instantly become warmer than before. The fan does, though, help to stir the air and move the warm air away from the stove and into the rest of the room. The difference is subtle, but I think it is there. A bigger fan might have more benefit, but as mentioned above I don’t have space for one.
The only downside is that when it’s up at full speed there’s a little bit of noise. Typically you can’t really hear it over a TV, but it can be noticeable when there isn’t much sound in the room.
I’ve been relatively immobile for the last month due to a leg injury. That meant that I have spent hours on my computer, which is at the far end of a 30′ sitting room, barricaded off by a settee. My wood burning stove is set in the side of one of the long walls, in an old fireplace, in the other end of the room.
The office bit never really felt the benefit of the heat from the stove, but I have a lot of blankets.
I’d never heard of stove fans, but investigated and ordered one of these. OMG!
What a difference! My office bit is now warm, and so is the rest of the bottom floor of the house!
Only had for a week or so, so will update re durability.
A stove using just naturally rising warm air to circulate heat into the room is moving air very slowly. Air therefore insulates the stove holding the heat in or near to the stove.
This little fan generates it’s own electricity, using the stove’s heat absorbed through the base. That powers a small electric motor, which drives the blades of the fan (from about 5o degrees C) the speed increases as the stove gets hotter. The heat output is FAR, FAR better than I expected. It really is like a turbocharger, once the stove is hot it really shifts air.
My wife was ‘reluctant’, worried that the fan would detract from the look of the stove, but this one is small and unobtrusive, you hardly notice it.., partly because the best site for it is on top, at the back of the stove where it draws cooler air, protecting the motor wires from excessive heat, and blowing air over the stove’s hot surface. It has gained my wife’s approval.
The motor and blades are necessarily light, but the frame surrounding them is solid and sturdy protection.
Before owning the fan we used to gradually open the lounge door and heat the house as heat from the stove increased. Now the door is open much faster, the jumpers come off and we use less wood.
I don’t hear the fan unless I listen hard… The only noise problem comes from elderly relatives snoring as they get too snug! I’m glad I didn’t get anything bigger, I do recommend it and would certainly replace it if necessary.
We have a small multi fuel burner in an alcove/fireplace, so was interested in moving the heat in the alcove into the room. We’d seen these before, but not tried one. As the height from the top of the burner to the plate was small we needed a small fan to fit the space. So read the reviews placed the odrer and this was delivered quicker than originally stated. So the first time we used it we were impressed. I’d seen a review on amazon of a similar product online where the user had cut a strips of paper to show the air movement. So we did similar and it showed the air movement into the room. You could also feel the movement on your face, moving from one side of the burner to the fan assisted side. So happy with the investment and looking forward to a warmer room or reduction in fuel being used. Happy days !
