FAQ
- Q: How to set up the detector to make it ready to detect?
- A: Turn on and wait for 30 seconds to warm up. Please keep in mind that the warm-up process should be performed in a known ‘clean’ environment to achieve accurate results.
- Q: How can I tell what sensitivity the detector is currently at?
- A: When the S button light is on, the detector is in high sensitivity mode; when the S button light is off, the detector is in low sensitivity mode.
- Q: Does the alarm continue until the situation is resolved?
- A: Yes, the alarm will continue to sound until the combustible gas concentration is below 5% of the lower explosive limit.
- Q: How close does the detector need to be to detect leaking gas from a natural gas pipeline?
- A: Generally 1-5cm, depending on the severity and concentration of the gas leak.
- Q: Can the sensors be replaced?
- A: We do not sell sensors separately. If you find that the sensor is no longer working within three years from the date of purchase, please get in touch with us.
- Q: What is the difference between a gas monitor and a gas leak detector?
- A: Gas monitors are used for continuous gas leak monitoring to monitor the air state in a large space, but they are unable to pinpoint the exact leak point. The gas leak detector is used to locate the source of the gas leak.
- Q: Why doesn’t the screen light up/can’t be turned on?
- A: The first thing to check is whether the battery is installed correctly (make sure the electrodes are oriented correctly). Next, please check whether the battery voltage is sufficient, and replace two new batteries to see if the detector works properly. If the problem persists, please get in touch with us to apply for exchange service.

It identified a gas leak that meant it could be immediately dealt with. Lifesaver of a product.
Easy to use gas detector pen. Haven’t needed to use it yet but it seems pretty well made and good quality.
great little tool saved a lot of time finding the leak
As a new home owner, i want to try and be safe and look after my family so I recently bought the TopTes PT177 Gas Leak Detector, and I couldn’t be happier with my purchase. This natural gas detector is incredibly easy to use, making it a great choice for anyone who wants to ensure their home is safe from potential gas leaks.
The audible and visual alarm is a great feature – if the detector detects a gas leak, it will sound an alarm and flash a bright light, alerting you to the danger. This is especially important if you’re not at home when a gas leak occurs, as it gives you an early warning and allows you to take action before things get too dangerous.
The detector is also portable and easy to carry around, so you can use it in different areas of your home or take it with you when you travel. The battery life is impressive as well – I haven’t had to replace the batteries yet, even after using the detector for several weeks.
Overall, I would highly recommend the TopTes PT177 Gas Leak Detector to anyone who wants to ensure their home is safe from potential gas leaks. It’s easy to use, and portable, and the audible and visual alarm is a great feature that gives you peace of mind. Five stars all the way!
Pleased with this, works as it should do and at a decent price (20) for peace of mind.
Brilliant product. Bought as I could smell gas in hall, no one else could. This little gas detector proved me right gas leak on meter. I would recommend everyone to have one in their homes.
This is a super useful device which can be very handy to detect gas leaks.
The device is small and easily portable. It comes with instructions that are easy to understand and it is very easy to use. It comes with batteries and since this is not something you need to use everyday, they would easily last a long time.
You can adjust the sensitivity of the device and it is is certainly fit for purpose to help detect any gas in a very user friendly way.
The PT177 Gas Leak Detector by TopTes is an excellent tool for anyone concerned about gas leaks in their home. The detector is easy to use, with a simple one-button operation that activates both audible and visual alarms when gas is detected. The detector is portable and can easily be taken around your home to locate any combustible gas leak sources like methane or propane. The device comes with two batteries included, making it ready to use straight out of the box.
The detector is very sensitive and can quickly pick up even the smallest of gas leaks, giving you peace of mind knowing that your home is safe. The device is also very sturdy and durable, with a bright red design that makes it easy to spot in an emergency. The included handle strap adds to the portability of the device, making it easy to carry around your home.
Overall, the PT177 Gas Leak Detector by TopTes is an excellent product that provides an affordable and effective solution to keep your home safe from gas leaks. Its ease of use, portability, and sensitivity make it a great addition to any household.
