Son needed more storage for his PS5 games so he didn’t have to keep uninstalling them.
This is perfect, with 5TB he can keep lots of games on it.
Really easy to use.
i got it for my xbox series x and needed extra storage i am really pleased with it seems well made works just as well as the Seagate from Microsoft which is good for competition and better price
Great ssd to free up space, 100gb (1 game) took 2 mins to transfer and that’s fine with me. And delivery was super quick.
Very pleased with this purchase, although spinning disks are still expensive (I paid 169 for this drive). I needed to obtain a fast USB drive for PC backups. I have not tested this on a console.
The kit is well built and looks Ok if you want it on display. The case has a cooling fan as the drive does get a little warm, but you can’t hear the fan. There are two USB ports on the rear to charge phones, etc. Mine contains a HGST HUS728T8TALE6L4 drive which is a “WD Ultrastar HC320 Data Centre Drive”. And its fast hitting over 260MB/s over USB3.0.
Looks high quality and durable and load times are decent as well. Will def recommend.
The 4TB hard drive is a powerful and versatile storage device that provides ample space for storing large amounts of data. With its massive storage capacity, it is an excellent option for individuals and businesses that require a significant amount of storage for their data.
One of the most significant advantages of the 4TB hard drive is its large storage capacity, which can store up to 4 terabytes of data. This makes it an excellent option for individuals and businesses that need to store large amounts of data, such as videos, music, and photos. It can also be used for backing up important files, which is crucial for protecting against data loss.
In addition to its large storage capacity, the 4TB hard drive is also fast and reliable. It provides high-speed data transfer rates, which means that large files can be transferred quickly and efficiently. It is also designed to be durable and reliable, which means that it can withstand the wear and tear of regular use and will continue to perform reliably over time.
One potential downside of the 4TB hard drive is its relatively high price compared to smaller-capacity drives. However, the cost per terabyte is typically lower for larger-capacity drives, which means that the 4TB hard drive may be a more cost-effective option in the long run for those who require a significant amount of storage.
Overall, the 4TB hard drive is a powerful and reliable storage device that provides ample space for storing large amounts of data. Its large storage capacity, high-speed data transfer rates, and durability make it an excellent option for individuals and businesses that need to store and access large amounts of data
Does what it says used for gaming only issue is Xbox pc app does not like installing to external hdd
10.9 is what you get so don’t whinge when you see its not 12 🙂
This is normal
great for storage, massive
The read speed is fast but the write speed is slow. For playing games the read speed is what matters, so if the P50 is too expensive then the slow write speed of the P40 is an ok compromise. Just don’t expect the write speed to be impressive when moving a lot of data. The pulsing rainbow LEDs are a bit annoying, but some black tape will solve that. Overall the P50 is a better SSD if you can get it for a good price.
It took just 11 minutes to transfer 67.505gb of games and six quick and easy to for setup and has a nice and easy to understand booklet on what to do for PS5, Xbox series x/s and pc with no power cable for the external hard drive and is very quie
While you can get some for a bit cheaper, this is very reliable, extremely small, can literally fit into your pocket, and is quick to transfer games back & forth which if you’re on Xbox series x|s? You will be doing a lot. Like I mean a lot.
For example, gears of war 5 takes a rounds 30 minutes to transfer over or to transfer back onto the external memory.
Battlefield 5/battlefront 2 (both very large games) take roughly that.
Red dead redemption 2 around 115gb takes about 30 ish minutes as well. Sometimes 35, but still. Beats downloading by miles.
Honestly, I’d recommend, and for peace of mind, as hard drives can have issues, I’d buy the added insurance.
The storage itself is ok but it was suppose to come with a code for free 1 month subscription for xbox ultimate. It was an expired code.
Seems to do the job ..needed extra ssd memory as I only had 256 gb installed, and modern games taking evermore memory ( red dead redemption 115gb) an external ssd fitted the bill with 1 tb memory.
Working well upto know ,it does get a little warm but it’s tobe expected.
I understood that I wasn’t going to get exactly 5TB due to the number of bytes and bits, etc. However, to be a whole 1/10 less capacity than I thought is disappointing. You can see from the image that there is 5 trillion bytes but just be aware that if you need to backup nearly 5TB of data, this drive is not big enough.
