I gave this gift to my fianc because he loves pillars of the earth books. He enjoyed the subtle tie ins into the book. I enjoyed the game having no knowledge of the books. It’s pretty easy to learn, just follow the steps directly and it helps you play just fine. Lots of replay value too!
I bought this game as a fan of the book and mini-series. I haven’t played it yet, although I have read the rules – It seems like the sort of game that I would have a better understanding once I start playing it (I’ve played worker placement strategy games before, which will probably help.) My pleasant surprise was that the game included small gift from the seller (Rockin’ B Games). I little baggie of a 6 sided die and some candies, along with their business card, thanking the buyer for their support. A nice touch and it made me smile!
Overall I like the game. Fun to play. I would like less random master builder selection. The game has potential to be 5 player by adding a few more placement spaces on the board and for playing with less than 4 think that some spaces should be removed to give more incentive to pay to use builders and higher need for the space to go first next round.
Have read The Pillars of the Earth many, many times. The game really has nothing to do with the book, but still enjoy this style of game. It took us a long time to read through the instructions, but once we started to play the game I thought it was great fun.
This was my first worker placement game. I’ve seen it referred to as the quintessential game with that mechanic that everyone should have on their shelf and I agree. It plays great at 3-4 players. I’ve heard it’s a little flawed at 2 players but have never played it that way. The instructions are really well done. The coolest thing about them is they tell you to set the game up and then just sorta start playing and read as you go. I think that is a great way to “teach” a game. I highly recommend it.
A great classic finally reprinted. This game is a wonderful worker placement game and a good pick for just about any gamer. It’s been out of print for years and I’m happy to finally have it in my collection. Well done Kosmos.
Amazing game!! If you are into board games and especially into woker placement mechanic, this is a must have. The board is the most beautiful board I’ve seen. A must have for its uniqueness and repeatability.
