How to use hair dye at home?

Before you do anything, do a patch test. Apply a small amount of colourant behind your ear and wait 48 hours. Always read the instructions in the box. Watch our How To Video above for a step-by-step tutorial.

How many boxes of dye do I need?

More often than not, people can underestimate how much hair dye they need. If you have long hair below shoulder length or thick hair, always buy 2 boxes to make sure you get perfect coverage all over. You don’t want to be left feeling disappointed.

Which parts of the packaging are recyclable?

You can recycle the outer box, the developer bottle, conditioner bottle and the instruction leaflet.

How to pick the right shade.

The 1st number of the shade relates to the base colour. The higher the number the lighter the shade. The 2nd number relates to the reflect, the higher the number, the warmer the shade will be.

Always liked this brand for coverage but the bottles were really hard to use. Now they have softer easy to squeeze applications so loads better. Coverage for my grey is great and conditioner is wonderful. My only issue is the colour does not last as long as other brands.

No bleachy eye can’t breathe got my head out the window with this one! So don’t know how it works or why the others need the eye burning stuff, but it does. Nice colour too. Great!

I bought this product to use as a toner/colour after bleaching my hair. I left 3 weeks between bleaching and colouring.
This product is great but you need to be very close to the colour originally hence why I use us it after bleaching
You cannot use this to bleach or lighten your hair or if you have dark hair.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI had done a few bleach baths to get rid of my jet black hair as I’ve had black hair since I was 14 (now 32) & couldn’t decide on a colour as I was so used to black, I came across iridescent light brown & thought it looked interesting, like an ashy almost pink toned brown & it didn’t disappoint! For reference the top of my hair was a very dark orange and the bottom a yellow colour from the bleach baths and it thankfully all went a similar colour. I absolutely love it ! Highly recommended! My new fave

5.0 out of 5 stars Literally obsessing!

It did a great job of covering up my red hair (dyed red) and took very quickly. It’s a lovely shade, my only issue was that it was very runny and made quite a mess.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBeen looking for a natural almost black shade for my (East) Asian hair which is going salt n pepper. First time using an oil based dye, and it was very easy with no pungent chemical smell or stinging – which happened when I used Garnier Nutrisse (wrong shade for me). The conditioner is gorgeous, leaving my hair soft and silky, I would actually buy this seperately if they sold it!

I followed the instructions, applying it in layered sections with a brush and gloved hands. Left it on for 30 mins after finishing application, but unfortunately it didn’t cover all my greys. I think I may have to leave it on for longer as I suspect my hair is very dye resistant. (I’ve read somewhere this can be the case with thick Asian hair).

After about two washes to get the dye out of my scalp, the finished shade is lovely in daylight, looks very natural. But, in artificial light theres a very obvious orange undertone which is quite brassy and bright. Although my natural hair does have an orange undertone, it’s towards the neutral subtle side. So just be aware the shade might look different in different light conditions.

I’ll definitely purchase again and see if I can cover those greys properly next time!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI don’t usually use home hair colour but decided to give it a go after rising costs at hairdressers. I LOVE this product. Very easy to use. The box turns into a little holder for the bottle. The conditioner for the end has plenty for a second covering. If you have longer hair than shoulder length then you will need two bottles but that’s the same as every other brand.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI have brown (greying) hair, and of course it’s better to go lighter when older, and always had trouble with blond colourants making it look orange – found out Ash is the needed ingredient which 8.31 Golden Ash Blonde has (one of the few on the market it seems) It starts a bit dark intially but after a few days of washing lightens (so don’t panic) – my trick is, to not re-colour the length and tips (just roots) and it leaves a nice highlight affect of darker to sun-kissed blond.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGreat hair dye! Got shade black and it’s a beautiful true black colour. Was a bit hesitant as tried the bleach kit from the same brand and it was awful, barely lightened my hair at all but this dye is awesome! Will buy agai

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersLove olia hair dye. Smells nice and tends to last long. Only issue I’ve found is this colour has come out really dark on my hair. My hair was a really light brown/red and its come out a dark browny purpley reddish colour which only shows in the light. Happy that it’s left my hair soft etc but not too sure about the colour still.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAbsolutely gorgeous colour, super bright and glossy, makes my hair look really healthy. I have very dark hair but it still really shows, I just put it on for a bit longer than it says but it probably works without doing that. Lasts me 3 good months until I have to buy another so amazing value for money!

I was really concerned about using permanent hair colour after a bad experience many years ago, however, my hair was very sun bleached at the ends and the grey hairs were starting to look tatty. I chose to use 7.0 which I felt was the best to match the root growth rather than picking the colour of the sun faded lengths. I knew this meant the overall look would be darker than I currently had but it was more natural to my root growth.

