This is SUCH a fun game! With a million ways to win, every game is a new experience. I play this with my wife and sons aged 11 and 14 and we all LOVE it. The only odd thing is that it is a max of 5 players.
Now obviously with any game, there is a learning curve but this one is better than most and a quick YouTube video is all you need to get started. The art and game design are great and the gameplay is awesome and my family loves this game.
Other than changing your strategy appropriately, 2, 3, 4, & 5 player games are equally good. My 10yearold loves the spaceship artwork but doesn’t get distracted by it to the point of giving me an easy win. gg!
Like any new game, took a while to learn the rules and strategies. But now that we got the hang of it, it is lots of fun. My son still beats me consistently (darn it!). Unfortunately being bad at a game is not justification to return it. Oh, well.
It’s weird that a dice game that is inherently by chance feels so much like it’s a strategy game. Everyone starts (almost) equal. You buy cards to replace cards on your board. Do you rush to buy up all the victory point cards? Do you set it so you always have money to buy things? Do you want to control the number you roll? All of that is possible. I’ve tried a bunch of different strategies, but even when I lose, I love this game.
I play a LOT of board games, of all different types and genres, but engine builders is one of my favorite types, and I have to say that Space Base is the best one I have played. This game has made it to the table more than any other game in our house, especially after I taught my kids, and they continue to beat me!
The only issue is that there is a bit of table management and tableau management with all the cards moving around, and each player buying and boosting their engines. A modification that my kids like to play is without the use of the Colonies, so that players can not buy their way to the win.
I have played this game maybe 20-30 times and am still not tired of it. Came quickly and it perfect condition. The game also offers several expansions that add the the fun. 5 out of 5 would buy again.
After being introduced to Space Base by my brother and sister-in-law, I couldn’t stop thinking about the game. For the past 3-5 years I wasn’t enjoying board games, and frankly would have rather played video games… until Space Base. I order it on Amazon (got it next day!) and have already played it 7 times. There are so many ways to win and strategize. No two games have been alike, so there is plenty of re-playability. Gotta go, my next space victory is calling.
This is a fun game.
Ranked 191st out of all board games and ranked 30th for family board games on Board Game Geek. I’d give this game a solid 9/10.
Me and my partner regularly get this game to the table. It plays quite quickly 30-40 mins for a two player game. We also play this during our monthly game nights with friends. Larger games take a little longer but are always great fun!
This game is not complex. It’s a simple engine building game.
if you have played Machi Koro you have played Space Base. Similar idea only your in space!!! I like this one a bit better but that may be just because its new and exciting and space themed haha.
Me gusto mucho y es muy divertido jugarlo con la familia. Y lo mejor es que es para 5 jugadores, lo recomiendo ampliamente, requiere que sepas un poco de ingles pero bscio
I really enjoy this game!!! I have played it just with my husband and in a group of four! The directions were a little tricky to grasp but only at first-I watched a YouTube video to learn them and it was super easy from there!!! Very fun and a cool concept! I bet you’ll like it!
This game is fun, easy to learn, and you can play it again and again.
It might be good for 11+ and older because of reading needed and to understand complex strategy.
One thing that I really like is that even on other players’ turns you do things so it’s not boring just waiting to get to you.
You have 12 bases, each of them gives you something when you roll the dice if you have the right cards. Your opponent(s) get things too, from your roll.
You save up point to buy cards for your bases that improve what you can get from your die rolls. You have different paths to victory so it suits different play preferences.
It’s well balanced, funny, and we’ve really enjoyed it. We don’t have expansions, but the base game is good as it is.
Would recommend as a group game but plays well as two players also.
If you don’t mind the randomness of a dice game this genuinely one of the better ones out there! There are a few cards where the rules could be clearer, but other than that, great game!
Fun deck builder dice game if you like Machi koro then you should enjoy this one. Card rules may seem a bit confusing at first but the learning curve is quick. I enjoy that you are still evolved in the game when it is not your turn.
Space Base is a dice rolling game where on every roll, everyone might get stuff. This game is simple to teach and to learn. You have a base with 12 slots for ships, one through twelve, all of which are corresponding to two 6 sided dice. These ships all do a variety of things. End goal is to have the most victory points. One of the ships that you can get allows you to win the game even if you don’t have the most victory points, though you’ll need to activate it. I’ve played Space Base with 3 to 5 players and had a blast (pun intended!) at any of those player counts.
