Rust-Oleum’s History

Solving challenges is the very foundation of who we are. After all, in the beginning, our founder, sea captain Robert Fergusson, didn’t particularly care about paint. He just wanted to keep his ship intact. That’s why, when he noticed that an accidental splash of fish oil had stopped the relentless spread of corrosion on his rusty metal deck, he immediately recognized it for what it was: A valuable solution. Welcome to Rust-Oleum, home of trusted quality—and powerful solutions—since 1921.

  • If you’ve got a surface you need to protect or a look you want to transform, you’ve come to the right place. We have a coating for every challenge.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought to finish a cupboard, having used chalk paint. Very easy to brush or wipe on. Polished off to a soft sheen. Couple of coats, cupboard looks great, very pleased.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAfter reading some reviews about this wax i was scared to use, I had just spent 2 days on and off painting a marble fireplace with CHALK paint in a dark grey. I used a lint free cloth and waxed and polished as stated and the fire place colour is exactly the same, i hardly made a dent in the tin I bought but I have many more projects underway so well worth it. very little smell, i used sparingly and built on that, no streaks, no marks and no changing of my chalk paint colour. pic 1 before wax and pic 2 waxed and polished (you can even see the shine)

5.0 out of 5 stars I was scared to use after reading some reviews but this Wax was amazing!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUsed over Frenchic chalk paint to seal a stool. Creates a waterproof finish which seems surprisingly durable. Not sticky. Bit of a faff to put on but then you save time not having to prime the paint so works out equivalent in the end. You really don’t need much so this tin should do multiple projects.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat for protecting the chalk pain from chipping, but it does alter the color of the paint especially if you use a cream colored paint as I did. It made the paint slightly darker.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI honestly don’t know where the bad rewievs are coming from. Its’ simple, just follow the instruction and do not apply to match product even though it seems that it didn’t cover the surface completely becuause you can repeat the process after 10-15 min.
For me it is definitely 5 stars, it did the job very well and I am pleased what I have achived 🙂

It’s so easy to use I find its much easier to apply with a lint free cloth rather than the soft brush, there is also a slight sent but well worth the money as I have purchased it before from a store and it was pricey.

This finishing wax is excellent it goes on very easy my tip is to use a nice new soft paint brush let it dry overnight, it doesn’t streak it doesn’t smell, in the morning buff it up with a clean soft cloth, I used it on my nest of tables so I also sprayed it with Mr Sheen so that they slide into each other, excellent product, arrived before time & was well packed, I have no hesitation in recommending this product & the seller.

It came quickly and works well to give a protective coat on furniture you have painted, it is almost solid but should imagine would go a bit more mushy in hot weather. Best too give a couple of coats and then you buff it out and does have a strong smell at first that made my stomach a bit unsettled but goes after a few hours, the smell that is and I guess the unsettled stomach .haha

I’ve used the wax over their chalk paint on two items I’m restoring. Love the paint. The wax is solid, put some on a cloth, rubbed it over and buffed it up. I really like the finish. I’ve taken a photo so you can see the difference of before and after, the shade is now a tiny bit darker. I’m happy with that overall really happy with the product.

    Really like this stuff !

I bought it to finish off a busy board i had made for my sons 1st birthday. After sanding and staining the wood i finished it off with this wax and it went on beautifully. It was so easy to apply, I just used an old rag, covered the wood, left it to soak in and then buffed it off. I liked that it was colourless and odourless, easy to apply for a diy novice like me and that it would protect the wood against the usual spills that happen with a 1 year old around.

6 months down the line and it’s held up really well.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUsed this after painting the kitchen cupboards with rust-oleum anthracite chalk paint and it turned out really well! The grey got a tad darker after using the wax but it even looks better in my opinion. Was moderately easy to apply with a cloth (and warming it up for a little while), and despite looking very patchy for about 3 hours it then evened out a lot and a second coat did the final job. Still have nearly half the tin left as well after applying twice on 8 cupboards. The only downside is the stench of the wax! Despite open windows for over 5h during and after using it, the smell still lingers and it’s really unpleasant.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks good but the smell is horrific

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersUsed this on a stool I reupholstered and painted with rust-oleum chalk paint. Obviously my chalk paint did not stay chalky after I used this but the results are great and more protected which is what I wanted.
It’s been about a month and so far so good.
    Very happy.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersIt is still drying but you can see that the furthest cupboard away has dried perfectly fine. It feels exactly as it did before the wax went on, once its dried and theres no grease left. I used a sponge and it took 30 mins to do 7 cupboard doors, 5 drawers and 2 doors. Ive used less that 1/4 of the tin so it goes really really far and so easy to use.
Prior to the wax I used the rustelm paint which I would also recommend. Its completely transformed my kitchen.
As the wax is drying it does look slightly patchy but after two hours it is completely even and looks great.
There is no yellow marks as some other reviewers have written, the wood has dried exactly the same colour as before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis wax was used to complete a furniture renovation. I applied it over the Rustoleum antique white furniture paint. It needs buffing which is quite strenuous but leaves a nice waxed sheen across the paint surface which will give good protection. Not as sheeny as I was hoping for but still good. I’ve only given it 4 stars because of the harsh smell it has. But after a day or so it’s not so noticable.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersUsed this finishing wax for two pieces that I’d painted using Rust Oleum chalk paint (clotted cream). Well worth using to give that slight finishing sheen which I hope will also protect all my hard work. The two Rust Oleum products have totally transformed my old mahogany pieces into modern looking pieces which now have a new lease of life and which I hope will last a few more years! Well worth the effort. Thoroughly recommend.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersUsed this over grey chalk paint for a piece of furniture and despite a number of buyers saying it didn’t’ change the colour, it definitely changed my item darker… probably a couple of shades darker… no huge deal for me but ideally i bought this based on the reviews saying it remains the same colour. As said, no huge deal to me but it’s a warning to others who may not want any darker colour changes. Overall, the product seems nice but only time will tell.

