I am a great fan of the more ‘heavyweight’ complex boardgames such as Terraforming Mars, Caylus, Twilight Struggle etc, but this game is a delight to play. Quick to learn and play (say 40 mins for a 3 player) it it’s a great after dinner game with a good balance of luck and skill
This is such a cute game- had lots of fun playing with family and friends. Easy to understand once you start playing. The cards and board are very high quality and very cute with all the sushi themes. Perfect as a gift also
I’ll start from the top – the bad part.
I bought this for my parents, based on very good reviews online for Sushi Go as a two player game, and one that travels well. The Party edition was the only one I could find.
The tin is big. It’s small compared to a modern board game box, but still would take up a substantial amount of space in a bag or case. So it’s not 100% ideal for the purposes I bought it for.
The setup instructions are also not clear, and not intuative either. Three gamers struggled, and disagreed in our interpretations. I think if we had been familiar with the base game it would have been simple, but we weren’t.
The Party expansion, while the gameplay is the same as the base game, it creates a whole setup phase that does not exist in the base game. Thus, a video of how to play the base game didn’t help us at all.
To save anyone else this issue: you only play with the cards on your chosen menu – the other items are not available.
The gameboard and its tiles, while it makes a nice visual reminder of the scores and what is in play, isn’t 100% necessary, and could be left behind if travelling. You’d just need another way to track scores. A pen and paper would work easily.
I’m done with the issues – the rest is all good. The gameplay is very simple: take a card and pass the rest of your hand clockwise. Take another, pass again, and so on.
There are elements of both skill and luck – is it tactically worth picking up things you need a set of? There might not be more available. Do you risk playing the Miso soup and hope no-one else does?
Once we got the hang of it, we very much enjoyed it. The dynamics are easy to grasp, and the scoring is relatively simple.
Bring on the maki!
Really nice game to play with family! Quick to pick up, lots of variations to be played and short gameplay.
I love this game so I bought for my nephews for Christmas. But for my surprise, it came missing the menu cards. So we ordered again, and it came missing the same cards again. Be aware of it.
Besides that, it’s a great game! Lots of fun, and you can change the difficult of the game to adapt it for kids or adults.
The game is good however it was delivered in an amazon eco paper bag and not a cardboard box resulting in it getting a dent on one corner form the outstandingly delicate handling of amazon delivery drivers
Only gave it three stars for the travelling because its a heavy tin but that’s a good thing, just not ideal for travelling. Really fun game, loads of variations to keep it as fresh as sushi.
Great game, easy to pick up once you start playing
Think this game is great. Its easy to play and great there are so many combinations to the “menu”.
This game was great in its original format, but in the party version is excellent. The possibilities to form different decks are endless and it’s great fun for all the family.
Had to watch a YouTube video to how to play but after that was easy to play and my 6 year old enjoys it!! Lots of different games and differe
There are so many variations it keeps the game very interesting.
Easy to understand once you go through the rules, and you only need to refer back to it for the cards special abilities.
This game is always a hit and with the choice of menus there are loads of combinations to play, all offering different playing experiences. It’s great for 2 or more players and to top it off the art is adorable. There are some nice easy point scoring sushi which are great starters or crowd pleasers for a nice chilled game, but it’s great fun to put the more tricky cards in which threaten negative points. Definitely recommend this game, even if you don’t like sushi!
Fast delivery, even a day earlier. The game is packed in a metal box. My friends like the cute cartoon drawings on the card and can play with many different combinations. Perfect for a boardgame night.
Great little game that was easy to pick up. The Party set comes equipped with enough game scenarios to allow for longevity. Can play with as few as 2 people up to 8 so it’s more than ideal for a quick game or to even whip out at Christmas when you’ve got family visiting. Easy to learn so perfect for young people too.
A fun and quick party game, I had a lot of fun playing it. In this game you need to remember a bit and then think how to best get points to win. Puts your brain working. Fun game.
Really fun pass and play set collection game. New players may find it difficult to understand, but after one round they will get it. Gameplay is really fast and fun and with this being the party edition you get a small board to keep track of your (and others’) scores and it doesn’t get stale as there are loads of menu options in the tin to mix the game up a bit. That’s right I said tin, this game comes in a really cool tin, but on the downside the cards aren’t packed tightly in there and you aren’t given any baggies or bands for the cards so if you stand it up to display your funky tin, you will have a job on your hands separating the cards. As a result it doesn’t make a great travel game either which is a shame. Overall amazing game though! Even if you hate the theme (it’s not to everyone’s taste but is quite cute) I guarantee you will have fun playing.
This is a really fun game. Definitely worth going for the party pack which allows you to pick different “menus”…essentially it means the game is slightly different each time and/or you can adjust to the size of the group. It’s obviously much better as a group, but still great as a 2 player. Well worth a go!
Excellent game. I only bought this on a whim as my teen loves anime and anything Japanese. Played with 5 players, youngest being 9 years old. Easy enough to play, although we did watch a YouTube tutorial as the booklet seemed a bit complicated! Fast moving rounds. Plenty of different “menus” so it doesn’t get boring.
