Very fun once its learned but very difficult to learn at firs
Im not use to games like this but me and my 7 year old love it. We probably are playing wrong. We still have a great time tho.
Brought as a present for someone that loves Godzilla, a bit of a faff to set up and learn initially but now we have the hang of it we as a family love it.
In terms of playability, the game is fast and easy to learn. Each character has their own deck, and as rounds progress, players lose cards in their deck and get more and more limited options in terms of what they can do. These cards are stolen and used as points by other players, with the holder of the most points at the end being the winner. All the characters have different play styles, but it can begin to feel repetitive by the late game.
Definitely better with more people. This is a simple game that any Godzilla fan would enjoy. The board game is well made and will last for a long time, with the models looking good and decent quality as well.
The game itself is not that easy to learn based on the rule book you’re going to have to look some videos up to supplement but once you’re over that hurdle it’s an amazing time for Kaiju fans. You are literally fighting it out in the middle of a city with unique abilities that make you feel like the monster you’re using. You can throw vehicles around, monsters around and just have a blast as the kaiju get swung across the city hitting and damaging vehicles and buildings and each other WWE style. It’s GREAT!! I played this with my wife and 7 year old, he knows how to read and is pretty smart so he did just fine. My 4 year old was on his moms team and he had a blast. We re-enacted the moves and powers so that the kaiju actually did them while playing some Godzilla music in the background. Example one of the cards for Mothra was called sky drop I believe and she would take the kaiju in the air and drop them so that they fall up to 2 spaces away. So we physically took Mothra to grab Ghidora in the air and dropped him down. It was glorious!
I wish they had expansions as there are only three kaiju
Not super simple, but easy enough to learn with a bit of effort. Offers players a wide variety of ways to play the game. The production value is off the charts. A no-brainer buy for Godzilla fans, and an easy recommend for anyone even slightly into the niche-board-game genre.
The game has tons of pieces and most of them are high quality. Due to the flimsy nature of the Megalon character’s top piece, it broke in shipping with no damage to the box or other pieces. Played a few times and it was enjoyable. Needs 3+ players or 2 players playing two characters to enjoy.
Incredible quality and tho challenging to learn at the start but one of our faves. Everyone in the family has their own copy now and we are praying for an expansion to bring in more monsters from the films. Actually make that many expansions. Long live the king of the monster games
I bought a copy for myself and my nephews (who are Godzilla obsessed). Good for kids as no Kiaju are killed in the game. They just destroy Tokyo and knock each other around. The special buildings are nice, as well as the Kiaju figs (though Motha cries for paint, being just a big orange moth).
My only complaint is the little buildings don’t have matching 3d structures they are just cardboard counters. But bang for the buck this can’t be beaten.
This is a great gift for fans of the big G himself. Game is fun but casual fans might now enjoy as much as a hardcore. I wish there were more monsters in the set but as it stands it’s pretty good. I must have for fans of the movie and might be a nice collector’s item in a few years.
I enjoyed this game a lot. I thought it was fairly thematic. You don’t directly take damage, you take damage to your deck and certain cards from your deck are removed from play and scored as Victory Points. You destroy parts of the city for energy to pay for card costs and as you destroy parts of the city there is an “end game” timer that advances. When the count down reaches it’s final level, Victory Points are counted and that determines the winner.
I dig this mechanic because it’s a balance of destroying the city when you think you’re ahead in victory points at the sacrifice of leaving your enemy’s deck untouched, and limiting your opponents choices. It took me about 30 minutes to learn the rules, and we watched a video on it. After we stumbled through the first game, we felt we had a grasp on the rules and the next game went much better. It’s not difficult to learn, but not a lot of games attack deck variety/sizes and only rely on Victory Points when you are tasked with brawling with giant monsters.
The art on the cards looks great, the punch tokens all tend to blend together though. The bright colors on the box do not translate to the art inside. The sculpts of the kaiju are great as well. Probably too big for the board, or the board is too small. With just the two of us we crowded spaces, but it’s a minor point at best.
I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to Godzilla fans. Potentially a family game, probably 10+ if i had to guess. And nobody is knocked out of the game. The fight goes on round for round and victory points determine the outcome so everyone gets to keep playing until the end.
We have the bad habit of breaking out a new game late at night when our adult brains are tired and the kiddo’s brain is still buzzing. It takes at least three play throughs for us to feel like we know what we are doing. That said, this is a great homage to the Godzilla et al. monster movies and a lot of fun. It may even spark an interest in those classic films (like the Horrified game) and the culture that spawned them. A good game, too, for gameschooling (cause effect, strategy, stealth reading) ! Light competitive and dynamic play mechanics. A new favorite.
First of all, the box itself alone is worth the price of this game! Photos don’t do it justice, it is beautiful. The game itself, like most games Prospero Hall has released recently is great. It’s NOT just a license slapped on a crappy game for a quick cash-in, like most people expect from these types of games. I would reccomend you be atleast somewhat familiar or playing with someone who is accustomed to these types of games. I could definitely see how it would be overwhelming to someone new to “hobby” boardgames. It scales well to 2 players, 4 is a little much. 3 definitely feels like the sweet spot.
