It’s a great thing, problem is that i can only get just over half way up my top lip with the trimmer then the guard hits my nose hits my nose so that part doesnt get trimmed, going sideways doesn’t fix it either with the guard being wider than the trimmer.
I’m on my third one of these. Works really well, but it’ll need replacing every ~3 years as the battery dies. If you buy with that in mind, it’s great for the price, so long as you’re prepared to have small hair clippings thrown everywhere, but I think that’s an issue with most beard trimmers.
As you would expect from a brand like Philips it is a great product made well.
For years I’d always used a Babyliss trimmer which tends to only last 18th a before it fails, that was also very patchy in terms of getting those difficult hairs where the direct changes. This trimmer works great where the hair direction changes and also in those other difficult bits like top lip and edge of chin/neck.
The lift and cut function works really well and the attachments are securely fixed and you don’t feel like they might fall off mid use.
Seems to have a good length of time from each charge, been using it a few months 2 or 3 times a week on just that first charge.
Would recommend to anyone looking for a reliable trimme
This replaced my old Philips trimmer and the difference between the old and new is insane. This cuts any length of facial hair without a fuss and feels a sturdy, well-made piece. My only one critical comment is the fact that it does feel quite large. However, I can only assume this is to fit the battery which lasts for weeks on end!
Long battery life, fine adjustment of trim length, trim length is securely held. Doesn’t nick my skin. The one disadvantage is the lack of trimmings collection, so there’s a fair bit of cleaning up to do afterwards. I didn’t realise how much difference this would make.
Had the same model but an older version for 10 years+ Served me very well but battery eventually stopped holding charge. As happy with the old one decided to replace with new philips 5000 series. So far not disappointed. trims better/closer than the old model and is lighter. All in all is an improvement on the old and would recommend.
As a man who takes pride in maintaining a well-groomed beard, the Philips Beard & Stubble Trimmer BT5502/13 has become an indispensable tool in my grooming arsenal. This trimmer offers several features that have significantly enhanced my grooming routine, but there are a few areas where it could use some improvement, which is why I’m giving it a candid 4-star rating.
Let’s start with the positives. The innovative lift-and-trim system is undoubtedly a game-changer. This design guides the hair towards the blades, ensuring an effortless and even trim in fewer strokes. I must admit that it took some getting used to at first, but once I mastered the technique, it has made my grooming sessions much more efficient. The trimmer glides smoothly through my facial hair, leaving behind a well-groomed and polished look that I’m proud of.
The double-sharpened full metal blades are another standout feature. Their ability to cut through more hairs in a single pass has significantly reduced the time I spend on trimming. The rounded blade tips are a thoughtful addition, providing a skin-friendly performance that minimizes the risk of nicks and irritations. As someone with sensitive skin, I appreciate this attention to detail, as it ensures a comfortable shaving experience, even during quick touch-ups.
The adjustable zoom wheel with 40 lock-in length settings is undoubtedly one of the trimmer’s greatest strengths. This feature allows me to customize my beard length effortlessly, catering to various styles and preferences. From a short and precise stubble to a longer, well-groomed beard, this trimmer adapts to all my grooming needs. This versatility has been a game-changer for me, especially when I want to experiment with different looks without visiting a barber.
Battery life is a critical factor for any grooming tool, and the BT5502/13 trimmer performs admirably in this aspect. A full one-hour charge provides a generous 90 minutes of cordless use, which is more than enough for multiple grooming sessions. The quick charge function is a true lifesaver on busy days. With just a 5-minute charge, I get enough power for a full trim, saving me from unexpected grooming emergencies. Additionally, the option to use the trimmer plugged in is handy when I forget to charge it in advance.
The waterproof feature of the BT5502/13 trimmer is also worth mentioning. I absolutely love that I can comfortably use it in the shower or clean it under running water without any worries. This not only simplifies the cleaning process but also ensures the trimmer’s longevity. The convenience of waterproofing cannot be overstated when it comes to grooming tools, and the BT5502/13 trimmer certainly delivers on this front.
Now, let’s touch on a few areas where I believe there is room for improvement. While the lift-and-trim system is innovative and efficient, it can be a bit tricky to master, especially for those new to grooming with a trimmer. It took some practice and patience to find the right angle and technique to achieve the desired results consistently.
I’ve noticed that the performance of the trimmer can be affected if my beard hair is too long or thick. In such cases, I often need to make multiple passes to achieve an even trim, which can be time-consuming. While the trimmer is great for regular maintenance and touch-ups, it may not be the ideal choice for initial grooming of longer or thicker beards.
