My HUAWEI wearable device cannot receive message notifications
Your HUAWEI wearable device receives notifications via the Huawei Health app. More exactly, the app reads the messages from the notification panel of the phone and then pushes them to your watch/band.
The wearable appears connected on my phone, but disconnected in the Huawei Health app.
The pairing software of the wearable device is restricted by the phone’s system, so Bluetooth disconnects if the Huawei Health is not allowed to run in the background.

Great watch for my 13 year old. He loves it and it’s affordable. Especially as he wears it to school.
It has a phone finder, steps counter and sleep mapping function which he uses quite alot amongst others.
Instructions are awful- I had to Google it and use you tube to sync it to his phone. We had problems due to the parent lock on his phone which i had to tweak for it to work.
Small size , practical and nice gift to a friend who liked it much
Great fitness track I use it mostly for counting the step I am doing. It has some nice features like sleep tracking and viewing messages on the watch.
Only downside for me is it doesn’t integrate with my fitness pal.
It’s app is also good, only 1 issues sometimes it stops recording my outdoor bike ride.
Also recently it counts a lot less calories I burned compared to fit bit and another brand fitness watch.
Tested in pool all good.
Could the calories burn count be improved.
Great alternative to fitness trackers in the next price band. It’s got some nice features, the connectivity with my phone is good and the screen is very responsive and better than I thought it would be. I would say if you’re purely buying this as a pedometer for tracking steps, I would suggest this isnt as good as the leading brands. Step detection isn’t as refined and you might find it under reports your step count for the day. But as a budget fitness tracker with plenty of features. It’s pretty good
All this why I have the screen brightness at 4 out if 5. This is really good even when out in the sun. On very hot and bright days I might put this in 5/5 but it’s definitely bright enough in all scenarios. Very happy.
Step counter seems to be accurate enough for something like me who just wants to reach 10,000 steps per day. A lot more accurate than the very cheap alternatives I have tried.
The first time I bucked the trend of buying Apple products! It’s a fraction of the price and in most cases has more functionality! Most important asset is it’s near 2 week battery life.
At this price they’ve made great gifts for the whole family
For the price this watch works very well. Easy to connect to app. No complaints
Far more functionality and choice of watch faces than the big player in this game. I’ve had this tracker since April 2023 and have been very impressed with it. Great battery life between charges too! Highly recommended.
I love the large range of exercises available for tracking, the battery life is good and it syncs quickly with my phone. Much better than the fibit I had before this. My only criticism is that there’s no timer or stopwatch, but aside from that I love it!
The watch is comfortable to wear. Took a little time to set up and get use to all the functions, but all fairly user friendly once you get used to it. Seems pretty accurate on the step count, no idea how accurate the heart rate monitor and sleep monitor is, but all very interesting. For the price, I am quite impressed all in all. The only gripe, it would have been good to have outdoor cycling as an option on the list of workouts.
Really impressed with this smart watch so far, easy to use (once I got past the fact that huawei health had to obtained through the huawei app store, as its no longer available on play store) set up was pretty simple. Charges pretty fast and battery life seems good, the features all seem to work well and for the price I’m really impressed. I was bought a fitbit versa 4 for my birthday, and sent it back replacing it with this which I find far superior.
Very happy so far, very comfortable strap – no probs with downloading app or connecting to phone (also 6a!)
Re: the restrictions that Georgina mentions in her excellent review, you can tell your Pixel that you want this app to have the necessary permissions – go into phone system settings/apps/Huawei health/tap the three dots on top right of screen and allow ‘restricted permissions’ – this takes you through to a confirmation/configuration screen…. haven’t recv’d any messages/calls yet to see what the experience is like, so I’ll probably jump off the chair when it does do something!
Upgraded from a Mi band 5 because I couldn’t connect it to my 6a – which is annoying because the Mi did all I needed and it’s still working fine, but now I need to find a new home for it – more electronic/plastic waste is not what the planet needs!!
Bought this as a gift for my friend. It was decent on battery life, good features, touch could be better and responsive. UI could have improvements in terms of allowing to choose the items we want to display in quick access.
One of my favorite features is the heart rate monitor. It’s accurate and constantly tracks my heart rate throughout the day, which is great for keeping an eye on my overall fitness level. The sleep tracking feature is also top-notch. It provides detailed analysis of my sleep patterns and offers suggestions for how to improve the quality of my sleep.
