The most important thing to get right is the size of the racket. If you choose the correct size – and a racket isn’t too big or heavy – your child is much more likely to have fun on the court.

We recommend the following size for each age group:

• 2-3 years: 17 inches
• 2-4 years: 19 inches
• 4-6 years: 21 inches
• 6-8 years: 23 inches
• 8-10 years: 25 inches
• 9-11 years: 26 inches

If you’re unsure whether a racket is the right size, ask your child to grip it with their arm by their side and the head of the racket pointing towards the ground. If the racket is brushing the floor, it’s probably the right size. But if the racket’s bumping against the ground, it’s almost certainly too big, and if the racket is some distance from the floor, it’s likely to be too small.
