almost exactly like my old one but it doesn’t say 12 inches like my old one it now has one foot markers not numbers but feels the same as my old one like i wanted
Good, solid and well made. Note that it’s quite chunky – the breadth of the casing adds 2.75 inches to anything being measured, but a 5m tape needs a big case to fit all that tape into.
For wife’s new shed which is at other end of garden. So when either of us working we don’t need to plod to the other end to get things and trek back. Lazy we know, but always handy. Nice feel to item.
Typical measure from stanley, does the job, locks nice, numbers and lines are bold and deep black, nice and sturdy, i use it at work on a daily and have dropped it, snagged it in aluminum louvres and caught the metal tag at the end a few times reeling in, still no damage, thats a 5* from me
I feel very grown up owning this. I know measure everything including my children. I say thinks like ‘how long is that radiator’ then whip out my tape and measure – for no good reason. Perfect if you want to feel like diy but have no talent or inclination to actually do anything apart from measure.
I love this tape measure, I take it everywhere. I’ve been house hunting, then furniture hunting and it has become my favourite possession!! The scale is great, easy to read, stays pretty straight. I minused a star as mine came slightly the damaged – the end of the tape bends at a slight angle but is still perfectly usable, and the lock could be more robust, but it does generally stay in position. As an occasional ad hoc user it’s great, but I would have a sturdier, longer one if I used this day in and day out for work.
My previous one broken after 8 yrs. When looking for a replacement didn’t realise just how expensive tape measures were! Brought this on price and the make alone. Was not disappointed. Feels well made and sturdy. The ‘lock’ feature works perfectly. Numbers are easy to read too. Thinking of getting the 8 metre version too. Highly recommend.
I bought this because I didn’t have a tape measure. Now I have one, I’ve been able to note down widths, distances, clearances and other such things that involve inches or centimetres. It’s given me an unusually boring understanding of my environment, and it doesn’t cut my fingers or do anything else that a tape measure shouldn’t do.
Those were certainly all words.
Misleading description and photos. It only has two rivets not three at the end. Some of the photos are correct but one of bit and the description is also wrong. Clearly have the products mixed up.
Good tape though, just not quite as described.
Seems to be robust – looks to be better than the metal type. It feels like a quality item. Has all the attributes of a typical quality tape rule. Its as accurate as a tape rule can be, ie if you need ‘thous’ (thousandths an inch or mm) then this isn’t the tool.
Great Father’s day gift.
Its a solid peice of kit and the mechanism works well.
Takes measurements when required and the lock is good when switched into place.
Only down side is when I’m trying to keep it stood up when taking measurements it falls over to one side.
Slightly annoying but I’m use to this little problem.
I would recommend this item.
Great for my needs, which is occasional DIY and furniture/space measuring. Only quibble is that the lock feature can be a little fiddly to work, sometimes when I want to just hold the tape the slider goes too far and does a full lock.
Can’t really complain for the price though, and for occasional use it’s not enough of a bother to be an issue.
I have had numerous tapes over the years, some of which have lasted a long time but my last tape came to an end when I extended it out to its full 7.5 metres and broke the spring. This extends out to a full 5 metres without the spring breaking and you get a clear warning notice to stop. The spring is very good not too powerful or too soft so you have to push it back in, it works very smoothly. The lock is also good in that it is locked with a definite click and does not slip loose. The markings are clear very easy to read in both imperial and metric measurements. It is the right size for me as I do not require any bigger making it easy to carry around and it clips easily but firmly to my jeans pocket. All-round excellent tape measure at a very good price, the best I have used.
These are fairly good quality as you would expect from Stanley. (but not necessarily the case always nowadays as they seem to have introduced a number of sub standard items to occupy the ‘value’ range). There is minimal give with the clip at the start of the measuring gauge, but nothing to throw your measurements out wildly. I bought these from Amazon when they were a quarter of the price at most other well known DIY stores.
This is a good little purchase for the price, it does exactly what it says on the tin and it was promptly delivered. The tape is easy to extend and retracts with no problems.
