Works well for manual sharpening of chainsaw chains. Takes a little practice to ensure you are getting the angle correct but fairly easy to master.
I misplaced my old file and when I found it I had already purchased this one but decided to keep it because of the extras with i
All in a handy roll to keep with your chainsaw and ki
Great for chainsaw sharpening had a device to stop it from slipping. Very pleased. No picture attached as it was a present but the recipient is very happy
This kit should outlast the buyer if not lost . As you would expect Oregon tools have a lot of experience in chainsaws and chainsaw tools. It just works and is a tried and tested type that is favored by commercial users, that is of course the true test. This is a good purchase and a good price.
I only have a little electric Makita chainsaw but still a new blade costs more than this sharpening kit. I’ve been trying to eliminate a massive tree trunk that just refuses to die and it’s gradually claiming a chunk of my garden since it’s actually rooted in my neighbours garden. Problem is that it’s grown through and become part of a chain link fence. So every time have have a stab at reducing it, my little chainsaw hits some metal. If that happens more than a couple of times then it’s done for and I have been then buying a new blade and discarding the old one at a cost of about 17 if memory serves. So I bought this little kit, watched a couple of YouTube videos and had a crack at sharpening the blade rather than replacing it. I’m so glad I did. It worked a treat. And having spent half an hour working on the blade as instructed, it gave me another day of trouble free cutting (not the tree trunk). I will be revisiting the tree trunk after I’ve given the blade another spruce up so I’m well armed. The videos recommend to sharpening them often. I’m pretty sure that I could get mine in an improved condition by spending just ten minutes on it whereas my first attempt was very thorough and maybe even overdone it somewhat. The teeth on my blades are small compared to the big chains on the pro chainsaws so they will only benefit from sharpening several times before they’re worn down too low but apparently the big toothed chains can last for years. In a nutshell, this kit was fantastic value when offset with the potential cost of replacement, it is very easy to use as the little guides and jig thing makes it all very simple. Just gotta choose the correct file for the corresponding sized chain and choose the correct angle to file at. It’s basically 30 usually I think. It comes with basic instructions but you can’t beat a YouTube video to learn a new skill as I have found over the years. I have 1000’s of ‘s worth of tools but I’ve never really owned metal working tools so I’m not sure how long files should last but I guess they dull themselves over time. At least if that happens I’ll only need to replace that one component of the set which’ll be just a few quid. I do have one small gripe. The files are manufactured such that they have a ‘prong/spike’ on one end to fit into the little wooden handle supplied. I found that this spike kept bending. I thought the metal would have been made of a harder metal so that wouldn’t have been a problem but it wasn’t too much of an issue. I’m very happy with my purchase and it feels good to know I’m not being wasteful by now practicing good maintenance.
I am a bit of a novice at sharpening chainswas and while easy to learn how to file looking at you tube videos its a bit of oh well lets see and hope you get the angle correct. Seems that just a few strokes are required regularly and an old chain was a bit better but not as good as I expected it to be!
The kit is nicely packed and appears good quality so heres hoping my skills evolve!
Only used it once , it’s a great little pocket sized set and great for a tune up of the chain, especially if you hit a nail, staple or musket ball as we tend to find in the uk in big old trees that were around during civil wars
Not having sharpened a chainsaw before I found this simple and on an old blade it cut like butter.
Well worth the money.
As a newbie to the world of chainsaws i bought one last year to do some tree pruning with larger branches being the main use. of course after a while the blade begins to dull and a sharpening tool seems like the logical step. As i was inexperienced in sharpening chainsaw blades i went for this pack by the same manufacturer as the chain itself and as it comes with different sized files and a guide i was sure to get a good result. The instructions were a bit basic but i quickly got the right file and angle and set to work, a few minutes later i had a nice sharp set of blades on my chain again.
Now i have learned how to do it i will not buy another kit when this one wears out. I will just buy the right sized file and maybe the guide. The kit comes with most of the things you need but not the hooked chain puller some kits offer to advance the chain easily as you sharpen. It also only comes with one handle and you really want to fit the handle to the tool and leave it there, since you always need a round file for the blades and a flat one for the depth guide you need two handles. I fitted a spare one i had. If you take the handle off all the time it will be loose very soon and difficult to use safely. The case is not long enough for the tools to be stored with a handle fitted too which is a bit of an oversight.
So to sum up, the tools work, the instructions are basic but adequate and kit lacks a couple of small parts but does allow you to get the job done. If you know the size of file and angle you need you can save a few quid and buy the components separately but for beginners its just fine and the quality seems quite good..
