Iello | King of Tokyo Game (2016 Edition) | Board Game |
Iello | King of Tokyo Game (2016 Edition) | Board Game | Ages 8+ | 2-6 Players | 30 Minutes Playing Time
Gameplay
At the start of each turn, you roll six dice, which show the following six symbols: 1, 2, or 3 Victory Points, Energy, Heal, and Attack. Over three successive throws, choose whether to keep or discard each die in order to win victory points, gain energy, restore health, or attack other players into understanding that Tokyo is YOUR territory. The fiercest player will occupy Tokyo, and earn extra victory points, but that player can’t heal and must face all the other monsters alone!
Top this off with special cards purchased with energy that have a permanent or temporary effect, such as the growing of a second head (which grants you an additional die), body armour, nova death ray, and more….
In order to win the game, one must either destroy Tokyo by accumulating 20 victory points, or be the only surviving monster once the fighting has ended.

We’ve had this game out on the regular. Quick and easy to set up and teach new people.
I love this game. It’s easy to learn and takes about 20 mins to play. The cards add a little extra interest so the games don’t play out exactly the same way every time.
We picked it up quickly. Kept my child interested for quite a while. Very expensive for what it is and not as sturdy as I’d like, but lots of fun.
Easy to learn & remember, short game doesn’t drag on, liked it do much purchased again as gift for family
This is the most successful board game we’ve yet played with our competitive, slightly nerdy, game-loving six year old. He absolutely loves it, and it’s a properly complex (yet simple) game for adults too – we’d play it happily with friends even without children present. Highly recommended.
Great game easy to learn and to teach to othe
Great game, never played it before and up and running in no time. Looking at getting the expansion already. 5 Stars.
Easy game lern and play. Can be a quick game and fun for kids. Does get a little harder with 5 or 6 players
Great fun easy to grasp game for all ages. Great fit kids especially moving away from standard board games
just needed 3 people and it worked aboslutly fine.
Great game. Some of the 2016 version cards are super powerful, but you can take theme out if you don’t like them.
Had played this at a cousins house so we’re excited to get our own copy. Great for all ages. Our 9 year old enjoyed it, as did the teenager and adults. Easy to play and we found some videos to explain the rules too.
We had already played this with friends so it does take some learning but is great fun. It can be quite a competitive game for a family to play and the power up additional pack is well worth it.
I had known of this game for years as I often saw it at board game nights, but had never actually played it myself. It came highly rated on both Amazon and Board Game Geek so decided to give it a go.
Our first game was with two adults and two kids (recently turned 7 and 9yo). I took a little bit of time reading the rules beforehand, so we could get straight into playing. The rules were fairly clear, the bits that seemed confusing (mainly the leaving Tokyo mechanic) made sense quickly once we started playing.
My kids have grown up playing games, the other adult we played with is not a gamer, and everyone was quick to understand the game. The first game took us quite a while, but in my experience that’s normal for new games where none of the players have played before. I imagine subsequent plays will come in closer to the 30 minute mark predicted on the box.
We love the artwork of this game, it’s very evocative and my kids were very enthusiastic about picking their characters and play-acting with them. The components feel high quality and fun to play with. The power cards make the game really interesting and will ensure good replayability.
One final thing I like about the game is that it has a small footprint, i.e. it doesn’t take over a whole table.
To sum up: simple gameplay, good for kids & adults, interesting mechanics, great artwork, quick playtime & small footprint.
Amazing game! Gift from my wife.. both with my 7y old son got hooked on it. It requires more attention, strategies. But once you get it – it is fun and amazing game for kids and adults too!
Bought this game as something else to do in lockdown with my rambunctious 6yo. What a thoroughly excellent purchase! Really easy to learn (plenty of youtube vids if you find it easier seeing it played), even for my son. Fast paced and exciting gameplay, short attention span friendly, fabulous artwork. Kiddo wanted to play again straight away and is still asking for more. Also a fun game for adults, maybe not for the hardcore board gamers but it’s a great casual game to play with friends.
Love this game! So quick to pick up and so much fun to play. If you like games that are a little different, you can certainly do a lot worse.
The game is simple to learn and quick enough to maintain the interest of young children.
The gameplay is fun, varied and gives enough tactical options to give excellent re-playability.
Always seems feels to fresh and exciting where some longer games can become a little tiresome at times.
Would recommend the use of a decent quality dice tray with this game as it enhances the experience and keeps the dice off the floor!
Was introduced to this game by a friend and finally bought my own set. It has quickly become a family favourite. It’s not too complex and the mixture of luck and strategy is ideal.
I got it for my 14 year old nephew but it soon became the game for the whole family, very competitive and lots of laugh. Kids kept pestering us all the time to play, over and over again and the beauty is it doesn’t drag on line monopoly, it’s actually quite exciting game, even for adults.
Had this game a while now and we love it.
Simple to learn, yet different every time you play thanks to the cards you can ‘buy’.
We normally play 3-4 times in a row before moving on to other things.
The dice are a nice size, which makes them easy to find if they get dropped.
The little green power up cubes are more difficult, but not my much.
