The ink is probably the most irritating thing about the printer. Like most companies Epson have found the perfect way of gouging money out of customers. Even the extra large cartridges don’t last very long and I don’t do a lot of printing and that mostly using black ink.
I haven’t used the scanner much but it seems to work fine, no real issues with it at all.
The wireless connection works well although I haven’t tried it though my phone or outside the house. The on screen window closes itself very quickly so you can easily miss that it is running out of ink.
It seems to be able to do a lot of things that I don’t want or need with a range of photo printing techniques and options for cards and other stuff.
As long as it works it’s fine for what I need but I wonder how long it will last for. Not sure I will recommend it with confidence
Easy enough to set up, It’s take a while to set up, can be a little slow. Once done, it works well. You’ll need some space around it, as the A3 paper needs some room when you insert it. That can be a little fiddly, but you soon get into it. Printing is great with good cleaner colourful images is sharp. Great quality. My only grape is the price for inks, they’re far too expensive, a real rip-off. Especially as they are not colour-fast two to three years and the image will yellow, if you hang the image by a window. “Ultraviolet” you can buy a spray to slow down its effects. It’s about time something was done about consumable and the ridiculous price they charge. One third of the price of the printer, it should be made a crime.
The unit has the capability to scan single sheets up to size A4. The printer is driven from the touch screen which is easy to use. One of the major benefits of this printer is its relatively compact size and multiplicity of functions. I have used photo paper from a variety of manufacturers and all have performed very well. Be aware of the cost of Epson ink for this printer which is consumed quite rapidly when printing photographs. For that reason I recommend this printer for low volume photo printing – say 10-40 A4 per month which equates to 5- 20 A3 per month.
I have now owned this printer for just over a month and it has performed flawlessly. It’s so convenient to run proofs of photographs in 4 x 6 in of A4 size before deciding what to print in A3. During the first month I have replaced both the Light Magenta and Light Cyan ink cartridges and it is only now that the other four setup cartridges are about to require replacement. The LCD touch screen interface is excellent providing useful help prompts when required and making it easy to operate the printer.
Having had several Epson colour printers before (A4 and A2+ large format), I’ve always been impressed with their quality of print. I’ve currently got a Canon B&W laser printer for standard prints but needed a ‘simple’ A4 for colour output. Having reviewed all the current A4 colour printers on sale by both Epson and Canon, I’ve realised that the replacement inks are horrendously expensive, or the current generic versions haven’t yet made it to affordable prices.
So, I searched for a year or two older design still on sale and for which there are good quality generic refill inks available. The XP-55 has satisfied that requirement. The six inks will provide somewhat higher quality photo prints. This is an old-school print-only printer – I don’t need any scan/fax (fax!) feature since I already have that on my Canon laser printer.
I downloaded the drivers from the Epson website. I did have some issue with connecting the printer to my house wifi, but I now think it wasn’t the printer’s fault. I have a mesh wifi system, which the printer couldn’t connect to, unless I disconnected all the wifi disks other than the one directly connected to my router. Once I did that, the printer connected (then I could re-power up the other disks), and has stayed connected ever since upon turning on.
Other thoughts so far: I do like the compact footprint of the printer. I’m glad of the concealed paper-tray, though it’s a little fiddly to have to pull out the output tray each time, but I’d getting used to that now. I’ve managed to place the printer within an enclosed cabinet, and in due course would have to remove it from the cabinet should I want to use the rear-feeder; but I won’t have to use that paper feed option much anyway.
Quality so far of the printouts is excellent on somewhat higher gsm plain paper. Photo (pearl/oyster) paper output is excellent.

Printer working excellently. The Epson starter cartridges lasted about one month. Bought generic cartridges (Colour Direct) which are working just fine and so much cheaper than Epson. Daily weekday usage, single- and double-sided all output well. Glad I went with a year-or-two old model that not only does everything new models do, but importantly has been out long enough for the generic ink manufacturers to make their versions of the cartridges.
