Whilst I only tried the smallest panel, its worked well for my use.
We have a water pump that moves water around in our water butts making sure the main one we use is always full. It runs off a normal car battery and needs charging once per week.
I’ve added the cheapest solar charger i can find that then feeds the battery.
Its worked just as expected and I no longer need to charge the battery up.
Quality of the panel is good and I’ve mounted it sidewards onto a wall as its not going to in constant use.
Will be looking at a system for my diesel heaters next.
I was not sure if this would generate any power as I have had small solar panels before but I have been very happily surprised by this. I have put this together to sit on top of the kayak and have the power go into a portable battery pack and the supply is great, like endless charge for the phone and as everything else I need power-wise is fire fuelled I am completely sorted with just that.
This is good enough for a single person kayaking or backpacking or even being turned into a capture for the back of the rucksack on long hauls but if you are to hike but if you want to use it for the top of the camper then I suggest you use two as the need for power many things go up with a camper and you will find it not enough.
I can’t complain about this at all it works fantastically well it’s very easy to set up I haven’t had any issues or problems with it so far it’s been a pleasure to use I’ve benefited from it immensely it does help out a bit because you don’t have to worry about you know running out charge your phone does not beginning to attach you with speeds and someone to it in order for it to charge your devices and someone so in that way is very useful as you keep her in the sun and it literally taking all the heat that required and necessary I know benefit you in the long term is very well designed very well made very effective and very useful I haven’t had any issues or problems with it so far and I definitely recommend it especially for the price.
Positioned atop my caravan, the panel gleamed under the Mediterranean sun. The efficiency in energy capture was evident in my daily off-grid activities. Space optimization on the panel was noticeable, giving more juice with less space. The black design melded seamlessly with my setup, but a little guidance on maintenance would have been appreciated.
Added a solar twist to my adventures. The all-black look fits my setup perfectly. Great for keeping my RV powered on the go. Quality shines through, and I’m pleased with the performance.
This is a nice 30W panel that you are going to be able to use for applications that are not too power intensive such as charging a phone, running a few sets of LED lighst or charging a battery for use later. I think you would be able to power a small pump from this but have not been able to try that.
You are probably going to want a charge controller to go with this. Solar panels on their own are not much use without a controller. As others mention, there is not a controller included but you can get them easily enough.
It comes with the standard connectors (MC4) which means you can connect multiple panels together to generate more power.
It feels well-built and was packaged very well.
This is literally just a 30w (max) solar panel with 2 cables coming from it for connecting up to a charge controller. There is no charge controller included so you will have to purchase this separately.
This is ideal for camping as 30w is good enough for a phone charger or small electronic devices. If you did want to charge up a larger power supply you will have a very very long wait.
The panel has a rigid frame and does give a decent power supply. There’s no stand but it is easy enough to prop up against a rock/tree/ vehicle. As with any solar panel it depends on how much sunlight there is as to how much power you get but it did give a decent supply.
Good quality. Recommended. Thank you for reading my review. I hope you found it useful
Easy to fit, I unclipped the connection box and replaced the existing short cable with one of the length I needed – unsoldered the original after checking the polarity, thenre-assembled with the new wire and clipped the waterproof cover back into place – simples!
This solar panel has become an essential addition to my motorhome adventures.
Installation was uncomplicated – the panel came with everything I needed to set it up, and the included instruction was clear and easy to follow.
The monocrystalline technology makes that the efficiency and power generation capabilities of this panel are impressive – I can charge fast all my devices.
Even on cloudy days the solar panel manages to generate enough energy to keep my devicescharged.
I have got this FIREFLY ENERGY 30W Solar Panel to add as a usual extension to an existing camper van set-up. The FIREFLY ENERGY panel is designed and manufactured to a good standard. It is very lightweight, yet solid feeling thanks to the aluminium frame. I have a portable power bank that I have hooked this up to, and even on a slightly cloudy (almost overcast) day I was getting 18.5v worth of charge, so I don’t doubt that on a sunny day, you will get close to, if not the total 30w. With an IP67 rating cable connection, they should cope with most of the British weather too. Hard to fault, and therefore easy to recommend.
I got the 30w panel kit and will be using it to power the lighting and some usb sockets in my garage to try and save some money on electricity.
The panel looks good and solid, I hooked it up to the included controller on an overcast day and it was generating a strong consistent current that was good enough to charge a couple of phones or recharge a battery.
The connection process was straight forward – note you’ll need a leisure battery to use this properly, which I had already.
This would also be good for topping up the charge on an off grid setup – caravan, camper etc.
Can’t wait to get this mounted and start saving some money.
As always with solar panels, the power we achieve will be related to the size of the panel. So even if 30W can be little, each size is thought for a few uses. This one is useful for small uses, such as LED lights, charging a mobile phone/tablet (it has the same power or a little less than the quick charge plugs)… Or if we have patience and many hours of sun, to charge big batteries to be able to use them later for more powerful items.