Used for a XBSX some games with the SX logo will work without moving them to internal or expansion card. Halo M.C.C, & Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Assassin Creed Origins & Oddessy, & Skyrim, & shadow of the tomb raider, Far Cry 5 anniversary, Ori 2, will update if I find anymore
Thanks Simon J Stuart for your Review here read every Word & its True The Thing here gave Me Creeps in Night while i was Formatting it & PAused it, i have had had nothing but Problems really Disastrous Ones with WDC | Seagate is Working GooD but i think Hitachi really has never Disappointed Me for All these Years! Active Cooling Block Don’t know about that to be Honest its just a Product Designed so Well that makes you Wanna Buy it! Its Really Unfortunate What happenned to your Unit but i with All My Experience & Failures have been Watching / Observing this Thing | So FAr Performance is Okay Except for that Noise, All Tests of Mine seem Successful
HD 2TB I’m really impressed about it’s second I bought, we are using as game storage for PS5 it’s way cheaper then internal SSD, you just transfer the games no problem at all, much better faster than downloading the games every time when short on PS5 storage! Highly recommended to save few $
Drive was not feeling very fast, done a crystaldiskmark test and I got 92mb/s (should be at least 125mb/s).
I run userbenchmark and I get performing way bellow expectations, operating at USB 3.1 speed (no idea why and that is why I thought to test with other cables and at another PC)
I have used it and benchmarked it in two different PC’s both with USB 3.2 ports, I have used different cables but results are always the same. Quick google search revealed am not the only one with same issue.
*** I’ve deleted partition and reformatted the drive, copied back the data and now am getting SEQ1M Q8TI 113mb/s Read and 107 mb/s Write. Searching online found out that drives almost full seem to slow down and maybe deleting and recopying the data had an effect similar to defragmenting that speeded up the drive (am no expert, just a theory) ***
This is a good product for people with a massive game library. I have used it to store over 20 games downloaded through steam. Also use it for storing films as well. My one complaint would be that the interfeace isnt type c.
A great little hub for docking my laptop, I can’t complain about performance or price. However I can’t why out why it is always so hot. I have the driveless version and it’s always hot like a radiator even when the computer is asleep. I keep disconnecting when not using to try and save energy.
I hate these mixed-up reviews – for clarity this is for a 5TB Western Digital Black P10 external 2.5″ drive.
I purchased this at a discounted price during a WD global sale, it is frankly staggering value for money. Albeit it’s an ‘old’ mechanical drive, rather than a solid-state affair. I needed some sizable space to be able to reorganize some pretty huge files, it’s great for the job.
WD quote the drive at ‘up to 140MB/s’ – which is fair, I’ve managed consistent 130MB/s sequential reads and over 120MB/s sequential writes. Small file random IO sees these rates drop like a stone as you would expect. But all in all it does well for a drive that is spinning at a reported 4800RPM.
It is a little power-hungry, it certainly wasn’t happy sharing USB power in my (non-powered) hub with other drives, but given it’s own USB port it is more than happy.
So far so good.. It definitely looks the part.. Smaller than i expected it to be, as you can see it fits in my hand.. Thats a positive though.. iv not hooked it up or used it yet, but will edit my review as time goes on.. I did get 4yr warranty just to be safe, but hopefully this is the one..
Bought the 5tb version to use with my RPI 4, I’m replacing a 1tb drive with usb adapter to with the 5tb gaming drive. I reformatted and use the drive in conjunction with open media vault and docker. No issues with drive, noise and heat minimal. No clicking as reported by some however mine is powered by a hub but previously the 1tb was powered by the pi. Im using a hub so I can mirror the 1tb LVM to a 1tb partition on the 5tb drive
Update 03/10/2022: The drive has been returned to WD due to sector fails and ended with the drive being unreadable. Drive was sent back as RMA 3 weeks ago, so far no replacement sent however Ihad confirmation they received the drive
UPDATE 07/08/2022: The drive has had a lot of use 2000+ hours, and it has performed well. I changed my setup and moved away from the RPI4 and am now using a HP 800 G2 Mini I5-5500T which is giving me more bang for buck and I am getting better USB3 speeds, my system is built on proxmox with omv openmediavault virtualised in a VM, and the 5TB USB drive is used to hold media on a ZFS filesystem. I have recently started getting issues with read errors on one sector, this is under investigation to see whether its an actual disk fault or an issue with USB maybe dropping and causing a write issue. So far its only one sector.
The drive isn’t noisy the current temp is 51c according to smartd.