So on a buy, borrow, or bury rating scale, this is a buy. The one detractor is that the ship cards can be very busy with all that is on it which can cause you to put the ship in the wrong slot if you’re not paying attention. The designers should have put the slot number that each ship has on the actual ship or next to the ships instead of the corner. I know that hardcore board gamers might not like dice rolling due to chance though you can manipulate this by the ships you purchase. This game will be a cheap steal that you won’t regret purchasing.
We have been trying a lot of board games lately, and saw this on some of the you tube channels. Great machine building game, like many newer games there is a bit of trust, since everyone is playing their own turn as well at the person who’s turn it is, but it means waiting for your turn to come around again isn’t boring! The game was missing some cubes, but I messaged the seller, and they were sent out – a little slow, but they got here! I think it is a bit easier than Concordia, and more fun than Terraforming Mars – it is in my top 5.
Enjoyable game. Very quick, under 30 mins with set up. Very chancey, but is so light you don’t mind, and you never feel like you have to wait long to do something
This is a very nice dice tableau building card thing, like Machi Koro, but the card combos interact more, and it is more fun. The theme and the artwork is really weak, however, and that detracts from the game. Some of the iconography is confusing and tiny. For example, a 1mm little chain link symbol is important. Some cards have small dots in various places that mean important things. The artwork is repetitive and boring, and the space ships are insipid. Some of the terminology in the rules is confusing, and beginners always have trouble with a few confusing points. However, if you can get past that stuff, the game is really fun for most people. It doesn’t seem to have a dominant strategy, and there are several fun and interesting ways to win. It even has a “YOU WIN” card that is fun. It plays pretty quickly, drives to a conclusion, and it resolves very quickly. Overall, a very good game. If it had a rework on the presentation of the rules, the graphics, and the card iconography, it would be really excellent.
I prefer to use Machi Koro to introduce new players to this style of game, especially girls who like MK’s cutesy artwork, but game play wise, Space Base is an upgrade over Machi Koro in almost every way.
Things I like better:
+ Can use either both die numbers to activate two ‘sectors’ or use their sum to activate one ‘sector.’
(On a 1 and 6 roll, you decide to activate either both the 1 and 6, or the 7.)
+ Most of the cards are different, but some still produce similar results across the board; unlike Machi Koro and Valeria where each number is locked up in terms of what it can or cannot do.
+ The cards also do more things that just pay out resources. You can also swap certain numbers, or make it so that your powerful 12-card can get activated on a 7. Or there are cards that can manipulate the dice number that you rolled. Strategies that implement a simple approach will always be competitive, but it is cool that there are other ways to win or catch up.
+ There is a lot less downtime in the game. This is especially true towards the end of the game, where you claim more rewards on your opponents turns than your own.
I played Valeria as well and here are my opinions:
1. If Space Base is Machi Koro in turbo mode, Valeria is MK in hyper turbo mode.
2. SB starts off slower but at a certain point, peoples’ engines start to hit their stride and then proceed to score points fast. Valeria starts off faster, but at both of their peaks, SB can have some of the sickest and most satisfying payouts.
3. SB uses cubes on a numbered mat while Valeria uses tokens. There are a lot of transactions going on in Valeria bc you are constantly getting paid out and converting tokens into more of another token. Physically getting paid with tokens is usually more fun, but with Valeria, I found the many transactions almost overwhelming.
3. SB’s win condition is a race to 40 points. With Valeria, its ‘who’s got the most points at the end?’ with bonuses awarded depending on who your secret character is.
Overall:
– I prefer Space Base over both MK and Valeria because I love SB’s flexibility in building your tableau.
– For people that are into fantasy themes, they would probably enjoy Valeria more, as it involves slaying monsters and such.
– Despite the consensus that Valeria and Space Base improve on Machi Koro, MK still has one advantage: player interaction. MK has many more cards that impede your opponents progress. Space Base has only one and it is so OP, that I elected to take it out of the game. Valeria has some player interaction, but its nowhere near MK.