The quality of the materials is good. It is well manufactured, there are no defects in the metal structure or, what is important, in the surface of the panel.
The only problem is that we can not start using it according to arrives because it requires a controller. And a connection to connect the cables we go to use.
My son has taken this camping and said although it has quite short cables and no instructions, it was fairly easy to set up and use, good for short camping trips but perhaps not for full off grid life
This is a well made solar panel although the wire attachment could do with being better quality and a bit longer.
There is no instructions included so you really need to know what you are doing when you get this. Or at least have basic knowledge and know your way around YouTube.
It does give a decent output especially when the sun is out.
Good quality solar panel. Very easy to set up.
To get the best from this panel it really needs to be connected to a controller and inverter, depending on what you want the panel to power. You can, theoretically connect this panel direct to a battery if you want to charge it but then you have no way of controlling how much charge goes into the battery. You can overcharge it.
At the moment we have this panel set up in the garden and it controls power to a pump and a fountain in our pond. It has enough power to do this quite easily so long as there is enough sunlight of course.
We do have a plan to connect several of these panels in series to control heating and ventilation in the greenhouse but that will have to wait for a while.
Right now, we are very happy with the quality and performance of this panel.
What you get is just the solar panel, as shown, with the wire cut to length as shown. You get nothing else, just the sticker on the back with the ratings.
If you know what your doing it’s a great set of kit. Me? I’m a newbie so I had to research what exactly I can do with it, so I bought a charge controller and a 12v battery (mainly because the controller can’t directly charge without a battery in the middle). So yes, you can charge your mobile phones fairly simply for about 70, of which this solar panel is the biggest cost.
I stripped back the wire a bit, screwed it into the charge controller with the battery in already (instructions note to do this very specifically) and then put a USB phone charger in, and it works! Huzzah, like learning how to start a fire for the first time in human civilisation. The panel appears to be working really well, and at a 23% efficiency rate if that is correct, is quite high from my understanding.
This appeared to be charging in direct sun just under the speed that the battery was charging my phone, so as long as there is moments where nothing is using the power, it should be filling the battery up suitably.
The negatives really is small, and one is the length of wire, could it not be a little bit longer? Guess it’s more of a amateur issue as I’m not planning on daisy chaining a bunch of solar panels as part of a big set. The other is just having no documentation at all. I get this is more of a professional thing, and actually, it’s functioning really well and is doing the job, but I had to put the research in first to know what I’m doing.
It’s charging the battery well, it’s a good size that isn’t too big, suitable for camping or going away for a bit.
Review for FIREFLY ENERGY 20W Monocrystalline Solar Panel All Black Module Solarpanel for RV, Boats, Trailer, Camper, Marine, Off-Grid System
This is my first venture into the use of dedicated stand alone solar panels, in a bid to eventually become more energy independent. This is a decent size foldable panel which at peak can generate 20W, sufficient to power small devices or charge batteries. The package is the bare bones basic solar panel with simple electrical wiring for direct connection to other. The key thing with any solar panel is the quality of the protective top sheet, many cheaper ones come with plastic top sheets which over time will cloud and whiten and so lessening solar conversion efficiency. This has a decent quality glassy finish, which if kept clean by wiping down every so often will maintain close to its peak efficiency in ideal conditions. The solar efficiency is around 23%, mean 23% of light falling onto it will be converted to electricity, this is fair for panels of this type. The solar efficiency is dependent upon a number of factors the ideal conditions will be south facing and direct sunlight, with different orientations and cloudier skies having a significant impact reducing the output. At the moment I have been testing this with simple setups, initially to multimeters to monitor the output, voltage, current etc to see how it actually performs, I am glad to day it performs close to what the manufacturer states. The next set of testing is how efficiently it can charge batteries, as this is going to be my main use and area of investigation for these solar panels, its good for trickle charging batteries rated at 2.0Ah – 7.0Ah in my testing which were my power tool batteries so happy with that. My next test will be to see how efficiently this can directly power small gadgets/appliances. Overall a low powered foldable solar panel capable of trickle charging and powering low powered devices.
Well made and tough this solar panel is great for many solar projects. The wiring at the back can be cut back to make the ends longer or extended depending on your own needs. We are working on using solar to power things like tv, phone charging and lights, depending on your requirements this could be used alone or in sequence with another or more. Great for the price.
For just 35 you get a 30w solar panel but 30w isn’t a great deal and you’ll need a lot more than that if you’re looking to save on electricity. This panel will be fine for small things such as charging your phone or having some lights up the garden/camper etc.
As with most things, it’s not as easy as just buying a solar panel and you’re done, you’re going to also need a controller and a 12v/24v battery and if you want a larger wattage you’ll likely need a power inverter as well (probably not for this though). This is quite literally just a 30w panel with a M/F MC4 cable coming from the junction box.