I was delighted by the colour and the ease of application. I have thick, curly, coarse hair and used two boxes. After colouring it felt like I hadn’t because the condition was so good! The greys were covered and it looked great. There was no smell, minimal mess – very impressed. My only slight issue was that the colour pulled some red/orange tones but I have that as an underlying hint in my hair anyway. This was resolved with using purple shampoo. Overall this hair colour is amazing and it’s left me feeling much more confident.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersA bit darker than I would like – I wish they would do a 6.5 lightest brown shade. I usually use John Frieda’s lightest brown but wanted a semi permanent colour as getting fed up of the dryness of my hair. I’d removed the John Frieda dye with a colour remover over a week ago before using this. Unfortunately I realised too late that this dye was permanent.

The dye itself has a lovely texture when applying it compared to all the other brands I have used. My hair does look like it has a bit of shine and doesn’t look quite as dark in the light as I thought it was. Apologies for my hair style – I usually have a bob but it has grown out so not much of a style to it.

Overall it’s a good quality hair dye and as light browns go, is not as dark as some.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality - better than many others

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersThis was the first time I dyed my hair and I made the brave decision to do it myself (as I was bored during Lockdown).

It was really simple, easy to mix and apply on the hair. It comes with the instructions and you can just follow that.

I actually wanted a subtle balayage finish and therefore didn’t use the bottle provided. I instead had a mixing bowl and a brush and cut up some foil to replicate what they do at salons. There’s a lot of YouTube videos that you can find that do just that. I watched a lot of different ones, and for my hair type before doing it myself. I definitely recommend checking them out if your not experienced in dying your hair.

As for the result, I was quite happy. Firstly because I have very dark brown hair (almost looks black), it’s the darkest shade you can have, so I knew seeing any colour without bleach/lightning would be close to impossible. I therefore just wanted to experiment with a colour that was very bright and just on the ends of my hair. (So if it did look awful I could just chop the ends off).

The first time I attempted it, the colour came out brown, and looked lighter in some shades of light but it was difficult to catch on camera. Sometimes there was shades of red and purple. It basically changed everyday, getting lighter.

I wanted to see more result and therefore bought another box, and repeated the process. This time the result was noticeable in any light. I achieved a brown/ginger red tone to my ends. I was happy with this, the technique I used also made sure it was a gradual blend upwards so it didn’t look bad.

I also have curly/wavy, hair so it’s easier to cover up mistakes then on straight hair.

My hair is thick so I needed more product and bought more boxes. I used three in total, two in on go and one just by itself.

The second time I left it longer than recommended and that worked on my hair a lot better.

I think it’s best to just rinse and dry one piece of hair and see if the colours shows as you want it, if not then leave it for longer.

I also wanted to really experiment with this colour and see what it would look like on my roots (I definitely don’t recommend anyone to try this), but I ended up with hot roots. (It’s not the fault of the product, but just something I wanted to try to see how the colour would look on me if I had lighter hair).

I’ve bought this brought in 5.3 in golden brown too, to complete the balayage look. (It was the same price at Tesco).

In all I’m very happy with the product and the experimenting was fun.

    Pros:
    – No smell of dye
    – Easy application
    – Quick results
    – Lots of colours to pick from
    – Good price
    – Decent size (unless u have long thick hair, you’ll need more).
    – Long lasting colour

    Cons:
    – My hair became very dry gradually. You have to keep on top of conditioning your hair and use hair serums and oils to keep the smoothness. I have frizzy hair and I needed to do more caring for my hair afterwards. Although the immediate result will give you very smooth shiny hair, after 5-6 washes it became dry. There is however enough conditioner to last you a while. Just don’t forget to use it.
    – ALERT: Does not cover greys ! (I have a couple greys it did not cover them, it did however colour my brown hair).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun experimenting in lockdown!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMy hair went through a professional 2-phase bleaching process (didn’t have the guts to try it myself) from darkest brown to medium blonde. The hairdresser recommended this product as it has lots of oils in it and ammonia free. My hair is 2-toned, slightly ombre effect. I started off with 6.3 and 7.0 but they were too dark and too red for what I wanted to achieve so moved up to 7.13 and 8.0 and they worked really well. 7.13 toned down the redness. I have to leave the dye on for an hour for it to absorb fully and I need to dye every 3-4 weeks as the roots start to show. I think the longevity is slightly shorter but the quality of the product makes it up. I would welcome more shades to choose from to be honest. Something that’s in between 8.0 and 8.31 a bit on the ashy rather than the reddish side. I recommend this product!

Golden Review Award: 148 From Our UsersAs we are not able to get out due to virus, my roots were terrible about 2 inches. I normally get full head at hairdresser, so I decide I was going to streak my hair along the top to break up my root to make it look better. My hair is difficult to colour has a tendency to go yellow / orange tones, I have to keep bleach on hair a long time at hairdresser to get colour I want and even then it can need toning. I was worried that I might end up with orange/ yellow hair when using this home bleach kit, but it has done a amazing job on my hair for home kit!!!! I don’t know if this is because it has bleaching cream and bleach powder that u mix with developer as when I done kits before it was just the powder and my hair has had warm tones. I am so pleased with this I am going to show my hairdresser the kit I used. I did leave it on abit longer than recommend but i know how long hairdresser leave bleach on my hair. My hair is dark I would use this kit again amazing!! I didn’t need to tone but will use silver shampoo next wash.
