Tips for working with Meguiar’s Scratch X
- Always work on a cool surface and in the shade.
- Always apply a small amount, evenly to prevent streaking and smearing.
- Work a small amount of ScratchX into the paint using moderate pressure and a soft foam applicator like Meguiar’s Microfibre Applicator Pads. Work in a 1-2 square foot area in a circular pattern, making 4-6 overlapping passes per section. Wipe the residue off as soon as you finishing working the area with a clean premium microfiber towel like Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfibre Towels. Flip your towel to a clean side for a final wipe.
- Work ScratchX in with slight friction as this is needed to activate the micro-abrasive and remove defects. If it’s just simply wiped on and wiped off like a wax, it won’t work to remove the defect.
- For deeper scratches you may need to repeat the process.

A great product that does exactly what it says on the tin however don’t expect it to remove really deep scratches that’s not what it’s for but it makes lightweight of light swirls and scratches- fantastic!
Product arrived in a big brown envelope but was completely crushed inside the polish was inside envelope where the plastic container was crushed and split put straight in the bi
I had the last Maguires without the wax.
An was great never a problem as always.
Same with the one with wax. A high visible clean.
No scratches at all. Really good shine. Looks like new.
You’ve done it again Maguires. Keep up the great work.
I’d defo recommend peeps.
I liked the product because I could not see the scratch on my car unless I literally scrutinise the area where I applied the product. The scratch is undetectable by casually looking at the area where the product was applied. I used the product to cover scratches on my car.
I had one big scuff and it works, you just need the effect and preacher to clean it. It’s better to use drill pads that only you can put force.
I have applied on the minor scratch it didn’t work.
I’ll recommend this only for scuffs not for scratches.
I don’t often write reviews but I felt compelled to give this product a huge thumbs up. I was trying to clean a tiny mark off a new motorcycle tank but ended up making it worse by leaving swirling in the paint. A quick and light going over the area with this product totally removed the swirls and the original mark. Love it!
I used this on both the screen of my bike computer and my digital watch. In both cases I applied it with the recommended microfibre cloth. It worked perfectly. My bike computer screen was so badly scuffed I was looking at having to replace it. It did a great job. Same with my watch.
I was using that on side doors of my car. Removed the paint and light scratches are not visible anymore . Totally worth it.
Does the job wasn’t happy with the labelling on the bottle looks cheap from meguiars
I foolishly created light swirl scratching trying to remove some bird poo and bought this as a solution seeing as the swirls were minimal. It worked perfectly without much effort and I applied it with a soft Meguiar pad that came as a two pack for less than 5. Wiped it clean and was delighted with the result. It 100% works on light swirling scratches so you can buy with confidence.
Works well for minor scratches doesn’t need much work just follow the instructions and you will see the result though it’s not magic deep scratches needs a paint job
I drive luxury cars for a living. I would not be without this Meguiar’s product (amongst others)
My cars are black and require constant attention due to the mileage covered. To date I have found nothing better!
Purchased this to get rid of some minor surface scratches in car paintwork. Applied using a polishing pad, buffed its up and vast majority of the minor marks are gone, leaving a good glossy shine finish.
Not particularly cheap but it is from a well known and established valeting brand so I guess you get what you pay for.
Overall, impressed with it’s performance and will buy again when it runs out.
It gets rid of shallow scuffs and scratches which have only penetrated the clear coat layer. Apply two pea sized amounts on a microfibre cloth and rub in a circular motion for a couple of minutes, for most scratches around the car, you will be seriously impressed. Just make sure to clean the area with soap and water before hand to remove contaminants. I removed a bunch of scratch marks from around the door handles and roof. However if you have deeper cuts into the paint where you can see the base coat and can easily feel it with your nail, this will not work. It will may it less noticeable but will not repair those deeper cuts, for that you will need to sand the area, paint and coat it. Or if it’s a small deep scratch, you can use those touch up pens and then use this stuff to polish the area up once dry.