A handy bit of kit at a very reasonable price. This gas sniffer leak detector works very well Iv tested it around my gas bottles and gas pipes for leaks on the caravan and found no leaks thankfully. My advice is if you ever smell gas open all doors and windows and call in a gas engineer it’s not worth investigating yourself. The leak detector comes with a carry pouch two batteries and the user manual, Its simple to use very straightforward all set out in the user manual it will find leaks but for peace of mind and your own safety call a gas engineer if you ever smell gas.
Can’t say too much about this other than it works. It is pretty straightforward to setup and use. Tested it as per the instructions, which were very simple and it indicated that it works. I will be using this at least every month or so to ensure that the stove is working as it should. At the moment my landlord has regular chaecks but it is always great for the in between and for peace of mind as well.
Must have device! Easy to use, small size makes it as portable as a pen. Tested accuracy with my IECEx gas detector, and was accurate enough, even at very low ppms.
The TOPTES PT177 Combustible Gas Detector came very well protected in a striking bright orange and black cardboard box with white print. Inside the box there was a made to measure moulded plastic insert, in which the PT177 fitted perfectly. Also, 2 x Duracell AAA batteries were contained in a separate part of the plastic insert. Very comprehensive instructions, in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, were enclosed as well.
The instructions are so easy to follow, that setting up and testing the PT177 took me hardly any time at all. It was just a matter of undoing the battery compartment’s cap, installing the 2 x Duracell AAA batteries with the correct polarity as illustrated in the instructions, replacing the cap.
Then, in an area where combustible gas is known not to be present, press the power button for more than one second, and the Detector will beep and start a 30 second zero-calibration process while the indicator lights flash in cycles. When the process has been completed, the indicator lights turn off, and the power button light stays on. The Detector defaults to high-sensitivity mode, and the sensitivity button lights up.
The next stage is to test the effectiveness of the Detector. I did this by turning on one of the burners on my gas hob, without letting it ignite, and the Detector reacted immediately, beeping continuously, and all its concentration indicators lit up red.
There is a low-sensitivity mode option, which can be entered by pressing the Detector’s sensitivity button, but I prefer to keep to the high-sensitivity default mode. The Detector will turn off automatically after 5 minutes of inactivity, but there is also the option of turning it off manually by pressing the power button for more than one second.
In the media there have been reports of several gas explosions in homes, including one very recently in a town not very far from where I live. The property was totally destroyed, several nearby homes had to be evacuated, and, unfortunately, there was one fatality.
IMO this TOPTES PT177 Combustible Gas Detector is a brilliant product, and every home with a gas supply should have one. My motto, should I suspect that there might be a gas leak in my home is:
IF IN DOUBT, GET THE PT177 OUT!
Can’t really comment on accuracy as who knows if it’s working right unless you got a gas leak aha. But lightweight and comes with the batteries and a pouch. Easy to use to
This is a valuable tool to have in the home to help detect and pinpoint a gas leak, and help prevent any catastrophic accidents, or even just for peace of mind.
To test this I released a small amount of gas out of a lighter to see how it would react when detecting a gas leak. (Shown on my video recording).
My personal circumstances for ordering this detection tool is, after multiple requests to my landlord about a ongoing problem with the gas boiler which was worrying me, I have still the same gas boiler which I’ve had for the past 24 years in this property.
I have an annual gas safety inspection, and mention everytime the pilot light fails to ignite on multiple attempts, raring up, clicking then stop.
This can exceed 30 attempts and a good 20 minutes before it finally ignites but the engineers just shrug, the landlords won’t change this boiler even though its that old it’s now obsolete and said if any replacement parts are needed, it can take 7-10 working days from ordering to delivery.
Now… I’m not in anyway paranoid! but when you start to feellethargic in the early evening, or get a banging headache and so does your partner too, you can’t help think ‘Is it that old rotten boiler?’ ‘Is it leaking?’
When these kind of situations arise and you have no answers, it can be worrying.
I feel more reassured now I have this detector.
It has a visual marker and a sounding alarm on detection.
Batteries are included in the pack, and are supplied using a well known, leading and trusted brand.
That in itself tells you a lot about the detail and quality of products that this company offer, even when supplying the batteries to use in their product, they choose a reliable and reputable brand.
Also offering a 3 year guarantee with product lifetime sales aftercare is an impressive offer, that satisfies me this brand produce quality products with a genuine interest for their customers.
