Glad you asked,
“We’ll go way back over a hundred years to 1906, when the word “tarp” became common shorthand for “tarpaulin,” so they really are one and the same.
They were once made of uniformly heavy canvas that had been treated with tar to make it water resistant (hence the ‘tar’ part, whereas tarps of today are just as likely to be made from vinyl or woven polyethylene (with a new name of polytarp). They should have reinforced grommets on the sides and corners to attach rope or pegs. All tarps should be waterproof or water resistant. They come in all sizes and colours. Buy what you need.
Needed a replacement tarp for one that lasted a mere three months before the grommets / eyelets tore (to be fair it was a cheap tarp and the winds were very blustery). This is also inexpensive and should last longer.
*probably, I don’t know.
So far so good.. I have yet to use on a camping trip but on the first inspection it seems to be sturdy, well-made, and suitable for the job in hand. I wouldn’t class it as being lightweight, but then again it looks as though it will withstand some rigorous use
Bigger than expected but a little thin however this does the job and is waterproof.I used a tent peg to secure it and so it should be fine if we have any storms this winter.
Bought for covering paddling pool and as a canopy over the hot tub. Lightweight. But it’s doubled up really well when on the ground and used with the hose as a ‘slippy slide’ for the kids!!
This is a large camping tarp. I’ve actually been using it under our Gazebo to cover the wet ground and it’s been doing it’s job. The tarp protects you from the wet and we’ve spent ages sat on it in the garden with no damage.. There are some peg holes built in to keep it in place, my only issue is it doesn’t come with any pegs. They’re not expensive but it would have been handy, hence the 4 stars.
We’ve not been camping for a long time, but this does really well for more than just that.
It’s a really good, well priced and made camping tarp. We’ve been using it for picnics. It’s really very useful for when you’re having a picnic in a place where you’re seeing a lot of rain.
Recommended.
Because the tarp is relatively thin, it is noisier than thicker options. It crinkles upon packing/unpacking, so ensure everyone is already awake. Once spread, this isn’t an issue. No carry bag is included, so if it gets dirty you’ll need to have another bag at the ready – it’s quite compact though, a bonus for the tarp thinness.
With damp ground, it performed just fine. A good value tarp
This is a really big tarp which seems to be from “proper” strong material. Well finished around the edges. Folds down small enough to be used eg in a car boot, but when unfolded easily big enough for a family picnic etc.
If you want it for camping I’d say it will be perfect. From initial use it is sufficiently waterproof, and not being too heavy makes it easy to handle for such a big tarp.
I was pleasantly surprised by how strong it seems. Time will tell with durability of course but in terms of value for money this ticks the boxes.
Right now I can’t give it 5* as I really want to see how it wears over the spring summer when in regular use.
Robust, well made, a substantial tarpaulin suitable yes, as a piece of camping equipment, or as a cover for a trailer or any other stuff – garden furniture, sandpits etc that need protecting.
I like the green colour and the strong eyelets for securing it with ropes/ guys. I was a girl guid so appreciate such a cleverly designed item for what it will do to keep me dry in my tent, or out and about, picnic-ing. having such a good tarpaulin will be useful for beach barbeques, too. It’s ligh enough to carry around with ease.
An excellent product.
AmazonBasics have produced a cheap tarpaulin here which is a great solution to covering the ground when camping.
Unlike other more expensive types. this doesn’t have any fancy edging or strengthened eyelets for holding in place, but it’s thick enough to protect against a wet ground and feels comfortable enough.
Pretty much does exactly what it sets out to do, then.
