The house of the dragon is a fantasy story from the game of thrones. The special effects were brilliant made the dragons very real. The battle scenes were good exciting in parts. The story and acting was good hard to follow in parts. The series is value for money pleased with the purchase.

Delivered in efficient likely time. At first not sure what to expect this game of thrones prequel not to mention haven’t observed the latter, held the interest once seen trailers. Might get a idea into this, first glance casting good dialogue and intrigue dragons are rendered. In its own right bearings setting up introducing the players like a chess board, developing talented characters. Little slower disorientating for my liking, jumps at times several instances too much.royal plotting depravity political intrigue becomes clear the series is war with itself

It lacks a little of the polish and sense of distance and scope of GoT and the lack of a map at the start of the episode is a small detriment. It is entertaining enough to be rightly considered a good addition to the GoT universe

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersA five disc dvd box set containing all ten episodes of season one of ‘House of the Dragon.’ This is a fantasy show. And a prequel to ‘Game of Thrones.’ On the vague offchance you haven’t seen the latter, you might be able to get into this. But I think the odds are you most likely have.

This is based on George RR Martin’s book ‘Fire and Blood’ which is the history of the Targaryen family. Rulers of the fantasy kingdom of Westeros at a point in his story. Said book is all about them. I’ve not read it so can’t compare.

Set over one hundred and seventy years before Game of Thrones, when dragons were still around, opening narration implies that it’s going to end in war.

The story sees a power struggle begin when the King names his daughter as heir. A Queen? It’s never happened in Westeros before! As said Princess and another girl grow up, the struggle for power goes on. It all comes to a head in due course….

That’s a quick summary. This has a fair few main characters. I can’t say I remembered all their names off the top of my head by the end of the season. But I did remember who they were. As you do. So it’s not desperately hard to follow.

It does have some time jumps. There are gaps of years between some episodes. Which do result in some recastings at various points. This is initially jarring. You do get used to it though.

This has excellent production values. They look a lot better than ‘the Wheel of Time.’ And it’s an eighteen certificate. As with the previous show there’s strong language violence gore and adult moments.

At the heart of this is quite an interesting story about two girls who start as friends but get sent down very different paths. That’s not the sole story though, as each of the main cast does manage to be very three dimensional. Matt Smith as the rather unpredictable Daemon is the highlight. He offers a very compelling portrayal of a chaotic man whom you can never be sure about.

The dragons are very well rendered.

This is worth bearing with, as it does come to a head in due course. The last two episodes in particular are pretty gripping stuff. Not being familiar with what source material there is on this occasion does mean I found myself wanting to know how it would turn out. Since the season ends with a lot up in the air, I will definitely be back for season two.

Good and decent fantasy drama. I am glad I got into this.

Each episode run fifty five to sixty seven mins [approx].

Language and subtitle options on the dvds are:

    Languages: English, French, German.
    Subtitles: English, Dutch, French, German.

    Extras:

Spread across the first two discs, the box promises an hour or so of these.

    Disc one:

Welcome to Westeros. A five min overview of the whole thing.
A new reign. A three min long overview of the start of production.
Returning to Westeros. Three mins of largely the same as above.
Before the dragons. An illustrated history with George RR Martin. A mere four mins of backstory of the world building of the setting.
Height of an empire. Three mins on the cast and the characters.
Noble Houses. Three mins on the noble houses of the story.
Familiar places. Four mins on recreating locations from the previous show.

The above do get very repetitious. One particular quote from one production staff member crops up four times across them. I don’t think any are essential or important viewing.

Disc two: return to the seven kingdoms. Twenty four mins that starts as a general overview, then gets into a lot of production details. This is the only extra I would say is worth watching, as the later production stuff in it is quite interesting

Introducing the characters. Nine features that can be watched in a row or all at once. Each is the actor talking about their character. Each lasts about ninety seconds. And won’t tell you anything you’ve not already learned if you’re watched the season before you watch this.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is the first series spin off from the highly acclaim Game Of Thrones. This plot is set almost 180 years before the birth of Denyearis Tygerian (Game of Thrones). Great acting and wonderful entertainment. If you enjoyed Game of Thrones, well, you also have to get this.

We don’t have Sky or HBO, but no problem as this box set enabled us to watch the whole series in a week. Up to Game Of Thrones standards. Looking forward to season two.

One of the best shows. I actually think it’s either on par with game of thrones or even better. Characters are great and so are the actors. And the age change is great as the casting is fantastic. The CGI is just incredible and the make up team for viserys is just wow.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersYou buy a 4k set because you have a 4k TV (ideally OLED) and a sound system to show it off (e.g Atmos surround). Thankfully the set compliments these thing very well. It’s a gorgeous looking show that clearly has a massive budget. The bonus? It’s actually a good show too, great actors and well written. It was rightly a success for HBO and they’ve put out a quality set to do it proud. The only downer? No commentaries, however this hasn’t been a thing for a while. It’s just a shame as I remember Game of Thrones sets back in the day getting one or even two per episode sometimes.

The added extra making of’s are well put together and insightful though ultimately inessential versus the main event. I rarely return back to making of’s personally so see them only as another nice added bonus to add to the overall value.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI was eagerly anticipating the release of House of the Dragon, and I can honestly say that it exceeded all of my expectations. The first season is a masterful work of television, with incredible writing, acting, and production values that make it one of the best shows of 2022.

The story takes place in the world of Game of Thrones, but it has a fresh and unique feel to it that sets it apart from the original series. The characters are complex and engaging, with their own motivations and desires that drive the plot forward. The performances by the cast are outstanding, with standout performances by Emma D’Arcy and Matt Smith as the Targaryen siblings Rhaenyra and Viserys.

