Instead of having to make a complete loop around your bike, etc – the loop at one end means a single length is all you need. The cinch still consumes a good 5-6 inches, so I wish this was may another 6 inches longer.

My biggest complaint is the protective cover. It stops at least 1 full link short at either end, so there’s always bare metal touching my bike. You’d think they could have spent another 2 cents for a full length cover!

Beware – this puppy is H.E.A.V.Y. You are not going to sling this over your shoulder and go. If carrying on a bike, you’re going to need to plan how you’re going to strap it down so it doesn’t bounce all over the place.

This is the toughest chain i’ve seen. Weighs a ton, but sometimes I leave the chain at home and just take the lock and works fine. Looks like new after a year using it, and looks like it will last forever. Excellent value for money

I had bought a Kryptonite Keeper 712 recently and liked it. However, the 7mm chain can be cut with bolt cutters. I wanted a more substantial deterrent. The Kryptonite 1275 seems like the maximum weight I was prepared to actually carry on a regular basis and the cinch idea was intriguing.
Of note when I first opened the 1275 was how short 75cm felt compared to the 120cm of the Keeper. At first I was skeptical the 1275 was going to work. However after a few minutes of trying different combos I found the cinch design had every bit as much “useful” length as the 712. I settled on cinching around whatever pole or rack and putting the chain directly through the rear wheel with the Evolution 4 padlock on the lower frame. Seems to work well.
The 1275 weighs 6.9 lbs (3128g) vs the 712 at 3.9 lbs (1766g). For that extra weight the 1275 is substantially stronger. Side by side there is no comparison. If a thief wants my bike they will need an angle grinder. Nothing is going to stop an angle grinder but bolt cutters and hammers would be pointless.
Two slight cons to the 1275 – the padlock rattles easily compared to the 712 if wrapped around the seat post and secondly the protective fabric sleeve is slightly too short in my opinion. I carry the 1275 in a bag on the rear rack so it doesn’t make any noise. Overall I’m happy with the 1275 and would buy it again.

Big beefy chain and a clever cinch idea

Tough lock to deter thieves, a bit heavy to carry around, we put it in our rear rack bag, don’t notice the weight on an EBike. We also use it to secure the bike to the rack and rack to the hitch. Already had one Ebike stolen due to only using cable locks, no more cable locks, only takes seconds to cut the cable with wire cable cutters. Also using Abus U lock and a Kryptonite LS U lock for added security.

It’s a very good and sturdy lock the chain is thicker than I thought. The thing is that it’s so heavy that I don’t know if I’m going to carry it everywhere with me. I live in a condo and I have mi bike in a common bike room so I think I will use this lock to store my bike in the bike room and I’ll get a lighter chain to carry it for the quick stops in the street. Like a kryptonite keeper.

A beast of a lock. Same weight as 2x fahgetabboudit locks but flexible. I use it at home to chain to a heavy duty metal shelf. 12mm very solid.

Heavy but good for secure lock up

Good heavy chain. Looks well made and secure.
My only negative is the cloth cover should be longer. The last few links on both ends are not covered when it’s wrapped around my bike and it’s difficult not to let the chain scrape against the bike frame.
Also, being a heavy secure chain it’s actually heavy to carry in a backpack. Better to have a rack to carry it.
I paid for the 5 year bike theft protection available with this lock which gives me more peace of mind.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a truly authoritative chain. It’s _heavy_. So heavy it’s just barely portable. I suspect, when it’s warmer and I’m biking to the same location daily, I’ll end up leaving it attached to the bike rack. The chain is _just_ long enough to wrap around the bike frame, the front wheel, and the bike rack. In situations where it’s not long enough, the “noose” aspect is very handy to have.
It feels really good to have the bike locked up such that nobody with a merely hand tool has a chance of stealing it. Breaking this chain would involve power tools, and YouTube videos show it taking at least a few minutes with lots of noise and showers of sparks.
I love the chain; I’m less overjoyed by the lock. The lock is just a little sticky; twice in perhaps 20 uses I haven’t been able to unlock it without repeated tries. (According to YouTube, this seems to be a known problem.) I’ve rather thoroughly lubed it and I’m hoping that repeated use solves the problem. It _is_ really nice that there’s a sliding cover for the keyhole to keep out dust and dirt.
I’m locking up using the chain plus the Kryptonite New York M18 U lock; there seems to be a difference of opinion on whether a heavy chain or a heavy U lock is harder to break, so I’m going with both.

