Note: This review is based on my personal experience with the Klein Tools CL220 Digital Clamp Meter and reflects my honest and unbiased opinion.
The no touch voltage detector is a bit too sensitive but that’s good if you are not a trained electrical person. (Always test before you touch). The clamp on ammeter is easy to use and is more accurate than the other meters in this price range. The voltage reading is RMS and has a high sample rate for any 60hz circuit testing. The temperature test is just a rough induction and has a2% swing over 0 to 100 degC. Continuity testing is good all round.
On the whole a great meter for the money.
I ordered this to use for work & it’s great so far. I used it many times during an extra long work week. It was easy for me to figure out. And the auto turn off feature helps save battery.
Measures AC current and NCVT via clamp and AC/DC voltage, resistance, and continuity via test-leads, and temperature with thermocouple
Non-contact voltage tester integrated into the clamp jaw
Backlit LCD for ease of viewing in low light
Automatically ranging True Root Mean Squared (TRMS) measurement technology for accuracy
Easy to use, and works well. The backlit display USC’s huge plus, as each time I’ve so far had to use this, it seems to have been in an unlit and dark corner. Very pleased!
I needed a new meter and Fluke is very proud of their product so I didn’t want to spend that much. I know Klein has a good reputation for tools as I have been using them for years so I figured I’d try out their meter/amp probe. I have been very satisfied with it and have nothing negative to say about it or the seller. I would recommend this one to anyone needing a new meter.
The multimeter has a certain feeling of build quality that cheaper ones don’t have, a bit heavier and better made, but fundamentally it seems to operate the same.
The LCD isn’t that easy to read but it does have a backlight.
There’s enough extra functions on the dial for a clamp meter, they always have less functionality than non clamp ones for some reason.
It has the circuit tester mode which is the important one for most of us, with the usual beep thing.
What’s very useful is the carry case which easily fits the probes too without having to take them off, so you don’t end up getting all tangled up in your tool bag or wherever.
For the price at time of reviewing it’s actually pretty good value.
whilst this is a fairly basic clamp meter, it seems to provide all of the functions which I (as a non-professional) would ever need, such as testing current, voltage and continuity of circuits. It is also very well made and easy to understand as use, both of which are clearly positive attributes.
I was pointed to this specific meter by a friend of mine. For some reason, this meter is the only one that will reliably give an accurate reading on a ground or a neutral wire. I have 3 other amp meters, all by reputable manufacturers in the industry, and not cheapos either. None of them will read with the same accuracy of this unit.
Upon getting it, I tried it against 2 of my other meters at my home, and then at a local factory that I do things for. On the hot wires, all read pretty much the same. On a neutral or ground, the other 2 I have would show 0 or a very low reading. This one would show a realistic and higher number. For example, on a 240 volt single phase 5 HP motor that was running at approximately 60% load, the hot sides read 16.7 amps on all of the meters. but the natural on 2 of them showed 1.2 and 2.4 respectively. This Kline meter showed 9.7 which matched what it should be.
The product.
This is a general purpose multi meter for electricians. It comes with a soft case, test leads, batteries and thermocouple. It comes with basic multi-lingual instructions.
Build quality.
It is well made and the clamp has a very strong spring. The LCD is excellent and easy to read with backlighting for dark areas. It is an American designed and made meter. It has lots of overload features and is auto ranging on most inputs.
In use.
We have been using this to test through caravans for safety testing for when we can finally get back to opening again. The clamp readings are accurate. The continuity tester part has also been useful to test our low voltage systems in the vans. It has been a very useful meter to have around and the LCD is so easy top read even in very poor lighting.
Overall.
A very accurate and useful clamp meter. Good build and very accurate. No problems recommending this product.
Super easy to use for the experienced. With good instructions for the less experienced. This is a good piece of kit. Works the way any ordinary multimetre would. But also with the added feature of the clamp meter.
The clamp negates the need to break into a circuit to check for voltage/current. You can simply put the clamp close to, or around your power source and it gives you the readings you require.
As you can see by my demo. It’s pretty simple to use. I have tried this on all sorts from bulbs, cables, AC and DC and it seems to work just fine.
I tested the wands on a known complete circuit to test the continuity check which worked absolutely A ok.
There is one last feature to talk about which is the hold button. Extremely useful feature. It allows you to keep your reading on the screen. Handy Andy.
So. Does this get 5*?
Yep it does. It’s an inexpensive but highly functional fluke.
If you found the review/pics/vid helpful. Please let me know by hitting the helpful button. It would mean a lot.
This has been brilliant. I’ve used it a few times now from testing dead switch spurs, checking the voltage on my car battery and using the volt indicator to trace live cables.