As a fan of the original Sushi Go card game and with restrictions to stay at home due to coronavirus, I decided that Sushi Go Party would be a worthwhile investment – I was not disappointed. The concept is great, the quality is high, the illustrations are fun and it scores high on replayability. My 8 year old daughter loves it but it’s equally fun for grous of adults. Plenty of customisation options to keep things interesting and requires more strategy than luck. The only thing is (like a lot of games) the instructions could be clearer – fortunately there’s plenty of Youtube tutorials to explain the game setup and mechanics if you get stuck. Highly recommended.
This game is like simple 7 Wonders. Good for a variable number of players of wide ages, and the different ‘menus’ keep the game fresh if you play it a lot. Quick to learn and play. The tin is well made though there is a big open space inside for all the cards, so they tend to get all shaken and mixed up if you carry it around which increases setup time a lot. I have put some small elastic bands around the different card types to keep them together, but they could have included separate card slots in the box.
This game has and endless variety of combinations, it will not quickly get dry. In terms of travel, the game’s tin is perfect for throwing into a suitcase, but it is not a game you can play while actively traveling (e.g., in a car or plane, though you could play on a train if you have a table between two sets of double seats facing one another), because there are many cards as well as points tokens to move for scoring purposes. It takes time and several rounds to figure out the points system for the special cards, particularly if you like to frequently change up the menu. There are lots of cards to manage, so at least one member of the group needs to be able to keep things organised, though once it is set up, there isn’t much to complicate game play. It may not be a game that a typical board game-playing kid (Monopoly, Life, etc.) would be drawn to on their own, as there is a learning curve, but with the encouragement of other players, it can be enjoyable for any child.
We absolutely love this game. Quick and easy to play with older primary aged children (and adults!). Good quality cards, pieces and board and it’s all stored in the metal tin.
My 10yo daughter loves it and there’s a dollop of strategy plus a bit of luck. She can keep track of some of the cards going around and try to plan ahead. What’s great is the mental arithmetic at the end (although not so great for me!). My daughter is getting pretty good at adding up on the fly and in multiples.
Go Sushi Party doesn’t last too long. Maybe 20mins.
Great game, much more variety than the normal version so every game can be different. Really easy to pick up, we played with adults and children as young as 6 at a family gathering, and ended up playing for hours on end. Since then everyone has purchased their own copy which says a lot! Games are fast paced and require little skill so nobody feels left out. The cards are also really cute which is an added bonus – only negative is that the lovely tin that it comes in doesn’t tightly hold the cards (so they get mixed up when transporting) and that the tin doesn’t stay shut so we’ve had to tape ours. Only minor inconveniences though!
I love this game! i played it once at my frie d’s place and immediately purchased this one after.
The cards are of good quality, drawings of the sushi are super cute, and the game is fast and easy to learn.
Also, I like the fsct that it comes in a tin bix with card dividers However, the card slots are different from what I saw on the picture in another review here so I was a bit dissappointed by that. My card dividers just came with 7 slots:
– 1x appetizers
– 1x specials
– 1x Dessert
– 1x Nigiri
– 1x rolls
– 2x extras
Also the order of these “slots” didn’t follow the order of the board, and the slot for ‘specials’ can’t hold all the vards + card boards. So Gamewright could improve on that. However, I am still happy since the Dutch version of this game doesn’t provide cardslots at all.
All in all, I recommend to purchase this game instead of the regular version/card version since it adds more diversity to your gameplay.
We’ve had so much fun playing this game. Only took a couple of games for my 8 year old to learn the rules and she enjoys it very much. Great one to take out with a few friends as it’s easy to play, games are quick and simple to set up. Find videos on Youtube and see for yourself. I took a star off for the price – I only got this as it was on a lightning deal. Not sure if I would pay full price due to limited content in the box.
Overall this is a great simple game to play. Look at cards, Pick a card, pass them on. Repeat until no more cards are left.
The artwork is so cute for the Sushi makes it a visually good looking game.
Not a fan of games in tins. Tin came with small dents and scratches already.
It is abit of a effort to select the type of cards you are using before the game and then resorting the cards at the end back into their groups.
The basic Sushi Go obeivously doesnt have this issue but it’s a trade off with having more choice of cards to play with.
Reasonably priced (compared to some board games) and really good fun. Might be a bit confusing as it’s quite a different approach to many games, but it keeps the pace up and you can quickly knock out some fun rounds without getting bored.
Great for before or after dinner.
Tin is nice, all elements are well made, but it’s definitely not designed for travel.
We got this game a couple of weeks ago and have been playing it almost daily ever since! For any gamers the most similar game to this is Seven Wonders, only this is a simpler version with a few twists. It’s so easy to learn but has the gift of being different every time and there are so many combinations of “menus” that you can play to keep the game fresh. The graphics are lovely and the board is a really good quality.
My only criticism is that the tin it comes in doesn’t separate the cards out enough, but this is minor when you think about how much fun we’ve had with the game! Definitely recommend.