Handy little tool with affordable piece, detected the gas leak in my kitchen, for this price you don’t expect for professional standard but already good enough for our new kitchen project!
Simple to use. The instructions must however be followed and understood. For example it’s important to switch on in clean air otherwise the device will not recognise the presence of flammable gas at that concentration.
This device does not make you CORGI registered. It’s not ‘intrinsically safe’ and therefore cannot be used in a coal mine. It does work. It is a high quality product in my opinion.
It indicates the presence of gas with; coloured ‘segments (in a line) and audibly. The concentration of the gas is indicated by; the measurement range being used, number of segments lit, their colour and frequency of the audible alarm. It’s unequivocal. To be honest I don’t think the audible alarm is very loud but for a hand held device I think it’s loud enough to get the users attention.
The batteries supplied whilst they’re OEM (original equipment manufacturer) are, nevertheless Duracell, Alkaline.
We have gas appliances in our home and it is a good idea to have some means of ‘just checking’ there’s no leaks AFTER the properly qualified person has done work on your installation (including the yearly gas inspection). Some years ago whilst living in a student house some of the girls kept saying they smelt gas. The landlord had had his ‘engineer’ do some work on a gas fire previously. The house had been flats and the girl in the room which had the meter through which the supply came, didn’t tell anyone she was continually putting the coin in the meter (there was no box as we had a ‘bill’ for the whole house), presumably because she felt guilty as she thought her excessive use of her fire was doing it. Thankfully the gas leak was reported to the authorities and found by a properly qualified and competent person before a tragedy occurred. The landlord’s ‘mate’ had failed to tighten the coupling on the fire in a different room. I witnessed the manometer fall like a stone when the proper gas engineer tested the system the night the leak was reported.
Anyone with a Calor gas appliance such as; a camping cooker, boiling ring, patio heater or room heater has a good reason to keep one of these to hand.
I like this and value it like the carbon monoxide detectors (I have more than one of these).
I hope these opinions and observations are helpful.
At time of review you can get one of these for around 20
First thing to be aware of is that this comes with some standard two ‘Duracell’ AAA batteries that you need to use it.
I mention this first because this device will not work with rechargeable batteries, maybe because they are 1.2v, it needs normal batteries that are 1.5v.
The video shows it working from start up, I know it is 30 seconds of flashing lights but when you start this device up that’s what it does, it takes 30 seconds before you can use it.
In the video I press the gas button on a lighter to show it alerting, it’s clear l, you wouldn’t miss it.
In 2023 I would expect this to have a rechargeable battery like electricity sensors but I didn’t dock any stars for this, there would always be people who don’t like rechargeable things and like to just stick some fresh batteries in..
I hope you find the video and this review helpful
This detector did well in my test of a simulated natural gas leak (- See video) I blew out a burner on the hob and gas then ‘leaked’ for a few seconds before the hob safety system shut it down.
I waited a few seconds then approached the burner with the detector which responded after a few seconds in the leak area ( so looking for a small leak will be a process requiring moving fairly slowly/steadily from area to area but that seems common with most such detectors )
The warning sound and gas concentratio0n bar graph all worked fine.
Does the job nicely
This is a great little accessory to have around the home or have with you when you go stay in places. You need to calibrate it when you first get it so that it knows what it is detecting, this isn’t too tricky and once you have set it up, you are good to go!
Simple and effective, great gadget that could save lives.
Fast delivery, very well packaged in its own box with instruction manual.
This Gas Detector is an essential tool for any homeowner looking to ensure the safety of their family and property. The device is designed to detect the presence of natural gas and other combustible gases in the air, alerting you with both audible and visual alarms.
It is easy to use and comes with two AA batteries for immediate use. The device has a simple one-button operation and can be used to detect natural gas, propane, methane, and other combustible gases. The detector has a wide detection range of up to 50 feet and can detect gas leaks quickly and accurately.
It has a compact and lightweight design, making it easy to carry and use in different areas of your home. The device also features a flexible gooseneck probe that allows you to reach tight spaces and detect gas leaks in hard-to-reach areas.
