This game has been one of our favourites.
There are a lot of elements to the set up and it can take a while to get your head around. But once playing, it’s really interesting and a fun game to play that gets everyone involved.
One of the best bord games i have ever played. Very well made. Definitely worth the money.
Really good! Played this at a games cafe and we all loved it so had to buy i
Definitely one of the best board games i ever played. Requires some figuring out but that can also be fun. Can be enjoyed by two players and it does not take away from complexity and enjoyment of the game.
Played this for the first time this week.
I was so impressed I had to buy it.
A great game, superb mechanics and relatively easy to learn, yet so many levels to play with.
The game I played had some extra flourishes with some custom meeples. Something I may look to acquire in the future.
I love Terraforming Mars, Scythe and games with an engine. This has similarities in that vein.
Can’t recommend it enough. Oh, and you learn about ornithology along the way.
A good fun game that is easy to learn and three more expansions to add with different ways to play
This is a beautiful board game – the art on the cards is stunning and the pieces within it are well made and feel satisfying to use and hold.
Gameplay is great and it is relatively straightforward for learn. It includes a play through for the first few turns to help demonstrate the game to new players if needed.
There is some imbalance with the gameplay at times as some bird cards are significantly better than others, but there are lots of bird cards available that mitigates that somewhat.
Overall though, the attention to detail in creating this game is brilliant – even down to the fact that include about each bird!
Learning takes sometime but it is very fun once you used to.
My family love this game, we all have our own sets so have bought multi times.
I had played this game before purchasing and I did need help initially playing the game. But, playing with other board games they loved it and eventually bought an expansion to this game
I found this boardgame fun, easy to learn and play. Each round would take around 30-40 min for 2 people. I always learn something new about birds when playing because the cards have “fun facts” about the species on them. This is one of my favorites boardgames, very beautiful and well thought.
Really interesting game with beautiful artwork. It does take some time to get familiar with how the game works and how you score but once you understand it’s a clever strategy game. There are different ways to play the game and a version to play on your own. Beware it can take a long time to finish the game especially when you’re learning the game, so prepare lots of time.
bought as a gift but now I want one for myself 🙂
The game has a lot of different aspects to it which seemed daunting at first, however the premise is quite simple – to win, you need to have the most points by the end of the 4th round. It’s a fun game and is visually very pleasing, with some bird facts thrown in. I’d suggest watching a video and learning as you play rather than reading all the rules first.
The rules are not complicated, the player mats make turn actions very easy to follow. The art is beautiful and the components are of a very high quality. The game plays with good pace once everyone knows what to do and the overall mechanism is very satisfying. I was put off this game for a long time because I thought the bird theme would be really boring and not my thing but I was very wrong. The theme actually complements the gameplay really well and doesn’t feel dry or boring at all.
It’s rare that a totally unique game comes along. Well this is probably not ‘totally’ unique, think monopoly with wings and bird houses but it’s definitely so far removed as to make it a really interesting and compulsive game. Excellent value too IMO
This is an enjoyable rules lite game and a great introduction to modern board games for newcomers. The components are top notch, quick setup, the game doesn’t drag out and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular.
My only criticism is luck plays a sizeable role and doubly so in the included solo automa.
Love the base game and it’s style.
As a European it’s nice to see more familiar birds the deck. The extra powers add some more gameplay options however nothing huge changes, so it’s very easy to adapt if you know the base game.
You do end up with loads of cards but it still fits in the box, just!
After the first play this turned into my favourite game. I watched a YouTube video and read the instructions on hoe to play as it appears complex at first but once you get it, it’s logical and fun. The fane is different to other games I played before due to its set up of everyone having their own board. Plus they put a lot of work into to aesthetics. I can play it for hours and love reading the facts about the birds.
I thought this was a bit expensive but we have honestly enjoyed playing the game. It’s one of our favourites – we love birds too so it’s a win win!
It’s a great game for all including 7-10 year olds who join in with the family – easy for the children to learn as well.
The artwork for this game is beautiful. It is complicated to set up and to learn, however there are some new starter packs to help get you going which are useful.
Once the game is learned though, it’s great.
Takes about 5 mins to set up and 2 people end up playing for around 45-60mins.
We love it.
Me and my partner have been playing Wingspan since we received it last November and we love it. We play 2, 3 times a week.
We also bought the European and Oceania expansions which make the gaming even more balanced and exciting. You can play more birds!
We like it because it invites players to help each other and offers to play actions which benefit to all players. This is really positive and healthy.
Also it elevates. We learned so much about birds and they are so beautiful!
I bought this for my stepdad as a Christmas present and we have been playing it nonstop since he opened it yesterday! We did have to watch the video linked on the back of the instruction book rather than reading the rules as they’re very dense. But the video was great and clearly explained how to set up and play. Halfway through the first game everything because clear and the game is actually very simple and enjoyable. While still competitive there’s not sabotage or anything feeling personal in the competition like other board games. There have been no arguments!
While simple to understand the gameplay is complex and massively replay-able.