Additionally, I would appreciate a more comprehensive user manual. While the trimmer is relatively straightforward to use, having a detailed guide with tips and tricks would be beneficial, especially for users who are new to grooming with a trimmer.
In conclusion, the Philips Beard & Stubble Trimmer BT5502/13 is a reliable grooming companion that has made my grooming routine significantly more efficient. The lift-and-trim system, full metal blades, and adjustable length settings are undoubtedly its standout features. The long battery life and waterproof design further enhance its appeal. However, there is room for improvement in terms of user-friendliness and performance on longer or thicker beards. Overall, I give the BT5502/13 trimmer a candid 4-star rating and recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable grooming tool for regular maintenance and styling.
Can use for any part of the body whether it is for the face/head/chest/back, it does the job and it does it pretty well. Battery life is great too, and it’s waterproof so it’s a real ease to clean.
My old trimmer was also Philips and lasted around 4 years, so I had expectations for this straight away. So far it has met and surpassed. I probably use this 1-2 per week, shaving down to the base level (without using a guard). My beard grows quite thick and it cuts through it like a hot knife through butter. No sound of strain or anything from the trimmer, handles it very well. I’ve used it about 20 times so far and charged it only once, showing its brilliant battery life. The shaver head itself is metal, so good quality and feels smooth against the face when using, older versions of this shaver have plastic heads which aren’t as good. The guards that come with it are adjustable to lots of different heights to suit different people but i don’t normally use that.
It also comes with a little brush which is really useful for cleaning after each use, which is really important for maintenence. Overall the best shaver I’ve used.
Mostly a good trimmer, I use on the lower settings, however it struggles to trim the very top of my moustache where it meets the base of my nose, so I have to use scissors to trim that area manually. Not had this issue with other Philips models. Battery life is good though.
Firstly the battery on this thing is awesome and it functions great.
My first annoyance was that there are so many adjustments you have to make on the size of the blade. It goes, 0.4-10mm but it takes 20 turns to get all the way up. For my neck I do 0.4 and my beard I do 3.5mm and that takes 11 turns. It’s still quite stiff to turn after 6 months of use.
Pros:
Functions well for short beards
Battery last a very long time
Easy to keep clean
It’s light
Cons
10mm won’t be long enough for longer beards
The size adjuster gets very tiresome with all the adjustment turns.
Size adjuster is stiff

I recently purchased the Philips Beard & Stubble Trimmer as a gift for my dad, and he absolutely loves it! This is a fantastic grooming tool that provides effortless, even trimming for a sleek and polished look.
The lift-and-trim system is an innovative feature that guides the hair towards the blades, resulting in a smooth and precise trim with fewer strokes. The double sharpened full metal blades are impressive, cutting more hairs in every pass for faster trimming. The rounded blade tips also ensure skin-friendly performance, making it a comfortable experience every time.
The adjustable zoom wheel is another remarkable feature that offers 40 lock-in length settings, ranging from 0.4 to 20 mm. My dad can now easily achieve an even trim at any desired length, without the need for multiple attachments. The quick charge function is also incredibly convenient, delivering a full trim after just a 5-minute charge.
Furthermore, the trimmer is 100% waterproof, which makes cleaning it a breeze.
I’ve had a Philips beard trimmer for years but a couple of year’s ago I decided to buy a rival brand rechargeable one, which works OK on my beard but refuses to cut the odd fly-away side whiskers. Something my venerable Philips one can still do even after many hundreds of trims.
So, I decide to treat myself to a new trimmer and Philips were always going to be the only choice! My beard is quite wiry and I like to wear it long – a lot of trimmers don’t allow trim lengths of longer than 10cm. This one goes up in even steps to 20cm and length is controlled by a simple dial wheel once you have selected the correct comb (<10cm or 10-20cm). The dial wheel is intuitive and sufficiently well positioned that it isn't easy to knock it mid-trim and change length by accident.
The combs seem redesigned compared to my decade or more old Philips trimmer which means it is easier to trim from almost any position. The blades are very sharp and, if experience is anything to go by, likely to remain that way. And, yes, it has no problem with those whispy fly-away side whiskers!
Battery life seems more than OK for at least a few trims but here is my one criticism - I hope you are reading this Philips. The shaver comes with a charging lead with a standard UK 3-pin plug. This is fine for charging the shaver normally but many of us have 2-prong plugs in the bathroom and not only might want the option to charge the trimmer from this, but more importantly if the battery is completely flat could use this socket to effect a plugged-in trim rather than having to wait until the battery recharges. I believe you can get a plug adapter which converts a 2 -pin plug into a 3-pin UK plug so why didn't you design the shaver to have a 2 pin lead and include one of these adapters giving us the best of both worlds?