    One major chai

A really secure lock which feels really solid. I use this one for securing two bikes together at home. The main downside is the weight but as this is used at home it’s fine but I would use a less heavy one if I was out out and about.

  17. Anonymous says:

I took the 1275 version which allows me to grab the front wheel and the bicycle frame together with a small sized anchor object. Despite the best intentions behind the design, the 1275 is quite short to do more than that if used by its own. This chain is 9/10 on producer’s scale so it’s my overnight reinforcement to the 10/10 lock that I use for the back wheel and frame.
Beware that all of these are only deterrents, anyone should go through youtube videos to understand what actual protection is getting.

Amazing lock. Having that noose feature is wonderful. The lock is not as heavy as I expect it to be. I can carry it in my backpack all day no problem at all. Lock was a bit sticky when it came but I sprayed it with silicone lube and it works just fine now. Very solid! I’m sure anyone would think twice before they decided to take this lock on!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI trust this lock as it would be very hard to break! I I use this lock to lock up my expensive e-bike, finding it easy to use.

The ring on the chain is handy as it provides a longer length when you noose it around poles. (Put the chain through the ring on the end of the chain to noose it)

This lock unlocks and locks easy. Note: I did find it sticky and hard to open after a month, but Kryptonite help me solve the issue I was having. The lock needed a little oil.

How to oil your lock quoted from an email Kryptonite’s sent me:
“This is what we find works best to keep your lock in its best working condition lubricate the lock cylinder. You can also try using lubrication, such as Finish Line, in the key way to flush out any dirt or debris. Do NOT use WD-40, WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant and will, in fact, remove any type of lubricant that is in the cylinder. Use a lubricant that has a silicone, graphite or Teflon base only. Make sure the lock cylinder is facing up and spray or pour the lubricant into the cylinder. Let it sit for 5 minutes. Place a rag on your workstation and turn the lock over onto the rag for a minute or so. This should be done several times a year to keep your lock working properly.” Thanks Kryptonite for the Pro Tip 🙂

    Strong as an hangmans noose!

Nein !
    Klare Kaufempfehlung meinerseits

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBought this to protect my $1600 investment and when it arrived it was way beefier than expected. I’m ok with this. Seems it might be a bit big to lug around on a bicycle, but put in a bag it shouldn’t be that bad. This thing is seriously diesel. The noose feature also allows various ways to lock up. I’m no expert but the effort you would have to go through to defeat this would draw a lot of attention and take a lot of effort. Your common thief is not going to be carring around a cordless power cutter/grinder, they will likely have some bolt cutters and maybe a hammer. Put this thing on, park in a good location and you should be good to go. The ATPO is nice to have too. Remember, in the end any lock or chain can be defeated with the right tools, this thing will just make them really work for it and will make the common thief, who is looking for a quick steal, look for an easier target. Included with my review is a photo with a Sharpie for scale.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersImportant Edit:
This chain is heavy, the lock is thick and the whole package is bulky. I bought it in conjunction with Kryptonite’s 4′ 10mm cable, so add that to the bulk. If you’re carrying that weight in a trunk, pannier or God forbid in a backpack, it’s going to kill you slowly. I purchased Ibera’s medium frame bag recently and not only does the whole kit and caboodle fit in the bag (snugly) but it creates a weight distribution that actually made for a much better ride than without it. The extra weight (probably an extra 8 pounds on a 26 pound bike) sits just slightly in front of the balance point and directly below the seat made the bike feel much more grounded while not feeling sluggish. I was able to push the bike much harder without affecting its line and I didn’t notice really any difference in the feel or overall responsiveness of the bike’s performance or overall weight. I’ll specify the MEDIUM size Ibera bag (which I’m also able to use with a sports bottle mounted under it and a bike pump mounted beside it) because the large bag will not only take up all of your frame space, but it will give the chain enough room to shift around as you ride, which you definitely do not want.