Another feature I really appreciate is the GPS tracking. I love being able to see my route and distance traveled during my runs, and the watch even vibrates to alert me when I’ve reached my daily step goal. The battery life is also impressive. I can wear it for a full week before needing to charge it, which is a major plus.
The sleep tracking and step tracking works well. The watch has correctly IDd when I am going for a walk vs just popping to the shop and prompted me to start tracking an exercise. I am going to explore the workout plans and looking forward to testing swim tracking soon. Looks really good. I’m very pleased with it for the price.
Star deducted for the clunky workaround required to get hold of the Huawei app and connect to my phone, but the app itself is pretty good, comparable with the fitbit app in terms of accessibility IMO. There are some features that don’t work thanks to Google not registering the app as an official one via the Play Store, namely seeing notifications from my phone on the watch. If that’s important to you maybe this isn’t the watch for you. It shows when I’m getting a call but that’s it – no message or email notifications. I’m not big into analysing data and I don’t want a smart watch, I just want to build up some healthy habits and also have a cute digital watch that doesn’t require a tonne of charging so this doesn’t bother me, but it is a shame to have features that are unusable.
So far battery life has been great and the charger is easy to use with a nice magnetic connection, and the watch charges fast.
Out of the box, it feels very well made; looks kind of premium. The amoled screen is outstanding and adds to the ‘more expensive’ feel of the watch. It also makes reading information very clear and easy. The strap has given me no issues and is very comfy.
I tested it properly on a ten-mile hike yesterday. I also had measured the route beforehand and the tracking (set by me as miles) was very accurate. The watch has numerous ‘workouts’ to select for your activity. I used ‘outdoor walk’. This was on for 3.5 hours and measured my heart, calories burnt off, step and miles. It helpfully keeps the clock time on the same screen. Nice feature. Each mile I completed the watch buzzed and flashed up a message. I don’t know if other trackers do this, but it was very useful and motivating for me.
If you want to save battery power on your phone, you can untether the Bluetooth to the watch and also close the Huawei app. The watch continues to measure your workout. When you switch the app and Bluetooth on later, it syncs and collects all your data. The app then produces a useful stats report to look at. I found this insightful.
Issues?
The only issue I’ve had is I can’t, despite all efforts, get the Band 7 to display message notifications from my iPhone 12 Pro. I’ve selected everything and double-checked. It only sends me ‘other alerts’ for things like BBC news alerts. It’s a bit annoying; however I really bought the watch for my hiking and for that it (so far) gets full marks!! I switched off all notifications by the way.
Also the Huawei app is okay but rather clunky. You have to be patient with it.
A final note is that the battery is fantastic. I’ve charged it only once since setting it up a few days ago. It’s still on 70%!!!
Watch recommended if you need a good value fitness tracker with a premium feel.
UPDATE – 07.01.23
I can now receive all notifications to my iPhone 12 Pro from the Band 7. I realised that I had ‘show preview’ switched off on my iPhone for iMessage and WhatsApp. I realised that if you do this, you won’t see any notifications for these apps on the Band 7 as it needs to actually show the message content. So even if you have enabled message notifications everywhere, just make sure ‘show preview’ is switched on for the app on your phone.
Screen Size: The height is ok but I would have preferred a slightly wider screen. Unless you have perfect vision, you might struggle to see all info at first glance.
Screen Face: There are a lot of free screen faces you can choose to download using the linked app. If you choose the watch face to display everything in one screen, the size of info displayed becomes a little harder to read. You cannot use a photo for the watch background.
Fitting: It is pretty good fit for men wrists. Also fits well for women.
Built Quality: For the price its actually pretty good quality. Although it is fairly light, it does not feel cheap and the screen is very responsive and has never hung up, throughout 1 month usage. The strap is nice and soft and flexible (not a rigid plastic).
Main Features: Time, weather, steps, sleep monitor, find your phone, stopwatch, timer, torch, alarm, stress, heart beat, blood oxygen level and a good range of 60+ sporting activity measurements. If configured, Phone app notifications can be replicated in the watch. Messages can be viewed (as they arrive) and very short pre-written replies (yes, no, okay etc and some smilies) can be sent without looking at the phone. You can’t change the pre-written message replies. For phone calls, it alerts you (by vibrating) for an incoming call. You can only reject the call from the watch and there is an option to send a quick call decline message. If you want to answer the call, you will have to use your phone. There is no functionality to answer a phone call using the watch. There is no blood pressure measurement in this watch. All notifications & alerts are by watch vibration. Watch has no sound. There is also not GPS in the watch. To see the watch features and monitor various aspects you have to download the specific app, which is free and has good features. See screen shots of the app.