I’m not shy about buying car products, I’ve got a garage full however a previous attempt at this headlight with another well known polish dud nothing. I was reluctant to get the wet and dry out and saw another review on her (silver golf owner – thankyou). Took me very little time with a soft sponge bit on my drill, perfect result. I also tried it on quite a deep scratch, it improved it, made it less obvious but it will need a touch of paint and clear. Great bit of kit this, by far the best in my comprehensive collection for scratches. The wife does love it when I buy more kit 😉
This does work on thin whispy scratches on my motorbikes tank and plastic bits. I have noticed a week later that the fine scratches are returning after washing the bikes tank. I had about twenty swirly marks on the tank, and now only maybe one is slightly visible. I gives a lovely gloss . I used one micro fibre cloth to apply the stuff, you don’t need a lot, I let it stand for a minute or so then used a new cloth to wipe off in a circular motion, and also across the scratches. Buffed up lovely, I wasn’t expecting it to do much, but it has made the tank look really glossy and it’s hard to find the small thin scratches that were there. Recommended apart from the fact that you may have to repeat the job every few weeks.
Such a great product!
I didn’t use the included drill buffer thing and just used the included cloth.
I used this on a clean surface and was completely shocked that it actually worked, it didn’t work on the deeper scratches or ones that you could see the primer but all the other marks/minor scratches it got them out.
The photo I included was of a mark on the front of my car, looked like left over duck tape or something like that, it’s been on the car for over 2 years and couldn’t get rid of it, tried polishing it out many times but to no avail but I used this product and it went after 2 medium pressure attempts. Was completely amazed that it has completely gone.
Watch afew youtube videos on how to apply it by hand but it’s very easy to use.
This product worked surprisingly well on scuffs and fine scratches from the car being scraped by bushes/hedgerows down the passenger side of the car. It also did a half decent job of diminishing deeper scratches but it won’t remove them (as expected). Included bottle of compound was a bit measly in size but I mainly bought this as a kit because I wanted a good quality buffing head for my drill that wouldn’t fall apart after 2 mins of use – and I’m pleased to say it didn’t. Recommended so long as you keep your expectations in check.
It’s a really good compound for removing light scrapes and scratches and has been especially useful for us as 2 weeks before the lease on our car was due to end somebody scraped the rear drivers wheel arch…(I was not happy to be polite!)
Using Meguiar’s compound ans the enclose accessories certainly help hide 99.9% of the damage , enough that when the car was collected it got us a brilliant rebate …more than paid for itself. I think it’s way better than the old tried and tested T-Cut these days because of modern paints and lacquers used on car bodies like ours was, having had pearlescent gray over silver.
So, I’ve started parking my car on a tree-lined residential street. Subsequently and inevitably my whip get covered in bird poo. Not talking sparrows and finches, I mean pigeons… and not talking ratty inner city pigeons either, I mean meaty wood pigeons. Personally I think they plot and target my car. Thinking I was doing my car good, I though I’d use a tissue and the dregs of my water bottle to wipe off the aforementioned poo. But the poo was course and, to the amusement of the overhead pigeons I scratch my own car. Having a grey car, neither silver nor black I couldn’t find the right scratch remover from Meguiar’s competitor. So was sold when I saw a grey mazda just like mine on the box! Yay! It hasn’t removed the scratch(es) completely but has made them hardly noticeable, which is a win I suppose. I’m reluctant to go over the affected area again as I don’t know what it’s doing to the paints lacquer, but on first inspection, it looks alright. Also, I don’t know if the diet of an inner city pigeon would be worse and therefore have more corrosive poo? Point of the story, wipe bird poo off as soon as you can! But if you do scratch your own car with Buxton spring and kleenex, this is a decent enough produc
I bought this thinking a few quick polishes and it would be gone. I had a scuff mark on my side mirror. Car only four months old. I could feel the slight scuff when I run my finger nail across so not good. After a few polishes the slight marks hid disappeared. I was left with two of the deeper ridges. I per persevered and kept going into the garage and giving it another go as I could see the marks getting fainter. I did this over the course of a day and now the marks are gone. Not easy and I applied plenty of pressure on the cloth. Even with the pressure it did not change colour of paint. In the end very happy and would recommend with a lot of elbow grease.
I’m someone who takes good care of my car and I have a certain amount of pride in the way it looks. It has a regular bath each week and a quick detail with a Meguiars product and a regular coat of Meguiars wax each month. I park away from other cars in any carpark I use in order to avoid the dreaded door dings inflicted on cars by the numb nuts who don’t care about their vehicle or anyone else’s. You can imagine how I felt when I saw a line down my driver’s door and back passenger door. My car is dark grey metallic and the lines really showed up. They weren’t particularly deep (likely caused by someone’s coat zip as they brushed past my car), so I tried several polishes i had at hand and it seemed like I got rid of most of the damage. That is, until it rained. Then the lines reappeared. I checked out what the reviews said about scratch removers and decided to put my trust in my favourite brand, Meguiars. What a revelation. One passover saw most of the damage disapear and the second application was job done. No more visible scratch marks. The car has been rained on, washed and detailed many times since and the scratches have never reappeared. This is a product that I now wouldn’t be without, even though I hope never to use it again in the foreseeable. If this resonates with you and you need to remove a scratch, then don’t hesitate to purchase this little bottle of happiness restorer!