After days of looking at U-locks and measuring pro’s and con’s of different models, I finally landed on this chain and disc lock. It’s perfect for what it is. It’s versatile, it’s heavy duty, it’s simple. You’re not going to beat this thing with simple tools.

HOWEVER- do your research on Kryptonite’s ATPO program. I’m locking up a ~$500 bike on a suburban campus for evening classes. Kryptonite sells locks that are half the weight and 1/3 the hassle for $30-$40 less that rate 7/10, which means they qualify for a free year of ATPO (and $10 for an additional year) and will work with their frame mount. It sucks to have your bike stolen, but it also sucks to lug around 30% extra weight that you don’t have to because the value of your bike would be covered by a lighter duty lock in the event it was defeated.

    TL;DR
If you’re not locking up $2,500+ worth of equipment, consider a lighter duty lock because 7/10 still qualify for ATPO. The extra $30 you’re spending on their 9/10 and 10/10 locks literally buys 5 years of ATPO from them as long as you register in the first 30 days.

So, this lock and chain get 5 stars for form and performance, but 3 stars for value for money.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersThis is an excellent lock. But if you’re having trouble opening the lock and force the key, the key WILL break.
Kryptonite will refund your locksmith bill AND replace your lock – that’s why this review gets 5 stars instead of 4.

    Chain:
Pros: Huge, but not too long. Heavy, but not too heavy. Intimidating enough that it will hopefully turn away any sorry sops with bolt cutters before they even try. Jacketed in a sturdy sleeve to avoid the pinchy-pinchy finger effect. Also, this chain is just downright attractive.

Cons: Ok – so it’s a little heavier then what’s comfortable for a small or unfit person to move around, but if you bike a lot you’ve gotta be fit (haha not me), right? And it can be a little too short if you’re stuck locking up to a thick pole or column.

    Lock:
Pros: Good sturdy lock. Never had mine picked.
Cons: If you don’t listen to instructions and force the key, it WILL break, and it’s INCREDIBLY hard to fish out, if not impossible – depends on how the key breaks. If the key resists, stick a screwdriver or something in the lock to re-align the tumblers and try again. Once more, DO NOT force the key! It will break!

Whatever you do ...DON'T FORCE THE KEY! But if you do they'll replace it.

I purchased this lock even after having read a few negative reviews about the lock “seizing” up. After a few uses, I started to panic as my lock appeared to have the dreaded seize. The big reason it did not release? I had to apply pressure to the stem and the base for the third cylinder in the lock to turn. Just holding the lock together was all it took. No issues over the nearly daily use of it for the last month.

The lock has a wonderful noose in the chain allowing you to shorten the length of chain in use. I suspect this is specifically for preventing car jack lock breaks. I love it because I can get my bike snug to whatever I am attaching and it offers me more opportunities to use my Otto locks for my wheels.

As for weight, it is heavy, but I still carry it everyday in my backpack. I do have an ebike, so this may not be as much of an issue. Additionally, I tried three backpacks before I found one I could wear it comfortably with. I have an Arkterixs (sp?) Blade backpack that does the trick. Pro-tip: keep the backpack straps closer to your shoulders to prevent undue back/neck strain.

    Wonderful lock. I feel safe.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersUPDATE 26 May 2018: after complaining here and by email, the company moved much more quickly. They responded to my third complaint right away. I sawed off the broken lock, sent them a picture, and they rushed a replacement that arrived the next day. So, i upped my review to 4 stars. The new lock worked much more smoothly than the original ever did. Presumably, the original lock was defective from the start.

As an aside, it was a bit of an eye opener to actually cut through one of these locks. It only took about 40 seconds, I would estimate. However to be fair, I needed a power outlet, and I made a lot of noise to do it. I could, in principle, get around the former limitation with a cordless grinder, but it would still make a racket. If you are relying on this lock to be unbreakable, and the grinder noise would not attract attention, there is probably not much you can do to protect your bike. A thicker shank is probably safe from a bolt cutter, which is useful, since such an attack would be quiet. But really, the added time for cutting with a grinder is not all that significant.