One of the best features is its ability to provide both audible and visual alarms. The device emits a loud 85dB alarm and flashes a bright red LED light when gas is detected. This dual alarm system ensures that you will be alerted to a gas leak even if you are in a noisy or dark environment.
Overall, it is a reliable and essential tool for any homeowner concerned about gas leaks. The device is easy to use, lightweight, and comes with a flexible gooseneck probe for detecting leaks in hard-to-reach areas. The dual alarm system provides both audible and visual alerts, ensuring you will be notified immediately in the event of a gas leak.
This is a gas testing device and not a alarm gas detector. It is used when having any suspicious gas leaks especially in hidden spaces and that’s why its shape it’s a pencil shape.Very efficient and with a instant reaction showing even the level of monoxides. Not a professional tool but a recommended little sniffer that should be a must in every house.
I have seen gas boiler engineers use similar detectors. It is nice to be able to have one of these in case you suspect a gas leak. Even so, you still would always want to contact the energy company for a suspected issue. This detector comes with its own batteries. It detects other gases besides natural gas. When you turn it on, you need to have it somewhere where there is fresh air. It needs to calibrate itself each time it is turned on. Takes about 30 seconds as per the instructions. While it is calibrating, the lights flash to let you know it is still calibrating. When they stop flashing and one light remains green and beeps, it is ready for use. I have a small propane torch that I cracked open just a hair to allow a tiny bit of gas to escape. As I brought the device close to the gas, it performed as expected and lights flash and beeping sounds to indicate the presence of gas. There is a “sensitive” button that you can turn on to make the device even more sensitive to the presence of gas, helpful to detect smaller leaks. The series of lights light up in sequence to show you the strength of the gas being detected to allow you to better pinpoint the source of a leak, also with a series of beeps. I also tested this by breathing on it and it does beep then as well, so apparently it seems to detect carbon dioxide as well. Directions do state that it detects other combustible types of gases, propane, petrol fumes etc. There is an auto shut off feature, or it can also be turned off manually. Directions are clear and easy to understand. If you pull out the pre-formed plastic molded insert that cradles it inside the box, there is a nice drawstring pouch under there that can nicely hold the device and direction sheet. to have this in my toolbox.
So it’s quite easy to set up just put batteries in and turn it on then let it adjust to the environment and when it stops beeping you are ready to go …as you can see from my video it works .
This is a handy device for peace of mind. It’s good to have it in the house and check every so often. We’ve had building works recently and I was a bit worried about gas leaks.
I used this device to check the main gas points and it was clear. When I tested using a lighter it immediately gave notification of the leak so clearly it works well and with high sensitivity. It seems to be able to also detect minor leaks of other types of gases.
It came with the batteries which is great. Operation is very easy and straightforward. I’d recommend it for peace of mind.
very useful little tool, from now on I won’t have any doubts if there is a gas leak anymore, no need to open the windows for nothing and loose the heat from the house
the tester is very easy to be used having only 2 buttons, the red one for switching on/off and the green one to switch the tester from normal sensitivity to high sensitivity mode when green light is on. When gas leak is detected the tester alarm will go off and the led display will start to increase in level
sturdy enough to be stored in tools box with no problems having a compact design doesn’t take much space. Also a storage bag is included in the box to increase protection.
if not used the tester will switch off automatically after 5-7 min to save the battery which also are included in the box and when the the battery is low the power indicator will flash.
the range gas detection will vary depending on the type of gas
in my opinion the only thing down for the tester is that the time of calibration is a bit too long in otherwise all good
So I like this because the peace of mind it gives me is well worth it.
We recently had some boiler issues, and although it was checked, I just like to be sure, sure, so this is a great way to check.
Once I’d ran this’d around my boiler, I realised I wouldn’t know if it was working or not, so I tested it using a camping cooker that runs on butane(very carefully), and the detector seemed to instantly come to life, which I’ll admit made me jump a little bit because I was so focused the idea of the lights coming on, I forgot it would also give of a “decently loud” and “high tone” beeping to give both a, visual alert with the rubberised LEDs, and an audible alert, which just caught me off guard. So this little experiment put my mind very much to rest, that this was in fact doing exactly what it should, and very well, because I moved the tip of it further out and it took a second or so ands it once again went off, so, awesome.