The panel itself is actually quite good quality and despite being placed in a questionable place for sun coverage, it did do a good job of collecting that power. I think it’s a perfect panel for some small things up the garden or on your camper van as it’s quite cheap and a good quality panel.
At the time of writing this review, the price for this solar panel is 34.99.
The solar panel boasts a high conversion rate of up to 23%, ensuring that it efficiently harnesses solar energy and converts it into usable electricity. This efficiency is further improved by optimizing the space between cell strings, reducing wasted space and increasing the overall panel efficiency.
Compact and Lightweight: The high efficiency solar cells enable the panel to be smaller and lighter while providing the same power output. This compact size and light weight make installation a breeze, especially in space-limited areas like vehicle roofs or boat decks. The pre-drilled mounting holes add to the convenience of installation.
The panel offers a 100% positive output tolerance, ensuring that it consistently generates the rated power output. The unique internal bypass lamination technology is a standout feature as it minimizes energy loss when the panel is partly shaded, thereby enhancing its overall performance.
The inclusion of an IP65 junction box and standard MC4 connectors ensures that the panel is well-protected from challenging environmental conditions. This makes it reliable and durable, suitable for various applications.
The full-black design of the panel makes it visually appealing, and it is designed specifically for off-grid power systems. It is well-suited for a wide range of applications, including RVs, campers, boats, gardens, rooftops, and more. Whether it’s for single battery charging or for grid-tied applications, the panel proves to be versatile and efficient.
Nice panel packed well a little disappointed there is no instructions on how to fit or anything basic
I am a little disappointed with the length of the cable at the back but overall quite pleased very light very portable just missing informatio
This solar power panel doesn’t provide the most power ever at 30W, but it’s enough for small jobs and tasks.
It was relatively easy to install and set up and works very well and efficiently when in direct sunlight throughout the day.
You’re also able to hook up multiple together, which is great if you want to expand your set up in the future.
All in all, it’s a good solar panel for camper vans and the like for the price.
Duncurin has been running up this super solar panel from Firefly Energy. It is the latest monocrystalline design and comes in a nice discreet package which is light, well finished and robust. It is also well made with nice quality leads and standard sockets which are brought out individually so that the user then has a choice to use just the one or add them in series or parallel to boost voltage and or current – depending upon space available and power requirement. It has a nice aluminium frame with corner protectors and drill holes to make mounting easy enough. It also looks good so wouldnt disgrace your RV or your boat etc.
This is a 30W panel and although it is efficient and functions well it isnt the sort of panel which is going to power your house or your car or even earn loads of money saving power. For the camper, the motor home, the RV or those who have simple demands to place upon it such as LED lighting in the garage or shed or recharging USB devices or Lithium batteries for low power electronics circuits – then this is ideal. It is also ideal for someone like myself who has an interest in electronics but wouldn’t know how to build a more ambitious system – without at first getting a little hands-on experience.
I tested it in the afternoon sun (yes you read that correctly) here in Manchester. You can see from the meter readings that the voltage was nicely over 21v and the short-circuit current over 1.2A In more direct sun I’d expect these figures to climb.
The standard connectors mean it is easy to chain more of them together or wire them to a solar charge controller or simply use step up or down voltage converters to charge Lithium batteries for later use. It is also not bad value. As a first step then for someone keen to learn more about the upcoming solar powered revolution or for those with fairly modest power requirements then this panel is perfect. Please see some pics attached of voltage 4pm Manchester and short-circuit current flow. Many thanks.
Had problems with the panel so contacted the seller and they never responded, not a good aftersales service!!!
Tried to sort it through amazon who are a complete Joke too!!!
I ordered one of these Firefly 100w solar panels to add to a previous 100w panel that i use to charge a 100ah lifepo4 battery. The Volts and Amps were almost identical to my other panel so i knew i could add this panel to the string. When the panel arrived i was impressed with how smart it looked, all in black it looked much better than the standard black/silver panels. The size was a little odd, it was a lot longer rather than wider in size. The panel comes with pre-installed MC4 connectors, so hooking it up in parallel was a complete breeze with branch adapters. I liked the panel so much that i immediately ordered a second one.
Power wise, well we are still having a pretty nasty winter where i am, with snow only a few days back! However adding these panels to my previous 100w panel results in me now getting around 160w combined power. I have been testing them for just over a week now and they are performing as i would expect for this time of year. I have mounted these panels vertically at this time due to the angle of the sun where i am for this time of year, obviously i will relocate them and angle them later in the spring when the sun gets higher in the sky.
Overall i am extremely satisfied with these firefly panels – great addition to my small solar home setup and they look super smart also!
Would i recommend these solar panels to others? If you are looking for lightweight smart panels that are narrow and long then i would not hesitate to recommend these to you!
I hope that you found my review helpful
Good quality feel and build and works well . It produces good results even on dull days this early in the year. I like the black frame too. Less obvious as it is fitted to a low level roof rack on my T5