    Here is my previous review:

I have used Kryptonite locks for.probably 35 years. Sadly, this is probably the last one I would ever buy. The keys suddenly started refusing to work. I periodically add chain lube to the lock, per their instructions, but that was not sufficient. After a few hundred attempts to free my bike, I gave up and tried to contact true company. They don’t answer the phone. They have a website form to fill out. But be careful, if you make a mistake it erases everything you painfully input into their little boxes. Nice. I finally got that to work, and they responded that they were too busy to get back to me for two weeks. Two weeks !

I guess I am supposed to quit my job and wait on the couch for them to get back to me. I cannot afford this nonsense. I will seek a refund and get a lock from Abus.

The chain itself is nice, so they earn a couple of stars.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThe real deal. The Noose is a brilliant concept. Gives me a lot of length to lock up what i need with relatively little weight. I LOVE IT! I see some more of these in my future. Believe it or not I use it to lock up my expensive baby stroller (CHARIOT COUGAR). It would take a thief 10x longer to cut the chain than just cut the stroller frame to steal it. But if they cut the stroller frame then the stroller is useless so why steal it? – right? Complete overkill. Put it pretty much ensures my stroller is still there when i return to it. Most importantly it only weighs 5 or 6 lbs and is compact. Best of all I avoid the violated feeling when i walk outside and my stroller is stolen – again. At least I know if they stole it they had to tear it up to steal it and didn’t get their crack money :).
Makes us all wonder why no-one came up with this “noose” concept before…..

I don’t know a whole lot about chains/locks as this is my first one, but this feels super heavy duty. Almost to the point of where it feels bulky and kind of hard to work with. At the same time, I wish it was just a tad longer. I haven’t come across a situation where the noose feature has been a viable option. I’m using it on a mountain bike and I don’t like that I can’t wrap it around a post without the lock dangling swinging around and hitting my frame. I bought it to tie my bike up at work so I usually end up leaving the chain tied to the rack in the parking garage instead of taking it with me. I wouldn’t be as happy with it if I had to secure it to my bike while traveling though. I’m grateful that I have piece of mind leaving it chained up at work, but I think a U-lock might have been a better option.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI did some research and this lock is the best choice for me. I love the noose aspect of the lock and its quality is top notch, also comes with a great warrantee. It’s about 7lbs, which is as high as you’d want to go for a lock that you commute with. Even at 7lbs, that can be heavy for some, especially if you have other cargo on your bike. I knew this when I bought it, so this is not an issue for me, I’m not small at 6’2″ and 230lbs. If I was a girl and half my weight I would not buy this lock for commuting, however, I would buy it as a lock for at home or to leave at work. I hope this helps people interested in this lock. Oh, one last thing, I find that the one key with the light, doesn’t light up for a long time. It sort of flickers, this might annoy people if it is a problem. It might just be my key. I don’t use it, because it’s bigger than the other two and I prefer a small key in my pockets.

Arrived today, so I haven’t actually tested it out yet. It’s pretty damn heavy, but that’s what you’d expect from a chain lock. I can’t imagine any thief trying to cut through that chain and the u-lock is so small that a leverage attach seems doomed to failure. I wish the u-lock was a little bigger so I could fit it around a wheel and frame, but I’ll probably just lock it to the back wheel and use the rear triangle trick ([…]). The u-lock bolts on both ends which is nice for security and for getting it on an off. The keys look well cut and like it would be a nightmare to try and pick the lock.

One of the keys comes with a little light, a nice feature except the connection is so shoddy that I can’t get the light to stay on. I took the housing off and double checked it wasn’t the batteries. I can get it to light up fine with the housing off, but as soon as I put it back together, nothing. Obviously not why I bought the lock, but it would be nice if everything worked out of the box.

Previously, I had gone the cheap route and purchased a Cocoweb ArmBar Bike U-Lock with LotusLock Bicycle Flex Cable Bike Lock Combo – SLABBK-SLLLBK60 . I locked 2 of my bikes up with these in a secure parking garage and 1 of them got stolen. I am guessing they did it pretty quickly and without power tools, as the area is next to the elevator and gets decent traffic.