I can’t tell you what it is about this game; but I love it!
The illustrations are lovely and the play is so simple but so effective.
It’s an absolute favorite with my friends, because it’s easy to play while sitting around having a chat and a drink – but still have a competitive edge and is lots of fun. Super easy – children would love it too I imagine but I’m far past that age and I wanted to let people know how much us group of adults love it 🙂
Brilliant game which is both quick to play and portable – box is not too big but you can effectively play the game without the scoring track so if space is at a premium you really just need to take the cards with you and perform the scoring on a separate bit of paper (like the original Sushi Go). I have a number of “heavier” board games which take a couple of hours to play and can be difficult to keep the kids attention but this game is quick and fast paced which is great for younger kids
This is a great product, big selling point for me was the artwork, just surprisingly cute, but the recommendations I received from a few friends helped.
The contents look great and are more than I expected, the quality is great and overall just looks sleek.
This is the “deluxe” version, which to be fair is what it should be as it is a more complete version of the original game.
The game is very straightforward with a card draft mechanic for game play.
I feel that it is a great game and is quirky enough to catch people’s attention for more than a few rounds of play.
This is such an awesome game. Takes us about 20-25 minutes to play a game. You can vary it each time depending on the menu cards you use. As an adult I enjoy playing it with my 9 year old as well as another adult. Comes in a handy tin so easy to take away on holiday too. Nice quality cards and really like the menu board and the ability to score using the board. We never had the Sushi Go cards but I would say if you can stretch that bit extra this is definitely better by the sounds of it. I know someone who has both and they recommended we get the Party version and I am pleased they did.
Heard so much about Sushi go and was a bit reluctant to buy because of the name and theme. I am finding out that with the european games market many games may seem to have a strange theme but are some of the best.
Instead of buying Sushi Go i thought I would get the party addition, a good choice in my eyes, as this contains the original and also lots of other additional menus and game modes. As I play alot of games with the girlfriend the 2 player variant works very well. Still to try some of the other menus but looking forward to that.
Would recommend this greatly to anyone looking for a simple party game that scales well to different sizes.
A great game made even more fun with the new cards being introduced. For anyone who isn’t aware, this isn’t an expansion for the original Sushi go but an extended version of the original game complete with scoreboard so you don’t need pen and paper to keep track of scores.Which brings me to my only gripe-the board and counters are too small and fiddly meaning a slight nudge on the board or stray flying card results in the scores being wiped out.Magnetic counters would be a massive improvement.Apart from that,it’s all good!
I enjoyed the original version of this game enough to buy the Deluxe box.
The Deluxe box brings lots more replayability with lot’s more cards to choose from, more flexibility in the amount of players that can play, and a game mode for first timers which makes it very easy and fast to teach. The scoreboard was a much needed addition, and having used it I don’t think anyone would rather go back to writing down the scores. If you’re on the fence about which version of the game to get: this one is definitely worth it!
As a bonus I find this to be a great gateway game to bring in people that don’t normally play boardgames. I brought this to a party with some work colleagues and it went down incredibly well.
My only gripes are that the box is slightly too small for the manual, and the insert is not ideal. Setting up and putting it away takes a lot of time for what’s quite a fast game. With a better insert, or perhaps a way of pulling out cards with a label sticking out for each type would make finding the cards you wish to use much faster.
I already had the original sushi go game and had been bemoaning the lack of any expansions and then this came out! I couldn’t believe my good fortune. I love games but my friends and family are not always so keen so I was unsure about the reception it would receive. It was a complete and utter hit – everyone loved it from all generations. It is incredibly easy to learn so is suitable for all ages and skill levels but the beauty of the ‘party’ version is that, unlike the original you can customise the game so that it never gets dull or predictable.
We have tried all of the ‘menus’ suggested in the instructions and have also tried a few of our own and this has really kept it exciting.
As well as the wider selection of cards (with great illustrations) the party version comes with a handy scoring board. This makes it much easier to keep track of who is winning but also allows you to show which card types are in play – very useful for new or forgetful players.
The only negative really is the tin. There aren’t enough inserts to keep all of the cards in their separate groups. Doesn’t affect game play at all but is a bit of a shame with what is otherwise one of the best thought out games in my collection.
If you like the original game, this is a no brainer. If you like board games in general, this is no brainer. Extremely simple but intriguing gameplay based on drafting (each player is dealt a hand of cards, pick one card and send the rest to your right, when each player have chosen a card, all reveal their choice and you make a new selection based on the new cards). What makes this game so great is the simplicity (I am struggeling to find games my family likes to play besides the classics, so finding this gem was a total blast) and yet this new version offers a great deal more in the diversity department basen on which menu you chose to play with. I cannot recommend this enough, just make sure to get it sleeved asap ^^
A really fun little game with lots of variations.
A few people have said it’s annoying because you have to shuffle through the cards to select the ones you’ll be playing with but the box comes with slots to keep each item separate so you can pick them out easily.
Everything has been really well thought out meaning you can play with different sized groups and with different strategies.
