Rust-Oleum Colourless Wax Polish
Rust-Oleum’s History
Solving challenges is the very foundation of who we are. After all, in the beginning, our founder, sea captain Robert Fergusson, didn’t particularly care about paint. He just wanted to keep his ship intact. That’s why, when he noticed that an accidental splash of fish oil had stopped the relentless spread of corrosion on his rusty metal deck, he immediately recognized it for what it was: A valuable solution. Welcome to Rust-Oleum, home of trusted quality—and powerful solutions—since 1921.
- If you’ve got a surface you need to protect or a look you want to transform, you’ve come to the right place. We have a coating for every challenge.

So far it’s kept a good finish and has protected the pai
Bought this to polish up some painted recycled furniture, works a trea
For me it is definitely 5 stars, it did the job very well and I am pleased what I have achived 🙂
It’s so easy to use I find its much easier to apply with a lint free cloth rather than the soft brush, there is also a slight sent but well worth the money as I have purchased it before from a store and it was pricey.
Do want they do and steady at it am please am please
This finishing wax is excellent it goes on very easy my tip is to use a nice new soft paint brush let it dry overnight, it doesn’t streak it doesn’t smell, in the morning buff it up with a clean soft cloth, I used it on my nest of tables so I also sprayed it with Mr Sheen so that they slide into each other, excellent product, arrived before time & was well packed, I have no hesitation in recommending this product & the seller.
Used this on a teak bench we bought after my brother passed away perfect for the job in hand it was very easy to apply the water just runs off also I’ve used it to waterproof other things in the garde
It came quickly and works well to give a protective coat on furniture you have painted, it is almost solid but should imagine would go a bit more mushy in hot weather. Best too give a couple of coats and then you buff it out and does have a strong smell at first that made my stomach a bit unsettled but goes after a few hours, the smell that is and I guess the unsettled stomach .haha
I’ve used the wax over their chalk paint on two items I’m restoring. Love the paint. The wax is solid, put some on a cloth, rubbed it over and buffed it up. I really like the finish. I’ve taken a photo so you can see the difference of before and after, the shade is now a tiny bit darker. I’m happy with that overall really happy with the product.
Really like this stuff !
I bought it to finish off a busy board i had made for my sons 1st birthday. After sanding and staining the wood i finished it off with this wax and it went on beautifully. It was so easy to apply, I just used an old rag, covered the wood, left it to soak in and then buffed it off. I liked that it was colourless and odourless, easy to apply for a diy novice like me and that it would protect the wood against the usual spills that happen with a 1 year old around.
6 months down the line and it’s held up really well.
It’s been about a month and so far so good.
Very happy.
Prior to the wax I used the rustelm paint which I would also recommend. Its completely transformed my kitchen.
As the wax is drying it does look slightly patchy but after two hours it is completely even and looks great.
There is no yellow marks as some other reviewers have written, the wood has dried exactly the same colour as before.
Really happy with this product. I upcycled some old pine side board tables. I was a bit worried having read some of the conflicting reviews but it did what it said on the tin. I have used other products and this was very similarly good. I purchased the clear and it didn’t do anything to the colour underneath- the result was the exact same applied paint colour but with a shine. I used GraceMary chalk paint in floursack which is basically off white, applied the wax with a cloth. Worked well and will buy again.
This is my second pot to be purchased. I am very impressed with the quality. You need to have it at room temperature and then it goes on to the furniture easily. Leave for 10 minutes and then it buffs up lovely. It leaves a little bit of a shine and you can really feel the difference after applying as the wood is much smoother & protected. I bought it as an alternative to the Annie Sloan as I had a lot to shabby chic. I used the same brand chalk paint and am happy with the results. I would 100% recommend. The wax does have an odour when applying, I used a fan whilst working and the odour was gone within 30 minutes. The wax does go a long way. If you want an extra shine just repeat the proces after buffing the first time.
It gives a nice finish but I think the tin was already opened and the item was used before it was sent to me. It wasn’t *half* empty but there was quite a bit of gap between the lid and the level of the wax. Additional to that, the lid was extremely easy to open (it was just pushed down and taped…), which makes me think the item was used+returned before being sent to me. Nevertheless I used it on three different pieces of furniture (1 small, 2 medium items) and still have half the amount of wax than the original amount left (again, not half the tin but the original amount).
The finish is definitely nice and natural and as others have already mentioned, I think a cloth works so much better (I used an old cotton tshirt). I had to do a few coats until I got the shine I wanted but I think this is fairly normal. I wish I had taken before and after pics! Overall, I am happy and did not bother to return the item since I knew I wouldn’t have needed all of it for my DIY project.
I was rather wary regarding the wax as there were several references in the feedback to the strong, nauseus, smell. I had no issues with any unpleaseant smell, and there is no warning on the tin to use in a well ventilated space or wear a mask if you suffer from breathing issues etc which I would have expected if that was a likely side effect. There is a large warning regarding Naptha and its effects as “it contains Naptha”, but without any accompanying data as to the percentage or indeed a mention of any other ingredients I assume the wax must be generally considered as a safe product.
There is also feedback about a streaky finish. I did see signs of this. I was applying the wax over Dusty Pink, a relatively pale colour and after one coat the wax did look rather patchy. However a second coat made a distinct improvement yielding a much deeper and richer hue. The finish was not a totally even sheen, but I think in part is the nature of the combination of the chalky paint and the wax.
As regards the consistency of the wax I would agree with others that it is similar to shoe wax, possible slightly softer. the main difference is that the wax is much “oilier” and so spreads much more easilly and can be worked in and buffed with a cloth. I suspect the ease of spreadability is dependent on the air temperature. I applied it with ambient temperatures of twenty degrees plus. I imagine on a cold winters day it could be a very different story.
Putting more effort into working the wax into the surface of the paint also pays dividends. I used plain, lint free cotton scraps purchased as a large boxful from CPC at a very good price and have lasted a considerable time. You can rub the wax in and use a second cloth to buff the final result. There was some lifting of the colour, but nothing that caused a problem. Personally I do not see how using a brush could be anything like as effective.
Overall a good final result, but a bit more hard work on my part and I believe it would have been better still.