It’s easy to use and comes with straight forward instructions to get you going if you need them. The probe leads are great and come with the usual removable tips to reveal more probe for deeper to reach connections.
The light up led display is very clear and easy to read. It has an auto off built in so if you forget to switch the selector dial back to off, the tester will turn the screen off after a period of time for you to save battery life.
The handy carry/ storage case is great and has room for the tester and a little pouch to keep the leads in to keep them tidy.
Really pleased with this and the quality is everything I’ve come to expect from Kline tools.
For reference, I am an IT Technician and have been using this device to measure the current when doing cable runs and diagnosing problems along the way. I am probably using a fraction of what is possible with this device but needed a tool to give me an accurate reading. I am going to break it down into simple positives and negatives.
Accurately measures current and voltage — I verified this by plugging a few cables into a UPS and comparing the Amps and Volts via the readouts.
Carry case — It comes supplied with a carry case which is really handy when out and about on a job and it also helps me not lose the accessories.
Comes with a set of leads — Most of the time I usually carry around a Fluke voltmeter but since getting this I haven’t had to because this combines two tools in one. Very helpful.
Backlit display — The display is LED-backlit which is really helpful when I needed to check cables high up in the ceiling
Auto shut off — My only negative and it’s more of a nit-pick is that the auto shut off is 15 minutes. I wish this could be configured to allow longer or shorter times. There were a couple of times when I could have really used it being longer.
Overall, as I said before I am not pushing this product to its limits but for me, in a commercial environment its worked great and hasn’t let me down yet. It’s a tool that adds extra functionality over a voltmeter whilst only being a little bit bigger in size. So, for me, it’s a no brainer.
My son-in-law is an avid DIYer and electrician, and is very impressed with this clamp meter from Klein. When you’re dealing with electrics you need to use a reliable brand, as your safety is in their hands, and Klein is a reliable market leader in this space.
This clamp meter is ideal for professional or amateur alike and is robustly made (it can even be dropped and still work!), with straight-forward controls and easy to read LCD screen, with a handy backlight to view the screen in all work environments. The clamp meter provides all the functionality that you need for testing current, voltage and circuit continuity.
This is a good quality and safe clamp meter, which in my book is well worth the money.
The tool itself is very well made and functions pretty accurately within its range, which is the most important thing. The reverse contrast display is more easily read, but the timeout feature can seem pretty short sometimes. I wonder if that could be adjusted. Just remember, you will have to spend a few more to get a decent case and a magnetic clip – ease of use also includes physically positioning the thing. The new case is garbage. The older ones were lined and more durable, and the meter also had an embedded magnet. Overall though, it is a very good meter.
This is a good quality AC clamp meter that would be suitable for AC work on residential properties, and maybe even be of use on some commercial properties. I am a hobbyist but I do minor electrical work and repairs so can appreciate and understand an instrument like this.
Pros:
– Good solid build quality – should survive a few years
– Display update interval is fast
– K-type thermocouple supplied
– Display backlight
– Seems to be accurate when compared to a fluke meter
– Storage case supplied
Cons:
– No diode test mode
The meter arrived well packaged and includes everything you need to get started including the batteries and a storage case to keep everything together. It is very well built and does not feel cheap or flimsy.
It is Cat III rated and supplied with the appropriate test leads that have the safety caps around the probe tips, which are removeable. Should be suitable for all domestic mains work and some commercial work. The leads are of good quality for a meter at this price range.
Features are good for an AC clamp meter and it is easy to use. It is almost good enough to use as a general purpose meter for electrical repair on battery powered devices as well but the lack of a diode test mode means it will not fully suit. The temperature measurement probe came in handy when I was checking for draught around the floor in my home.
The non contact voltage tester is useful as a quick “is this circuit dead” test when working on AC mains circuits (ALWAYS confirm using a second meter or a lamp set for safety reasons!). It seems fairly sensitive and can sense the AC field through a light switch plate or a wall socket front.
I found all of the ranges to be accurate, and the fast display update rate is very welcome.
Overall I am impressed with this meter and feel that it deserves 5 stars.
I have to admit that Klein Tools is not a familiar brand to me however, my experience with this clamp meter has demonstrated to be that they are a manufacturer of robust and reliable tools.
I have also never used a clamp meter before (although I was aware of their existence) and so I needed to familiarise myself with all of the functions before I was able to review this product. For anyone else who might be in a similar position, the main functions are as follows:
– AC Current <400Amps (for measuring the current, in Amps, which is passing through a wire at any given point in time. I was somewhat surprised by the readings which this feature provided, as the reading, in Amps, seemed incredibly low e.g. a kettle showed a reading of 0.012Amps - I'm not sure if I just wasn't using it right?)
