Very useful to keep in the box. Only needed it once so far but it’s much better than the alternatives (Imo) it’s easy to use and it’ll last ages. Very pleased with my purchase.
Great little tool for marking a drilling point. Just turn the dial from the locking position, place tip of marker on the hole you want to mark and press the end, which squirts a dot of green marker through the hole and onto the surface – so you know exactly where to drill.
One of those gadgets you never knew you needed but one you have it, you’ll use it frequently. No more blunt pencils.
I am really impressed with the Marxman. This pen is truly a game changer for marking holes through objects. The “ink” is non-permanent and easily erasable, making it perfect for marking on a variety of surfaces, including wood, metal, and plastic. I also appreciate that the “ink” is vibrant and easy to see, making it easy to locate my marks. It has made my DIY projects much easier and more accurate. I highly recommend this product to anyone in need of a reliable and versatile marking tool. 5 stars!
I had seen these online and have found it really useful since I took delivery. The bright colour is easy to see and it can be easily used one-handed which is handy whilst you are holding something in place. It has a lock so that it won’t be inadvertently used in a tool kit, pocket or wherever else you store it.
The spot it makes is consistent and if you need to use it repeatedly it only needs a little shake between sprays. I would highly recommend this product.
Sometimes in life a gadget comes along that is so simple and effective you kick yourself for not thinking it yourself.
Well this is it and its truly amazing. No more trying to find a long thin screwdriver or sharpening a pencil with a blade in order to make it fit the tiny guide hole no no no! One pump of this and you’re done. Works on pretty much every surface ive tried and its so clear it makes the job easy.
Amazing product.
I use this regularly at work and home , an excellent tool for marking walls etc . Very easy to use and the resultant marks stand out well on many different wall surfaces.
Obviously this solves a very specific problem but it does it well and is easy to use. Sometimes it requires a few squirts but once you get into the habit of doing that anyway it doesn’t matter. Works very well
This is up there with the wheel, fire and the internet in terms of genius inventions. If you’ve ever had to drill a hole in anything, ever, you need this product.
I will always have one in my tool box. Taking this off me would be like taking Hendrixs’ guitar off him. Excerpt it’s not a guitar and Hendrix is dead. But it’s almost EXACTLY the same.
This helped me mount a hose reel in an awkward place but has gone on to be a go to DIY tool it’s really great value and does exactly what it says on the tin once you work out how to open it 😉
Great for marking brickwork or other hard surfaces
You just ‘puff’ the device through the hole drilled in your wood, bracket, etc. and it makes a clear little mark on the surface beneath! Easier than a bradawl on those harder surfaces.
My sister bought me one a little gift for Christmas 2020; I bought myself a replacement this December.
Excellent inexpensive time saver and pretty foolproof.
Bought this for my husband over a year ago. He was lost when it finally ran out.
You know when you need to mark where to drill a hole in a wall but your pencil won’t reach the wall through the hole – this tool fires a small green chalk mark to show you where to drill. It’s brilliant.
Very simple and clever marker for anyone who fits equipment to walls. Instead of trying to mark through onto the wall with a pencil, simply insert the Marksman into the hole and press. It fires out a green mark , even if the equipment being fitted is fairly thick. Remove the equipment and the “holes” will be clearly marked in green. Quick and easy.
I’ve been using the Marxman for a few years now, one use was enough to convert me immediately. The problem of how to accurately mark holes for drilling has been solved completely. It sprays a bright green puff of chalk through whatever is about to be secured to a wall marking where to drill perfectly. It’s a brilliant tool and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Why has nobody thought of this before? It answers a niggling problem that has always beset anyone marking a drilling position through thick material. It’s not very ecologically friendly in its current form, and expensive to use if you have a lot of fixings to do, but by heck, it works very well and saves a lot of frustration. Well done to whoever thought up this solution.
i love this thing. its so simple and it has worked for me every time. its not always difficult to mark with a pencil but doing so requires a little bit of concentration and there is always the possibility of the thing your holding up against the wall slipping while you do it. with this thing you only need to offer it to the hole and push. if you need to rub the mark out it wipes away very easily. because it ejects the paint you dont need to worry about the tip of the pencil reaching through whatever you are marking through or indeed breaking the tip of the pencil on the first hole and having to start again. good product, recommended especially for the occasional DIY’er who really doesn’t need fiddly product to go along with a less than professional skill base.
