It’s brilliant. Internet was always rubbish in our conservatory as the router is installed in the middle of the house so kitchen and dining room kind of causes a blockage for the Internet. Plugged the extension into the dining room and we can now use our phones in the conservatory. Great.
Used to extend the Wi-Fi network from router near entrance to the floor above. Set up was not the smoothest as the Android app that was meant for it was not updated to be compatible with the latest Android version.
Which was fine, because you could still use the Gateway IP of the extender to connect to it.
However, it was not able to detect the 5Ghz channel on my router, luckily it was able to detect the one on the ISP’s, so had to work around with that.
Otherwise, it gets you online by extending the network as advertised. Not trouble free, but it works.
I initially installed this to replace a powerline TP-Link unit that was unreliable. I live in a listed building and the signal from the main router doesn’t travel far out of the living room where it’s installed. I tried the wifi extender in several places, each of which initially seemed positive with good WPS connection back to the main router. Each time though the signal back to the router would slowly deteriorate from green to orange and then finally to red. At which point it gave unreliable connections. I gave up and ended up buying a 15m CAT6 cable and used it as an Access Point. Thus far this has worked well.
I can’t comment on the product a great deal as I only set it up last night. It was annoying. Neither instructions didn’t work. The router and extender would not connect by WPS button or using the browser. I spoke to my internet provider, they couldn’t help.
If you’re having issues: While plugged in with the power on, get a pin and push the factory reset button on the side. Then you’ll possibly spot your usual network with 2GEXT and 5GEXT on the end. I was able to connect to these with my usual password. I then connected using the browser method. Although, weirdly, the step by step process was completely different to the pamphlet instructions. But whatever, after an hour of trying, I was finally connected
2GEXT will give you a wider range but a slower speed. 5GEXT doesn’t stretch as far but is faster. I use 2G as I have a long house.
I needed an extender to help extend my wi-fi signal to the front door Ring peep hole camera.
The wi-fi signal it was receiving (RSSI) on the door camera was around 77 which is pretty weak, hence requiring some sort of extender.
Net gear was the brand of choice, so the ex3700 was recommended to me.
I don’t have super-fast broadband. Around 70 ish mbps.
I managed to find one on amazon warehouse used market for around 19 pounds.
Reasonably priced, I purchased it.
It came with instructions on how to set it up. This was the tricky bit.
It is not super straight forward and will require some patients.
Ideally you need to connect the ex3700 via a network cable to your computer to set it up.
If you connect it via WPS, your router will see it and connect to it.
However, when you connect to the extension variant signal on your Wi-Fi list, your wi-fi password doesn’t work.
It’s a common problem from the google searches I have done.
What you have to do is connect to it via the Ethernet cable and use the web browser instructions.
When it states connect to your existing network, you have to state you want to create a new password.
Make the password the same as your network password and it should detect and connect successfully.
It took a while to get my head round it but it works ok.
The speed I have obtained with the extender is much lower than the speed from the router itself.
Granted you will have loses when using an extender, but I didn’t realise it would be half.
I get 74mbps direct from my router, from the extender I obtain speeds at around 38mbps.
The speed output from the extender is adequate for running the camera, which was the sole reason I bought the extender.
The RSSI now for the camera is 37 /40 which is a good signal.
So I have decided to keep it.
If I was streaming Netflix 4k or similar, it might not perform.
In conclusion:
Quite disappointed at the speeds it can achieve, together with the setup not being as straight forward.
It would definitely be abit of a struggle for someone not really technical.
There maybe a higher model which would allow pass through speeds to be better, but would most likely to a lot more expensive.
I needed a new 5Ghz repeater to replace my 2.4 Ghz one and as that one worked well, I bought the updated model of it.
It works great and can’t fault it for what it does.
However, the set up instructions didn’t quite match reality.
The issue is that you follow the instructions and nothing appears to happen. The lights don’t change to the right colour, thus implying that a connection to the modem has NOT been made.
Until you unplug it and plug it in again.
Then the connections, which you thought weren’t happening, actually did happen all along.
Not a great issue, but it meant I spent 15 minutes pressing the WPS on the modem, then the sequence on the repeater and wondering if I’d got a dud.
Hence, dropping a star because instructions could have been clearer.
I bought this extender to improve the signal strength in part of the house where the signal is generally a little poor. It arrived very quickly – well packaged and presented and looks very well made. I have used Netgear products before so was happy to buy their products again.
The extender seems to work well and has improved the signal strength in the area required and the extender is small and not intrusive. The setup details are well written and presented.
My only concern was the time in setting up the wifi extender – with no obvious route to get technical support – so I have noted below how I eventually managed to do this – its not actually difficult but you need be aware of a couple of things.