The quality of the game is amazing as well. Even the instruction booklets are high quality paper. The cards of birds are gorgeous and everything is very nicely made. The only lower quality thing is the card box which is a fairly thin plastic and I could predict it cracking with rough handling. But for the quality of the things that are handled more often through the game it’s a fair sacrifice.
Overall I’m really happy with my choice to buy this as a present!
Note: There is a very well made software version of this game available on PC, iOS and Android for a much lower price than the physical edition if you’re just looking to try it out, or maybe get a tutorial. Well worth a peep.
Wingspan is a fairly straightforward engine building game in which you play birds into a choice of habitats (woodlands, grasslands, and wetlands) for points which are all counted up at the end of the game to decide the victor. Each bird has its own special effect, which over the course of the game combine with the effects of other adjacent birds to create large combos to more efficiently gather food, eggs and more bird cards to play. The first few turns don’t feel particularly rewarding, but as your arrangement fills up, it creates a satisfying system of synergies – “I will do this, which gets me this, and this too, and because of that, I can do this and that and get these as well.”
While this is undeniably fun, it’s not particularly competitive. Some may relish the chilled layback nature of just playing their own little game on their own board which is almost entirely self contained (with just a few small exceptions) and just comparing at the end who did the best, whereas others will lament that lack of direct interactivity with other players. This isn’t a game for those that relish sabotaging other players around them as much as possible.
The games components are really quite lovely. Little food tokens that have their own little lidded tubs to keep them in, dinky colourful eggs that look like they should contain chocolate (but don’t!), and a nice container to keep all the cards in, but the real pice de rsistance has to be the little dice rolling tower in the shape of a little wooden bird house. It’s a really nice touch that makes the whole game feel very classy. Neat as a pin all around!
In terms of strategy and balance. I have very little negative to say. Because high scores can be achieved in a number of different ways, players are very rarely in a position where they were doomed from the start, destined to fail. It CAN absolutely still happen, but the elegant design allows you to circumnavigate those obstacles most of the time. In the approx 30 games I’ve played so far, I’ve only had a fully fledged starting fail 2 or 3 times max. If you pivot your original strategy soon enough, you can nearly always come out with a respectable score at the very least.
So yes, all in all I heartily recommend Wingspan. It’s really quite straightforward once you’ve played a game or two, and works quite well in a more social gaming session, allowing people to just chat and have fun without having to spend the entire time obsessing over what everyone else is doing. It’s lovely to look at, easy to set up and pack away and is very replayable. Good stuff!
I wasn’t expecting much from the game Wingspan, the topic isn’t really my thing. It was bought as a present for my wife.
After the first game, we were both hooked.
This expansion was bought primarily because we live in Europe and fancied having more birds we recognised in the game.
The new powers, bonuses and goals add a little extra complexity to the game but not too much.
Looking forward to getting my hands on the Oceania expansion next.
I bought this game based on a top 20 game list I read. I was unsure about the price but as it seemed a lot for a board game but it is worth it! We played through the example four rounds and it seemed like a lot to take in but by move four we got it and quickly found it was easy to get the hang of. We absolutely love it. You do need a big table space as lots of bit and a board per player. Another family favourite game.
It took a little while to get used to the game rules. I would recommend you look at the short available video first to get to understand the basics. After that a read through of the easy to follow instructions sets you on your way. After 3 or 4 games I found that I had a full understanding of everything. Although I’ve only had the game a few weeks a demonstration how enjoyable it is is the fact I’ve played it many times. Another bonus is that each game can be played in a relatively short time – an hour or less. Overall well recommended.
Absolutely fantastic game. Such a strange concept but very clever mechanics. I was very sceptical about playing a boardgame about birds if I’m honest but I was pleasantly surprised. We’ve found it addictive.
Simple mechanics once you play a couple of times but it’s challenging to score high points, so it really gets you thinking.
Every game is completely different.
Overall, this is definitely a 5 star review. Such a classy game appearance and mostly good quality playing mats and pieces, and lovely artwork.
The only 2 complaints I had were:
– the birdhouse dice roller is poor quality and easily broke after first use. The roof doesn’t fit as it should, and it’s not very sturdy. Would have been better if this was a collapsible, ready made plastic model. For the price of the game, I would have expected better quality for a game piece which is used so frequently.
– we only received 4 plastic containers for the 5 lots of food tokens. Again, for the price of the game I would have expected better.
However, these 2 points didn’t hugely impact the quality of the game but I thought them worth noting.
Would highly recommend to all boardgame lovers!
This game is well made with great information about the Birds. Once reading the instructions and watching a uTube video on how to play we have found it quite simple to play.
After playing this game a couple of times each member of my family has different strategy’s of how they will win. Its great that you don’t need to make another player feel bad or picked on to win.
Each of the birds have different bonus plays that either gain you something as you play them or as they get activated later in the game. These bonuses can also help other players.
We have played this game multiple times since Christmas and i believe that it will be played again and again through 2020.