I Purchased this HDD for extra storage for my PS5 to put all the games I’m not currently playing on it so its not taking up space on the internal ps5 since I cant afford to pay 700 to 900 for an SSD to put in there, And it does the business very well I must say, the only reason why its not 5 stars is because sometimes it gives the ps5 some connectivity issues and it asks me to format the drive but unplugging and plugging it back in solves the issues, overall I am pleased.
My xbox will not let me play titles such as Rainbow Six Siege or Microsoft flight simulator as when trying to install them it states “Newer games need faster storage” meaning I can still install the game onto the external SSD but I cannot play the game without moving it onto the Internal SSD. I bought the Series S and this SSD thinking I could have more storage for cheaper because I couldn’t afford the Xbox Series X but I cannot play newer games off of this External SSD. It plays older games fine but games optimised for the Series S/X will not run and you will have to move them to the Xbox’s Internal SSD storage. However, some games run off of the External SSD such as: Rocket League and Halo: MCC. As for other games I’m not too sure. Just a warning in case you’re thinking of doing what I did.
I was using a 2TB drive for my PS5 external storage which I had originally been using with my laptop, but with the size of games it quickly filled up, so if I wanted to play a new game I had to delete one and download the game I wish to play which could take several hours.
I have now downloaded all my PS5 and PS4 games onto this drive and moved a couple from internal storage over to this drive which frees up space on my internal storage.
To play PS5 games stored on this drive you do have to move them to internal storage which only takes a few minutes compared to several hours it would take to download them, PS4 games can be played directly from this hard drive which I do and they play great with no issues.
If your after external storage for your PS5 this does the trick, as this is the 8TB model the drive spins at 7200 rpm, but 5TB or less drive spins at 5500rpm which will give slower transfer speeds but will still be ok.
So I bought the 5TB version of the drive as it was on a Black Friday deal.
Just arrived, plugged it in to use it and low and behold, it holds 4.5TB of storage space rather than the 5TB that I bought it for!
Missleading.
This is a drive that has not been used at all. A fresh clean drive with nothing on it and I get this.
Kinda disapointed really. I hope W.D can respond to this and care to explain why.
If you advertise something, you have to SELL what you are giving.
This is actually a prosicutable offense of false advertising.
While waiting for the PS5 to unlock the storage drive I needed extra storage.
This works great to store all my PS4 games on and means I can directly play them off this drive. Drive is fast and I have noticed no difference in speed of loading from when I used to play them on PS4 so happy with that although obviously not as quick as when stored on the internal PS5 drive as expected.
The second drive has now been opened up so once amazon have stock of my SSD I will be installing that in the PS5 but due to the cost of the drives I have gone for a 2TB even though it can support 4TB so I may keep this plugged in so I can use for PS4 games without filling the PS5 storage space.
Overall great buy to increase storage on PS4 or PS5.
I stuck one of these (I actually ordered two and an 8TB Drive for backup) in my ROG Crosshair VIII Formula board and in a fit of desire for more new toys ordered one the next day for my ROG Crosshair VIII Hero too as you can’t buy just the one for children as it just upsets the other. In this case both were upset as it simply didn’t work due to the on-going issues with the Asus BIOSs in their X570 boards. How do I know you ask? Well, I stuck it in my MSI Edge X570 and it worked fine but slower as I only have the X4 slot free. It did not work in the Asus’s X4 slot incase you were wondering. If you are going to buy an x570 board then pay yer money and get the Godlike or the bang for the buck Tomahawk. Asus really do need to get their finger out with the BIOS – the only thing saving them is the fact the Godlike is so expensive. MSI – drop the price by 200 and you’ll sell loads of ’em.
My only draw back is when I turn on my comp it wont boot and I’ve even turned off in the bios booting from usb as an option. I probably need to research more to correct his but Im lazy and I dont care.
If I had of know I could stick one of these bad boys into my motherboards usb 3 port and it preform the way it does I would of bought one years ago. I got it about a week ago after looking ad ssd drives (already have an ssd as main HD) and mulling over costs vs a larger internal sata drive and happened on discussions about if usb 3 drives can handle game storage. I was personally caught up in the misunderstanding that you cant play games from an external hard drive, not to mention thinking you could would have people in the know laugh at you.
I’ve since installed two terrabytes of games from my steam account and epic account onto this drive. The only difference I have noted between my main SSD drive and this is that steam installs take a little while longer allocating space, but once done game downloads installed at 5mb a sec, which to be fair to this drive was the max my internet could download at, so not sure if it goes faster..
