Was a birthday gift, comes in a nice box with everything you need
I bought this kit as I had no plants in my house and thought it would be fun to try growing from seed, I wanted some low maintenance plants as I am not much of a gardener and so decided on succulents. The instructions are very easy to follow and 3 weeks in I have had success with each type of plant (Aloe, Agave and Kalanchoe) some of each have germinated and I’m most pleased with the Kalanchoe which now has 3 plants coming through in the pot (only 1 showing in the picture) because the seeds really are tiny no more than dust so it was a case of just sprinkle the packet half in each pot and put a layer of soil over and hope for the best. If all 8 of my plants that have germinated grow to adult size then it will have been well worth the money for the fun and reward of growing them from seed.
I haven’t planted all the seeds but a good number of the ones that I did have sprouted. They are big enough now that I’ve repotted them and they seem to be doing well!
My only concern at one point was a white (I assume) mould that developed on the fiber pots that the kit came with. It didn’t look great but it doesn’t seem to have done the seedlings any harm.
My plants are growing so fast, except for the aloe seeds that they never succeeded germinating.
A neat little kit that’s fun to do with kids. Doesn’t come with ceramic pots so buy those separately, but the instructions are clear and it’s a good way to pass an hour.
Interesting so far, great little well designed kit, with everything you need to start off the seeds. Three packets of seeds are included and within each packet you get 3 or 4 different varieties. (11 in total so I think it’s good value for money). The kit also comes with a booklet with easy to follow instructions. The Kalanchoe seeds are so tiny though, it’s hard to see them, so I opened the packet and sprinkled them on, hoping for the best. Apparently the seeds take between 14 days and up to 4 months to germinate, which seems a long time to me. Hopefully they will germinate and the wait will be worthwhile-I’ll update once they have. I think this would make a lovely gift for someone into plants. EDIT: A week later and I have 5 seeds germinated already! (see last pic).
The instructions regarding the plastic bags were a bit confusing (I ended up not using them and the seeds still germinated fine) and the compostible pots were susceptible to mould after watering, so I had to transfer everything into bigger pots after a few weeks. The plants are growing quickly and are strong now though.
After seeing so many reviews advising the seeds didnt grow, I was sceptical but decided to go ahead anyway.
The little instruction guide in the set worked wonders, being new to gardening as a whole this step by step was a godsend. Everything being included in this start up set was also a bonus. Unless you’re a master succulent grower, it’s advisable to follow the instructions and you will see results in a couple of weeks.
You will get a lot of seeds in this pack which I would deem great value for money, considering grown succulents from the garden centre can soon mount up. If grown correctly you could have twice the amount!
I will definitely be interested in looking through their other kits
These arrived really quickly and in a lovely little box. I ordered these for a friend to go in some small plant pots I’d ordered for her she loves growing things from cuttings and seeds so I know she will love them.
I was a bit reticent when I first saw the seeds – the smallest (kalanchoe) were like specks of dust and in a transparent plastic packet – best for seeing them I guess but static made it difficult to get them out.
I planted the seeds using the soil and vermiculite provided and, as per instructions, popped them on the windowsill in the plastic bags to propagate. I put the peat pots inside some small ceramic plant pots I already owned – I’m not sure how the peat pots alone would stand up to the bottom-up watering method recommended, and I thought they may fall apart. My pots have drainage holes so it will be possible to let the water soak in through the bottom.
One week after planting, and the agaves had begun to sprout. After another few days, I can see some tiny kalanchoe and aloe seedlings poking through. Very exciting! So far, 4 out of the 6 pots have germinated. Patience is key – they are extremely tiny still. I have hope for the others.
Will update this review if there are future developments. A nice little kit.
Absolutely brilliant! Easy to follow instructions, simple to use packaging and all the pots had at least one succulent grow. After 4 weeks I just put them mostly into their own pots and there are about 18 plants in total.
The kit is super professional and the instructions come in a multitude of languages. Instructions are clear and after a week of sowing 3 Agave seeds and 3 Aloe seeds, 2 Agave and 1 Aloe have germinated. I have a Bearded Dragon so have been keeping the plants in their seamed plastic bags at the cool side of her enclosure as that is 70-75F which is optimal for the plants. Once they’re ready to be repotted I’ll move them to a windowsill!
Only downside is all seeds are packed in 3 bags with different species in the bags which makes it near impossible to tell which species of Agave etc. you’re sowing. Also the price is fairly steep for a starter kit.
Great little kit…but….as there are different varieties of each succulent, it would be nice to be able to tell what these are instead of having all the seeds in one packet…the kalanchoe seeds are basically dust, I’m not sure how I’m gonna sow them but we’ll see…will be a challenge 🙂 postage was super quick and they came a week earlier then stated
Turned up today opened the box and no agave mix in the box but have two aloe mix instead. Other than that looks a typical kit so will update this review when/if things start to grow.
I’ve been growing them for about a week and a half now. A combination of following the instructions provided and succulent forums I already have germination, two of three mixes have germinated. Will update when/if the third mix does but they can take up to 4 weeks.
Very nice beginner kit with everything you need. As long as you have some old plastic lids you won’t need to invest in pots until a month or two in.
I have some left over seeds for two of the mixes and so hopefully when I am used it it I will be able to grow more. Looking at loads of plants at a very very decent price as long as you are patient!
It is very good but it took us awhile and was very messy and would advise this for non messy kids