Battery Life: This is the main reason for 4 stars instead of 5. When you have none of the features activated, you can expect longer battery life, but with all of the above features activated the battery life is less than 5 days. This is still very good battery life, but not quite the 2 weeks it is advertised for light use and 10 days for heavy use. But compared to the “famous brands” it last at least 3 times longer with everything activated.
Charging: The charging port is magnetic and very good quality. Charging time is super fast. You can definitely get more than 50% in less than 30 min. Always 100% charge in about 45 to 50 min which is very good.
I have not used the watch to monitor any sporting or physical activity as of yet. But there is quite a large range of in&outdoor sporting activities you can measure.
Overall I think it is a good starting level watch, with pretty much all the functionality of an expensive watch. The screen size is only a tad narrow but still reasonable. Battery life is not 2 weeks but 5 days is still really good. I think it is of reasonable quality and will last me probably more than 3/4 years, which is okay as I treat my watches as consumables. We bought 2. My wife likes the red colour and pretty much has the same opinion as above. Additionally she likes the incoming call alert vibrating, as she doesn’t always hear the phone ringing if out and about.
Jump on to the HUAWEI website and you will see other options you might want to consider for the prices you have in mind. After using this smart watch I have come to realise that HUAWEI is a half decent brand and I would rather go for this instead of a complete unknown brand. Hopefully this review is of some use to you !
Edit 2Feb2023: When used on treadmill (if your amrs are not moving ie you’ve grabbed the hand rails) it does not detect steps. You can however have your phone in your pocket which will detect steps. Then the overall steps from all sources can be viewed in the app.
Makes you more aware of how much you move.
Encourages me to be more active.
Simple to start a workout.
Rearrange options for easy access (E.g I walk outdoors, I don’t run indoors, can be customised).
Value for money is good.
Highly customisable with wallpapers (some paid, some free), own photo etc.
Waterproof – though I’ve only worn it in the shower, haven’t swum with it on yet.
Sleep tracker is interesting, I like that it records naps.
Cons:
Strap can become uncomfortable – needs to be worn fairly tightly but as a result, skin can catch in the silicone holes.
Step count is always lower than my phone despite being worn correctly and completely reset.
Seem to have to swing your arm before steps are properly registered – maybe designed more for runners than walkers.
American date format is infuriating – meaning I can only select a handful of wallpapers that show ‘FRI 30’ rather than 12/30 which is alien to UK users.
Overall it’s good, definitely room for improvement, but if you just want a cheap-ish fitness watch with a reasonable app that links to Apple Health, it’s worth getting one.
The HR monitor is pretty accurate and consistent with the Fitbit. Compared to my chest strap during football, and weightlifting, the HUAWEI band 7 was within 5% tolerance. These watches struggle a bit at extreme ranges of HR but this one is good enough for me. With previous crappy models I really could not even tell I had been working out – seems they push out random HRs! And those also only check HR every 5 or 10 minutes. Pointless for exercise.
The step counter is pretty accurate too and the app also combines Apple Health so it takes step infor from my phone as an additional source.
There is a guy on the internet which tested this tracker’s SpO2 against a proper device and it looked pretty reasonable. He went on a flight and the watch performed well, going between 98% range (-+2% tolerance) and 90% which is the normal in a plane cabin.
The build quality seems pretty decent, responsive touchscreen and useful screens.
Very useful features are brightness control, ability to see time and other info during workout mode, ‘screen on for 5 minutes’ (to see your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night !), find my phone with an audible beep, weather integration, messaging app integration (with FB messenger, WhatsApp, texts, email and probably others – the screen lets you read the message too, and scroll). All these work very well for me.
The sleep tracker seems reasonably accurate and consistent with the Fitbit experience.
I like that it has a side button (very annoying feature in Fitbits is lack of a button as if you’re sweaty you can’t really activate the screen with the double press on the Inspire.
Also got timers and other features. The app works well, not as good as the Fitbit app but it’s fine. Better than the cheaper stuff around.
Finally, the other amazing thing seems to be the battery. It’s been 6 days on first full charge and still 37%. I would not get an Apple Watch despite the superior performance because it’s another thing to charge almost every day.
Watch itself is ideal for someone with small wrists. I can’t comment on battery life just yet but my gt2’s battery is still 10-14 days. I’d recommend this product for under 50, if you catch the current offer you can get it for 35 which is amazing for the latest model, complete with all of the additional features, sleep, health, stress, to name a few.