I'm really happy with the shaver and would certainly recommend it but deducting one star simply because it can't be used plugged in to my bathroom socket.
I have had various beard trimmers over the years, Remington, Philips, Wahl, Silverlight (LIDL) and a couple of others.
The only one I really liked and that lasted well was an older Philips trimmer.
The Remington was a pain as it was a cabled trimmer and the depth guides weren’t that accurate.
The build quality of the Wahl was atrocious and it fell apart just oput of warranty!
The Silverlight was OK but the battery didn’t hold charge very long.
So when I saw another Philips on ‘Deal of the Day’ I thought why not give it a go.
First impressions were good, as on my earlier Philips the trimmer is self-sharpening and does not require oiling; the build quality is great and feels solid in the hand; and, the guides are slightly different from other trimmers, they have two prongs that slot into the top of the trimmer.
OK, charged it up and off I went.
Set the length to 2.5mm and lo and behold it trimmed my beard to the perfect length…this has always been hit and miss in the past as with all others I had to use the shortest setting and even then the length was often still too long.
Two guides are provided and there is a dial on the front for setting the length using each allowing a range between 1mm and 20mm.
Cleaning is simple, the trimmer blades having a positive and firm click into and out of the handle.
I have tried various other length settings and there is a noticeable difference between each, 3mm is too long for me and leaves my beard looking slightly scriffy, while 2mm is too short for my liking but at least you can see the difference!
I have used it for trimming the edge of my hair, particularly around my ears, but I wouldn’t try and trim my whole head with it because the blade is quite narrow, being designed as a bear trimmer.
As to the battery charge hold, in a year of use I have charged it only four or five times after using it 2 or 3 times each week.
I must say, this is probably the most accurate (for length) and best quality beard trimmer I have ever used.
This is a very good trimmer for stubble and beards. Very solid construction and feels nice to hold, and it’s easy to change the length by turning the wheel. Battery life is very good, and the quick charge feature is handy. Good cutting lengths with the included length combs, very sharp blades and a good powerful motor.
My only issues are it will not cut the stubble short enough. Unfortunately I had a Philips One Blade before this trimmer and that used to cut the stubble very very short which I preferred, and this 5000 series just won’t cut it short enough. So I ended up returning them and purchased something different. And also it won’t cut head hair very easily over a number 3 as it gets blocked up too quickly.
The battery life is good, it lasts about an hour on a full charge, which for me it lasts about a month before I’ll have to charge it again. It charges up considerably quick and has a charge indication light which shows when it’s fully charged. Also it has a quick charge feature which gives you about 10 minutes of use from a quick 10 minute charge, very useful if the battery has gone flat and you’ve planned to have a trim.
The blades are very sharp, I cut the top of my ear twice with this! They are supposedly self sharpening blades, both the top and metal parts of the blades run against each other and sharpen themselves automatically, only time will tell if this actually works. The blades cut through any amount of hair, long and thick, with no trouble at all, it just ploughs through. The motor sounds nice and it’s very fast running creating a very easy cut.
The length adjustment is a good feature. With just the metal part without the plastic clip-on length guide attached, it cuts fairly close and very short, this is the shortest setting it has, and it leaves a small amount of short stubble, turning the length adjustment with this head won’t adjust any length at all. It comes with two black plastic clip-on length guides which slot easily over the metal clipper part, and this is what adjusts when you turn the length dial. They slowly slide up and down in steps when you turn the wheel, and the length number is shown on the dial in a small display window.
It’s not very good at cutting head hair if it’s over a number #3. I tried even though it’s not designed for your head. I wanted a number #3 on the sides of my head so I set the trimmer to the longest setting on the smaller sized plastic clip, which was number 10, and tried it on my head hair. It did cut it very easily and evenly but the clip would become blocked up very quickly and needed emptying every time I cut some hair. I haven’t tried but it may be better at cutting very short head hair that wouldn’t block the clipper.
I haven’t tried the waterproof feature very much, but I have washed the trimmer under a tap gently to remove loose hair. Also I removed the metal clipper part which easily in clips from the trimmer, and washed the inside out with a small brush and water. According to the booklet it’s water resistant meaning it should be alright agains splashes and gentle cleaning, I’m not sure it would be suitable for using in the shower, or submerging under water.