Either way, Ive spent weeks installing all the massive data games out of my accounts onto this drive and not had a single problem running any of them. No longer do I need to decide what I should delete so I can try something new. Now, I can have it all!
Erm, awesome drive. I regret the last few years making decisions about what I should delete so I can install something new. If only I had of know that a few quid could of given me so much freedom!!
It has a decent capacity of about 7.5Tb and not the full 8Tb advertised(as a lot of space is used up for the file system on mechanical hard drives in general so you very rarely get the full capacity advertised) for the price and works very well with the PS4 PRO and on the whole has decent access speeds tho on occasion it does seem to be a bit slow. This is probably to do with the 10 second spin up time which does make loading a little slow at times during gaming. Tho game loading is fairly quick when you load up a game from the Home Screen. The drive does run quite warm during busy times when gaming so I would recommend that the drive is placed in a well ventilated place so as to allow heat to naturally dissipate and definitely ensure that the fan at the back of the drive has a clear path to expel the build up of heat. The drive is extremely easy to set up and is formatted for the PS4 very quickly. It is definitely worth the money tho it will run considerably slower than a solid state hard Drives as will all mechanical drives so there is a trade off between storage space and read, write, access times. Also if you choose a solid state hard drive you are currently limited to 2Tb and will very likely pay 200 or more and the faster the drive the more expensive they are generally. Also to really get the benefit of the speed of solid state hard drives you would need to replace the PS4 internal drive with a solid state hard Drive and then you have the problem of downloading the PS4 operating system on to the drive prior to or during replacement which can be very problematic. Hence why mechanical External hard Drives are very popular with the PS4 as generally the storage space of the internal hard drive is much smaller than required for most gamers, so external hard Drives are a almost a must have item as it allows you to have comprehensive access to many years of games overtime and not be forced into deleting and installing games which is very time consuming. Also the hard drives is not fully silent and you can hear it running faintly in the background especially during times when you are not gaming which is probably the downside of having a hard drive which spins faster than standard mechanical hard drives tho I think it is a trade off which is worth it in my opinion.
A great external storage unit for Playstation4/5. After moving to PlayStation 5 I needed a bigger drive to hold all my PS4 games. 8TB is the maximum allowed for the console and it should be more than enough! The only issue is that it’s very loud when reading and writing data, if not hidden behind a door in a TV cabinet – it might become a nuisance unless you have TV loud.
The drive itself is of very high quality and it obviously contains a NAS grade hard drive, I am yet to be convinced about how efficient the small ‘cooling fan’ inside the unit is, but there are vents on the casing to keep the drive cool.
Two things you need to be aware of if you buy the WD_Black D10 12TB hard drive.
The storage is in fact 10.9TB, not 12TB as advertised. This is because they incorrectly state that there are 1,000,000,000,000 bytes that make up 1TB storage. In fact 1 TB storage equals 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. As a result you are are left with substantially less storage space than advertised.
Second point to make, and this is important for XBox Series X users, this hard drive is currently not 100% compatible with the XBox Series X. For it to work properly (and to prevent your console crashing at start-up or when restarting) I recommend that you only plug the hard drive in after the initial boot-up is complete. I would also recommend disconnecting the hard drive before attempting to restart the XBox Series X or installing any updates to the operating system. At this moment in time, any attempt to re-boot the console with the hard drive plugged in causes the console to freeze on start-up, forcing you to to initiate a hard shut-down. I find this a problem purely with the D10 12TB hard drive as I get no issues with the Seagate 8TB hub when plugged in to the console. This leads me to believe that there is a driver issue with the D10 that needs to be fixed for the XBox Series X. At this moment in time if you have this hard drive plugged in while performing a system update on your XBox Series X, I have real concerns that this could lead to your console being bricked.
When it does work, the hard drive is fast (certainly faster than my old 8TB hub which is beginning to show wear and tear). However I would recommend holding off buying the D10 if you were planning to use it for the XBox Series X at least until the issue has been properly patched on the console.
Update: 19th January 2021
After reporting my concerns regarding the compatibility issues with the 12TB drive to both Microsoft and Western Digital in December, Microsoft released a new operating system update for the XBox Series X last week which has now resolved the issue. Users should have no problem now keeping their drive plugged into their console when rebooting or when initially booting up their console. Wester Digital help desk indicated that they received no similar reports before mine, so it’s important to let them know as soon as you get an issue.
