We loved it. Easy to learn. Jewel theme is great. Enjoable with repeat playing.
The game was well presented, easy to learn and popular with all who played. Thank you.
My Arab friend and I (Cypriot) acted as merchants from our countries while playing this Was very fun. One of my fav games to play!!
best board game ever and for everybody. it might be a little hard to learn the game but as soon as you learn it , you can’t stop playing. the quality of the chips are great as well. the cards might get a little born out after a while but still. this is the best gift for anyone into board games.
Very well made and an innovative game which is skilful and challenging but a round can be played in well under an hour (and without needing a lot of space).
A great game. Easy enough to learn but will take a lifetime to master. Like a lot of good new games just as you think you have a winning strategy your opponents develop perfect counter strategies. Added to this each game has subtle differences in the set-up that mean there isn’t a singular winning strategy anyway, you have to adapt to the game as it is. I cannot imagine getting bored with this game.
Each of the expansions included add a novel twist to an already enjoyable game. I bought the expansions when on offer so the value was especially great. But in any case if you enjoy Splendor and want to change it up whilst staying true to what makes the game great do consider these!
I love the Splendor game! So when I found out about the expansion pack I had to buy it straight away. My husband was a bit wary of it as he usually doesn’t think that expansion packs are the best, but he was soon won over. They add a new level to the game that changes the goal completely, still the same game but with some deeper thinking involved!
Great game, reminded me slightly of Ticket to Ride and Dragonwood with regards to game play, strategy and collecting points. Even my 6 year old and 9 year old love it. I just wish packaging with board games wasn’t so wasteful, it would fit in a much smaller box… and then we wouldn’t need so much storage for excessive box sizes on our shelves!
My 10 year old daughter really likes this game. It’s for 2 – 4 players only, but is just as good with 2 as with 3 or 4. The more players the longer it takes – 4 players would typically take a good hour. The Marvel version is a lot more expensive than the ‘classic’ version even though I believe it’s the exact same game, but the Marvel illustrations are great, and even though she’s not seen any of the movies, she is familiar with some of the characters which adds to the interest. First time reading the rules and looking at all the cards and counters and it feels like it’s really complicated, but once you start playing you realise it’s actually very simple. There’s a fair amount of luck involved, but you can play different strategies too, so a nice balance for families.
This game ticks all my boxes. Its incredibly easy to learn and the rules can be explained to newcomers in a few sentences. Gameplay is quite quick per turn and can be paused to be social without damaging flow. You can play with strategy but people playing for the first time can also win. The tokens are heavy, quality items with excellent artwork on each card. I own this myself and have given it as a well received gif
My brother in-law purchases board games all the time. He has shelves covered with them. During the summer he introduced us to Splendor and our 7 yr old enjoyed it so much we bought our own box to play at home.
It’s very simple to learn and adjust the rules progressively for new and young kids joining. It does get a bit boring playing with only two people after a while, but groups of 4-5 make the game come alive as the shortfall of pegs or coins available forces players to strategize more and more.
It’s definitely a great game for the current lockdowns and family events.
I bought this for my fiance for Christmas and we both love playing this game. The video demonstrating how to play (found on YouTube) is a really good introduction to the game, and we picked up the rules of play quickly after watching this.
The flow of the game is great, and the pace changes with you. There hasn’t been a time yet where I’ve been bored waiting for someone to take a turn.
The game pieces are made up of playing cards (of regular size and thick card material), square cardboard Noble tiles and plastic round discs. The round discs have a really good weight to them and feel a bit like good quality poker chips.
All in all, I’d definitely Italy buy this game again and I’m currently looking at the expansion to go with the game as we enjoy it so much.
The Game is fun and challenging.
I loved it when I played worst at my friends and ordered mine. For a board game I thought its a bit expensive to pay 25 pounds perhaps the developer can consider the pricing. But the box and plastic quality of cards and tokens is good so I am not taking a star away for that.
The instruction is really simple but you have to think ahead in game with numbers and pairing to collect cards which makes really interest for people of all ages.
I love beating my husband at this game lol!!!!
The expansion pack offers 4 new ways to play, keeping the game fresh and interesting, these game modes each come with a a variety of either new cards, new pieces and new rules for each mode. They’re fairly easy to learn and each new mode changes how you play and win the game. It’s definitely worth getting if you already have the original splendor game, but if you don’t have it then this is worthless to you. My main issue with this is the packaging itself, it comes in the same size box as the original splendor game, but doesn’t have as much cards and pieces as the original, so it feels like a waste of packaging. However, you can fit all the new pieces of this expansion and the original into this expansion pack box, so it kind of makes up for it, even if it doesn’t fit that well into it. Would have been perfect if it was designed to fit it all into the box properly, you kinda have to stuff it all in there
The only downside of this game is its highly addictive and will probably make it into your dreams if you play it all evening.
One of the best things about it is, unlike other popular strategy games, it is fairly weighted, giving everyone the opportunity to win regularly. It is high engrossing and really good for families as its easily accessible for multiple ages, whilst remaining challenging.
The marvel version has an added layer to the original, although you can play it without the extra elements. Also the marvel cards are well illustrated and kept my nieces and nephews highly entertained and engaged.