Also, Epson only make Red and Grey XL. The only multi-pack that is compatible with this printer that I can find is the C13T379D4010 which is the pack that comes with Red and Grey and it’s only XL! So the cost is 112!!!
I don’t understand why Amazon is still advertising the light cyan and light magenta as compatible! I purchased this printer on the fact the ink (53 pack) was doable. I didn’t purchase the advertised pack, thank god but I didn’t know that I would have to spend 112 on bloody ink for this thing!!!
Also, be careful with A3 prints. It cannot print on 80GSM. I tried everything and the print head just tears the paper. In the instruction manual it claims 75GSM but I think that’s for A4 only. So, while the machine wasted all my ink trying to print on A3 at different settings, I had to purchase much thicker paper.
It is a good printer with good quality prints and it is very easy to use, but it is a money hole when it comes to inks and with Amazon STILL advertising the INCORRECT ink bundle, which is bloody amazing to me, people are going to end up with inks they can’t use!
If you don’t want to buy the horrendously priced XL pack at 112, you will have to purchase the advertised pack then purchase the XL red and grey separately because they only do XL which will leave you with Light Cyan and Light Magenta lying around doing nothing.
This is mind boggling and Epson are also guilty of screwing people over here not just Amazon!
But wait the Epson 378 multipacks sold through amazon and all UK shops are not the right ink either : )
That ink package include four colors that match the printer and two that do not; light cyan and light magenta. This ink package is SKU number C13T37884010. If you buy this and install it in the printer you will not get a good quality and may void your warranty.
Epson 378 with a DIFFERENT SKU number C13T379D3010 includes all the right inks, grey and red (not the light C and M), as well as as Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black. Here is the kicker it is only available through Epson. But Epson customer service didn’t seem to know that.
First I spent an hour on the phone w Amazon (full refund, no problem). Then spent an hour with Epson to sort the problem. The customer support people first give me the right SKU and assured me that Argus and Curry both ship their full range of inks. I spend two hours running around. The manager at Curry is very nice and calls the regional representative for Scotland who admits there is a problem, the ink is not and likely never will be available at retail stores like Curries or Amazon. He had no answer as why they would have the same Multipack number, with different SKU numbers. The manager at Currys suggests that the confusion over the inks, might be the reason for this…. So I decide to just buy the ‘right SKU’ 387 ink off the Epson website. Only the website is down. I call to see about the order and express delivery on the ink. They take my order but do not provide express delivery. Inconvenient, incredibly time consuming and potentially undermining a project due next week.
Unfortunate mess, I hope it doesn’t undermine the market for this fine printer.
Then I tried a scanned image at 1200 ppi and discovered printing in CMYK and a fair few other settings and 10 prints later I got the perfect print and i am thrilled!!
As a complete beginner in Photoshop and using Printers it was a massive learning curve for me, watching lots of Youtube videos over 3 days and also studying everything I could on the internet all helped me achieve my desired outcome..I thought I had bitten off more than I could chew doing all this myself when most artists go to printers to do all of this and I thought it was actually going to be more like 3 months before I could print out a decent print, so I was thrilled to get it right within 3 days, a day before someone wanted to buy my first print!
It took me about 50 minutes to unbox and completely set up and it even connected to wifi instantly, I didn’t have to do anything, not even press any buttons on router! It was well packaged, it didn’t come with any free paper, but the ink cartridges it came with seem to be full and not partially filled like is sometimes the case with new printers.
It has taken 140lb Canson watercolour paper in rear feed and front feed tray with ease, surprisingly, I wasn’t expecting that..I was worried it would only take certain papers, I have also read elsewhere that it does lots of other things too, like cd printing and stickers and t shirt transfer/iron ons, so I will be trying these other things too, along with seeing if it will take canvas paper to print photos on to make my own personalised photo canvas.
So it sounds like this printer has endless possibilities and I am truly thrilled with it!
I highly recommend this printer, I hope that I will still be just as happy with it in 6 months time or 3 years down the line! We shall see!!