Really happy with this product. I upcycled some old pine side board tables. I was a bit worried having read some of the conflicting reviews but it did what it said on the tin. I have used other products and this was very similarly good. I purchased the clear and it didn’t do anything to the colour underneath- the result was the exact same applied paint colour but with a shine. I used GraceMary chalk paint in floursack which is basically off white, applied the wax with a cloth. Worked well and will buy again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product would recommend.

Golden Review Award: 152 From Our UsersI bought this lovely tv cabinet for 20 with The intention of revamping it . I did a lot of searching for different paints and wax however I though that I would give the ‘Rust-Oleum’ a go! That was the best decision I made, my lovely unit looks so well presented in my open plan living room. Everyone comments on how lovely it looks… I did a layer of rust-oleum chalk paint which I have attached the link ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00KHVNGGM?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image ) and also the lovely gem handles ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00TD6ZNA4?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_pd_title ) hope this review is helpful as it would definitely have persuaded me

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely homely touch... stunning finish on a lovely revamp ☺️

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersI used this on a light wood varnished pew after rolling on two coats of Rustoleum ‘Winter Grey’. I used two coats of the wax, buffing after each, and applied it with a wide brush. It gives a slight sheen (and takes away the chalky feeling for people who hate it) and seems to be protecting the pew reasonably well, it will mark if knocked off other furniture for example but will stand up to kids clambering over it and getting bashed with most toys. Also darkened the colour quite a bit, I found the paint looked pure white without wax but after wax it looked the same shade of grey on the tin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Smells nice and does the job!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersYou do not need much of the product to seal your work. No noticeable lingering odours and gives a smashing finish on wood, paint (acrylics and chalk types) and dyes. Rub on with a lint free cloth and allow to dry and then buff up with a clean cloth. Leaves a satin finish that’s hardly noticeable. My latest project was sealing a recently upcycled Lloyd Loom ottoman; part painted with ordinary emulsion paint (and a small amount of plaster of Paris mixed in to give an aged affect), the rest left natural, where the material used by L.L.is reconstituted paper (how they made all their products), and it worked very well on this too. The pot will last me ages, but I’m going to purchase a spare, so I don’t run out.

This is my second pot to be purchased. I am very impressed with the quality. You need to have it at room temperature and then it goes on to the furniture easily. Leave for 10 minutes and then it buffs up lovely. It leaves a little bit of a shine and you can really feel the difference after applying as the wood is much smoother & protected. I bought it as an alternative to the Annie Sloan as I had a lot to shabby chic. I used the same brand chalk paint and am happy with the results. I would 100% recommend. The wax does have an odour when applying, I used a fan whilst working and the odour was gone within 30 minutes. The wax does go a long way. If you want an extra shine just repeat the proces after buffing the first time.

It gives a nice finish but I think the tin was already opened and the item was used before it was sent to me. It wasn’t *half* empty but there was quite a bit of gap between the lid and the level of the wax. Additional to that, the lid was extremely easy to open (it was just pushed down and taped…), which makes me think the item was used+returned before being sent to me. Nevertheless I used it on three different pieces of furniture (1 small, 2 medium items) and still have half the amount of wax than the original amount left (again, not half the tin but the original amount).

The finish is definitely nice and natural and as others have already mentioned, I think a cloth works so much better (I used an old cotton tshirt). I had to do a few coats until I got the shine I wanted but I think this is fairly normal. I wish I had taken before and after pics! Overall, I am happy and did not bother to return the item since I knew I wouldn’t have needed all of it for my DIY project.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersFirst time using Rust Oleum products and I am pleased with the results, although I feel that the greater the experience you develop using them the better the results would become. Like other things in life, the more care and effort you put in the more you will get out.

I was rather wary regarding the wax as there were several references in the feedback to the strong, nauseus, smell. I had no issues with any unpleaseant smell, and there is no warning on the tin to use in a well ventilated space or wear a mask if you suffer from breathing issues etc which I would have expected if that was a likely side effect. There is a large warning regarding Naptha and its effects as “it contains Naptha”, but without any accompanying data as to the percentage or indeed a mention of any other ingredients I assume the wax must be generally considered as a safe product.

There is also feedback about a streaky finish. I did see signs of this. I was applying the wax over Dusty Pink, a relatively pale colour and after one coat the wax did look rather patchy. However a second coat made a distinct improvement yielding a much deeper and richer hue. The finish was not a totally even sheen, but I think in part is the nature of the combination of the chalky paint and the wax.

As regards the consistency of the wax I would agree with others that it is similar to shoe wax, possible slightly softer. the main difference is that the wax is much “oilier” and so spreads much more easilly and can be worked in and buffed with a cloth. I suspect the ease of spreadability is dependent on the air temperature. I applied it with ambient temperatures of twenty degrees plus. I imagine on a cold winters day it could be a very different story.

Putting more effort into working the wax into the surface of the paint also pays dividends. I used plain, lint free cotton scraps purchased as a large boxful from CPC at a very good price and have lasted a considerable time. You can rub the wax in and use a second cloth to buff the final result. There was some lifting of the colour, but nothing that caused a problem. Personally I do not see how using a brush could be anything like as effective.

Overall a good final result, but a bit more hard work on my part and I believe it would have been better still.