Overall we love this game and will be keeping it for a long time to come.
great we games played it many times at the local games club so got it to play with my 9 year old son. he enjoyed trying to beat his dad.
the mechanics of this game are solid and bring out surprising strategy and patience.
Brilliant well thought out speedy game perfect for younger family members, 8+ is recomended and is spot on IMO. My 8 year old loved reading through the cards and planning out possible picks for futre games. Well worth it.
It’s a very simple game that is about 50% luck 50% mild strategy. Quick to finish, in about 20 mins usually, game’s done. Obviously this will suit some and not others. For my kids, who don’t have very long attention spans, it’s perfect. Lots of replay value. Since we got this game, it’s the only one they bring out whenever they want to play a board game. The components are all very well-made – vibrant and multi-coloured, card pieces made of very strong, thick card, playing cards are laminated with a glossy sheen, and the plasticky bits aren’t flimsy or tacky. The instructions are printed on good glossy paper and in colour. I am impressed with how well-made the materials are, so I feel it is worth the 25 odd that it costs. For what the game is, it can seem expensive, but it does come made with quality materials. Will certainly last many hours of play with primary-school-aged kids. Cannot even compare to the quality of materials for monopoly for instance.
I’m not sure this would really appeal to as many adults. It would probably appeal more to kids who like action films, monsters, superheroes, gaming, etc. Not so much for kids who aren’t into such things. It is a nice board game to take the kids off wanting screen time for a bit… for us, it turned out to be a good buy.
Love it, great game for the whole family. It’s simple enough for my 5 year old daughter to play, although an adult needs to keep score for her and help her to read and understand the cards.
Some of the cards are quite complex, particularly the ones that involve the tokens so we just don’t use them, but it might be different playing with adults once everyone is used to the game.
I love finding games that I can play with the kids that involve some kind of strategy and this definitely falls into that category. It’s our first dice-rolling game, but also kind of a deck-building game and it’s a great addition to our collection. Highly recommended.
This purchase was for a gift as when I was playing my copy with people they said how much they loved it 10 minutes into the game.
I’m an avid board gamer and have a lot of board games by anyone’s standard. I also introduce modern hobby designer games to a lot of new gamers and theses always a crowd pleaser. Just one thing when learning it just figure out the card effects as they come up (3 at any one time are available for players to buy) rather than try and learn/teach them all up front as it’s too much information to take it all at once and isn’t necessary to do so. The vast majority are actually pretty straightforward!
Enjoy the game!
Brilliant game. Great quality components. Great dice. Love the artwork. Game is easy to pick up. 8yr old daughter picked it up quickly over a couple of run throughs although needs an adult to keep an eye on scoring. Doesn’t take long to play so keeps everyone interested. Little bit of strategy in picking the cards and deciding on whether to go for victory points or the kill keeps it fresh. Played it loads. Everyone should have this in their collection.
I have the 1st edition version of this game and it is just as good as before, some alternative characters here with different artwork for the originals.
It’s an excellent family game, which is very easy to setup and play.
After playing this for a while, I do recommend looking into the Power Up! Expansion, just adds more to the game.
King of Tokyo is a family board game where each player fights to either be the first player to collect 20 victory points, or to be the last monster left alive. Each turn the player rolls the 6 dice, then re rolls any or all of them a maximum of 2 times. The result of the dice dictates the outcome of the turn. They might gain victory points, or seal damage, or gain energy cubes or any combination. Energy cubes can be used to buy cards from the card deck which provides your monsters with beneficial continuous effects or abilities.
This is a brilliantly simple game that has endless replayability. It can be played from a young age, provided the players can read. The game and it’s components are of an excellent quality.
I have played it with my family, including my 4 year old who enjoys rolling the dice. And I’ve played it with my mates in the pub. In every setting as soon as one 20 minute game ends, the next words spoken are always “time for another?”
An excellent game, Would definitely recommend.
This game is amazing and really refreshing. My only gripe is that it’s not as much fun with two players since a lot of the cards are designed for more than 2 players. For example, they might damage the players on either side of you, or they might only come into effect when another player dies. Still an essential purchase IMO.
Currently my 9year old daughters favourite game. So much fun. Theme & art perfect for all the family. Addictive & unpredictable until the last roll.
Who doesn’t want to upgrade Japanese style monsters and fight for supremacy?
A simply brilliant game with a deceptively simple game mechanic that actually has a great deal of depth in regards to the strategies used. Perfect at around 30 mins a game for the short attention spans of my boys. Unhesitatingly recommended.
I preferred the 2014 edition as the characters and art were more to my taste. Had to replace it though as my local Nissan garage stole it (long story). Still a great, well balanced game.
Fabulous game bought as my boys were using a friends copy. Bought the expansion set as well. My sons are absolute board game nerds and this is a great game for all the family. Very pleased
I bought this after first playing King of New York at a local gaming night and although I liked the game I thought my friends might prefer the original version as it’s a little less taxing on the brain.
So far I’ve played this as a two player with my wife and as a four player with some of our friends. It’s definitely better with more people, but it still works as a two player game which is a real bonus.
Games seem to last around 15 – 20 minutes which is perfect as most of the other games we regularly play (Catan, Cash N Guns, Betrayal at house on the hill etc) last quite a bit longer so this is a good option for kicking off the night.
