Has I’m quite tall (6ft 5in) I have always found that majority of spades are quite small, however this was a good size and very sturdy. Used several times and does the job.
Well made, robust , light enough. Sturdy spade. Wooden part made from one piece of solid wood, accept the small top part of the handle…also wood. The metal part is solid and reliable too. Great buy. Seeking a new form in due too.
I am very happy with this spade, polished steel blade, and traditional wooden handle.
Comfortable to use, and very good value for the money, would certainly buy again if needed.
Great digging spade. Looks strong and sturdy though haven’t used it yet. If you want a smaller spade, ‘ladies’ size, which I wish I had got for my mother, then buy the ‘border spade’.
Feels proper quality. Time will tell if it lasts but it looks like it will. Have used for quite a substantial DIY job digging a 10m trench for a water pipe which has to be 3/4m deep!
A FANTASTIC LITTLE SPADE IT REALLY IS THE BEST I HAVE BEEN WANTING ONE OF THESE FOR TOO MANY YEARS AND NOW I HAVE ONE I AM OVER THE MOON WITH IT. I WOULD RECOMEND THIS SPADE RO ALL ON HERE WHO WANT A SPADE THAT DIGS EASY AND IS NO A LOT OF BACKWORK AFTER ALL THE SPADE IS SUPPOSED TO DO THE DIGGING/
Feels really good in your hand, and much more so than the hardened plastic handled spades which require less care and might last longer.
I’ve a very expensive fibreglass/plastic handled one that has served me for nearly 3 decades. I don’t like it as much as this one.
Having taken over an allottment that was quite weedy I decided to buy a new spade to dig up the weeds( last spade split). This spade has done the job, is light to handle and hopefully will last a few years.I will add the other star on at a later date if all goes well.
I bought this spade as a gift for my son’s 30th birthday as I had been bought a Spear and Jackson spade at a similar age and mine is still going strong. In years to come, when he’s still using it, I hope it will prompt many happy memories of gardens he has created, shrubs and trees he has planted for birthdays and anniversaries over time. S&J represent all that is good and enduring about British products.
My last spade broke recently. it was a bit like a sudden bereavement. I looked at a few spades, they either looked flimsy or they had that annoying “lip” on the blade to protect your shoes. Well, maybe, but it ruins the aesthetics and that is very important in a spade.
I expected to pay around 30 for this spade and was delighted it was on offer. It’s well built, it looks good, clean lines, well balanced, nice smooth connection between shaft and blade, smooth finish.
oh and it digs the ground too which is a bonus.
This is a lovely spade, well made and uses a nice ash wooden handle, in the traditional ‘Y’ shape. For me, gardening is someting I do to relax and escape the rat race at the weekend. I have always appreciated good quality tools and this is no exception. It makes digging heavy soil much easier, the blade cleans up well afterwards and I am certain this will last a long time. Amazon offered this at 50% discount AND free delivery, which was astonishing value! Very happy with my purchase, thank you Amazon.
This is a nicely balanced spade, just the right length for me though someone very tall might find it too short. The only problem is that the wood tends to split and crack (I suppose it was not pretreated). I noticed this after having the spade for just under a year, and Amazon quickly arranged a replacement. Having looked on various websites, I would recommend treating the shaft and handle with linseed oil to prevent splitting.