I learned from this mistake, and read numerous bike lock reviews and determined this and Kryptonite New York Standard Bicycle U-Lock with Transit FlexFrame Bracket (4-Inch x 8-Inch) were the best options in my price range. I bought one of each and use them on my two bikes. I think they have deterred thieves so far, but I have kept them in a more secure area.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersMy experience with Kryptonite goes back to the period when one of their their original locks was found to be easily opened with a ballpoint pen. I had registered two of their motorcycle disc locks at that time and as soon as they changed the design they sent me two new replacement locks. Since then I have become older and moved from motorcycles to bicycles.

I previously submitted a review of the very excellent Saris Bike Porter 2-Bike Trunk Rack, which has design features that enable bikes to be securely locked to the rack and also allow the rack to be locked to the frame of my car, under the rear bumper. Kryptonite’s 2.25′ New York Noose is just the right length to lock the top tubes of two bikes to the beefy upper section of the Saris rack with their Evolution Series 4 Disc Lock, and their KryptoFlex 3/8″ x 7′ Double Loop Security Cable is perfect to go through the front wheels of both bikes and lock the bottom frame of the rack to the frame of my car with one of the replacement locks they sent me many years ago, which is similar to their current KryptoLok Series 2 Disc Lock. Both of these Kryptonite locks, and the chain and cable, work perfectly and I have never encountered any problems with them.

We don’t need this level of security for most of our bicycle outings, but when we head out for a vacation with our bikes that includes stays at multiple motels we always use our Kryptonite locks and chains.

One final note – Although I am sure no one else at Amazon would make this foolish mistake, when we left our B&B to head home from our last vacation I locked up the bikes and then left my cord with the keys to both locks draped over one of the handle bars while I checked the pressure on our car tires for the trip home. Of course I forgot about the keys and did not notice they were missing until we got home and tried to take our bikes off the rack. Luckily I was able to go into our house and get the spare keys that came with the locks. When I ordered replacements from Kryptonite they sent me new keys for both locks at no charge. Kryptonite provides excellent locks and they also provide excellent customer service!

Golden Review Award: 74 From Our UsersI live in manhattan and have to park my bike outside. The bike is worth about $800 and it’s about 2 months old. This morning when I went outside, the bike was twisted on its chain in a way that was clearly not just from NYers bumping into it. It looked like someone had tried to move it for easy access to the lock. When I unlocked it, I saw that someone had tried to saw through the steel U prong and made a flap of steel about an inch long and 1/2 inch deep. The lock held though! Yay lock! My previous bike was stolen so I feel some vindication.

Until last week I had been locking it with this lock plus a Fugggetaboutit U lock for extra protection, but I lost part of the Fuggetaboutit and am waiting for Amazon to SLOWLY send me a replacement.

This lock is still under warranty from Amazon since it’s so new, so I can get a new one, and I’ll get my new U lock soon – so hopefully I will continue to thwart them if they come back with bigger tools. I would say to anybody who is wondering though – I wouldn’t lock it with this lock alone, at least in a bad area. They definitely made headway. I was lucky they didn’t get all the way through the steel.

UPDATE: 6/22/13 – the lock is still doing great. Since the bike is outside it has had to deal with rain and snow, but other than needing to be oiled once, it’s been a champ! I am now using it with the Kryptonite U lock I mentioned above. As far as I can tell, nobody has even tried to tamper with it since the first failed effort.

Update 9/12/13 – I have to say, GREAT LOCK. Just needs oiling once in a while. Out in rain and all that. The noose is really nice, makes for less struggling to get the lock on the bike. Also, some of the posts in NYC are really fat and a typical ULock will not fit around them. The noose solves that problem also.

Unless you’re Superman though, you won’t carry this around. You pick your spot and leave it there (way too heavy, but that’s why it works).

7/14 The lock is still going strong. This winter broke records with snow. During one of the storms my bike was seat-high in snow. When spring came, I had to replace the bike chain, but not the lock!

Yeah I know other reviews said how heavy the lock was, but “heavy” is relative right? I figured it can’t be THAT heavy. And 7 pounds doesn’t really seem like it’s that much. But when I ride around on my 19 pound Trek it seems like I’m carrying around lead cannon balls! (It weighs over 1/3 as much as my entire bike!)

But I don’t carry it that often so overall I guess I can deal with it. I use it in conjunction with my performance bike U lock (one lock on each wheel plus frame) when I ride my bike to the store, and so I’m pretty confident that no one is going to steal my bike when these locks are attached.

