This game made you feel like you were watching a movie. I love how long it took and it wasn’t a 20-30min game. We had SO MUCH FUN playing the game and figuring it out. Perfect balance of everything. I wish there were a million more of these I’d buy them ALL!!!!!
Someone put a lot of thought and care into this game. The fun puzzles, great storyline and nostalgic characters made for a very fun 4 hours. We had players ranging from 5 to 10 assisting and they were all able to find a way to contribute.
Whoever designed this game is a genius. It is SO smart and SO much fun – a really brilliantly well planned story that we solved over two nights. I only wish you could play it more than once, but I’m looking forward to gifting this to some friends with kids so that they can have as much fun with it as we did.
It took about 5 hours for my friend and I to complete and that was using many of the hints. Admittedly, neither I nor my friend are very good at these style games. We both really enjoyed it. Game play mechanics were much better than the other escape games we’ve tried. The quality of the game pieces is very high.
This game was filled with a lot of thought. it’s easy to learn and start play right away. i enjoyed it fro. the first second i started reading the opening segment!!! each character has different abilities and interact with things differently and puzzles clever but not that hard. and the exploration part in the game is very much to my taste!
i wish they would make more games!
I played this with my two daughters, ages 24 and 29. It is rated medium difficulty and estimated play time is 60-90 minutes. It took us around 3 hours, with a few interruptions. It was our first escape room board game, so that includes reading all the rules. It was a challenge for us, but we really enjoyed it. Too bad you can only play it once, since the culprit doesn’t change on a second play through. I would definitely recommend if you are a Scooby-Doo fan.
We have tried escape room games in the past and were never big fans, but we (2 adults, 13 year old, and 11 year old) enjoyed this so much. It was really interactive, with a book for each character so when you choose to, for example, smell the refrigerator using Scooby, then someone looks up the clue combination using the Scooby character book and reads it to the group. It was easy to keep everyone equally involved and engaged. The difficulty was perfect. We were mixed on our guess of the answer, half the group was correct. We also ate multiple scooby snacks ( meaning we made mistakes) so we did not ace it but were never frustrated and ready to quit. I really wish there were more of these. I would buy them all!
Our family really enjoyed this adventure. It was like experiencing an episode of Scooby Doo. Our whole family had so much fun figuring out clues and advancing on throughout the haunted mansion. Our kids aged 9 through 16 all had a blast, including my husband and I. It would make for a long game in one sitting but it’s cleverly broken up into two chapters so you can complete chapter one and then come back for chapter two days or weeks later. Although, you won’t want to wait that long. The whole game was cleverly designed and had the authentic Mystery, Inc feel to it. Great family activity and brain stimulating as well. Not too hard and not too easy. We hope they come out with another one!
If you enjoy escape rooms it’s a good pick up. The clues and tasks are fun – except I must add the ending part is just not so straight forward.
No spoilers – but there are 2 parts where you totally need clues to help move forward.
It’s a couple of hours of fun for the most part.
It is suitable for a young child who can read. The quality of the materials were good and the game play is very well thought out. It is reminiscent of old PC adventure game where you have to interact in multiple ways with the same object. Would recommend it to others
This is a great game. Our whole family played it together and we really enjoyed fing the clues and taking turns reading the information to solve the mystery. I would say younger children could use the game pieces to make up their own stories.
One suggestion I have is the reveal should be in the last envelop as looking through the cards someone might see more information than they should.
My family really enjoyed this “escape room” type of game with a fun scooby vibe. The mechanics of exploring and uncovering things using look-up codes was a great solution, in my opinion. I also thought this was a great merger of IP (scooby) with format. The characters really added something to the gameplay. I also loved that you could stop at the halfway point. The final mystery solution was out of left field (for us) so I took off a star because I didn’t feel like the game design stuck the landing. If your family likes scooby and puzzle games, this is a winner!
This is a one time play “escape room” style game. Even though it is meant to be played only once, it is worth it. Unlike other escape room games which may have a “theme” this one not only has a theme, it has a story line and characters and part of the game is to solve a mystery. It is not too difficult and can definitely be played with younger kids. Scooby-doo fans will, obviously, like it. Escape room in a box game fans will too. My wife, kids and I have done many of those and we all agree this was the best so far. We also liked some of the Exit series and the Think Fun series, but this one was our favorite so far. Unlike the Exit series, the Scooby-Doo one can be repackaged and played again, so you can give it to someone else to play. (The Think Fun games are that way also.)
We had a blast playing as the Mystery Inc gang exploring the mansion, solving puzzles & gathering clues. The game is very easy to learn. We enjoyed how varied the puzzles were and that nothing was bent or cut, so the game could be passed on. The only downside was having to flip between the 5 character books, which became cumbersome. I would have preferred the option of using an online companion app similar to those used in the Kosmos and Thames Adventure Games series.
Otherwise, this is a great game. I hope Scooby-doo Escape from the Haunted Mansion gets a sequel!
We had a lot of fun with this game. My fiance LOOOOVES scooby doo, and we enjoy the scooby betrayal as well. Yes, scooby-themed games are more geared toward children, and we’re 25. BUT this game is well thought out, fun, and not super easy. The only problem we had was the damn frame, so if anyone knows how to use it, let me know lol. Anyway, it is what it says it is, and the quality of the pieces is pretty decent.
Definitely a good gift, something to do for a game night. We can even just pack it up and regift it (since you can’t play twice, only downside to these games). We’re looking to buy more Coded Chronicles games now!
After hours of game play, we get towards the very end and discover that we received 2 secret envelope 7s and no secret envelope 8. That is the final component to solving the mystery. So frustrating! It was a fun game that came to an abrupt halt at the best part. Check to make sure that you have 8 secret envelopes, 13 map tiles, 60 clue cards, 5 narrative books, a chapter 2 envelope, 5 character standees, and a mystery manual before starting the game. We did, but counted instead of looking closely at the envelope numbers marked on the front.