I had a previous one which this was replacing and where it does have the lock slider to stop the tape from retracting it does become a slight hassle when doing different measurements and having to unlock and lock the tape all the time. It would be nice if there was just a hold button to keep the tape in place temporarily and you can release when moving to the next measurement. There are tape measures like that but not at this price, so you get what you pay for.
Saying that, I have had no issues with this product. It’s helped me build quite a few things and allowed me to completed a few DIY projects around the home and my measurements are accurate, the only mistakes are where I didn’t measure properly ;D
Great tape, for those of us who’s eyesight aint what it used to be & also for those who just want an easier tape to read, that much wider than a standard tape makes it so easy plus the 16ft in a box that aint that much bigger than a standard tape again. ive dropped this several times now & the rubber casing over the hardened plastic really works a treat on concrete paths in the garden it just seems to be impact absorbing & dont really bounce, more of a hiccup & what was that. i do a lot of DIY in garden & workshop & its a good replacement for the old metal case 10/12ft. our son (25) had bought a Stanley Fatmax & he paid loadsa money for it but was well sick when he saw, tried & found how much i didnt pay for the 2 i bought. He’s sick, i’m Well pleased!
When you see the name Stanley you know that it’s quality made. And this tape rule is no exception.
I have had cheaper rules than this. Some even look like this one. But within a week or so of use the black control button that holds the tape in place breaks and you cant measure with it properly. The tape will also retract back at incredibly fast speeds giving you a clout on the fingers and cutting them sometimes.
Yes you can get these rules from pound shops (well not the Stanley make). But they are poorly made. The last one I got from one of those type shops, the printing on the first 12 inches of the rule smudged then came off completely all in a few weeks of use.
If and when this tape goes wrong I will be certain to by another Stanley Tape
This is a great device which is longer than a lot of tape measures and the extra length is great if you have a slightly larger house/garden. It has a sturdy catch on the spring to hold the measure in place and has a clear/well printed ruler along the edges. Seems good quality metal and can support its own weight in most situations if you balance it carefully. I removed one star as it is quite hard to know exactly where the end of the tape measure is, i.e. the metal catch wobbles around a little bit so I imagine the ruler is either a few mm too short or too long. If you measure this once though then you can adjust if it is slightly out and hence easy to recommend.
This was purchased to replace one that was lost. It is well made and chunky. The tape is a good width and does not bend particularly easily. The divisions are clearly marked and easy to read in both centimetres and inches. The spring appears strong but does not remove your fingers! (The edges of the tape are not too sharp either!) It is easy to use and the lock is effective. The rubber surround does help it to “bounce” if it is dropped and it is still working fine after a few mishaps. I would like it to have a little more “yellow” on the casing to make finding it easier. i have arthritic fingers and I did find it difficult to remove from the packaging when it arrived but there have been no problems at all in use. I am very happy with the purchase.
Always used my dad’s Stanley tape measure when I was growing up, and never found another brand with quite as good quality. This isn’t the exact same model I grew up using, but that one’s looking a bit tatty now for being dropped quite so many times, so I thought this rubber-wrapped model might get an even better lifespan (even if the old one hasn’t quite given up yet!) Obviously I’ve only just had this tape, so there’s not much I can say about reliability over time, but giving it a good look over, it’s everything you’d expect at first glance; it’s tough-feeling, really chunky. Definitely looks tough enough to live in the tool box/ get dropped off a few ladders. The tape’s a good standard width (18mm I think it said on the pack). It also said on the packaging that the tape is coated with what is essentially a thin layer of tough plastic film, intended to prevent the printed numbers getting scraped off too soon. Not sure if this was on the old Stanley tape, but it’s nice to know they’ve intended it for long-term use. The printing is good quality, large font so it’s easy enough to read in low light/ at arm’s length. Until I try it out for a while, I won’t know for sure how it’ll last, but the tough, good-quality feel of it inspires confidence, and that on top of the Stanley brand would have me happily betting that I’ll be using this tape for a good many years.
