Arrived promptly, reasonable case, good selection of sizes, chissels have worked very well, sharpening stone very useful (indeed essential) for keeping sharp. All positive.
Nice set. Need a little work to get them to a good level. Whetstone and oil supplied so you can start your sharpening. They will take an edge but a bit of work required on each one. Well worth the money
Good for DIY , if your in the trade buy something better/ dece
Good set of chisels but the carry box you keep them in is damaged
Came in a plastic case. In this day and age? The case won’t stand upright as the hinges are rounded where they pivot, and the case has to be laid on it’s bottom. Will the plastic crack if it falls over from being on edge?
Not used yet although the chisel edges seem sharp – but not as sharp as the Stanley ones I had for my 21st Birthday. I’m 80 now. Will they last as long I wonder.
Nice set off chisels as you would expect from Stanley
These chisels replaced my Stanley chisels bought 45 years ago. Still the same quality.
The chisels are a good quality for the price. They are OK for general woodworking.
Good chisels for home diy and having a sharpening stone in with them makes it an even better buy, I took one star off because they arrived with a scuffed case lid and chisel handles, obviously due to the way they were stored.
What’s not to like.. Nice sharp wood working chisels. Quility make, well weighted and balanced, a pleasure to use. Prefect for preparing brand new doors. Case is a bit naff, but can’t argue with the good value. Get oil & shapening stone included, not used yet but sure will do job well.
Young lad had chipped a few of my chisels hitting nails n stuff so needed to grind them back or get a new set (which he won’t be borrowing). Had a Clarke set but spotted these at 14 so thought I’d give them a try. They do the job, feel alright and the storage box is a bonus. Would recommend.
Great value , great set for those little jobs , for fixing hinges into internal doors and the fact that you can sharpen the chisels with the oil stone provided in the set.
I like thses chisels a lot. Arrived reasonably sharp but after a good sharpening on the stone provided they cut well with very little effort and seem to keep the edge.
Pros:
– low price
– comes with basic starter kit to keep sharp
– sharp enough to start
Cons:
– plastic handle
– sharp edges by the handle
A good starter set if your just getting into wood working, however the handle’s will need to be replaced after a wile of heavy usage. you mite want to file some of the sharp edges up near the handle for comfort. Also the sharping stone is only really good for ruff sharpening but won’t get hair shaving sharp.
Brand name chisel set as pictured including oil stone & oil. Not Stanley’s premium grade but ok for small jobs. Can be honed to acceptable edge if you know what your doing but the stone supplied will only get you a rough one. Good value for money overall.
Well forged and good coating on the grips mean these are effective chisels, they were on the blunt side when received though. I know they give you a sharpener but was not expecting them to be so dull. Once sharpened up they are top quality, however and a set that seems built to probably outlast me.
Great chisels for the money, found them to be decent out of the box as people were saying they were not good at all, with a bit of a sharpen they are lovely hanging doors and fitting furniture with ease. Not a bad little set although case leaves a little to be desired but for the money can you really complain, it’s not like buying a really nice set! Using with a regular hammer and the plastic handles seem very sturdy and I should think they will last year’s to come.
seem good but only time will tell . lucky it comes with a sharpening stone because they are not ready to use they are over cast on the sharp edge so will need sharpening before use , I’m a plumber/bathroom fitter so didn’t need expensive chisels as its inevitable they will be used to lift floorboards and hacking off of tiles before long , these were purchased for DIY projects around the house ….
the case seems very flimsy and guarantee this wouldn’t last long at all in the back of a va
The set arrived on one day delivery, which I am very pleased about. Like similar reviews the the carry case is sealed, however the white writing on the handles seem to be rubbed off. I suspect like similar reviewed the chisels were used, however on close look, the underside of the lid had been scratched at the same point of where the writing on the handles are. So it appears that when the box is upside down the handles are resting on it, so that would explain the writing rubbed off.
I opened the box and cannot see any imperfections with the individual chisels to my un-trained eye. I did noticed that the lacquer/polish/coating was not very uniform, but don’t know any reason for that.
Anyway, the chisels are ready to use as evidenced by the work done on my office door, I was using steel hammer with no signs of quality issues, and also the cut on my finger.
All in all a good purchase for me.
These are actually nicer than expected. Some of the reviews mentioned chipped blades and that the chisels looked used. Not for me
On arrival the blades have some kind of clear coating.. I guess to protect from rust, etc. This builds up on the edge which maybe gives the appearance of damage that’s been reported? This comes off with one or two passes on the stone.
All the chisels sharpened up to hair popping sharp in minutes. All of mine are almost perfectly flat. The 1 inch has a slight hollow on the back, but it’s very slight and doesn’t impact performance.
In use they hold an edge for a fair amount of work and then respond well to stropping with a bit of compound to restore the edge.
Very happy with these… They should give years of service.
A few reviewers have mentioned a couple of issues:-
1. The chisels arrive with scuffed printing on the handles.
Mine did too, but within a week of being in my tool bag they will be much more scuffed so doesn’t bother me.
2. That the tips of the chisels are damaged.
I doubt this is the case. Often the lacquer which protects the tools in transit will dry on the tip, just use the stone provided and it will rub off.
The only grip I have (and the reason the star is removed), is that the case is garbage – the chisels can just be thrown into a tool bag so not a problem there – but it would have been nice to have protection for the stone and oil.
Like many chisels bought on line, their sharpness is poor. You must resharpen them before use, which is not always easy and takes time. To sell them without clear instructions of “what to do before use” is a mistake.
Had a set of these for 30 years and still going strong so bought these for my son – Great mid-range chisels.
Pity oilstone is too short to use with a chisel-sharpening roller guide as they make sharpening sooooo… much easie
Bought these for my other half as he is getting into woodworking.he was so pleased with them.
I went on other people reviews as i know nothing about tools. Extremely helpfull.
Was very reasured at the fact that people have been using these particular chisels for years.
He sharpened them up using the stone and the oil and was very happy with the turn out.
Super fast delivery.
Product is excellent condition.
No nonsense chisels. Ideally suited to heavier work rather than fine paring but could be used as an all rounder.
Only minor gripes: carry case just for show; very flimsy. Chisels have flat backs making levelling a little more time consuming.
They do sharpen quickly and take a good edge. It stays there as long as any chisel with basic steel. A trade off:
Very hard steel; difficult and time consuming to sharpen but stays sharp longer. Basic steel: Easy and quick to sharpen but you have to do it more.
This method is described here very nicely:
[…]
but back to the chisels! They are sturdy and even for some rougher woodwork when you use a mallet they don’t break and keep their edge relatively well.
If you dont want to go and do the “scary sharp method” then this pack is ok (you will have to look up how to sharpen your chisels as there is no description/guide in the box) otherwise go and look for a box set without the sharpening stone and save yourself some money.
