I purchased this as a trial as I have started to get into smoking poultry and I noticed my other charcoal was dying out around 2.5hrs. This stuff is great long lasting and less is more.
To light it I used a chimney put some natural fire lighters at the bottom and stood them up. They have a hole running through the middle that allows for the oxygen to pass through and they light in around 15 minutes. I had to place them once lit as they are pretty thick and ended up having to reposition then as they were too hot. I am pleased with my purchase and will be buying them again once I run out.
Highly recommend this charcoal.
You will not be disappointed easy to light and burns white and clean.
Consistent heat so no need to too move charcoal around
The most high quality hot burning long lasting BBQ fuel charcoal that I have ever encountered.
Lit at 1:30pm hot enough to cook on at 1:50 and was still hot enough to seal meat on at 5:00pm.
Great charcoal for a fireplace but a bit slow for BBQ
I bought a cheap bbq which also serves as a smoker as a retirement (bored!) bit of fun. Tried loads of coals, charcoal, briquettes etc, but they didn’t work. They either weren’t hot enough or didn’t last. These, however, are brilliant. As other reviews have said they are a pain to light (I use a blow torch now) but once lit they are brilliant. Last for hours at high heat. Seem expensive but it’s the weight that makes them good. A big bag of charcoal can be lifted in one hand and light equals quick burn. I think theyre great.
This is the cheaper brand of ogatan charcoal and in my experience works equally well as others based on bamboo and other compacted carbonised woods. This fuel is like marmite – I love it as it has consistent high output for 4 hours, and use it for bbq pizza oven and fire pit. It is easily moved with tongs as solid blocks. They are best lit in a starter cage, and not suited to all
The seller is amazingly responsive to queries in my experience as delivery drivers can drop the heavy boxes a bit, but even if box is battered, the contents are surprisingly resilient.
Also, do consider the binchotan charcoal for cooking bbq or yakitori etc – real solid 90% carbonised large wood pieces – very heavy and condensed and all natural – no smoke and cooks at even higher temperature with more IR benefits.
Absolute beast. Apart from the lighting process there is absolely no complaint. In the picture it has heen 6 hours still very ho
Other than an epic task to light it’s pretty good and lasts a while.
I found this charcoal tremendously difficult to light, after being accustomed to Kamado Joe Big Blocks.
My natural Woodcycle lighters really struggled, whereas three of these would get the KJ Big Blocks blazing in seconds. Adding some small chunks of cheap charcoal finally got things moving, and the coals did burn long after that – my only complaint would be the difficulty getting the fire started in the first place.
*May* work well with a chimney for regular BBQs but cannot recommend for kamado due to the lighting issues.
Great charcoal worth spending the bit extra as burns for ages
These catch quickly, last a really long time, and produce a TON of heat. These got hotter than any charcoal I’ve ever used, and if that’s what you’re after, then you’d be hard pressed to find better. The only slight drawback is that they produced papery, whispy ashes as they disintegrated that floated up and landed on food. Other than that, very nice.
I have bought many boxes of this type of charcoal. It’s easy to light, just stand pieces up in a chimney starter and use which ever fire lighter to light it. It takes 25 mins approximately for it to be ready to use. I have used this on my offset smoker and my Cypriot Foukou which is amazing to cook on. The charcoal lasts for around 6 hours I use a full chimney. I highly recommend these, it takes a couple of goes so you know how much to use. I have barbecued since I was first shown in the 1970s as a child by my father here in the UK. Give them a try. I am a semi retired Head Chef.
It is easy to light, it doesn’t burn quickly so you can use only a few logs to cook a whole meal, really great product. I will definitely buy this again.
Not as dense but weight for weight perform similarly to Big K briquettes.
I haven’t done any long burns to assess whether there is any fall off in extreme situations, but this is definitely a high quality predictable fuel, and not too dusty as it burns.
I like to use lump wood on the bbq so I can quickly add more fuel if needed (unlike if you use briquettes which need preburning)
These burn for a long time and give off an even heat. Great for smoking due to the long burn time
Bought these as alternative to cheap briquettes to use with snake method bbq in Weber. Sustained constant heat temperature throughout cook + very fast. I anticipated about 6-7hr cook for 1.8kg pork belly/rib. Was done in just under 5hrs according to meat thermometer. Juices were running clear after leaving for another half hour. Only 2/3 of snake used + still had coals to seal slices over direct heat.
Very impressed, I think it’s the end for cheap briquettes & charcoal! Mainly powdered ash left at end + no black stained hands when handling briquettes!!
It does the trick, is not wow as for the same money in the past we’ve purchased catering grade charcoal and although it takes more time to light up is not even close, but very decent from a domestic standard, could easily make 2 proper family BBQs out of one batch, it worth a try!
Once they’re up and going, they stay lit for a long time and stay warm but it can take a good while to get them going compared to other briquettes I’ve used.
Really really good charcoal. It takes a bit of practice to get it right, but when you do it’s great stuff to use.
I find the best thing to do is to fill up a chimney starter with coals broken up into fist size pieces, about 3 logs worth. Lay another 3 long logs into the bbq unlit. Then pour the hot coals over them. This way you get good high heat to get the bbq/smoker up to temperature and the long logs will then burn slowly and maintain temperature.
Sure enough after 8 or so hours, they are still going and could go on for easily 10+ hours.
If you are only using for burgers/sausages/basic grilling then 1 chimney of coals broken up into fist size pieces will be plenty. You may not even need a full chimney.
What’s also great is that it doesn’t cover your hands in tons of black soot, doesn’t produce a foul smoke when lighting and not much ash.
Simply put , it’s great stuff. Definitely buying again.
Using natural BBQ lighters the charcoal started to burn quickly much faster than Aussie Heat Beads. I actually put fewer lumps of charcoal than advised for the COBB with the BBQ kit just to see if the claims were as good as in the description. First of all the heat given off by the charcoal is high, and it lasts, I got 3 hours out of the 6 lumps of charcoal, which as far as I am concerned on a BBQ is really good. The heat even when the charcoal had virtually burned down was still good to cook on, well bangers anyway. The images show lighting to cooking and the results were perfect. There is no doubt I will buy these again. I noted that in some of the reviews that the packaging was mentioned as being damaged, this was delivered in perfect condition with the charcoal inside an plastic liner inside the box. The other notable point in 1 star reviews was that the charcoal did not last long, well simply I personally do not believe that, this is really good quality charcoal that lived up to the description in my case.
After reading lots of reviews this seemed to come out best. Price isn’t much more than shop bought low quality charcoal if ordering two boxes. Charcoal lumps are a decent fist size. Lighting is easy, some reviews suggest it takes ages but this is not the case; with a Weber chimney starter it got going quicker than Weber charcoal and easily with natural firelighters. Smoke was notably cleaner than the aforementioned charcoal we’ve been using. Arrived as two boxes within a larger box; oddly the two inner boxes both had cardboard rips on the side so exposed charcoal bricks, but totally dry / intact so no problem.