We’ve owned (and loved) the standard version of Splendor for a couple of years, and because our kids are huge fans of the Marvel films this appealed to us.
It’s a great tie-in, with a natural link between the gems in the standard game and the Infinity Stones. The game-play is simple, smooth and different enough to the original while still being recognisably Splendor – it’s the same basic game underneath but with slightly different rules and mechanics that merit a slightly different strategy.
The quality of the pieces is good too. The card deck is suitably robust with some quality illustrations of a wide range of Marvel characters (not just ones from the MCU films), and the coloured chips are surprisingly weighty, which gives a real feeling of quality.
You don’t necessarily need both the standard and Marvel versions of Splendor, but they’re different enough to satisfy players, especially if you’re fans of the films and comics.
We enjoy games evenings as a break from TV and to engage with each other. From traditional games like Scrabble, Rummikub, cribbage, dominoes etc., we became aware of the huge range of newer board games and looked for an entry level. Splendor was recommended on YouTube reviews as a good place to start, and we would fully endorse this. We did find it took a couple of run throughs to fully understand the game play but have since played it regularly and added other games (such as Century and Duel) to our collection. The quality of the components is superb, the pieces a joy to handle and the artwork quite beautiful. 100% recommend to anyone entering this genre of games.
This game is excellent! I had an amazon voucher for my birthday recently so decided to buy a new board game. I’ve a few on my wish list, but wanted something that would be good for two players and saw this mentioned a few places online as being a good option, so thought I’d get it and see. I am so glad I did!
When the game arrived, my husband read the blurb on the box, and said it sounded really boring, so I was worried it wouldn’t be enjoyed. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Splendor is a simple enough game, you get gem tokens and buy cards, thereby increasing your number of gems to buy more cards and gaining prestige. It doesn’t sound all that thrilling, but there is something so fun and enjoyable about the game, you just find yourself wanting to play again and again!
I agree with some reviews that the end point of 15 points can feel a bit like stopping when you’re just getting started. We’ve tried ignoring that and playing until all the cards are gone and counting total points, or picking a higher number “end point” eg 25 instead. So depending on what you fancy you can play things a little differently. We’ve also tried dealing out a couple of the low level cards at the start as well, when playing with our children, which helps to get the game going a bit more quickly.
Overall I can’t recommend this game enough, it’s so much fun, and really reasonably priced. Buy it, you won’t regret it!
After having a long think as to what board game to pick up i settled on splendor. I do enjoy a varied amount of games from the more complicated, story driven games like Eldritch horror to the more simple ones the Tsuro and this fits perfectly in the middle. My Mrs was not enthralled with the prospect of playing this game after a long day out but after playing it for the best part of 4 hours she found herself itching for one more game, i think i have started a new addiction for her (potentially life threatening). This game is brilliant in the fact that it is simple to pick up (took us 1 game to understand the rules) but deep in stategy (many different strategies, all with their nerits and downfalls). I read reviews from many different websites with people saying it is too simple for them but for a group that enjoys board games but cant find the time for a long 3 hour game it is a brilliant choice. This was also nominated for the coveted spiel de jahre award which for anyone who knows what that is, is quite an amazing feat. The cards are pretty and the currency being made using poker chips is a lovely touch. The box itself is well thought out too with seperate sections for each stack of cards and chips. Well worth the 25 price and if you can get it in the sale i would snap it up faster than Hussain Bolt running for Chicken nuggets. 9/10 easily but not quite 10/10 as nothing is ever perfect. There are expansions if that would help you make your purchase but they are not necessary.
Cant stop playing this game it’s very addictive! We really like it and so do our teenage children. It’s really all about planning ahead so you dont waste a move. It involves set collection of different gems which in turn earn you bonuses that you can use straight away. Gives your brain a really good work out. Simple to learn and simple to teach. Well made t componements. Your very much playing for yourself and rushing to collect 15 points before the others. It’s different to a lot of games. Playing time is about half hour or maybe a bit more. Very quick to set up and put away. You can almost start playing within a couple of minutes. Several different strategies can be applied but no clear way is the best to win which keeps the game fresh and interesting. We play loads of games but i think this one will be off the shelf pretty often. Infact since we purchased it it hasn’t made the shelf as it hasn’t left the table!
Splendor – The current hotness and the buzz machine is in overdrive.
Is it worth the hype tho?
Hmm…
I feel much of the hype with splendor is down the the components, which are fantastic. The chips are solid, weighty and just nice to collect and hold – they make a wonderful click clack when you pick them up and put them down.
The game itself is about set collection with a stripped down ‘build an engine’ mechanic, the theme tying it together is so thin you have to be careful not to poke your finger through it…
It’s simple to learn, each players turn is blindingly fast, the game is done and dusted in as little as 20 minutes.
This is no strategic masterpiece, If your after a rival to Terra Mystica or Bora Bora – This isn’t it.
In fact, without those amazing components I doubt the game would have registered on most peoples radar at all.
That said, with everything combined this game is quite appealing, and somewhat addictive.
It has a physicality that just makes it fun to play and you stop worrying about the depth of the game and the thin theme and just start enjoying it for what it is – An easy to learn, quick to play opener / lunchtime game.
So, worth the hype? Maybe / maybe not, but its certainly a decent and fun game that’s worth a play or two (If you can find it anywhere!).