Bit of a game-changer.
People having problems with them are either using them wrong or got a duff one.
Line up the thing – one quick burst (some pictures here make it look like they’ve held it down for ages. Really should just be one ‘splut’.) – perfect markings without mucking about.
Green one gets through most ‘normal’ battens etc. Been using it for CLS of assorted sizes & all good.
They are quite expensive for what they are, but I’ve a feeling when mine dies (doing well for many holes so far), I’ll immediately get another.
Or get another after swearing at returning to trad marking methods…
I was recently replacing a CCTV camera, and had bought Marxman a while ago. I’ve used it for quite a few DIY projects and I’m really happy that I found it. I learnt about it when I was watching a Dragon’s Den recap show. I’ve always struggled when using markers or pencils to record where I need to drill. I’ll either make rubbish marks on walls or get confused about where I’ve actually put them as i’ll be marking in grey.
The fact that the paint in Marxman is green means that I can see it very easily. When I was changing out an old wall mounted camera for a new one I just wanted to get in and get done. In all it took me 19 minutes to get up, and swap out the camera for the new one and I had no issue with marking or drilling holes. This is a really handy tool and like I said, I’ve had it for a while so it does last long for your casual DIY ‘enthusiast’.
I was surprised how well this marked. It shot straight through 4 inch concrete post holes to mark the timber clamped on to it. While the mark is a bit diffuse and not absolutly accurate it does mark where holes need to be. I allowed some give in the holes to allow for final positioning when tightening bolts.
I would expect smaller holes that are less deep to render a more accurate mark. Worth keeping in the toolbox.
Update after further purchase…
Forget the bad reviews, how can this marker leave a bigger mark than the hole it is being shot through?
Push (or clamp) the item with the holes against whatever you are attaching it to and shoot a blast of chalk in each hole. I sometimes do 2 shots to be sure. You will get a mark the size of the hole. What could be simpler? I now keep 2 (normal and deep) in my pencil drawer. This is my go to marker for matching holes for battens, posts etc. Yes, it’s expensive, but it saves time and has been accurate for me, so saves on mistakes too.
What can I possibly say about this remarkable device?
Well, for years I have followed the traditional route when fitting shelves or attaching battens to walls. You drill a hole, offer the batten to the wall and ensure it is level and then you fiddle with an old screw pushed through the hole or a pencil with a very long and fragile lead hoping it won’t snap before leaving its vital mark.
It’s all the more frustrating when, after marking any number of points you remove the batten only to discover most of them are invisible due to the wall surface which in the case of pebbledash resists almost all attempts to leave a clear and accurate mark for subsequent drilling.
Then I discovered the Marxman Marx!
Having drilled your holes in the batten and ensured it is in the correct position on the wall you just offer the conical tip of the marxman to the hole and, rather like an inhaler in principle, you give a little extra press. You do this for each and every hole and, when the batten is removed you see a series of accurately placed fluorescent green dots precisely aligned with the holes in your batten. You just drill on the green spot!
It works equally well with ready made items such as shelf brackets or timber up to about 50mm. Thicker timbers can use the big brother version designed to cope with 100mm – and it does.
I rate this little invention as being right up there with the likes of the Dyson which looked at an established method of doing something and came up with a better solution.
No more stripping a biro so you can poke the nib down the hole. No more wierd trimming of pencils or peering at a wall like a mad person looking for tiny clues. The Marksman Marx really works and it is a brilliantly simple solution to an annoyingly common problem.
You can see the original pitch on Dragons Den online and it’s well worth a look. Personally, I think it is something everyone should have in their toolkit and I guarantee you will always find one in mine.