I bought the game for my grandson (12) who loves board games. We played the game the first time on a Sunday afternoon.
The suggested time to play is 45 minutes, but, since we were learning and playing at the same time, it took us about 4 hours.
That is not, in any way a bad thing. We all enjoyed playing, and didn’t notice how much time had passed until we realized it was nearly dinner time.
All agreed this was a great game, and we’re going to be playing it again soon.
Fun with kaiju monsters. Throw and destroy buildings to get energy. Use the energy to play your cards and attack your opponents. The round doesn’t end until everyone passes their turn. The way to win is to get the most points by getting prized cards from your opponent. You get prize cards if you damage your opponent and if he/she cannot block you get as many prize cards as you did damage but you can only pick the card with the highest point. The game ends when the oxygen meter and buildings cross.
The figures are very detailed and the game well designed. Only issue is I am missing one token but have an extra of another one.
Does not take away from the game and its a must for Godzilla fans.
I bought this game on a whim because the box art was compelling, and I was not disappointed with what I received.
Pros
– Visually stunning cards and figures
– Exciting gameplay (think playing with monsters like you did when you were a kid, but with rules).
– Easy to learn and teach
– Complex enough rules to keep more experienced board game players engaged (read: it’s not just a gimmick game)
– You can throw tanks at each other! And you can throw each other at each other!
Cons
– Only 4 Kaiju (would like to see an expansion, there’s plenty of Kaiju they could choose from)
– The map pieces and game tokens are too dark/low contrast so it can be hard to see what’s on the board
Recently there’s been an influx of Godzilla merchandise which for Godzilla fans is very exciting. This board game is an example of something that feels like it was made by fans of Godzilla that wanted to create a fun game with one of the best kaiju.
The build quality on this game is great, the cardboard pieces aren’t flimsy in the slightest and are actually fairly thick which leads me to believe they’ll last a long time. Same goes for the plastic building pieces as well. The Kaiju are also well made and fell like they’ll withstand the way I play the game which is to smash the monsters at the things they’re destroying (it’s more fun that way).
The actual gameplay is really fun, gaining energy to use attacks to fight other players. Each kaiju also has abilities that don’t cost energy which means that even players who don’t have any energy can participate in the action. It’s actually a pretty simple system to understand and within one game my sister understood the rules as well as I did without even reading the manual. As a convenient addition the back cover of the manual has the steps of every turn so you can very easily look to it if you forget what’s next.
The only reason I removed a star is a minor annoyance that kept me from having a perfect time with this game. My game came with an extra energy tracking cube bag instead of the stand for Mothra. Luckily Mothra can be placed in such a way that she doesn’t fall, but it’s fairly sensitive, and when the Mothra piece is always on the move some time has to be dedicated to make sure she doesn’t fall over and push over other pieces. It’s a small inconvenience, but just be sure when you get your game that you have all the necessary parts, you never know if it’ll miss something important.
Overall this game is amazing, and a fun game not just for fans of Godzilla, but I’d say even for people who just like board games. I wouldn’t mind if down the line they make expansion packs. Add even more monsters, like Anguilas, Rodan, or even something out of left field like Eborah. This game is crazy fun with details that will make a Godzilla fan’s heart soar.
I had my doubts about this game. I noticed it was made by Funko, whose Pop figurines I kind of hate. However, they delivered on a well made and faithful product.
It’s a strategy game where you win by having the highest total of points, not by “killing” your opponent. It’s easy to set up and has that sweet spot of 45 min to an hour for play time. The only thing I don’t care for so far is some of the rules don’t make logical sense. For example: your kaiju can’t directly attack buildings. Other than that I’ve enjoyed this quite a lot, and I really hope they do some expansions.
We enjoyed this game. The pieces are fun and well made. There are sooo many details. I highly recommend the How to Play video, this really helped us on the first time through. We have small kids, so we played in teams, helping them, which was fun. All of the components are well made and not at all cheap feeling. The artwork is great and captures the feel of the game play and movies. We enjoyed playing the Kaiju, racing against the clock before the humans took us out with the Oxygen Destroyer. I think we will enjoy playing this for many years.
The first time we played this as a 2-player game with my 10 year old son, who is a massive fan of Godzilla. We had so much fun (he played Godzilla, I was King Ghidora) that dad and little brother wanted to join us as well! We then played the game THREE nights in a row, the whole family, and with the kids willingly giving up screen time to go head to head to destroy Tokyo. LOL
The game movers are fully sculpted plus all the 3D buildings to destroy – it really makes it like a little diorama of the city to rampage through. The artwork is so fun and immersive – and it’s all based on the classic films but not just screen grabs.
Highly recommend! I’ll be giving this one as a gift for Christmas for sure.