First of all, be aware that this is neither a polish or a compound. This is super fine grade micro-abrasive that stands in between a compound. I have been using it for polishing the car from scratches, to restore headlights and to finally restore a new clear coat.
For the best result, and safe time and effort, get yourself a polishing sponge kit for drill (mine is the 5″ for 15 pounds and it totally worth that money).
1st job: after I “super cleaned” my car (no-touch wash, touch wash, clay bar, and another touch was) I wanted to try it and I literally went through the entire car. The result was quite spectacular, no more swirls and minor scratches were gone! Careful, scratches that you can catch your finger nail in are impossible to remove without wet sanding.
2nd job: the headlight were quite opaque and I wanted to try the “scratch remover” without wet sanding. I could not believe the result, it was amazing! (see pictures). The headlight seemed almost new with so little effort, again thanks to the polishing sponge for drill.
3rd job: I restored the second headlight but I wanted to sand it down first, then applied a lacquer to protect the plastic and wet sand it with a 2000. When dry I used the product with the drill and everything super shiny again.
4th job: I restored a couple of dents on the car, painted and applied a clear coat (or lacquer). The final result was not brilliant so I wet sanded with a 3000 and then a 5000. The paint was obviously opaque so I applied the product and BOOM, again shining like new paint.
5th job: I found a nasty scratch that “scrack remover” could not deal with (I could feel the scratch with my nail). I carefully wet sanded with 5000 until it disappeared and then used the magic liquid to make the clear coat shining again.
After this 4 jobs (and using the product on the whole Golf, as it was in a quite bad state) I still have 1/4 of product left, which means that I have plenty for many more isolated works for the future.
Finally, I have to say that I am NOT a professional. It was actually my first time using this kind of product and I bought it thanks to a YouTube recommendation (KrisFix).
My original review (after 2 days):
=================================
We recently found a 5mm-wide shallow scratch along the entire length of our 2 year old metallic black Vauxhall Zafira. It was not particularly deep, so I assumed that it was not a deliberate ‘keying’ scratch, but I can only guess it was from rubbing next to a bush/twig/branch at some point. Anyway, searching the internet there seem to be lots of different products, all of which seem to have variable reviews and seem to be good at some types of scratches but not all.
Well I cannot promise you that it will work on *your* scratch/car/paint but I can say that on *my* metallic black Vauxhall paint it worked *brilliantly*. The scratch was easy to see in any light, at any angle. Now you have to really catch the angle correctly and look very hard to see the original scratch. Sure, it does not make the paintwork perfect (showroom condition) but you certainly have to look hard to find the scratches afterwards.
I also tried it on a number of much smaller/thinner (but *deeper*?) “cracks” (not scratches) but I have to say that I could not really see any improvement afterwards. To be fair, these cracks were almost invisible beforehand (I just tried the product as an experiment).
So in summary, it won’t help with *all* scratches, but for the wide/shallow one that I had it worked an absolute treat, and I’m delighted!
Hopefully others have a good experience too if they choose to give it a go.
10 days later:
==============
Hmmm, well I have to update my review because I need to warn people about the long-term effect that I noticed yesterday. In certain lights, and certain angles, the area which was buffed now has a very slight ‘smeared’ finish to the paintwork. It’s not terrible, but it certainly can be seen in certain lights/angles. Having said this, my bad scratch still looks MUCH better, but I need to warn you that it does not leave the paintwork perfect.
My advice is:
* Only use this product on medium scratches
** Don’t use on light scratches which you can hardly see, because the after-effect of the smear is probably worse than the light scratch
** Don’t use on deep scratches/cracks, because the product won’t work and the after-effect of the smear will be noticeable from some angles
* Try to use the product sparingly
** Only treat the scratch itself – try to apply thinly, and buff it in in a thin strip (don’t make the strip too wide, or you’ll possibly end up drawing more attention to the repair than the original scratch!
Good luck, whatever you choose to do…