What impressed me most about House of the Dragon was the attention to detail in the production design. The sets, costumes, and special effects all combine to create a fully realized world that feels both familiar and new. The action sequences are breathtaking, and the dragons are rendered with incredible realism and detail.

Overall, House of the Dragon is a must-watch for any fan of fantasy or television in general. It’s a thrilling, epic adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this incredible show, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an immersive and exciting viewing experience.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our Usersis an American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO. A prequel to Game of Thrones (2011–2019), it is the second television series in the A Song of Ice and Fire franchise. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik served as the showrunners for the first season. Based on Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood, the series is set about 100 years after the Seven Kingdoms are united by the Targaryen Conquest, nearly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. Featuring an ensemble cast, the show portrays the events leading up to the beginning of the decline of House Targaryen, a devastating war of succession known as the “Dance of the Dragons

House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019, with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography starting in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The series premiered on August 21, 2022, with the first season consisting of ten episodes. Five days after its premiere, the series was renewed for a second season. Sapochnik departed as showrunner after the first season, leaving Condal to serve as the sole showrunner for the second season.

The first season received highly positive reviews, with praise towards its character development, visual effects, writing, score by Ramin Djawadi and performances (particularly Considine, Smith, D’Arcy, Alcock, and Cooke). However, the pacing, specifically of the time jumps, and the dark lighting of some scenes were criticized. The series premiere was watched by over 10 million viewers across the linear channels and HBO Max on the first day, the biggest in HBO’s history. In January 2023, the series won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series — Drama.

It’s good to be back in the land of Westeros with all the drama, in fighting and Dragons.

Like GOT it starts slow building the characters, so it does take a couple of episodes to get into it. But when you do it’s great.

Just a teensy bit of a slow burner (then again so was GoT series 1 – it takes time to develop characters properly) but definitely had me hooked by the end. The series covers a period of many years and the aging of the characters is not consistent – some characters get replaced by older actors, some get prosthetic wrinkles, some just get a new hairstyle and one (distractingly and irritatingly) seems to have a portrait in the loft. But overall this definitely has the potential to push GoT close.

This is (at the moment) not as strong as Game Of Thrones but it is nevertheless a well acted and produced work, loaded with breathtaking swordplay and political manipulative intrigue. It has left me wanting to see more.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersDVD series, boxsets specifically are getting more and more expensive and they respond with cheap flimsy plastic and pile 5 discs on top of each other. Shame on HBO and Warner for joining in. First seasons of GOT and the 2 Romes had beautiful hard cases, what happened to those?
You can tell more and more the episodes written and directed by females. I’m a female but GOT this was not and I loved GOT, ending and all. And HOD is earlier in mentality than GOT yet less violence and sex.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersAs a series, myself and my partner really enjoyed this. Taking place before Game of Thrones, it takes you right back to the world of the Seven Kingdoms. There were times when the story had seemed to jump, and then you realise that so many years have passed since the last episode, so I have to admit to wanting to go through and watch all of this again, so that I don’t miss anything.
The reason that I have only awarded 4 stars is because of the DVD case; all 5 DVDs are stacked one on top of the other. This makes it a pain when trying to change DVDs, but it also makes me worried that they will be more prone to getting scratched/damaged. A couple of them did actually stick when we were viewing them, so I hope that this just doesn’t get worse.
Other than that, for all GoT fans, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

From a story point of view it’s a bit of a slow burner and doesn’t have the scope of GOT but it’s enjoyable all the same.
From a technical point of view the 4k picture is beautiful, not quite Halo 4k stunning but beautiful all the same. The Atmos soundtrack is also fantastic.

4K Steelbook is fantastic, however, i was a little dissapointed in the casing/box that the whole set comes in. A standalone steel isn’t available, only this set. The casing is a flimsy, cardboard piece of ‘rubbish’ to be honest with you. Considering the quality of sets we got when GoT was released, i expected a-lot more.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe opening two episodes provide a strong start to this GoT prequel. The middle of the series has lots of plots and politicking which gets a bit melancholy and intense but stick with it. There is a strong focus on a core group of characters and their lives. Episode six picks up 10 years after the events in episode 5 and has an older actress in the lead role to reflect this. This is a little jarring. As the viewer we’re trying to work out what’s happened in the intervening years and who the new characters are. Although other actors remain unchanged. The events in these episodes are laying the foundation for what is to follow and make more sense as the story unfolds.

There is a very strong conclusion to this series which leaves the viewer eagerly awaiting future series.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersDVD set of HoD season 1. Great to see JRR Martin’s fantasy feudal world again and it looks fabulous and familiar (thank God, as it’s usually impossible to get different/later showrunners to keep with the original style and aesthetic of a show because they absolutely positively must put their stamp on it and impulsively pathologically change everything for no good reason at all). The story is set over a century before the events of GOTs and follows the Targaryen dynasty on the Iron Throne. It jumps forward several years between the start of the series and the middle part but does not lose the story thread. The actors cast look a little weird (compared with the pretty faces in GOT) and there’s plenty of representation for woke-ers. There’s some bonus content on disc 1 and 2, but none 3 and 4. Overall a great return to the most watched tv show on earth. I hope the excellent quality and standard is maintained throughout the run of this show and we don’t get a dumpster-fire ending like the universally despised season 8 of GOT. I also hope the showrunners will treat us to one or two flashback episodes set in Valyria before the Great Doom destroyed it, that place would be cool to see (beyond the scaled model that Viserys was making in his bedroom!).

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersNot much needed to be said about the show… Movie Quality entertainment … love it so far. This DVD set contains 5 discs and they are all stored on one spindle in the middle of the case. You have to pull them all off to get to the disc you want. They also lay on each other with no spacing. I have placed a little bubble wrap between the case and the top disc to fill the void and reduce the risk of the discs moving around and slowly causing surface damage. My Only complaint.