One thing I do like about this lock is the “noose” feature, where you can use it to wrap around more distant or fat objects if you need to. If you’re going to do that, however, you need to make sure that the lock shackle itself will fit/lock around your bike frame.

No one has tried to steal my bike as far as I know so I guess I can’t really rate how good the lock/chain is. If I ever come outside and find my bike gone and this lock cut up then I’ll come back here and give it a one star!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is certainly one mega bike chain, its extremely thick and strong and would hopefully deter any burglars from taking the bike. It is however too heavy to have in your back pack whilst riding.

Golden Review Award: 184 From Our UsersThis is the chain to go with if you’ve ever had a theft attempt on your bike, or are smart enough to prevent it. My old chain was about halfway cut through when I found it and for some reason the thief didn’t finish the job. Not becuase they couldn’t, b/c the chain was barley still together. That’s when I said i paid too much for my bike to play this game. I have to step up and get a legit lock. “But damn” i said to myself, those heavy high end kryptonite locks weigh so much. Some of them 15 lbs, and that’s not feasible to ride around with all the time for me. Enter this model chain. This is the lightest, most well designed form of a heavy duty “maximum security” chain that kryptonite offers. First off, let’s just lay it out there. Yes, any chain can ultimately be cut through if the thief has enough balls and enough time to break them out in public. A freaking plasma cutter can melt steel and I suppose if you somehow rigged one up to ur truck and went out in the middle of the night, you could cut any lock thats physically made. However, short of that, the kryptonite new york “fuggetaboutit” level locks and these new york “series 4” are the highest protection you can buy. They are not made of steel but manganese, making them “almost” impossible to cut through. And you have to realize the mindset of the the theif: they are looking for a quick steal. They don’t want to sit down and set up shop in front of your bike trying to take it. So with that in mind, this is the highest level security you can get. It’s 11/12 on their security scale and offers the highest level of reimbursement they will pay: $3500 for your bike if the lock is cut.
Now enter the idea of it being a noose. One word: BRILLANT. This design esentially doubles the chainlength without doubling the weight, which is HUGE when these chains weigh as much as they do. This chain comes in at about 6 pounds, which is the highest reasonable weight I’ll carry on my bike. Infact I wrap this chain around the top tube when I’m using it and unless I’m jumping my bike around obstacles, I dont notice it’s there. Ok, so the noose design as you’d imagine turns this 2.25′ (not 2.5′ like the title says, not sure why they advertise that) and essentially gives you as much chain length from your bike to bike rack as a 4 foot chain would. A regular 4′ chain would have to wrap in a circle and you’d connect both ends, so your bike could only really be 2′ away from the rack. This chain ALSO gives you 2′ between you and the rack with you looping or “noosing” it around the rack, thread it through ur back tire (always) and lock the chain to your seat tube or down tube. See the pic I uploaded. In the end, this chain gives me the best of both worlds. Lighter weight closer to the weaker locks, but the high security and difficulty cutting of the new york locks. Highly recommended and would absolutely buy the noose design again.

Lightest chain that still tell theives to f off

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersOverall impression:
Purchased this chain lock to replace a defective 4 foot version. I use it in a moderate to high crime area and feel safe locking my bike up with this lock. It is a solid lock and would take some effort to get it off. My only complaint is that it can be a little too short at times. If you navigate your bike properly and get it close to the pole then you’re probably fine. If you have a bike rack set up where you cannot get your frame close to the rack I might suggest looking into other locks.

    Noose function:
With a chain this short the “noose” link rarely seems useful. I almost wish I bought the 3 foot chain without the noose link. By the time you wrap your bike and insert the last of the chain through the noose link theres not much slack left and you’re better off just joining the two ends with the lock. However, if your bike frame is narrow it can work to use the noose around a pole and then snake the chain through a tire and put the u-lock around your frame and the last link of the chain. It may look like your bike isn’t properly secured, but its not going anywhere.

    Bottom line:
Lock works great and is very secure. I use it everyday in combination with a full size u-lock for a relatively quick and flexible lock solution. It can be heavy at times and a little too short for some bike setups so make sure you measure first to see if the chain will be long enough.
