Nice piece, I had to adjust it to fit the hoe. The material looks strong. Careful at the first few times handling it may not feel so confortabile for your hands.
I know its a hoe handle but I didn’t purchase it for that use. I actually was looking for a decent wood approx this length 47″ and about 1.5″ to 2″ thick. It didn’t matter that this is a bit thicker. Anyway I purchased this wood to make a sturdy walking stick/staff, Something substantial as I’m 16 stone, and as it arrived it holds my weight no problem. Obviously I intend to whittle away at it now to get a nice pattern and round the head piece.
But to sum, I’m pretty sure its a great hoe handle, just not what i bought it for.
I bought this with a mattock head and I must say it looks like the business. You have to soak the rod and mattock in a bucket of water for a day or so to allow the shaft to expand, but after that the mattock head is tightly bound to the rod and ready to do work on the allotment. So much easier than a spade, an essential garden tool. The rod itself is well made and feels solid with a satisfying degree of heft.
It fitted perfectly on mine. The original shaft broke. My old one was basically parallel with a black plastic tapered bit that slid on the bottom. This shaft has the wider tapered end all in one with the shaft, if you can get what I mean. Sorry I don’t know what make mine was.
Bought this to replace a broken handle for a Silverline GT52 digger hoe, this is fine it fits perfectly. How strong, and durable it is remains to be seen hence only 4 stars.
excellent. I bought a AZADA hoe (with handle) recently but found that fitting the hoe head to the handle was cumbersome and would need to sand down the handle a lot. I had a spare hoe head that I bought in Africa about 20 years ago, but the handle on that had perished/rotten. I fitted that hoe head to the Azada handle which left me with the Azada hoe head. This handle fits perfectly and seems to be very strong and light weight. I have tried it a little and seems to function just fine.
Strong handle but as with all wood it has its limits. Broke previous one trying to dig out fir tree root. Attached to a hoe and normal to heavy weeding would not stress it. Fit harbour housewares full size azada.
When firmly attached to the matching Am-Tech 3lb Hoe Head this is a superb tool for rapidly clearing weeds. The broad heavy blade cuts cleanly through soil to quickly tidy up an allotment and prepare the ground for planting. It can also be used for digging ditches, earthing up potatoes, grubbing out plants and levelling. However, you can only do this when the handle is firmly attached. Just sliding the head onto the handle and wedging it into place does not work. The head can spin round in use and also slide backwards up the shaft. To fix this problem slide the head onto the handle and drive small hammer wedges down the sides of the attachment ring to lock it in place. Then use a diamond quality drill, (ordinary drill bits will not work on hardened steel), to make a hole clean through the ring and the handle. The hole should be a tight fit for a 6″ flat head round nail. Drive one of these through the hole and cut it off so that 1/4″ protrudes beyond the ring. Place the flat head of the nail on an anvil, vice or solid surface and beat the cut head of the nail with the round end of a hammer to form a dome. In this way you will have used the nail to rivet the hoe head to the handle. For extra strength use steel epoxy in any gaps between the wedges.
