so if like me you got given a nice new router by you ever so nice interweb provider, but ho wait I only have 1 lan port. This is what you need for the patch panel. Nothing else needed.
Needed a managed switch to bond 2x gigabit connections together. Not a direct criticism but the web interface not the easiest to navigate due multitude of options. So unless a bit of a network geek stick to unmanaged switches but if you understand networking it is a great little unit. Took me about 10 mins to figure out how to bond two connections. Setup a couple of subnets etc and away it went. unless you have a specific reason for a managed switch functionality you probably don’t need it.
I have purchased smaller Netgear switches previously, so was happy to invest in their technology. I set up this particular model just as easily and it has worked well since installation.
NETGEAR network equipment and reliability for my home networking projects are 2nd to none. I’ve used other switches in the past but still come back to these for performance, configuration (being managed) and being ideal for in home networking. My personal LAN speeds via server testware verify this being bang on spec. Being rack mount or shelf this sits well in my comms cabinet. Delivery and price are excellent all round and I can recommend this product.
The average home user could probably use it straight out of the box; but for the adventurous, it offers lots of customisable features – in fact it had quite a few features that I had to go off and research – as I had never heard of them 🙂
This product provides you with a compact router with a web based console.
It is easy to setup and install, with the ability to wall mount if desired. With a metal casing it is robust and suitable for an office environment, although with only 8 ports it will probably only work for a SOHO environment.
At a good price point, I would recommend this router for those who require a small, reliable device from a trusted manufacturer.
great switch… wanted to buy a Cisco and finally due to some colleague recommendation bought this one which is way cheaper and the performance are there. I will recommend. I am able to do a LAG with nas and create VLAN and you have the ECO mode so perfect for networking usage.
Have installed this under the stairs where all the main computing equipment lives, along with network points for each of the bedrooms. Means everything runs off one plug, rather than having three different 8-port switches plugged in to each other. Just need to try and get link aggregation working with it now…
GS108T-200UKS ProSAFE. Plenty of features and easy to setup. Advanced features not for a complete novice. Will just plug and go as unmanaged switches. The high quality of the product and software shows. Dual firmwares reduce chances of bricking them.
Supports green Ethernet and gives a power consumption reading. Rock solid metal case. Doesn’t get hot or create any noise. No fans.
Good switch, it is working as a central point in my home network. So far no problems. I like GUI, I like features. Easy to configure as long as you have networking knowledge and you understand what is Spanning Tree and LAG. Do not get me wrong, it will also work right out of the box as a switch without any configuration but with extra tweaking it will shine. Overall brilliant piece of kit. I would recommend.
I have the 8 port and the 24 port version and they are both great “Smart switches”, they work brilliantly with my EdgeRouter lite and NAS drives.
The ability to use Link Aggregation on my QNAP TS251 NAS is useful but the best thing is that they seem far “snappier” than my old unmanaged HP Procurve switches that I was using.
There does not seem to be a way to easily wall mount the 24 port one but thats the only downside.
Very consistent high performance switch, low latency and the WebUI is easy to access. I would recommend this switch for anyone that needs LAG, LACP, per-port error tracking or just a managed switch for VLAN use. Well worth the retail price.
Third one of these I’ve bought in last 5 years. Two going perfect but one did pack in after 4 years for no obvious reasons. They’ve taken a few knocks but are sturdy enough.
Update – net topology changed and a loop created on my sonos network. To solve this I needed to set on switching>stp>spanning tree state to disable and BDPU flooding to all-enable. Sonos also recommend that Under multicast>IGMP snooping status set to enable too.
Works out of the box without bothering with the helpful installation guide.
I have old desktops, newer laptops, NAS boxes and all work exceptionally well.
My only gripe was I was hoping the power supply would be integrated, not so, yet another power brick on the desk.
Bought this to connect a NAS and PC together so that I could get a gigabit connection. Metal construction and seems built like a tank. This switch also supports Link Aggregation which I fancied playing with later (and why I bough it). There are far cheaper switches if you do not want this feature which I’m sure will do a good job.
In the end you are buying a top quality product, metal case, decent PSU, fantastic constantly updated firmware…. If you dont have the money, buy cheaper. If you do, buy quality and know you wont need to replace it.
Replaced an unmanaged Netgear Gigabit switch that had developed a fault.
This is well priced for a managed switch, performance was much improved but take into account that previous switch was faulty and dropping packets.
Main reason for buying a managed switch over unmanaged was so that I could make use of the multiple network ports on my NAS.
Ended up replacing my other switch with one of these as well.
Excellent and very reliable product.