- AC/DC Voltage <600 Volts (for measuring the voltage, in Volts, across a circuit. For me, this is particularly useful for measuring the voltage in a car battery, to ensure that the battery can be maintained effectively, particularly in winter and when cars are less likely to be driven as far in lockdown)
- Resistance <20M (for measuring the resistance, in Ohms, of a circuit. Clearly, a lower resistance is generally better than a higher resistance, as resistance turns power into heat. As such, this may help identify weak spots in the wiring or joints, which provide higher than expected resistance. The wiring must not be powered up when this test is run.)
- Continuity (for identifying whether a circuit has any breaks in it, such that it will not operate. This is particularly useful for identifying broken wires and joints in complex wiring systems. A continuous circuit is indicated by a beep.)
- Temperature <446F/230C (for measuring the temperature, in Celsius or Fahrenheit, of a particular surface.)
This particular clamp meter is very easy to operate and I found the instructions to be very concise and straightforward. The LCD display is also large enough to be able to see the various readings provided and incorporates a back light, which can be turned on and off, depending on the environment it is being used in. Perhaps an additional handy feature might have been the inclusion of a torch, when working in the dark however, perhaps this would have made the design too bulky, due to requiring larger batteries (it takes 3 x AAA batteries) etc.
Klein Tools make a number of different versions of clamp meters and for me, it wasn't particularly easy to determine what the significant differences were. However, as far as I can determine, this is a fairly basic model (CL220), with very few additional features, other than those which have been listed above.
As far as the quality of the meter goes, it feels very strong and robust - indeed it claims to offer protection when dropped from a height of 2 metres however, I didn't try this out, just in case it didn't work!
In summary, whilst this is a fairly basic clamp meter, it seems to provide all of the functions which I (as a non-professional) would ever need, such as testing current, voltage and continuity of circuits. It is also very well made and easy to understand as use, both of which are clearly positive attributes. For anyone who is a bit more specialised in their field, perhaps a more advanced model might be required.
good brand with a good reputation – probably better known in the USA than the U.K.
well priced for those needing occasional use but would suit an electrician with very regular use too.
screen and text are both easy to read with the back-lit screen.
dial is easy to use and intuitive.
has basic features you’d expect but some improvements over similar slightly cheaper alternatives we have used eg trms for greater accuracy, auto power off to preserve batteries.
As this is an occasional use tool for us (working in data centres and computer facilities) the carry case pouch is very useful.
There is very little difference between the CL220 and the CL120 models in price that it makes sense to go for the higher-level model for a noticeable increase in quality and range of functionality.
Easy to use with clear instructions, this is suitable for entry-level professional use (for example an apprentice learning trade) or for the knowledgeable home amateur for hobbyist projects.
Accurate, adaptable, portable, and easy to set up with good longevity.
This is a very well built clamp meter from Klein Tools and I got this for electrical safety and DIY jobs around the house.
It comes with a handy storage bag to provide a bit of protection to it when not in use as well as batteries and connecting probes which is fantastic.
The back-lit LCD screen is easy to read in all lighting conditions and the buttons and rotating selection wheel all feel built for the task. The trigger for opening the clamp up is also nicely weighted .
It provides an excellent electrical safety check as you don’t need to physically touch any live exposed cables or probe anything. Simply clamp around a cable and you will be able to see if an electrical current is running.
I already own a multimeter but I find this is an easier, safer and faster tool to use in my opinion because of that clamping function.
If you are doing jobs involving electrical equipment then I’d say this is a vital tool to have.
My partner has a very similar clamp meter as far as function goes (and has gotten through three other similar ones in the last 5 years or so) but there’s a very noticeable and obvious difference in terms of the weight and build of this model from Klein by comparison – the quality is definitely there and significantly so compared to the many unknown brand/generic models available in the 25-40 quid range. Considering similar features are present then just on build I’d say this is worth the slight extra outlay compared to those ‘disposable’ ones as it seems very likely this will last longer, plus it has the extra options for mounting/hanging which is incredibly useful when working in tight or dimly lit spaces and when you need a minimum of one hand free. This has pretty much all the exact same features as his current one and really the only main difference beyond build and extra hanging/mounting options is a slightly different layout, a bigger and clearer led display and a longer body with a more comfortable grip, which again makes a big difference in the field/on a job. For the function, form and very sturdy build would definitely recommend as it feels built to last and feels like it’s had every detail designed by someone who actually knows what is most useful on the job and feels considerably less disposable than slightly cheaper models.
My husband is an electrician and said this was a godsend to him. He uses it everyday at work and said it’s of very high quality compared to others he’s used before. Works perfectly and a reputable brand. Great product and price.
Workwell for the jobs so far, Handfree abilities due to the clamp at the top. The screen has a light so you can read the screen in small areas with very low light.