OK, a great product but with drawbacks.
Good: 12TB of fast storage supplied by award winning WD Black drive. It clocked up to 250Mbs on the transfer replacing the USB powered Samsung I had on my XBOX One X which maxed out at 125Mbs.
Good: Reduced to sub 200 and 3 months Xbox Ultimate Game pass included price this at little over 15 per TB and enough storage for the next gen of gaming.
Good and bad: Power supply rather than USB Powered. Includes 2x 7.5W USB Charging ports but means this is always on. Good and bad right!?
Good and bad: This thing is always on unless you unplug it. If you don’t have your Xbox on FULL OFF this drive will grind away often while your console is on standby. The power light is white, not too bright and slowly pulses away. This always on drive state make response times amazing but there is no power management it seems.
Good and bad: Fan not loud (some people complain they don’t hear it) but drive grinds/reads can be heard when its quiet. Louder than my other drives.
Best external gaming drive there is unless you step up to SSD at 5x the price 1/5th capacity.
Perfect and super fast. Good value for money compared to current ssd costs. This is about 50-25% slower than most ssd and at a fraction of the costs. Good investme
It’s too early to tell how reliable this drive will be. This Wester Digital drive is connect to a computer alongside a Seagate Desktop 10TB drive, so I’ll give a comparison.
Both drives are noisy, but this Western Digital is a little noisier and slower.
The drive stops after some time of inactivity. Only time will tell how this affects its lifetime, but I would expect all this stop/start is not a good thing. It takes about 10 seconds to start up and begin to return data when a read request is made.
It has a fan and 2 USB connectors at the back, but I don’t care about this feature and haven’t used the USB ports.
I’m reasonably happy with the drive.
I was advised to buy this drive by a techy friend to replace my art storage drives which were beginning to fail. As a designer who works primarily digitally I generally have very large file size work, and masses of it, so having a reliable drive is very important. This drive was recommenced as a combination of drive size, brand name and price – even though it appears to be primarily marketed as a gaming drive,
I am a Mac user, and so far this drive has worked exceptionally well. It is fast to save to, and open from, and so far has had no issues disconnecting from my Mac both when it is awake or when backing up to from sleep.
My only negative about this drive is the relatively loud hum which I imagine is down to the cooling fan. It’s quite noticeable when working, and could even be felt as a light vibration on my desk. However, after a few days I am getting used to the noise. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a loud or heavy vibration, but it’s present enough for me to find it a little distracting when working.
Yes, It is a little more expensive than the other HDDs but with this HDD you know you’re paying for the quality.
I’ve always used Seagate and honestly they are sufficiently good enough. They do what they are supposed to do. But possibly 99% of all Seagate HDDs work perfectly and then there is that 1% that doesn’t or that 1% that Plays up. I have had a couple of Seagate items that have had problems. It is usually the small connector where the usb/hdmi port on the HDD itself buggars up and you can no longer access you main catalogue of games or music. Which lets face it is a major worry/hassle. So from now on I am going to spend a little bit more to have better quality metal work on the port of the HDD. The strength of the metal is much better. Probably thicker and welded better so it doesn’t just mangle up or fall off completely.
YEP, it’s Western Digital for me from now on I think. And they look a lot better don’t they!? I know it’s only aesthetics but I like things to look good as well as work good!! Don’t you?
I like this product, not particularly picky as it was new with valid subscriptions. My favourite thing about it is the colour scheme to match the console models in black or white. This storage solution can be formatted for games and media on any Xbox One console with no special requirements. It comes in various sizes also on a budget and value for money, will be dependent on other Western Digital Game Drives in your basket to compare, as I discovered this one at a later stage on a different product page!
There are complaints about it not being future proof enough for the next consoles in terms of transfer speeds below 5GB/s with USB 3.0. It also uses a proprietary version of the micro USB standard that has a wider connection but is not as common in place of the Type C connection. I chose to buy nevertheless for my collection of games and transferred all my content, as default. It does bother me that for compatibility with newer consoles with the exception of Windows Core OS features it may prove a challenge to appreciate. As the point of backwards compatibility in Xbox One, series X may require a format to continue to function, with older support algorithmic partitions. Hopefully that is not the case with software as a limit in 2020.
I found no major problems with build quality although used to Aluminium it is tough and rests with rubber feet on the white plastic base material.