The construction is good, it is a very simple item, a pen style body, where the batteries(top brand supplied) go into the top of the body, and then I just press the nice rubberised button for a second, I have to hold the button for a second, or it won’t come on, which is nice because it saves battery power from accidentally coming on, so I hold the button, it warms up which gives both a visual, and also audible tone when its ready, the I just point the tip anywhere I want to check. I do like that I can set it on “high” or “lower” sensitivity, and the fact that it’s easy for me to see which I’m using because the button(rubberised), lights up when its in “high” mode.
There’s a nifty little “pen style clip” on the body making it easy to clip into a shirt pocket, or trouser pocket, which I like.
All in all, this is a device for me, for us, that just provides a very welcome peace of mind, great.
A nice addition to the tool box.
This Gas Detector is easy to use and handy for pinpointing a gas leak.
It comes with a drawstring bag and batteries.
A well made safety product.
This natural gas detector is easy to set up and requires 2 AAA batteries that are supplied. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and it has both higher and lower sensitivity settings that between them cover a range of 50 to 1000 ppm (parts per million ). I tested the detector in three ways. Firstly, I used the method suggested in the instructions and briefly allowed a little gas to escape from our gas hob burners. The gas was immediately detected and lights flashed and a warning buzzer sounded. Secondly, I tried our external gas meter cupboard and was pleased to find that no leaks were picked up. Finally, I tried the space around a sealed gas feed (originally intended for a gas fire) in our lounge. Again no gas was detected. I then returned to the kitchen 10 minutes or so later and was not able to pick up and residual gas from my first test. From my tests this unit seems to be most suitable for ‘continuous’ leaks where the concentration of gas is high enough to be detected. I think that is probably what you want and do not have an issue with this. I must say though that my nose could detect the additive in the natural gas about as well as the detector picked up the actual gas. I guess if one actually smells gas then this unit is a useful confirmation that it is natural gas.
This gas detector is well made from good quality plastics and represents quite reasonable value for money. Most of us have fire and carbon monoxide detectors these days and so why not add a gas detector to complete the set of useful and potentially life saving domestic tools. For the price it is not a big over-head. It will quite happily run on rechargeable AAA batteries and so it can be easily topped up with power as and when necessary. I will continue to use my nose but I will definitely using my detector to check any suspicious smells. It will be interesting to see how long the batteries and sensor last but like the other detectors I mentioned it will not be difficult to replace at the end of its life. I guess I will find out as time goes by.
All in all, this is a good detector and I would recommend it.
The TopTes Natural Gas Detector is delivered with comprehensive instructions, a handy drawstring bag and a couple of Duracell AAA batteries (batteries very much appreciated).
Using the provided instructions to get up and running was easy enough, they are well worded and clear.
For testing I used both the gas stove and a disposable lighter, noting that you want to turn the detector on in a clear environment as it runs through an initial calibration. In both cases the gas was detected and the device alarmed very quickly.
In summary, it does what we need it to so no complaints.
Arrives in a nice, easy to open, branded box.
The tester comes with an instruction leaflet that is very easy to understand, two AAA batteries (Duracel) and a nice drawstring bag to keep the tester in.
The tester itself is plastic affair but feels rugged enough to keep in a tool box if you use the bag provided.
In general it is well made and easy to operate.
Long press on the power button turns it on and it goes straight into calibration mode – so do this where you KNOW there is NO gas present.
Calibration takes about 30 seconds then the red lights go out and the green light stays on. Ready to use.
The green S button is to change the sensitivity from high (default) to low. There must be a reason you may want it to be less sensitive but I cannot think of one myself so it remains in high sensitivity.
I’ve tried it on a cigarette lighter and it goes off straight away with all the red LED’s illuminating as well as emitting a high pitch warning tone.
I also tried it on the gas hob – again lots of noise and red lights.
This is definitely a handy tool to have in the house or tool box and is cheap enough not to worry about never needing to use it.
Lots of good points to this device:
Lightweight
Easy to use
Comes with good quality batteries
Only thing I would have preferred is for it to be USB chargeable rather than battery powered.
The batteries will no doubt sit in it for a long time unused – so could leak eventually?
If you are a regular user of these devices then its not an issue.