This meter seem very versatile. It comes with batteries, a nice carry case, electricity probes, and also a temperature probe. The display itself is easy to read and backlit, so useful when used in tight spaces where you can’t get light.
The main feature of this clamp meter is the ability to detect and read current without actual contact. This is especially useful for detecting where wires are running behind the wall.
Overall this is a very useful tool and the clamp feature gives it that extra versatility in my opinion.
I think this is a fair price for a meter of this quality. The build is a step above the cheapy ones I’ve had before and now I’ve got this I appreciate the difference. This CL220 version has True RMS readings which is handy if you work on anything that might not be a proper sine wave (e.g. solar gear, generators, dimmers, etc) as it will give an accurate reading from those where a non-TRMS meter might not. It also has a thermocouple, but apart from those two features appears pretty much identical to the slightly cheaper CL120.
The NCV sensor being built into the clamp is great as it combines two features I’ve previously only had on two separate meters. The screen is easy to read, the mode dial’s easy to use, and I like the auto-off feature.
This clamp meter CL220 is *not* supplied with batteries (3 x AA required); as usual you need to unscrew the battery compartment to install so a screwdriver is necessary. On opening the packaging, the clamp meter looks robust and well made which I would expect at this price point (51.06 at time of review). I got this for my engineer brother who has tested it for this review. It has a back-lit LED screen of a reasonable size for easy reading, it is straightforward to use and comes with a temperature probe (as not yet tested). It is also a reasonable weight (not too heavy). It is good for the metering of electrical equipment to check if it is working within its current/amp/voltage range, as well as general fault finding. Ideal for the experienced DIYer and apprentice to professional level electrician — a toolbox essential. My brother is happy with this product and would recommend to these groups, but cautions that an amateur not to buy/use it — good electrical knowledge and experience is required when using this meter.
This is amazing, it comes well packaged and includes: easy to read instructions, red and black probes, temperature probe, batteries and the meter which all fit nicely into a very professional carry case.
The meter is well thought out with it being great sized to hold in your hand with a good balance and the selection control wheel is perfectly positioned for your thumb to change as well as the hold side button.
I love the display as its clear to read and if it is a little dark it lights up and makes it even clearer.
The loop is easy to spring load open and if you are using probes it makes a handy hanging hoop to read the measurements, which so far have been spot on.
Overall, I love the tool, the quality and it does way more than I expected.

This clamp meter arrived well packaged, the day after purchasing as promised. It is nicely presented in retail quality packaging making it ideal as a gift and giving you a good first impression of the product inside.
The clamp meter itself has a great build quality, it is very well made from good quality materials and has a very robust, durable overall build.
I work in the IT industry so a clamp meter is a handy piece of kit for me to have around but is not used daily and this is why I opted for one in this price range.
This particular meter is nicely designed with all of the functions easily accessible on a central wheel which click positively into position for each selection. The meter is ergonomically designed to fit comfortably and firmly in your hand when in use. The screen has good sized digits and a backlight making it easy to read even in the darkest of network cabinets/cupboards. It also has a flashlight on the back which is a great addition that I have never had on a clamp meter in the past. The meter comes with a set of two test cables which are also well made and have a cover over both ends to protect both the probe and plug ends. The meter also has a flip out stand at the back enabling you to set it down on the surface and work without having to hold it, leaving both hands free.
The meter takes batteries which are not included and it also has an auto off function which takes it into standby mode if it is idol for longer than 15 seconds, ideal for saving battery power.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with the quality, design and usability of this clamp meter, I was very surprised by the quality and functioning for the price also.
Works perfect for what I use it for. Around the house maintenance including electrical, and HVAC. Seems quite accurate, thermocouples work well enough for dialing in fridge temps and checking HVAC temps (accessories available for more extensive temp testing, but good enough for what I need). Purchased the line splitter as well and works perfectly with that to see what kind of amp draw certain appliances are drawing. Great for electrical panel work as well. Good all around meter for a homeowner who knows what they are doing and can utilize the functionalities for various troubleshooting and electrical upgrades for a more efficient house.

Je devais avoir un lecteur true RMS pour des travaux que je ralisais sur le systme solaire d’un VR.
Si c’tait refaire, je payerais un peu plus et je prendrais le modle CL390 pour avoir les lectures de courant CC et la plage en A.

Well packaged for safe delivery
good brand with a good reputation – probably better known in the USA than the U.K.
well priced for those needing occasional use but would suit an electrician with very regular use too.
screen and text are both easy to read with the back-lit screen.
dial is easy to use and intuitive.
has basic features you’d expect but some improvements over similar slightly cheaper alternatives we have used eg trms for greater accuracy, auto power off to preserve batteries.