Our router is Vodafone – and reading online it seems that there can be problems in connecting to vodafone apparatus – the normal route to connect the router is via WPS – if this works for you it will be very straightforward however despite many attempts it would not allow the route to connect to the extender through WPS.
When you first try to connect the ‘Settings’ on whatever wifi device you are using it may show the same router serial with ext extension name – each time I tried to connect to this _ext with the router password it would not accept the password …. if this is your problem …. then try this – get a pin and press the factory reset button on the wifi extender – when you do this it should provide a new Netgear setting … which doesnt appear when you first try to connect …. if you press on this setting it takes you through Netgear set up wizard and works fine.
I also cancelled my additional security settings with Vodafone whist setting this up – as this seemed to be causing a problem.
It is now working fine.
Bought this product after my original version made by a different company broke on me after about 3 years. I wanted to give this some time before leaving a review to make sure its had time to cause me issues and I could leave a proper review on this product.
Pros first:
Excellent signal boost. As someone who games on a PC and doesn’t have great internet as it is, this device helped me a ton. I will use Counter Strike Global Offensive as an example as it has an easy to use ping counter. Without this product I have a terrible ping of 200 to 450 often just crashing my game. With the use of this device I have received a ping of usually 30-45 with maybe boost of up to 60 max if things are becoming hectic. This is a massive increase in quality and provides for a great gaming experience rather than running into brick walls.
Easy to install. Unlike my previous device this was very easy to set up. On my previous device it took me roughly 2 hours to finally hook up and get fully working. With this device however I got it up and running within 10 minutes no joke. The booklet was very clear and precise and does not fill your head with tech jargin that you do not need to know. It is as simple as basically plugging the device in, clicking the WPS button and syncing it to the WPS button on your WIFI Box.
Speed Boost on Downloads. Now this is basically a secondary part to my first compliment about the device. These devices do not “boost” your download speed but simply give you the full benefits of what you are supposed to get from your current provider plan. So if you want faster download speeds in general apart from the odd trick you really just have to upgrade your service plan. However if you have noticed you are not getting the correct download speeds you are supposed to then this is an excellent device to help. I am on a very low plan so my download speed is rather pathetic with the most I get being about 5-6 mb per second. But without this device the most I achieved before was 2 to 3 mb per second. After installing this I always receive the correct 5-6 with the odd speed up to 7 at times unless I am running many programs or streaming many things in the background which will slow it down anyway.
Cons:
It Gets Hot. The device is small and compared to my last device it gets hot over time much faster. Its not scolding hot but it is something to keep in mind and I turn mine off when not using it for instance if I am at work then I am not home to use the device so why bother keeping it on right? when I return home its had time to cool down and that usually lasts a good amount of time (usually a week or so) before it heats up again.
Lost Connection. This happens rarely but is a con I will bring up to be clear on this. This has happened to me 2 or 3 times where I have had to turn off the system and wait about 10 minutes before it boots back to normal and starts working again. I have wondered if this is possibly due to the overheating but can not confirm. as mentioned I have owned this for some time now and its really not bothered me at all so ignore this complaint for the most part but wanted to state it for clarity.
Sum it up:
affordable, barley any cons, fast to install, great WIFI coverage, small and not poorly shaped and noticeable increase of speed in downloads. Worth every penny!
I don’t leave reviews very often. But I wanted to use this to flag with people comparing products that this is VASTLY easier to set up than the equivalently priced BT Wifi Extender.
I’m a software engineer who spent several years working for a large hosting company doing third line support. I was a system admin and network admin. I had access to a huge datacentre and most of the kit in it. I know about IP address, DNS, Ethernet protocols, TCP vs UDP, ports, etc. I KNOW MY STUFF. And the BT device I tried out before this one basically wasted about 3 hours of my life: I tried reconfiguring my main router, I tried updating the firmware on the device (the update failed, and the BT support thread basically said if you don’t like it then take it back and get a refund, which I did). The BT device had a band switch on it to select 2.4 or 5GHz, and the switch did nothing: the device would only scan for 5GHz networks. And when I DID finally bully the thing into getting connected it took out the network – presumably with some kind of IP conflict. In any case, I wasn’t going to hang around trying to fix it when I couldn’t even update the firmware, so I took it back.
Disillusioned with the whole idea of extending the range of my network, I tried one of these NetGear EX3700 AC750’s. Plugged it in. Connected an iPad. Stepped through the set up. It was informative. It was simple. It discovered all the 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks in the neighborhood and gave me enough options that I could set it up as I liked without me really having to know anything more than the basics about networks. Once set up, I unplugged it, moved it to a location further from the router, and it came back up serving me excellent WiFi to the previously-dark areas of my house.
So…basically…if you’re looking at options and the list of options includes BT and NetGear: trust an expert and cross BT off now. This is the thing you need!
