After seeing it on stage four times i couldnt get enough! The cast was great and singing brilliant. Such a brilliant cast. Was worried how they were going to record it (like one long view like theatre) but they captured everything brilliantly
I’ve been a fan of the movie for years, my niece got me onto the musical a couple of years ago but going to a cramped theatre just isn’t practical for me.
I’ve watched many if the unofficial filming, and while this version might not be my all time favourite cast, the professional recording certainly makes up for it, and the sing along version is great fun, though probably not for my neighbours
The original Heather’s is one of my all time favorite cult movies. The idea that they had turned it into a musical chilled me to the bone. I needn’t have worried the play retains the wit and sass of the original combined with some good if not initially memorable songs. OK the violence has been toned down slightly as this is aimed at a younger audience. The cast are all excellent and wisely the producers decided to record a live performance rather than expand it into movie musical which proberbly would not have worked.
Having put off watching Heathers for years I came across a video of it in lockdown and since then have become a fan. Whilst the film is very witty and cleverly written with a great storyline it isn’t a film that I’d want to rewatch too often as it feels like it’s lacking in something, the music. For this reason I much prefer the musical as it adds to an already great film and makes it even more perfect. Who knew that such a dark storyline could be so much fun to watch!
The musical will be very familiar to any fans of the film as a lot of the dialogue and well known moments have been adapted or taken straight from the film and put on stage. What really makes the musical special though is Laurence O’Keefe’s music. I was already a fan of his work in the musical Legally Blonde and his work in Heathers is just as good, if not better. There are so many upbeat tunes that will make you want to watch the show again and again but there are also lots of more serious songs that show the vulnerabilities of the characters in such an effective way.
The cast in this version of Heathers is fantastic and in my opinion one of the stronger casts the U.K. have had. Ailsa is one of my favourite Veronica’s so it is great to see her portrayal filmed for DVD. She brings a lot of depth to the character and has an incredible voice. I like the relationship she shares with Simon as JD but sometimes I feel like this JD is a bit too nice. The Heathers are brilliantly cast and some of my favourites to watch in the roles. I love the innocence that Teleri brings to Macnamara, the boldness Duke shows and the fierce but lovable character Maddi brings to Chandler and all three of them have amazing voices.
However much I love this show though, there were some things from the filming which left me disappointed. I found that for a lot of the show there were far too many closeups and views of the audience. I don’t mind seeing the audience every now and then but when it’s in the middle of the scene it’s a little distracting. As for the close ups, it seemed at every given opportunity we had a close up of someone which meant that for a lot of the group dance numbers you couldn’t see all that was happening which is frustrating.
One instance in particular of this happening is when Veronica mentions that the classroom discussion has stirred up emotions she hasn’t felt since hands across America. In the film we see Veronica laughing and then turning it into a cry to cover it up. Whilst this happens in the show you wouldn’t know from this filmed version as we only get a close up of Veronica and JD as they are crying which completely changes the context of the scene when we didn’t get to see the laughing because of the close up we had on another character. If we had a wider view of the stage this might’ve been noticed in the background.
The DVD itself is shown as a “special edition” but it is not what I’d call a special edition with the only addition being the backstage interviews. I did enjoy watching these but I also found they got a bit repetitive after a while as they kept saying similar or the same thing and I found it odd to have such a long section convincing me to watch Heathers when I’m watching this on the DVD I’ve already bought with the intention of watching.
It would have been nice to have had lyrics to the songs or an easy way to get to the songs but this is not included in the DVD. The scene selection doesn’t even take you to a specific song, it seems to be all very random. There isn’t even a scene that starts at the start of Act 2. I can work out which song is in which scene as I’ve seen it so many times but it would’ve been nice to have mostly a song per scene for easy viewing.
I think one of the most disappointing things about the DVD is that there are no subtitles. I personally do not need subtitles but when my friend wanted to turn them on she discovered there was none. This is such a shame as it leaves it inaccessible for those who need subtitles to be able to watch.
I’m really pleased that a filmed version of the stage show has been recorded and despite the issues I have with the filming it still does a great job of showing all the best bits of the musical. I have watched this many many times already and I’m sure I’ll continue watching it many more times as this is a musical that once you start watching you won’t be able to get enough of!
Perfect. Loved it. Beautiful. Although I will say it TOOK long enough to come out in the uk!!! Well worth the wait though.
It’s a great show performed by an incredibly talented cast. Songs are catchy, performances are amazing and is a must see show!
This is an absolutely fantastic DVD. I watched it on the Icon channel and have waiting for its release to own. My only complaint is the DVD Menu. It does not have any chapter names nor is it divided by song titles. You choose from one of 12 tiny pictures at the bottom of the screen with no accompanying information. As such it is not possible to go for a favourite song (apart from the bonus disc). But that aside this, the DVD is an absolute must for any Heathers fan and the picture and sound quality are incredible.
When I placed the order the item said it comes with a poster. However, the DVD does not come with a poster. Today the listing has changed.
I watched this on Icon film channel who also has the orginal movie in its catalouge. I really enjoyed watching this musical – The leading actors were super and all the cast worked well together. The story of Veronica Sawyer becoming a “Heather” one of the unique group at school. The Heather’s want to be cool and don’t like the outsiders so either ignore them or pick on them and this leads Veronica to fall out with her best friend Martha and then fall out with the Heather’s by defending Martha. When Martha meets JD things change and a spate of murders rock the school. The songs are very well sung and performed. The show is a black comedy and can be a bit dark at times. Its a very good show and leaves you with food for thought
are you a Heather or a Veronica?
Excellent, bought this so my son could watch the show again and again and again as he loves the musical!!
However we had no poster included with ours- it states we get a poster??
Heathers The Musical at The Other Palace is such an incredible show which I have seen multiple times. I highly recommend going to see it.
